Rush Cline
LAWNDALE - Mr. Rush Cline, 78, of East Main St., died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, in Cabarrus County.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late David Alexander and Novella Wright Cline. He retired as a supervisor with Cleveland Mills and was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Estelle McCurry Cline; two brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie C. and Connie Cline of Omaha, Neb.; two daughters and a son-in-law, JoAnne Henderson and Vicki and Jim Cook, all of Concord; a brother, Jerome Cline of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral is today at 3 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Cecil Buff officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home in Fallston.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Donald Robert Franklin, 51, of 217 West Ridge St., died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
The funeral is today at 6 p.m. at Greene Funeral Service, Westside Chapel, in Gastonia.
Burial will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain.

Wayne Cook
CASAR - Mr. Wayne Phillip Cook, 59, of 235 Wes Cook Road, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover in Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Broadus Wesley and Mattie Jane Downs Cooke. He was employed at Diceys and Kendall Co. He was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rayford Cook and Leonard Cook; and a sister, Ailene Cook.
He is survived by a brother, Jack Cook of Casar; and three sisters, Ima Cook of Casar, Muriel Isenhour of Hildebran and Edna Bostian of Kannapolis.
A graveside service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ernest Speagle officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston.

Kathleen Gardner
BRENTWOOD, N.Y. - Mrs. Kathleen Gardner, 97, of Brentwood, N.Y., died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000.
She was preceded in death by her son, Willis Gardner.
She is survived by two sons, James Gardner and Marvin Gardner; four daughters, Senie Griggs, Mattie Shaw, Bernice Duncan and Pauline William; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces abd nephews.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Genesis Funeral Home, Shelby.
Burial will be at Washington Baptist Church Cemetery.

SHELBY - Mr. J.C. Byers, 68, of 2044 Green Oak Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Century Care of Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late James and Inez Roberts Byers. He retired from Drexel Furniture Co. after 25 years and worked for Standard Corp. for KoSa. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Susie Mae Daniels Byers; a daughter, Carolyn Jean Byers Dover; a sister, Annie Mae Hardin; and three brothers, John Byers, Billy Gene Byers and Jimmy Joe Byers.
He is survived by a daughter, Janet Byers of Shelby; four sons, Ricky Byers of Shelby, Charles Benjamin Byers of Columbia, S.C., Gregory Byers of Florida and Joseph Holmes of Gaffney, S.C.; a brother, Bruce Byers of Boiling Springs; three sisters, Eula Mitchell and Beulah Mitchell, both of Boiling Springs, and Alma Surratt of Gaffney; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, James Surratt of Gaffney and James Hardin of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Louise Byers; an aunt, Kathleen Roberts; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Enloe Mortuary with the Rev. Wade Wallace officiating. Burial will be at Cleveland Memorial Park.

Charles Stewart
CHARLOTTE - Mr. Charles Elton Stewart, 84, formerly of Shelby, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews.
Born in July 5, 1916, in Cassett, S.C., he was the son of the late Charles Simpson and Martha Ann Pittman Stewart. He moved to Charlotte two years ago after living in Shelby for many years. He was a long-time member of Second Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Blanton Stewart; six brothers, Howard Stewart, Richard Stewart, Roy Stewart, Sidney Stewart, Jesse Stewart and Lewis Stewart; and a sister, Ruth Stewart Parham.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lewis E. and Mary Stewart of Warner Robins, Ga., and J. Keith and Linda Stewart of Charlotte; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda S. and Bob Pittman of Lexington, S.C., and Alona S. and Bill Weddine of Monroe; two brothers, Leslie Stewart of Clover, S.C., and James Stewart of Shelby; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, Wilson Chapel, 5301 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, with the Rev. Reginald Dalton of Second Baptist Church of Shelby officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

CONNELLY SPRINGS - Mr. Alvin Curtis Franklin, 66, of Nobby Lail Road, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at Valdese General Hospital.
A native of Burke County, he was the son of the late Edison and Fannie Lowman Franklin. He was a veteran of the Navy and a retired furniture worker.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Benfield Franklin; two sons, Wayne Franklin of Morganton and Donald Franklin of Icard; two daughters, Janice Blankenship of Sawmills and Barbara Blankenship of Casar; two brothers, Edison Franklin of Connelly Springs and Glenn Franklin of Morganton; two sisters, Margie Ross of Connelly Springs and Flossie Benfield of Morganton; 7 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday at 8 p.m. at Family Funeral Care, Kirksey Chapel in Valdese, with the Revs. Harold Kanupp and Alvin Jones officiating. Burial will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at The Western Carolina State Veteran Cemetery in Black Mountain.

SHELBY - Mr. James Eddie Walls, 48, of 705 Levi St., died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at his home.

CASAR - Mr. Ralph Willis Jr., 53, of 6571 Casar Road, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born March 8, 1947, in Cleveland County, he was a son of Lula Mae Sweezy Willis of Shelby and the late Ralph Eugene Willis Sr. He was a cloth cutter at Bernhardt Furniture and a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Pete Willis and Glenlard Willis.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Bessie Paulette Helms Willis; a son, Ronnie Lee Willis of Casar; a daughter, Lena Gail Willis of Lawndale; six brothers, Randy Willis and Gene Willis of Casar, Boyd Willis and Larry Willis of Lawndale, Bobby Dale Willis of Shelby and Phillip Willis of Vale; and three grandchildren, Trevor Lee Willis, William Tyler Hinson and Payton Lane Hinson.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pisgah Baptist Church, with the Rev. Chris Sanford officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Clarence Ellis
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Clarence Augustus "Bear" Ellis, 45, of 324 Bridges Circle, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born July 23, 1955, in Cleveland County, he was a son of Iola Roberts Ellis of Kings Mountain and the late Lloyd "Shorty" Ellis Jr. He joined the church at an early age. He graduated from Washington High School and had worked for the city of Shelby and Dellinger Chemical Co. of Cherryville.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Rosie Mae Roberts of Kings Mountain; a brother, Dedrick Lloyd Ellis of Irvington, N.J.; two nieces, Sandra G. Falls of Kings Mountain and Debra Rochelle Camp of Cherryville; two grandnieces, Tia Lushelle Peak and Toni Peak of Cherryville; one grandnephew, Samuel Isham Falls of Kings Mountain; aunts, Elizabeth Ellis of Irvington, N.J., Lela Brooks of High Point and Julia Roberts of Kings Mountain; and other relatives.

Era Fortenberry
SHELBY - Mrs. Era Mae Wright Wood Fortenberry, 78, of 401 North Morgan St., died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at White Oak Manor in Shelby.
Born Jan. 29, 1922, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Daisy Bowen Wright and the stepdaughter of the late Minnie Wright. She retired from Buffalo Mill Co. and was a member of Allen Memorial Baptist Church, where she was an active member and had held several church offices.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, James Frank Wood and Forrest Fortenberry; a daughter, Kay Frances Wood; sisters, Geneva Lookadoo and Mamie Biggerstaff; and brothers, Hoyle Davis and Floyd Davis.
She is survived by a brother, James Wood of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Buren and Elizabeth Wood Meade of Shelby and Bobby and Norma Wood Collins of Polkville; a brother, Edwin Davis of Hickory; two sisters, Virginia Herman and Dennie Heafner of Hickory; six grandchildren, Chris Meade, Tracy Burton, David Queen, Warren Smith, Joy Jenkins and Kim Piercy; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Allen Memorial Baptist Church, with the Revs. Andy Meade, Norris Willis and Tim Lawery officiating. The body will be placed in the church a half hour before the service. Burial will be in Buffalo Baptist Church cemetery.
