Novella Wallace
SHELBY - Miss Mattie Novella Wallace, formerly of 2102 McBrayer Springs Road, 89, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
Born March 27, 1911, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late David Lee and Dora Belle Turner Wallace. She was a member of Wallace Grove Baptist Church and had been a resident of Cleveland Pines for more than 10 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Wesley "Wes" Wallace, John Wallace and Charlie Wallace; and five sisters, Mamie W. Whitaker, Mary W. Owens, Pearl W. Fortenbury, Corene W. Kennedy and Ocie Wallace.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral is today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Norris Willis officiating. Burial will be at Wallace Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends an hour before the service at the funeral home.

Keith Ratchford
SHELBY - Mr. Keith B. Ratchford, 35, of 311 Martin St., died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
He was the son of Patsy Ratchford and James Leach, both of Shelby. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and was employed by Kentucky Fried Chicken.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James and Elease London, and a brother, Michael Ratchford.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Patricia London, Diane Harrison and Janice Ratchford of Shelby; seven uncles; eight aunts; two nieces; three nephews; and many other relatives.
The funeral will be Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Rev. Luke Curry officiating. Burial will be at Webb Memorials Lawns.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service.

SALISBURY - Mrs. Hattie Barnes, 69, of Autumn Care of Salisbury, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at her residence.

Charles Nicholson
CASAR - Mr. Charles R. Nicholson, 93, of 129-1 Judy Road, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born March 18, 1907, in Gloucester City, N.J., he was the son of the late Randall Nicholson and Hermia Morgan Kiker. He retired as a construction supervisor and was a published poet. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church for 21 years and a member of Famous Poet's Society of Anaheim, Calif. He won several awards of recognition, including Famous Poet for 1996, Outstanding Achievement in 1998 and 1999 and High Standard of Excellence in 1999.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a half brother, Armand "Bud" Kiker, and a sister, Anna N. Locke.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gladys Pearl Slim Nicholson of Casar; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Wayne Little of Casar and Mindy and Clarence Venable of Long Beach, Calif.; two granddaughters, Lois Little and Bonnie Little; and a great-grandchild, Jessica Trevathan.
The funeral was held Wednesday at Corinth Baptist Church, with the Rev. Norris Willis officiating.
The family received friends at the church.

Kenneth Lail
CHARLOTTE - Mr. Kenneth W. Lail, 75, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at his home.
A native of Rutherford County, he was an electrical contractor in Charlotte of his company the K.W. Lail Electric Co. from 1954 to 1976. He owned and operated the Park Lanes Bowling Alley until 1983. He served in the Navy in World War II. He was a charter member of Providence Baptist Church and the Meridan Masonic Lodge.
He was proceded in death by his father, brother and sister.
He is survived by one daughter, Dianne Watson of Greenville, S.C.; three sons, Wayne Lail, Phil Lail and Randy Lail, all of Charlotte; mother, Janelle Teague Lail of Cliffside; six brothers, Dwight Lail, Ned Lail, Joe Lail, Ray Lail and Mike Lail, all of Cliffside, and Max Lail of Nashville, N.C.; and one sister, Merle Dixon of Cliffside; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his former wife of 38 years, Elizabeth P. Lail.
The funeral is today at 2 p.m. at the Gordan Weekley Chapel of Providence Baptist Church, 4291 Randolph Rd., Charlotte, with the Rev. Bo Prosser officiating. A private graveside service will follow for the family at 3:30 p.m.
The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

Kate Crane
SHELBY - Mrs. Kate Shaw Crane of 1678 South Lafayette St. died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Jackson County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Janie Hall Shaw. She was a self-employed seamstress. She was a member of Zoar Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin "Bill" Crane; three brothers, Paul Shaw, Deward Shaw, J.B. Shaw; and four sisters, Mozelle Street, Udell Davis, Guynell Crowder, and Ruth Howe.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Sandy Crane of Boiling Springs; one daughter, Jeanne Crane of Shelby; one brother, Allen Shaw of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Leslie Windfield, Tracy Callaway, and Meagan Shull; and five great-grandchildren, Montana Winfield, Kiersten Winfield, Jagger Winfield, Drake Shull, and Cashe Callaway.
The funeral is today at 7 p.m. at Zoar Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Marvin Gobble officiating. Burial will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends today from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Zoar Baptist Church. The family will be at 1678 South Lafayette St., Shelby, at other times for visitation.

Grace Allen
SHELBY - Mrs. Grace Young Ennis Allen, 76, of 237 Navaho Trail, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at the home of her son in Shelby.
A native of Johnston County, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Lonnie Redden and Annie Lancaster Ennis. She was a graduate of Goldsboro High School, attended Mars Hill College and graduated from Hardbarger Business College. She worked for the N.C. Wildlife Commission and N.C. Employment Security Commission in Raleigh and Fayetteville before retiring in 1976 from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington library, with 23 years of service to the state of North Carolina. She was a member of Cape Fear Free Will Baptist Church and the Dogwood Garden Club, both in Wilmington.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Joseph E. Allen; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald J. and Carole M. Allen of Shelby; two grandchildren, Michelle L. Allen and Jeffrey Allen, both of Shelby; a brother, Eric Ennis of Raleigh; three sisters-in-law, Joann Ennis of Morehead City, Trudy Jordan of Raleigh and Joyce Poe of Murrell's Inlet, S.C.; two brothers-in-law and their spouses, Roy and Helen Allen and of Greensboro and Rudolph and Belle Allen of Clayton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Wednesday at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel in Goldsboro with the Revs. Patrick Hall, George C. Lee and Tim Hendrick officiating. Burial followed at Willow Dale Cemetary.
The family received friends Tuesday at Seymour Funeral Home.

Richard Greene
ST. GEORGE, S.C. - Mr. Richard L. "Rick" Greene, 50, of 607 North Parler Ave., died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, in St. George.
Born in Shelby, he was a son of the late Earl Stonewall and Margaret Hardin Greene. He was the general manager of Charleston Mitsubishi and was the former general sales manager of Gene Reed Enterprises. He graduated from Shelby High School and attended the St. George Church of God. He was a member of the National Automobile Dealers Association and S.C. Dealers Association and Executive Sales Society.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Etheredge Greene of St. George; two daughters, Alexis Reedlin (Lexi) Greene, of the home, and Kourtni Lynn Greene of Columbia, S.C.; two sons, Richard Shannon Greene of Charleston and Chasse Lynn Greene of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Ronnie Greene of Shelby; a stepfather, Ralph Willis of Shelby; and a granddaughter, Autumn Katelyn Greene of Summerville, S.C.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. George United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Dorchester Cemetery in Dorchester, S.C.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the Bryant Funeral Home, St. George.
Kimley Jones
FOREST CITY - Ms. Kimley Ann Jones, 44, of 409 Butler Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at her home.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Max Jones and the late Betty Whiteside Jones. She was a member of Drury Dobbins Baptist Church.
In addition to her father, she is survived by one son, Shane Chapman of Ellenboro; one brother, Don Jones of Ellenboro; two sisters, Sharon Hawkins of Ellenboro and Renee Laws of Lancaster, S.C.; and one grandchild.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Drury Dobbins Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ray Hooper officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

HOLLIS - Mrs. Perida Dayton Beaver, 95, of Campground Road, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at her home.
A native of Yancey County, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Big Springs Baptist Church and attended the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Tom Beaver of the home; three sons, Clarence Beaver of Bostic, J.B. Beaver and Henry McGinnis both of Hollis; two daughters, Mamie Beaver of the home and Mary Hubbard of Hollis; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Big Springs Baptist Church, with the Revs. Lawton Neely, Phil Bailey and Everett Priddy officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

SHELBY - Mrs. Dora Etta Ledbetter Blanton, 90, of 1151 Bridges St., died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Julia Cordor Ledbetter. She retired from Lily Mill Co. She was a member of the Lily Memorial Baptist Church and the Lily Mill Old Timers Club and was active at the senior center.
She was preceded in death by her husband Luther R. Blanton; four daughters, Betty Blanton, Julia B. Moss, Susan Dianne Blanton and Kathryn B. Bridges; one son-in-law, Denny M. Bridges; four brothers, Will Ledbetter, Smith Ledbetter, Authur Ledbetter and Marshal Ledbetter; and four sisters, Mary Waters, Anna Webb, Maggie Bivins and Nancy Dover.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William L. and Debra Blanton of Newton, and Harold D. "Doug" and Shirley Blanton of Casar; a daughter and two sons-in-law, Sadie B. and Carol Garver of Lawndale and James A. Moss of Shelby.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lily Memorial Baptist Church, with Dr. Ernest Arnold and the Rev. Marion Adams officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery.

CASAR - Mrs. Mattie Lee Canipe Hoyle, 80, of 1515 Casar-Lawndale Road, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born on June 27, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Summie and Florence Costner Canipe, a native of Cleveland County, a retired spinner at Dover Mill and a member of Casar United Methodist Church. She baked cakes for the public.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennie Canipe and Edward Canipe; and two sisters, Vangie Canipe and Ola Newton.
She is survived by her husband, Dick Hoyle of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Charles Holdsclaw of Belmont; a brother, Bob Canipe of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a sister, Ruby Odom of Hickory.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Casar United Methodist Church with the Revs. Richard Johnson and Joel Burton officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
