Mary Elmore
LAWNDALE - Ms. Mary Frances Elmore, 56, of 115 Falls Road, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of Essie Petty Elmore and the late Harvey Bus Elmore Sr. She was a member of Community Baptist Church, The Order of the Eastern Star and the Heroines of Jericho. She retired from Shadow Line after 12 years of service.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her son, Johnnie Lee Elmore and her grandmother, Bessie Dillingham.
In addition to her mother of the home, she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Frances Elmore of Polkville and Tyrone and Dena Elmore of Cherryville; three brothers, Ambros Archie of Goldsboro, Loy Elmore of Gastonia and Harvey Elmore of Cherryville; five sisters, Helen Mitchell of Boston, Betty Clark, Dorothy Elmore, and Victoria Sarratt, all of Lawndale, Bertha Hunt of Forest City; seven grandchildren, Brandy Coleman of Virginia, Kenyata Odoms and Demetrius Odoms, both of Polkville, Jasmine Hamrick, Tyra Hamrick, Kacey Elmore and Kelcey Elmore, all of Cherryville; and two great-grandchildren, Kaniya Odoms and DaKarai Saunders.
The funeral will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Lawndale with the Rev. Thurston Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at Philadelphia Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the funeral at the church.

SHELBY - Mrs. Kathleen Mode Ledbetter, 89, of 1011 Hidden Valley Road, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Houston Bagwell
SHELBY - Mr. Houston Lloyd Bagwell, 81, of 1233 W. Cabaniss Road, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
A native of Claude, Texas, he was a son of the late Claude and Edna Garrison Bagwell. He retired as an airline mechanic with National Airlines after 30 years of service. He served in the Air Force 447 Bomb Group during World War II in the European Theater. He was a member of Double Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Martha A. Blanton Bagwell of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Lloyd and Phyllis Bagwell of Granite Falls, Wash.; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce Lynn and Johnny Shanblin of Atlanta; two grandsons, Joshua Broadwater and Thomas Broadwater of Atlanta; a granddaughter, Carrie Lynn Broadwater of Atlanta; one great-grandchild; six brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Cleveland Funeral Services, with the Rev. Eddie Brackett officiating.
Burial will be at Double Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

Miles Gettys
DARLINGTON, S.C. - Mr. Miles D. Gettys, 75, of Darlington, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at his home.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Yates and Martha McSwain Gettys. He was a graduate of Polkville High School and the National Business College in Shelby. He served in the Navy during World War II on the USS Pittsburgh. He was employed in the oil mill business for more than 50 years with Southern Cotton Oil Company in Shelby, Huntsville, Ala., Laurens, S.C., and Columbia, S.C. He retired Dec. 31, 1998, after 30 years as manager of the Hartsville Oil Mill, Darlington Plant. He was an active member and deacon of First Baptist Church, a member and past president of the Darlington Lions Club, a member of American Legion Post #13, and a member of the board of directors of Pilot Club and its Lifeline Foundation.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Oleene Hamrick Gettys of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Darryl and Mary Gettys of Darlington and Terry and Patricia Gettys of Simpsonville, S.C.; five grandchildren, Kristin Gettys and Kyle Gettys of Darlington and Keith Gettys, Andrew Gettys and Mark Gettys of Simpsonville; his mother-in-law, Ocie Jones Hamrick of Darlington; a special friend, David Vaughan of Darlington; a sister, Marietta "Jerry" Floyd of Shelby; three brothers, Marion Gettys, Minor Gettys and Maynard Gettys of Shelby; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Darlington.
Burial will be at Grove Hill Cemetery.

Sarah Tinkler
COLUMBUS, N.C. - Mrs. Sarah Knox Tinkler, 92, of Columbus, formerly of Cliffside, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Pardee Care Center in Hendersonville.
A native of Spartanburg County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Eva Tinsley Knox. She was a former teacher and a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Tinkler.
She is survived by a son, James E. Tinkler of Hendersonville; a daughter, Jane Lamm of Houston; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at noon in the chapel of McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, with the Rev. Keith Franklin officiating.
Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery in Clinton, S.C.
The family will receive friends Wednesday one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Charles Nicholson
CASAR - Mr. Charles R. Nicholson, 93, of 129-1 Judy Road, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born March 18, 1907, in Glouscester City, N.J., he was the son of the late Randall Nicholson and Hermia Morgan Kiker. He was a retired construction supervisor and a published poet. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church for 21 years and a member of Famous Poet's Society of Anaheim, Calif. He won several awards of recognition including Famous Poet for 1996, Outstanding Achievement in 1988 and 1999 and High Standard of Excellence in 1999.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a half brother, Armand "Bud" Kiker, and a sister, Anna N. Locke.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gladys Pearl Slim Nicholson of Casar; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Wayne Little of Casar and Mindy and Clarence Venable of Long Beach, Calif.; two granddaughters, Lois Little and Bonnie Little; and a great-grandchild, Jessica Trevathan.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church, with the Rev. Norris Willis officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

Bruce Fortenberry
MOORESBORO - Mr. Bruce Edward Fortenberry, 38, of 3469 Curtis Road, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of Kenneth Edward and Hilda Pruett Fortenberry of Shelby. He was lead tech at Metals America & G.T. McSwains. He was a member of Goode Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was survived by his wife, Alicia Kitts Fortenberry of the home; a stepdaughter, Mallori Sneed of the home; a daughter, Emily Fortenberry of the home; a son, Jacob Fortenberry of the home; a brother, Brian N. Fortenberry of Grover; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Fortenberry of Grover; a grandmother, Estelle Pruett of Shelby; a father-in-law and mother-in-law, Marshall and Inus Faye Kitts of Mooresboro; and a brother-in-law, Mike Kitts of Spartanburg, S.C.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Cleveland Funeral Services, with the Revs. Lawrence Toney and Robbie Hensley officiating.
Burial will be at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the home.
Pearl Chapman
NEWTON - Mrs. Pearl Geneva Hull Chapman, 88, of 3562 Plateau Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.
Born Feb. 2, 1912, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Gerture Turner Hull. She was retired from Impact Furniture and was a member of Jacob's Fork Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Belo Chapman; three sons; two brothers and a sister.
She is survived by eight sons, Evoid Chapman of Garnersville, Ira Chapman of Lincolnton, Claude Chapman of Cherryville, and Carol Chapman, Grady Chapman, Charles Chapman, Donald Chapman and Junior Chapman, all of Newton; seven daughters, Selma Moore of Lawndale, Marlene Newhouse of Hickory, Madalene Dellinger of Clarksville, Tenn., Vangie Grigg and Ruth Whisnant, both of Newton, Daisy Bolick of Lawndale and Patsy Perry of Carbon Hill, Ala.; 47 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, with the Revs. John Geouge and Richard Johnson officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston.

SHELBY - Mr. Edgar "Gar" Cansler Price IV, 15, of 111 Tonga Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Edgar "Eddy" Cansler Price III of Shelby and Amanda "Mandie" Crawley Price of Boiling Springs. He was a tenth-grade student at Crest High School and a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Andrew "Drew" Crawley Price and Patrick Allen Price of the home; his maternal grandparents, Henry and Patsy Crawley of Boiling Springs, and his paternal grandparents, Ed and Betty Price of Shelby.
The funeral is today at 2 p.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church, with the Rev. Terry Jordan officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Emmett Matthews
SHELBY - Mr. Charles Emmett Matthews Jr., 77, of 908 Surrey Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Roanoke Rapids, he was the son of the late Charles Emmett and Annie Patterson Matthews. He retired from the personnel department of Fiber Industries and Container Corp. He began his career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, serving in Washington, D.C., and Charlotte. He was a former president of the Shelby Jaycees and Shelby Kiwanis. He was a tobacconist. A graduate of Riverside Military Academy and Greenbriar Military School, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a Navy pilot during World War II. He was a former board member of Cleveland County Mental Health and Cleveland Memorial Hospital, and he was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Morehead Matthews; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles E. III and Anna Matthews of Wilkesboro; a stepson and his wife, Bobby and Brenda Henkel of Tuckasegee; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Anne and Howard Bradburn of Shelby and Kelli and E.J. Lyons of Charlotte; one stepdaughter and her husband, Denise and Billy Shepherd of Lake Junaluska; six grandchildren, Jamie Matthews, Patrick Matthews, Blair Matthews, Clark Matthews, Michael Bradburn and Emma Jane Lyons; six stepgrandchildren, Jesse Henkel, Jodi Henkel, Justus Henkel, Kenlyn Shepherd, Jack Shepherd and Walton Shepherd; and two great-grandchildren.

John Fraley Sr.
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. John L. "Buck" Fraley Sr., 80, of 404 Farris Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at his home.
Born May 4, 1920, in Gaston County, he was a son of the late Howard H. Fraley and the late Willie Mae Rhyne Fraley Isenhour, and the stepson of the late Rev. Walter E. Isenhour. He was chairman emeritus of Carolina Freight Corp. and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cherryville, where he served as chairman of the Administrative Board.
He graduated from Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy in 1941 and attended N.C. State University. In 1943, he graduated from Army Officers Candidate School at Grinnell College, Iowa. An Army captain during World War II, he served with the Combat Engineers.
Gardner-Webb University conferred on him an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree in 1972, and in 1983, he received an honorary Doctorate in Public Service from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
From 1946 to 1949, he owned and managed Bucknit Mills in Cherryville and Maiden Knitting Mills in Maiden. His 43-year career with Carolina Freight Carriers Corp. began in 1949. He started as a sales executive and advanced to executive vice president, vice chairman and chief executive officer and chairman of the board.
In his public life, he served on the boards of Duke Power Co., First Union Corp. and First Union National Bank, was vice chairman of the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees, a director of UNC Charlotte Foundation, and founding chairman of the UNC Charlotte Board of Visitors. He served on the boards of trustees for Pfeiffer University and Fork Union Military Academy and as chairman of the Board of Advisors for Gardner-Webb University.
He was vice chairman of Daniel J. Stowe Botanical Gardens in Belmont and was a member of the N.C. Board of Conservation and Development and the Governor's Business Council. He was commander of Cherryville American Legion Post 100, chairman of the Gaston County American Red Cross Board, a director of Coca-Cola Consolidated Board in Charlotte, a director of Public Service Gas Co. of Gastonia, and chairman and founder of Cablevision of Gastonia.
His honors include Distinguished Alumnus of Fork Union Military Academy in 1979, Most Outstanding Chief Executive Officer in the trucking industry by Financial World Magazine and The Wall Street Transcript for 1981-1982, a special resolution of appreciation by the mayor and City Council of Cherryville in 1981, N.C. Distinguished Citizens Award by Gov. Jim Hunt in 1983, N.C. Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. Jim Martin in 1985, and the Distinguished Service Award from UNC Charlotte in 1988.
He was a member of Cherryville Masonic Lodge No. 505, North Lake County Club in Shelby and Cherryville Country Club. He was a charter member of Grandfather Golf & Country Club in Linville and Capitol City Club in Raleigh.
He established scholarship at Fork Union Military Academy, Cleveland Community College, UNC Charlotte and Hephzibah Children's Home in Macon, Ga., where he stayed for two years as a young boy.
He was a major donor of the Blair Fraley Sales Store, a memorial to his granddaughter, Elizabeth Blair Fraley, at Crossnore School for Children in Crossnore; and the John L. "Buck" Fraley Baseball Field Renovation Fund for Cherryville High School and the American Legion Post 100.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two stepbrothers, Fred E. Isenhour and Walter E. Isenhour Jr.; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Blair Fraley.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret S. Fraley of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, John L. Jr. and Guyann Fraley and Allen R. and Susan Fraley of Cherryville; four grandchildren, Zachary Rhyne Fraley, Margaret Gail Fraley, Caroline Beam Fraley and Mary Grace Fraley, all of Cherryville; a brother, Harry Fraley of Seattle, Va.; a stepbrother, Dwight E. Isenhour of Taylorsville; a sister, Lillian Rhyne Long of Clinton; three half-sisters, Lois Fincher of Galax, Va., Martha Walker of Greensboro and Becky Church of High Point; and a stepsister, Edith Dickerson of Winston-Salem.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Cherryville, with the Revs. Kelley R. Jones and Jack H. Cooke officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be at City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence today from 2:30 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

SHELBY - Mrs. Ellen Naomia Brooks Roberts, 99, formerly of 700 Douglas St., died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Century Care of Shelby.
Born in Cleveland County on Feb. 9, 1901, she was a daughter of the late Rush and Lucy Ramseur Brooks. She was a graduate of Lincoln Academy and was employed by the Gordon Hamrick family for many years. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Roberts; four brothers, Lee Brooks, Lawrence Brooks, Carl Brooks and Robert Brooks; and four sisters, Annie B. Howell, Dotha B. Friday, Mammie B. Lowe and Ruth B. Jennings.
She is survived by one brother, James Booker T. Brooks of Kannapolis; and many nieces and nephews and friends.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Enloe Mortuary, with Dr. S.A. Raper officiating. Burial will be at Webb Memorial Lawns.
Carolyn Shaney
LAWNDALE - Mrs. Carolyn Ruth Rucker Shaney, 66, of 215 Jim Cline Road, died on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 14, 1934, in Gaston County, she was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Westmorland and Ruth Church Rucker.
She retired as a document control clerk at Ralph M. Parsons Co.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Eugene Shaney of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lisa and Dale Upton and Becky Padgett of Fallston; one brother, Frank Church of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joanne and Robert Young of Gastonia and Judy Roper of Grover; and four grandchildren, Jamie Padgett, Jason Padgett and Wes Upton of Fallston and Jason Upton of Gastonia.
