Judge Hugh Wells
SHELBY - The Honorable Judge Hugh Albert Wells, 78, of 319-4 Lamar Ave., died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Tonce Walker Wells. He was a 1939 graduate of Shelby High School and a 1949 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a 1952 graduate of the UNC-Chapel Hill Law School, LL.B. He was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He began his career in private practice of law in Shelby in 1952 and then had a private practice in Atlanta from 1960 to 1963. He moved back to North Carolina and had a private practice of law in Raleigh from 1963 to 1969. He was commissioner of North Carolina Public Utilities Commission from 1970 to 1974 and sat on the General Counsel of North Carolina Cooperatives from 1974 to 1976. He was Director of Public Staff, North Carolina Utilities Commission, from 1976 to 1977, while also Counsel for the Utilities Review Commission of the General Assembly. He was North Carolina Court of Appeals Judge from 1979 to 1994, appointed on Aug. 20, 1979, by Gov. James B. Hunt, elected to complete an unexpired term in 1980 and elected to full terms in 1982 and 1990. He again chaired the North Carolina Utilities Commission from 1994 to 1996. In addition to being a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the North Carolina Bar, he was a member of the American Legion and was a past "Tarheel Man of the Week" in Raleigh.
Wells twice received The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina's highest civilian honor.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Wells.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Hubner Wells; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Hugh Jr. and Jennifer Wells of Chapel Hill and Joe Wells of Raleigh; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen Wells and Donald Dillport of New York City; five stepchildren and their spouses, Chip and Maria Cloninger, Debi and Chris McDaniel, Beth and John Mayo, all of Shelby, Stephanie and Gary Stadler of Chapel Hill and Chuck Cloninger of Asheville; four sisters, Mary Wray and Helen Toole of Shelby, Lucille and Max Turner of Charlotte, Rachel Hobbs of Williamsburg, Va.; a sister-in-law, Sue Wells of Shelby; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, with Dr. Joe Reeves officiating.
Burial will be private at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall and this afternoon at the home.

John Christopher
MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Mr. John Edward Christopher Sr., 57, of 22 Monroe St., died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at East Haven Nursing Home.
The family will be at the home of Jestine Christopher, 1002 Buffalo St., Shelby.

Ernestine Lockhart
SHELBY - Mrs. Ernestine Pearson Mitchell Lockhart, 52, of 227 Broad Street, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Century Care of Gastonia.
Born July 6, 1948, in Shelby, she was the daughter of the late Amos and Lucy Pearson. She was a homemaker and worked as a CNA at White Oak Manor Nursing Home. She was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Timothy J. Mitchell of Shelby and Marcus T. and Elizabeth Mitchell of the home; a brother, Tommy Pearson of Shelby; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Helen P. and Charlie Williams and Susanne and Charles Smith of Shelby; two special sisters-in-law, Eula Mitchell and Beulah Mitchell of Boiling Springs; a special niece, Whitney Strong of Shelby; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be today at 2:30 p.m. at Good Samaritan Baptist Church, with the Rev. R.E. Devoe officiating.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

FOREST CITY - Ms. Mary Lee Hamilton, 79, of 158 Allen Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Laura Randall Edens, 72, of North Florida Rehab and Care Center in Gainesville, Fla., formerly of Kings Mountain, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ralph Wallace officiating.
Burial will be at Mountain Rest Cemetery.

Julius Causby
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Julius "Nesby" Causby, 83, of Century Care of Cherryville, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Sally Porter Causby and the late Ed Causby. He was retired from Esther Mill and a member of the Army National Guard.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Darkis Verdie Causby, and two sons, Harvey Ray Causby and Ronald Dean Causby.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Judith Causby of Shelby; three brothers, Joe Causby, Sam Causby and Eddie Ray Causby of Shelby; four sisters, Wanda Lewis, Gertrude Petty and Margaret Lee of Shelby and Emma Sue Henderson of Kings Mountain; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Wednesday at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Pheagin officiating.
The family received friends Wednesday at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home.
Merle Dobbins
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Merle Silvers Dobbins, 78, of 280 Young St., died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

RUTHERFORDTON - Mr. Rodney William Camp, 86, of 260 Davenport Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Will and Ora Lowery Camp. He was a farmer and a member of Camp's Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Kendrick Camp.
He is survived by a niece Martha Goforth of Shelby.
Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park with the Rev. Steve Durham officiating.

SHELBY - Mrs. Willie Hill Owens, 82, of 158 Trent McSwain Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at her home.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Van and Minnie Akins Hill. She was a homemaker and a member of Elliott Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the late Rev. Youlon Owens.
She is survived by five sons, Bobby Owens, James Owens and Donald Owens, all of Shelby, the Rev. Jerry Owens of Cherryville and Doug Owens of Newton; three daughters, Dorothy Donahue and Vernie Canipe, both of Shelby, and Patsy McAbee of Rutherfordton; three brothers, James Hill and Alvin Hill, both of Rock Hill, S.C., and Ervin Hill of Shelby; two sisters, Pearl Bridges and Mary Crotts, both of Shelby; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Elliott Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Andy Meade and Billy Boone officiating.
Burial will be in Wallace Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Edith Spradley
SHELBY - Mrs. Edith Poole Spradley, 93, of 516 Woodside Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Mecklen-burg, she was the daughter of the late John Franklin and Essie Orabelle Kerley Poole. She was retired from Cleveland Cloth Mill and was a member of First Baptist Church in Shelby.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Espy Dewitt Spradley; and a son, Scott W. Spradley.
She is survived by two daughters, Farrill Kennerly of Leicester and Sister Mary Jerome Spradley of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Scott W. Spradley Jr., Karan Spradley Bamberg, Shirley Kennerly and Stephen Kennerly; a brother, G. Samuel Poole of Charlotte; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Webb Chapel of First Baptist Church in Shelby with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating.
Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral.

Orlo Bucher
SANTEE, S.C. - Mr. Orlo Peter Bucher, 75, of 33 Andre Michaux Road, P.O. Box 695, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000.
A native of Freeport, Ill., he was the son of the late Stephen Bucher and Alexia Beck Bucher Faist. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal in the 349th Infantry. He was a registered pharmacist for Crawford Drug Store for 35 years and at Emmert Drug Co. prior to his retirement in 1985.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, John Faist; and many aunts and nephews.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Erma Ardell Ross Bucher; a daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie Ann and Randy Wieck of Shelby; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Karen Bucher of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Robert and Sue Bucher of Palmetto, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Erica Linn and Alexis Ann Wieck, both of Shelby.
The funeral Mass will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Freeport.
Burial will be at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Freeport.

Lincoln Gray
HIGH POINT - Mr. Lincoln Isaac "Pop" Gray, 89, of 607 North Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Evergreens Nursing Home.
Born March 8, 1911, in High Point, he was the son of the late Ira Sanky and Daisy Watkins Gray. He retired in 1976 from Hayworth Roll & Panel in High Point as a machinist after 25 years of service. He later worked as a school crossing guard at Fairview Elementary School. He was inducted into the Army in January 1945 and served in Munich, Germany. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of corporal in 1946. He moved to Jamestown in the early 1950s and resided there until 1990 when he moved back to High Point. He was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Flora G. Spears, Genevieve G. Goldsborough, Mildred G. Broadway, Daisy G. Scott and Grace G. Lee; and one brother, Ira S. Gray Jr.
He is survived by his wife, S. Maxine Baldwin Gray of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Lt. Col. Charles L. (U.S. Army retired) and Ernestine Herbin Gray of Temple Hills, Md.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen G. and James W. Atkinson of Shelby, Shirley M. and A.V. Raper and Gladys M. and Glenn R. Chavis, all of High Point; eight grandsons and their wives, Charles L. Jr. and Renee S. Gray of Harrisburg, Pa., Lt. Col. Herbin L. and Joan W. Gray of Hampton, Va., Gary L. Mary Dover
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Mary Emelyn Carpenter Dover, 83, of 29 Bennett Drive, died Wednes-day, Dec. 6, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Walter Haywood and Fannie Lee Richardson Carpenter. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Cherokee Street Baptist Church for 43 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andy Dover; a son, Billy Lee Dover; four sisters, Vivian C. South, Betty C. Mauney, Frances C. Starnes and Margaret C. Whitaker; and four brothers, Jesse Carpenter, Charlie Carpenter, James Carpenter and Carl Carpenter.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue D. and Bob Hayes of Kings Mountain and Faye D. and Clifford Lovelace of Kings Mountain; one brother, Billy Carpenter of Kings Mountain; three granddaughters and their husbands, Deborah Hayes and Michael Conrad of Wilmington and Trina Lovelace and Jerry Shull and Janet S. Lovelace, all of Kings Mountain; three great-grandchildren, Andrea Brown, Todd Jackson and Tonya Jackson.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cherokee Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Herman Green officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain.
