Bessie Smith
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Bessie Goforth Smith, 85, of White Oak Manor of Kings Mountain, formerly of 415 Miles Road, Shelby, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital in Columbus.
A native of Richmond County, she was the daughter of the late William Franklin and Ellen Sykes Beck. She was a homemaker and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and VFW Auxillary.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Gerald B. Goforth and James Lewis Smith. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jerry and Ronald Gantt of Shelby and Linda and Bill Estridge of Bethune, S.C.; four grandchildren, Rhonda Gantt Moore of Shelby, Marc Gantt of Cherryville, Becky Gantt Keesler of Pawley's Island, S.C., and Christa Higgenbotham Threatt of Columbia, S.C.; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Dr. Dolores Queen officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Epworth Building of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and at other times at the home of a daughter, Quail Hollow Drive, Shelby.

SAMEE Moncree
CINCINNATI - Mr. Sammie "Jigs" Moncree, 66, of Cincinnati, formerly of Shelby, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at Hospice in Cincinnati.
He is survived by four sisters, Eloise Hill of Cincinnati, Hester Roberts, Lillian Caster, and Lillie Glover, all of Shelby; and one son, Dwight Moncree of Shelby.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Enloe Mortuary with the Rev. James A. Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Eskridge Grove Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at Enloe Mortuary, Shelby.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Willie Moore, 71, of 108 Pierce Court, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Jessie Tallent
CONNELLY SPRINGS - Mr. Jessie Edward Tallent, 78, of Old N.C. 18, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Grace Hospital.
Born in Cleveland County on Oct. 17, 1922, he was the son of the late Will and Texie Miller Tallent. He was retired from Drexel-Heritage Furnishings in 1984 and was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Aileen Randall Tallent and by a brother, Leonard Tallent.
He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Rhoney and Linda Minton, both of Hickory; a brother, Guy Tallent of Morganton; two sisters, Vangie Leatherman and Pansy Greenhill, both of Connelly Springs; and four grandchildren, Doug Rhoney, David Rhoney, Beth James and Lindsey Minton.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Ray Raymer and Burl Sain officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home.

INMAN, S.C. - Mrs. Glynn Philbeck Henderson, 97, of 114 Cochran Road, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Inman Health Care in Inman.
A native of Ellenboro, she was a daughter of the late William Richard and Biddie Womack Philbeck and the widow of David Spurgeon Henderson. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Ellenboro.
She is survived by two sons, Don Henderson of Inman and David Henderson of Chester, S.C.; one sister, Doris Philbeck of Ellenboro; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, with Drs. Wayne Blackwood and Tim Clark officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday at the church from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. At other times, the family is at the home of Don Henderson, 114 Cochran Road, Inman.

LATTIMORE - Mr. Melvin "Bill" Mauney, 86, of 300 West Lee St., died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Marcus and Mary Gragg Mauney. He retired as a machinist with Ora Mill. He was a member of Lattimore Baptist Church and Friendship Lodge No. 388.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Mauney London.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Ruth Black Mauney; a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Helen Mauney of Lattimore; a daughter, Doris Mauney Lloyd of Shelby; two sisters, Maggie Parker of Shelby and Daisey King of Hendersonville; four grandchildren, Angela London Webb, Michael London, Kathy Lloyd Price and James Steven Lloyd; and three great-grandchildren, Justin Webb, Amber Price and Misty Price.
The funeral is tonight at 7 in the chapel of Lutz-Austell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joe Edwards officiating. Burial will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Rehobeth United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Masonic rites.

Born June 18, 1910, in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late Kelly Edward and Jaine Lail Swink. She was a homemaker and a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Boyd McCurry; a son, Edward McCurry; a daughter, Josephine McCurry; six sisters; and four brothers.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Dorothy McCurry of Lawndale; a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Robert Newton of Casar; five grandchildren, David McCurry, Renee McCurry, Eddie McCurry, Harland Newton and Rita Newton; three great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Harold Cantrell and Burl Sain officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Herb Allred Jr.
CHAPEL HILL - Mr. Herbert "Herb" Allred Jr., 61, of Chapel Hill, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at UNC Hospitals.
A native of Mount Airy, he was the son of Lucy Allred and the late Hiram Allred. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a degree in science education in 1960. He began his 33 year career as an educator in the public schools of North Carolina in Winston-Salem, where he met his wife, Susan Webb Lutz Allred, now pastor of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill. They returned to Chapel Hill in 1965. They served as the resident couple at the Wesley Foundation of UNC-Chapel Hill, and he taught at Phillips Junior High. He received a master's degree in education from UNC and served as principal of Phillips Junior High from 1966 to 1984. He also served as principal of Ephesus Elementary school from 1984 to 1991. After teaching at Chapel Hill High School from 1991 to 1993, he retired. He was awarded the 1989 School Administrator Award for Leadership in Arts Education from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. and was recognized in January at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Banquet for "courageous service rendered in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Civil Rights Movement."
He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill and previously belonged to Saxapahaw United Methodist Church, University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill and Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem.
In addition to his mother and his wife, he is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ben and Jen Allred of Durham and Jason Allred of Solomons, Md.; a sister and her friend, Doris Allred and Katie Winship of Colrain, Mass.; an extended family, Ann Lutz and Charles F. Harry of Shelby and their children, Gennie Lutz and David Carpenter of Shelby and their children and Kathy and John F. Lutz Jr. of Gaffney, S.C., and their children; and many friends.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill. His ashes will be interred at Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

SHELBY - Miss Bonnie Lou Smith, 85, of 724 W. Blanton St., died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Hospice at Wendover.
Born Jan. 12, 1915, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late David Chesley and Claudie Lee Royster Smith. She was a retired warper tender for Dover Mill and a member of Davidson Memorial Baptist Church.
She is survived by a brother, David O. Smith of Orange City, Fla.; two sisters, Illian Smith Moss and Mary Stella Morrow, both of Shelby; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Palmer Mortuary with the Rev. Bobby Ridge officiating.
Burial will be at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
