Georgia Cook
VALE - Mrs. Georgia Bradshaw Cook, 74, of 4267 Wise Road, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Hospice of Kirkwood.
Born in Catawba County Feb. 27, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Annie Pruette Bradshaw. She retired as a seamstress with North Hickory Furniture Co., and after retirement she enjoyed quilting. She was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, the church choir and the Women's Missionary Union.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Bradshaw and Leon Bradshaw; two sisters, Mary Shook and Ezelle Shook; and five infant brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Alvin Jessie Cook of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Cecil and Linda Cook and Ralph and Debbie Cook, all of Vale; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Phil Bryson of Kings Mountain; a brother, Bill Bradshaw of Vale; two sisters, Edith McNeely of Lawndale and Pansy Fulbright of Hickory; six grandchildren, Greg Cook, Scottie Cook, Paula Moss, Wesley Cook, Lee Dixon and Whitney Cook; and two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Moss and Georgia Moss.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Harold Cantrell and E.B. Elmore officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston.

R.C. Smith
LAWNDALE - Mr. R.C. Smith, 74, of 128 Big Hill Road, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born June 29, 1926, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Roscoe and Dessie Leonia Hudson Smith. He served in the Army during World War II and was retired from Century Furniture in Hickory.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Chapman Smith, and a brother, Cecil Smith.
He is survived by six daughters and three sons-in-law, Guynell and Jim Champion of Lawndale, Janet Hoyle of Lawndale, Shirley Hoyle of Morganton, Becky and Warren Holcombe of Morganton, Johana and Dale Lackey of Hiddenite and Mary Lou Woller of Sherrills Ford; a sister, Mary Dee Smith of Hickory; a special nephew, Danny Smith; a special grandson, Shannon Smith; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston, with the Revs. Jackie Price and Keith Fulbright officiating. Burial will be in Mount Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
Walter Hollifield
BURNSVILLE - Mr. Walter Roosevelt Hollifield, 92, of Yancey Nursing Center, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at his residence.
The funeral is today at 11 a.m. at Piedmont Baptist Church, with the Rev. Shane Duncan officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Dessie Parks
SHELBY - Mrs. Dessie Mae Eskridge Parks, 70, of 418 Hobbs Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
Born Aug. 15, 1930, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Lily T. June Hardy Eskridge. She worked for many years for Dr. Carl Naman. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Parks; her stepfather, Charles William; two sisters, Marcella Parks and Louise Eskridge Webber; and two brothers, Robert Eskridge and Claude Eskridge.
She is survived by two daughters, Lola P. Kelly and Bernice P. Phillips; four sons, Robert L. Parks, Thomasene Parks, Bobby G. Parks and Ricky L. Parks, all of Shelby; one sister, Francis McCluney of Shelby; 25 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.

Preston Sigmon
MORGANTON - Mr. Preston "Sig" Sigmon, 77, of Pony Street, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Grace Hospital.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Walker Road Baptist Church, with the Revs. Mike Hatton and Burl Sain officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Lawndale.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Sossoman Funeral Home in Morganton. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 101 Pony St., Morganton.
Dr. J.D. Copeland
RUTHERFORDTON - Dr. James D. Copeland, 93, formerly of Boiling Springs and Spartanburg, S.C., died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at White Oak Manor in Rutherfordton.
He was a native of Brundidge (Pike County), Ala., and the son of the late Samuel and Ola Dewberry Copeland. He graduated from the University of Florida with bachelor's and master's degrees and received his doctorate in education from New York University. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving throughout the Pacific Theater as an officer and navigator. He retired from Gardner-Webb University and Erskine College, where he taught business. He also taught business at Mississippi State College for Women, Georgia State College for Women and Washington and Lee University. He formerly owned Robinson Business College of Spartanburg and was an active Kiwanis Club member there.
Dr. Copeland was known as "The Birdman" because of his involvement with the study of North American migratory birds, actively banding them and tracking their migratory patterns. He was also an avid bridge player.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Frances Buchanan Copelan, and a sister, Irene Caton.
He is survived by a daughter, Betty Johnson and her husband, Gary, of Lake Lure; four grandchildren, Susan Clark and her husband, Steve; David White and his wife, Tammy; Neal Kittredge and Leslie Kittredge; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby, with Dr. Delores Queen officiating.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. before the service at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Willie Lott
SHELBY - Mr. Willie Junior Lott, 52, of 608 Hamrick St., died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Maebell Winters Lott of Shelby and the late Willie Lott. He was retired from Esther Mill after 25 years of service. He was also a self-employed plumber, a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Edna Hamilton Lott of Shelby; a son, Jerome Lott of Shelby; two daughters, Tracy Williams of West Memphis, Ark., and Jwalea Griffen McDowell of Charlotte; two stepsons, Keith Hamilton and Rufus Hamilton, both of Shelby; four sisters, Annie Rice and Bonita Culberth, both of Shelby, Mattie Adams of Kings Mountain and Mary Hartgrove of Grover; a grandchild; a father-in-law and mother-in-law, Thomas and Elease Hamilton of Shelby; a special nephew, Gregory Lott of Waco; six sisters-in-law; nine brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. R.W. Fuller officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

BOSTIC - Mrs. Hazel Wilson, 84, of 163 Heritage Lane, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at her home.

Wilbur McKnight
WHISPERING PINES - Mr. Wilbur Earle McKnight, 67, of Whispering Pines, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at his residence.
A native of Charleston, W. Va., he worked for Union Carbide for 39 years.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann T. McKnight; a son, Paul McKnight of Shelby; three daughters, Ellen McIlhenny, of Richmond, Va., Lori Kerr and Lisa Earley, both of Cary; a brother, Frank McKnight of Hurricane, W. Va.; and 11 grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Powell Funeral Home with Dr. Mark Wethington officiating. Burial will follow in Pinelawn Memorial Park.

A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Rufus and Ida Heavner Robbins. She was a homemaker and a member of Community Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Duarde Walker and a grandson, James Billy Head.
She is survived by two brothers, Jim Robbins of Blacksburg, S.C., and Yates Robbins of Patterson Springs; two sisters, Frances Wall of Grover and Mazelle Shehan of Shelby; and two grandchildren, Teresa Harris and Johnny Head, both of Waco.

SHELBY - Mrs. Louise Russell Bennett, 60, formerly of Abraham, W.Va., died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born February 16, 1940, in Abraham, she was the daughter of the late Overton and Bessie Harvey Russell. She was a retired machine operator. She was a former resident of Hinton, W.Va., and a member of New Salem Baptist Church in Abraham.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Paul Bennett.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Alvin Paul Bennett Jr. of Mooresboro and Bruce Dale and Regina Bennett of Shelby; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vicky Louise Cox, Debra Lynn and Billy Fields and Janet Carol and Frankie Fields, all of Shelby; a brother, Arnold Russell of Rainelle, W.Va.; five sisters, Faye Miller and Juanita Mize, both of Hinton, Patty Whittaker of Rainelle, Mickey Allen of Ventura, Calif., and Hilda Pratt of Shady Spring, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 11 a.m at New Salem Baptist Church in Abraham, with the Rev. John Richmond officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
