J.D. Patterson
SHELBY - Mr. J.D. Patterson, 81, of 1207-A Northgate Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
Born in McDowell County, he was the son of the late J.C. and Sarah Parker Patterson. He retired as a machine installer with American Schlafhorst Inc. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of New Bethel Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles Patterson.
He is survived by his wife, Syble Sisk Patterson of the home; a son, Ronald D. Patterson of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bobbi and Don Gibson of Nashville, Tenn., and Tammi and Lynn Dodson of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Dana Patterson of Lexington, Ky., and Ryan Dodson and Wesley Dodson, both of Wilmington; and a special friend Chivous Melton of Ellenboro.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at New Bethel Church of the Nazarene with the Revs. Bob Andress and Reed Jones and Dr. Don McSwain officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery.
The family received friends Thursday from 6 to 7:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Shirley Stinchcomb, 700 West Warren St., Shelby.

Albert Hamrick
BOILING SPRINGS - Mr. Oscar Albert Hamrick, 87, of Crawley Memorial Nursing Center, formerly of 2435 Honey Haven Farm Road, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Oscar and Ocie Mintz Hamrick. He was a farmer and self-employed contractor with Dover Textile Company. He piloted his own airplane and was a champion checker player. He was a past deacon, trustee and lifelong member of Flint Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Mintz Hamrick, Gibb Hamrick and Camp Hamrick; three sisters, Elaine Covington, Madge Russ and Laladge Bridges; a daughter-in-law, Patt Hamrick; and a son-in-law, Daniel Dalmas.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Corene Blanton Hamrick; a son, Marvin Bruce Hamrick of Shelby; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Alberta and Pete Petersen of Atlanta, Rosella and Mike Goodman of Charlotte, Eugenia and Al Huntsinger of Shelby, Juanita and Jerry Bandy of Lincolnton, and Vivian Dalmas of Raleigh; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was Thursday at Flint Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Keith Dixon and Ed Sessoms officiating. Burial followed at the Hamrick Family Cemetery.

Colene Gettys
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Colene Parker Gettys, 58, of 114 Wells St., died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia.
Born in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Millard Hull Parker of Casar and the late Millard Parker. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a son, Laray Goodman; a brother, Randy Parker; and a sister, Hettie Herman.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Raymond Gettys of Kings Mountain; a son, Ricky Keith Goodman of Kings Mountain; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Tony Ruppe, both of Kings Mountain; three brothers, Dennis Parker of Shelby and Junior Parker and Homer Parker of Casar; four sisters, Rachel Buchanan of Hickory, and Louise McFarland, Bernice Mosteller and Judy Buff, all of Casar; three grandchildren, Kevin Greene and his wife, Sherri, and Heather and Dusty Ruppe, all of Kings Mountain.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mountain Rest Cemetery.

Viki McKinney
LAWNDALE - Mrs. Viki B. McKinney, 41, of 108 Wallace St., died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Hospice at Wendover.
Born in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of the late George and June Heintz Bierlair. She was a social worker with Gaston County Department of Social Services and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
She is survived by her husband, Milton McKinney; two sons, Paul McKinney and Matthew McKinney of Lawndale; a brother, George Bierlair Jr. of Dallas; and two sisters, Cheri Roseman of Peachland and Coneia Philbeck of Gastonia.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Shelby. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

John Rhodes
NEBO - Mr. John Thomas Rhodes, 86, of McDowell Nursing Center, formerly of the Oakdale Community in Charlotte, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at McDowell Hospital in Marion.
Born Jan. 25, 1914, in Madison County, Ga., he was the son of the late Colonel Leonard and Ola Black Rhodes.
He was a retired dock foreman for the A.G. Boone Co. with 40 years of service. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Nesbitt Rhodes and a son, Grady Marshall Rhodes.
He is survived by a son, Danny T. Rhodes and his fiancée, Jackie Crawley, of Shelby; five grandchildren, Donna Rahn, Danny Rhodes Jr., Scott Rhodes, John Rhodes and Frankie Ford; two sisters, Louise R. Pruitt of Utah and Mable R. Mullis of Weddington; and a special friend, Edna Richmond of Princeton, W.Va.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Charlotte with the Rev. Owen Peeler officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

Ronald Stacey
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Ronald L. Stacey, 32, of 628-1 Bell Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000.
Born in Yuma, Ariz., he was a son of Jerry D. and Marie Davis Stacey of Kings Mountain. He was a former employee of the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office and was an Army veteran. He served in Operation Just Cause in Panama, where he earned the Purple Heart, and served in Operation Desert Storm. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was also a Mason and member of the Creasy Proctor Lodge No. 679 in Fayetteville.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Barnett.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Diane Clippard Stacey; a grandfather, J.B. Stacey; and two sons, Austin Stacey and Dakota Stacey, all of Kings Mountain; a daughter, Priscilla Stacey of Sanford; five brothers, Carl Barnett, Dallas Stacey, Doug Stacey and Mark Stacey of Kings Mountain and Tony Barnett of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Lisa Jestes of Kings Mountain; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Caulder officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, with military honors.

ELLENBORO - Samantha Renee Kennedy, infant daughter of Alan and Angela Bailey Kennedy of 1764 Oak Grove Church Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000 at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Morning Star Independent Baptist Church with the Rev. Jake Bailey officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mary Sweezy
SHELBY - Mrs. Mary Anne Putnam Sweezy, 70, of 2133 Sweezy Road, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Wilburn H. and Orla Mae Hawkins Putnam. She was retired as a food service worker at Township 3 Elementary School. She was a member of Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church and the Barringer Sunday school class, who will serve as honorary pallbearers.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Ward Sweezy; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jill and James Clary of Boiling Springs and Terry and Danny McSwain of Shelby; and two grandchildren, Richard McSwain and Ashley McSwain, both of Shelby.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church with the Revs. Billy Towery and David Duncan officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

SHELBY - Mr. Joseph (Joe) Israel Rubenstein, 92, of 1230 Westwood Drive, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Baltimore, he was the son of the late Hyman and Molly Friedman Rubenstein. He was retired from newspaper sales and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Mae Campbell Rubenstein.
He is survived by two sisters, Lillian Realberg and Dorothy Deana Powers, both of Baltimore.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church with Dr. Harold Fite officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.

A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Esper and Samantha Penson White. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church and was retired from Burlington Industries.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Edgar "Bud" Holmes.
She is survived by two sons, Wendell Holmes and Mike Holmes, both of Forest City; a brother, Baxter White of Forest City; two grandchildren, Dell Holmes and Angie Keller; four step grandchildren, Darla DeWitt, Ginger Swan, Patricia Weaver and Jerry Hickey; one great-grandchild, Braxton Keller; and two step great-grandchildren Brian Atkins Jr. and Brennen Atkins.

EAST ORANGE, N.J. - Mr. Archie Byers, of East Orange, N.J., died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000.
He is survived by his three daughters, Phyllis Byers, Peggy Friday and Joyce Hewett; a step-son, Winston Macon; two sisters, Marjorie Walker and Mae Norma Shuford and a brother, Theodore Byers Sr.; three granddaughters, Michelle Byers, Elissa Friday-Moore and Deidre Friday-Kennedy; two grandsons, Kevin Friday and Carl Douglass Byers; a brother-in-law, Paul Shuford; and other relatives.

A native of Rutherfordton County, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Ruth Harrill Edney. He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church and was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was retired from Crellin Plastics.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Hamrick Edney of the home; two sons, Bobby Edney of Forest City and Ricky Edney of Bostic; one brother, Alfred Edney of Rutherfordton; one sister, Mary Ann of Mooresboro; and three grandchildren.
