Fannie Patterson
SHELBY - Mrs. Fannie Mae Lipscombe Patterson, 72, of 907 Walnut St., died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Robert and Minnie Dawkins Lipscombe. She retired from Carter Service Industries where she worked as a machinist for 30 years. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Caldwell Patterson; and one brother, Booker T. Lipscombe.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Rena P. and Charles Horton of Shelby; one brother and sister-in-law, Laurence and Margaret Lipscombe of Washington, D.C.; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. James Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday 30 minutes before the service at the church.

Howard Grier
SHELBY - Rev. Howard H. Grier, 77, of 1202 Masonic Drive, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Pineville, he was the son of the late Jessie M. Scurry. He was last employed by Saint John AME Zion Church in Rocky Mount where he was a minister for 4 years.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one son, Howard H. Grier Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Frances H. Grier of the home; four sons, Charles Grier and Harold Grier, both of Charlotte, and James E. Parker and Rufus D. Parker, both of Shelby; and five daughters, Vernelle Dye and Jessica Benita Barnwell, both of Charlotte, Ossie P. Oates and Vera Parker, both of Shelby and Elizabeth P. Reid of Camden, Del.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Good Samaritan Fellowship Church with the Rev. R.E. Devoe officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends Wednesday 30 minutes before the service at the church.

Rosell Meeks
SHELBY - Mrs. Rosell Lyvon Moses Meeks, 67, of 421 Milsap Road, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a graduate of Camp High School and a member of New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church. She was a retired seamstress with Universal Manufacturing Co., where she had worked for 22 years.
She is survived by her husband, Emanuel Meeks Sr. of the home; a son, Emanuel Meeks Jr. of Kingstown; a daughter, Mrs. Franciscan Gainey of Greensboro; a brother, Carey Moses of Mount Clemens, Mich.; three sisters, Bobbie Hayes and Lurlean Moses, both of Grover, and Mrs. Geraldine Cooke of New Rochelle, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Lyvon Meeks of Kingstown; and three grandsons, Maurice Meeks and Marcus Meeks, both of Kingstown, and Rasheed Gainey of Greensboro.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. A.A. Ponder officiating. Burial will follow at Saint Peter's Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church.

Thompson Gammons
GREENSBORO - Thompson Morris Gammons, infant son of Keith and Jayne Gammons of Greensboro, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at North Carolina's Children Hospital in Chapel Hill.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Michael and Linda Gammons and Wilford and Opal Morris of Shelby; his great-grandparents, Laura Gammons of Shelby and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pyron of Montgomery, Ala.; and aunts and uncles, Jeff and Chris Gammons of Rock Hill, S.C., Julia and Jarrod Scott of Raleigh, Grace Marie Morris of Charlotte and Annette Morris of Shelby.
The funeral was Monday morning at First Baptist Church of Greensboro, with Dr. Ken Massey, the Rev. Charles Qualls and Mrs. Sandra Canipe officiating.
Burial was Monday at Cleveland Memorial Park in Shelby.
The family received friends Sunday night at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Service.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Ms. Ruth Wells Horn, 50, of 609 Bell Road, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of Marshall and Ethel Whetstine Wells of Kings Mountain. She was a member of Family Worship Center, Church of God in Kings Mountain. She was employed by Ruppe Hosiery.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Julie Horn and Eric Hicks of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Steve Wells and Don Wells, both of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Vickie Wells of Kings Mountain and Elaine Walters of Shelby; and one grandchild, Erica Horn.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Family Worship Center with the Rev. Roger Woodard officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Rest Cemetery.

SHELBY - Mrs. Lottie Brooks Phillips, 79, of 1306 Markway St., died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Jackson County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late L.J. and Nora Mae Phillips Brooks. She was retired from Cleveland Cloth Mill where she had worked for 38 years. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Odis E. Phillips; three brothers, Paul Brooks, Curtis Brooks and Lonnie Brooks Jr.; and one sister, Blondine Poston.
She is survived by one son, Ed Phillips of Shelby; and one sister, Mary Barnett of Shelby.
A graveside service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park with the Rev. Harold Fite officiating.

SHELBY - Mr. Roy James Bailes, 77, of 313 Lily St., died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Autumn Care of Forest City.
A native of York County, S.C., he was the son of the late William Thomas and Mary Frances Neeley Bailes. He was retired from Ora Mill Co. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was a member of the D.A.V. He was a Navy veteran who served in World War II in the Pacific Theatre.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Lois Carter Bailes; one grandson, Darren Glenn Carter; two brothers, Sam Bailes and Carl Bailes; and one sister, Rebecca Hamrick.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Geneva Carter of Greenville, S.C.; four brothers, Jesse Bailes, Jack Bailes and Ben Bailes, all of Shelby, and Charles Bailes of Hickory; eight sisters, Grace Hyder, Lucille Robinson, Betty Raines, Della Price and Doris Jones, all of Shelby, Annie Mae Orr of Charleston, S.C., Martha Laneer of Anderson. S.C., and Katherine Sailors of Patterson Springs; three granddaughters, Tracy Lynn Finley, Chandra Joanne Pressley and Joy Michelle Bruckman; and four great-grandsons, Jeffrey Pressley, Joey Pressley, Blake Bruckman and Bradley Bruckman.

PATTERSON SPRINGS - Miss Heather Dawn Waters, 17, of 5005 Bowen Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, on College Avenue in Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of James Edward and Jane Tatham Waters. She was a senior at Crest High School, where she was a member of Future Teachers of America, Choral Ensemble, Beta Club, Spanish Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society. She was a member of Putnam Memorial Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by two grandfathers, Clyde Lee Waters and Roland Tatham.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Kevin and Angel Waters of Shelby; and two grandmothers, Dorothy Waters of Murphy and Alberta Tatham of Andrews.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Putnam Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Bryan Glisson and Larry Morris officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.

Ruby Stella Irvin
SHELBY - Miss Ruby S. Irvin, 94, of Sterling House, 1425 E. Marion St., died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Guilford Pinkney and Elizabeth Simmons Irvin. She graduated from Boiling Springs High School. She received her teacher's certificate from Appalachian State Teachers College. She received her librarian degree from Western Carolina University. She retired from Shelby Junior High as the librarian. She had worked for 50 years in the city and county schools. After retiring she worked for 10 years at Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly in Ridgecrest. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church where she was the first deaconess, a Sunday school teacher, a member of Zoe Lutz Circle, a member of the Mary Gold Sunday School class, a member of the Golden Years Club, a member of the choir, a member of the Historical Committee and a current member of the building committee. She was the church librarian for many years. She was the oldest member of Zion Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Madge Irvin Austell, Ruth Irvin Moore and Mary Irvin Lackey; and four brothers, James T. Irvin, Eubert L. Irvin, Hugh L. Irvin and A.V. Irvin.
She is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Jessie and Robert Forney of Shelby; two sisters-in-law, Thelma P. Irvin of Bennettsville, S.C. and Alise R. Irvin of Elizabeth City; 13 nieces and nephews; and 25 great-nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Randy Bridges and the Rev. Russell Fitts officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Paul Meacham
SHELBY - Mr. Paul Franklin Meacham, 78, of 106 Holly Hill Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Joseph Mellon and Arie Lee Anthony Meacham. He was retired from Carter Chevrolet, where he worked in body repair. He was an instructor at Cleveland Community College. He was a member of Zoar Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, a member of the Friendly Sunday School class, a former Sunday school teacher and a member of the Zoar Baptist Church Seniors. He was a sergeant in the Air Force and was stationed in Okinawa.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Wattie Meacham and Glenn Joe Meacham; and two sisters, Elsie Meacham Ledbetter and Lavon Meacham Edwards.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Hollifield Meacham; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Debbie Meacham of Valrico, Fla.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Deitra and John Chapman of Lincolnton and Paulette and Mickey Bradley of Shelby; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Bernice and J.C. Rabb, Myrtle Meacham and Connie Trammell, all of Shelby; one brother-in-law, Harlan Edwards of Shelby; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3:30 at Zoar Baptist Church with Dr. Marvin Gobble and the Revs. Ernest Richards and Kenneth Hollifield officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.

POLKTON - Mrs. Ruth Hoyle Winfield, 75, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at Union Regional Medical Center in Monroe.
A native of Cleveland County, she was born on July 30, 1924, the daughter of the late John Martin and Laura Leigh Fortenbury Hoyle. She retired as a legal secretary. She had worked with Pat Taylor and F. O'Neil Jones, attorneys in Wadesboro. She was a member of Brown Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Winfield of the home; her daughters, Lu Ann Prud'homme of Tega Cay, S.C., and Mrs. David T. (Nancy) Bricker of Polkton; her grandchildren, Cherilyn Crawford, Ali Prud'homme, both of Tega Cay, and Josh Bricker of Polkton; and her sisters, Mrs. Cliff (Helen) Martin of Polkton and Mrs. Aileen Gardner of Shelby.
