Elmer Martin
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Elmer C. Martin Sr., 71, of 701 Southwood Drive, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000 at his home.
A native of Gaston County, he was a son of the late Otis and Sally Gantt Martin.
He was a member and former deacon of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church and a charter member of the Kings Mountain Rescue Squad. He retired from Lithium Corp., Bessemer City.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Kinley Martin; six brothers, Eb Martin, Jay Martin, William Martin, Troy Martin, O.D. Martin and Pete Martin; and a sister, Mae Black.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Elmer "Tim" Jr. and Bobbie Martin of Kings Mountain; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Joyce and Jim Posey, Mary Shannon and Chuck Bennick and Charlotte Anthony, all of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Gene Martin of Hickory and Jesse Willard "Wid" Martin of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a sister, Ivey Smith of Kings Mountain; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mitchell Pruitt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home.

Evie Van Dyke
BREVARD - Mrs. Evie Van Dyke, 72, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, in Shelby.
A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Dalphus and Mary Green West.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two sons, Luther Van Dyke and Boyd Van Dyke; a brother, Donald West; and a sister, Mozell Holden.
She is survived by a daughter, Gay McCoy of Cherryville; two brothers, Jim West and Norman West of Brevard; two sisters, Ellen Owen of Brevard and Lorena Banks of Mt. Holly; a grandson, Michael McCoy of Shelby; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Moody-Connolly Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leo Bracken officiating. Burial will be in Carson's Creek Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
Buddy Guffey
SHELBY - Mr. Buddy Guffey, 59, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at his home.
Born in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Arvell and Macie Ensley Guffey. He was owner of Guffey's Beauty Salon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Poteat and Dorothy Smith, and two brothers, Roy Guffey and Garland Guffey.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy Philbeck Guffey; a son, Ensley Guffey of the home; a daughter, Laney Rogers of the home; a brother, Baxter Guffey of Lake City, Fla.; and three sisters, Deckie Delk of Shelby, Eunice Ramsey of Sunshine and Valerie Harrill of Forest City.
A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Lutz-Austell Funeral Home.
The family received friends at the funeral home Tuesday.

MORGANTON - Mrs. Valerie B. Carico, 71, of Highway 18, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Mission St. Joseph Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Esper and Nancy Smith Bumgardner.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a retired health care technician with Western Carolina Center.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam Junior Carico; three brothers and one sister.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, James and Deborah Carico and Gary M. Carico of Morganton; three brothers, the Rev. Eugene Bumgardner, G.C. Bumgardner, and J.U. Bumgardner of Polkville; three sisters, Louise Michaels of Morganton, Addiebell Wray of Kings Mountain and Beatrice Michaels of Casar; a grandson and his fiancée, Mike Carico and Vicki Clark of Morganton; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Scott and Bonnie Carico of Morganton; and a fiancé, Bustar Duncan of Hickory.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Golden Valley Missionary Methodist Church, with the Revs. Earl Michaels and Howard Michaels officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

SPINDALE -Mr. Howard Amos Toney, 72, of 130 Missouri St., died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, W. Va.

Eddie Haynes
SHELBY - Mr. Eddie B. Haynes, 69, of 333 Bridges Circle, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Clark County, Ga., he was the son of the late Anthony and Hattie Rogan Haynes. He retired from Carolina Freight, Cherryville, where he was a dock worker with 40 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Hattie H. Haynes of the home; three daughters, Shelia Haynes Dawkins and her husband, Stanley, of Shelby, Sharon Denise Haynes of Charlotte and Renee Louise Haynes of Atlanta; a sister, Annie Mae Catlin of Lawndale; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Lawndale First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Billy Houze officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends for 30 minutes before the service at the church.

Albert Hamrick
BOILING SPRINGS - Mr. Oscar Albert Hamrick, 87, of Crawley Memorial Nursing Center, formerly of 2435 Honey Haven Farm Road, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Oscar and Ocie Mintz Hamrick. He was a farmer and self-employed contractor with Dover Textile Company. He piloted his own airplane and was a champion checker player.
He was a past deacon, trustee and lifelong member of Flint Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Mintz Hamrick, Gibb Hamrick and Camp Hamrick; a sister, Elaine Covington; a daughter-in-law, Patt Hamrick; and a son-in-law, Daniel Dalmas.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Corene Blanton Hamrick; a son, Marvin Bruce Hamrick of Shelby; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Alberta and Pete Petersen of Atlanta, Rosella and Mike Goodman of Charlotte, Eugenia and Al Huntsinger of Shelby, Juanita and Jerry Bandy of Lincolnton, and Vivian Dalmas of Raleigh; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Flint Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Keith Dixon and Ed Sessoms officiating. Burial will follow in the Hamrick Family Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.

DETROIT - Mrs. Conolia Stroud Shivers, 82, of 1589 Dexter St., died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Grace Hospital in Detroit.
Born in Green County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Iverson and Lena Elder Stroud. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Shivers.
She is survived by a stepson, Willie Wray of Shelby; five sisters, Annie Benton and Hazel Thomas and her husband, June, of Lawndale, Ada Bell and her husband, Joey, of Ellenboro, Alberta Robinson and her husband, George, of Forest City, Lena Pounds and her husband, William, of Shelby; and three brothers, Charlie Stroud, Herbert Stroud and Thomas Stroud of Shelby.
The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Palmer Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends for 30 minutes before the service at the church.

SHELBY - Mr. Rollin Delbert Cook, 80, of 1442 Fletcher Road died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Ambrose and Deller Tinsley Cook. He was retired from the card room at Cleveland Mills. He was a veteran of the Army and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Belle Causby Cook; a daughter, Patsy Cook Beheler; a grandson, Michael Beheler; and three brothers.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Elaine C. and Larry Causby of Shelby; a brother, Everett Cook of Casar; three sisters, Mamie Self and Gertie Walker, both of Casar, and Ethel Newton of Charlotte; a granddaughter and her husband, Brenda C. and Brian Jackson of Waco; two grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, Gary and Carla Causby of Shelby and Chad Beheler of Nashville, Tenn.; and four great-grandchildren, Christopher Jackson, Crystal Jackson, Brittany Causby and Jordan Causby.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home with the Revs. Terrill Crump and Chris Sanford officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Kingston, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Abner Welling and Elizabeth Prime Herget. She was retired from Suttle's Drug Co.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Burley Herget, Edward Herget and Murray Herget; and two sisters, Ila Cole and Gertie Baker.
She is survived by her husband, Sam B. Eskridge; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Vance and Lela Allen of Grover; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Sami and Ralph Tietjen of Philadelphia; a stepgrandchild, Stephanie Bridges of Alaska; and several nieces and nephews of Canada.

SHELBY - Mr. Finley "Bill" Cecil Hargett III, 52, of 2039 New Prospect Church Road, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at home.
A native of Wayne County, Ind., he was the son of Finley Cecil II and Louise Rosetta Hart Hargett of Columbus, Ohio. He was a shipping clerk at Fasco. He was a veteran of the Navy, serving in Vietnam.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Brenda Kay Blevins Hargett; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert Lee and Deanna Hargett and Brent Eric Hargett, all of Shelby; a daughter, Tracy Diana Darnell of Fallston; a brother, Keith Eric Hargett of Eaton, Ohio; two sisters, Anita Silvey and Alice Selby, both of Columbus; and five grandchildren, Jonathan, Ashley, Matthew, Cassie and Cody.
