Howard Lemmons
LAWNDALE - Mr. Howard Lee Lemmons, 76, of 140 Big Hill Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Grace Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, he was preceded in death by his father, Whitford Lemmons and his mother and stepfather, Nellie Anthony Lemmons and the Rev. John Glover. He was employed at Hickory Springs Manufacturing Co. for 31 years and was a member of Bingham Memorial Envangelical Methodist Church.
In addition to his father, mother and stepfather, he was preceded in death by three brothers, the Rev. Virgil Glover, Oliver Glover and J.P. Glover; and two sisters, Edna Lloyd and Katie Earwood.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Edna Tallent Lemmons of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Beauford Ray and Kathy Lemmons of Hickory; a daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Dean Arndt of Lawndale; a son-in-law, Ronnie Mellon of Lawndale; a sister, Marie Towery of Lawndale; two grandsons, Chris Lemmons and Andrew Mellon; three granddaughters and their husbands, Wendy and Eric Bailey, Amy and Jason Costner and Angela Mellon; and a great-granddaughter, Karman Bailey.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel in Fallston with the Revs. Kenneth Frady and Scott Pacifico officiating.
Burial will follow at Olive Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

Betty Whisnant
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Betty Sue McFarland Whisnant, 70, of 610 Pine Street Extension, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital in Rutherfordton.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mount Moriah United Methodist Church Cemetery in Casar with the Rev. Scott Butler officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen.

Dr. McMurry Wilkins Jr.
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Dr. McMurry Wilkins Jr., 81, of 303 Sweetbriar Road, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Saint Francis Hospital.
A native Shelby, he was a son of the late Bonnie Lear and Mac Wilkins. He moved to Greenville at an early age and was a graduate of Greenville High School, Furman University and Tulane Medical School. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Bowman-Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem. He served as a medical officer in World War II aboard the USS San Francisco, retiring as lieutenant commander. He practiced Internal Medicine in Greenville, retiring after 42 years. He was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church and was a former teacher of the John M. Holmes class. He served as the president of the staff at Saint Francis Hospital for two years and was a member of the Greenville County Medical Society, the South Carolina Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the Internal Medical Association.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Cochran Wilkins; his three children, McMurry Wilkins III of Taylors, Janice Cochran Wilkins of Greenville and Cary Cochran Wilkins of North Augusta; and a grandson and his wife, McMurry Todd and Kelli Wilkins of Travelers Rest.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to Saint Francis Hospital, St. Francis Drive, Greenville, SC 29601.
Arrangements are by Mackey Mortuary.

Vivian Vassy
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mrs. Vivian P. Vassy, 89, of 405 Anthony St., died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cherokee County, she was a daughter of the late Mose and Fanny Spencer Pinson. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Gaffney.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W.L. Vassy.
She is survived by five sons, L. Kenneth Vassy of Shelby, W. Steven Vassy of Chesnee, S.C., and B. David Vassy, J. Michael Vassy and Richard B. Vassy, all of Gaffney; a brother, Raymond L. Pinson of Gaffney; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home with the Revs. Joel Sellers, Ronnie Cox, and Scott Hammett and Dr. Terry Duvall officiating.
Burial will follow at Frederick Memorial Gardens. The Dorcas Sunday school class will be pallbearers.
The family will receive friends an hour and a half before the service at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 100 E. Floyd Baker Blvd., Gaffney, SC 29340, or to the charity of the donors choice.

Irene Wyatt
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Mrs. Irene DeBrule Wyatt, 87, of 27 Conestee Ave. and formerly of Rutherford County, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Brighton Gardens Health Care Center.
Born in Henrietta on April 21, 1913, she was a daughter of the late John Dixon and Mealie McKinney DeBrule. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Henrietta where she served as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader and was a choir member. She was a member of several senior groups and the Democratic Party.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Yvonne Ann Wyatt.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald F. and Ruby Wyatt of Ellenboro and the Rev. Carl W. and Joy Wyatt of Maiden; a daughter and son-in-law, Gwen Wyatt and Max Kennedy of Greenville; eight grandchildren, Debby W. Funderburk, Rickey Wyatt, Mealie Wyatt, the Rev. Marc Wyatt, the Rev. Eric Wyatt, Carla W. Payne, Carole K. Flaspoehler and Lara K. Mayers; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ethel and Tom Bradford of Forest City and Georgie Benson of Ellenboro; a sister-in-law and spouse, Yates and Polly DeBrule; two nephews, R. Don Benson of Charleston, S.C., and Scott DeBrule of Boone; and a niece, Robbie D. Pickrell of Landis.
Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside with her grandchildren and the Rev. Jerry Brooks of Temple Baptist Church officiating.
The body will be on view one hour before the service at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends after the service.
A private burial will follow at High Shoal Baptist Church Cemetery. Wyatt's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Ben Holcomb
MOORESBORO - Mr. Benjamine A. "Ben" Holcomb, 79, of 125 Sourwoode Road, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Gaston County, he was a son of the late Martin Luther and Emily Biddy Holcomb. He was a retired sergeant in the Army with 21 years of service, including in World War II and Korea. He was a member of Walls Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Bailey Holcomb of the home; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Vaughn and Vickie Holcomb of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Terry Holcomb and Gary Holcomb, both of Mooresboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Dale McCurry of Shelby; two sisters, Geraldine Gregory of Blacksburg, S.C., and Helen Summitt of Gastonia; and three grandsons, Brad McCurry, Michael Holcomb and Matt Holcomb.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside with the Rev. Roger Overton and Mickey Heyward officiating.
A graveside service will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Demyris Roberts
SHELBY - Mr. Demyris Sentell Roberts, 21, of 321 Morrison St., died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in Kings Mountain.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of Donald Maurice and Oinette Morrow Roberts of the home. He was employed at Glaze Components.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mayola Hopper, Jesse Junior Morrow and Roger Roberts.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a grandmother, Madge Roberts of Kingstown; two brothers, Jerry Degree of Shelby and Demetrist Roberts of the home; a sister, Tabatha Degree of Shelby, a godmother, Barbara Dean Harper of Shelby; eight aunts; and five uncles.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Shoal Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Isaac officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.
Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

H.C. Allen Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. Hill Carl Allen Jr., 81, of 300 N. Post Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the home.
A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Hill Carl and Sarah Nannie Allen. He retired from the N.C. Department of Highways, Division 12, after 35 years service and was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church and Cleveland Masonic Lodge No. 202.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Smith Allen; a son, Steve Allen of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane Allen and Mike Helton of Hickory; a sister, Inez Allen of Shelby; two stepgrandsons, Wesley and Ricky Helton; two grandchildren and their spouses, Bryan and Shelby Hord and Betsy and Richard James, all of Shelby; two great-grandchildren, Amanda James and Melissa James; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Mindy Hoyle, Tiffany Hoyle and Vanessa Hoyle.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jeff Brendle officiating.
The family will receive friends today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Marshall London
MOORESBORO - Mr. Marshall Owen London, 69, of 4728 Ellenboro Road, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at his home.
A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Miller O. and Ruth Layton London. He was a retired plumber from JW Davis Co. He was an Army veteran and a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Melton London of the home; a son, Marshall Douglas London of Ellenboro; a daughter, Debbie London Adams of Bostic; a brother, Billy London of Hickory; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Sandy Run Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Hendrick officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside.

Dorothy Hord
LAWNDALE - Mrs. Dorothy Anne Cline Hord, 74, of 118 Hord Road, died Wednes-day, Jan. 24, 2001, at her home.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Edward Dewey and Ruby Lattimore Cline. She was one of the first 100 women to be admitted to Wake Forest University and became one of their first cheerleaders. She has been a journalist for the Shelby Star and for a Florida newspaper. She also taught school at Piedmont High School in Lawndale, after which she became a homemaker and took care of her four children. She also served community churches as their choir director. She was a member of Lawndale Baptist Church and was active in civic and community organizations in the Cleveland County and Shelby areas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Dorcas White.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Dwight Beam Hord; one son and a daughter-in-law, Ed and Jean Hord of Charlotte; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Ellen and Rick Wease of Lawndale and Jean and Dave Roberts of Boone and Anne Walker of Charlotte; eight grandchildren, Tyler Hord, Chuck Wease, Ricky Wease, Kimberly Wease, Max Borders, Abby Walker, Ivey Mauney and Davis Roberts; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew Wease, Kaitlyn Wease and Caleb Wease.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Lawndale Baptist Church with the Revs. Paul Williams and John Bridges officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Stamey Funeral Home.

Ronnie Hensley
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Ronnie Alvin Hensley, 44, of 403 Brice St., died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of Gene and Lois Hughes Hensley of Dallas. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain. He was an honorary member of Pi Kappa Phi and served on the board of directors of the Hemophilia Foundation of North Carolina.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Karen Baldonado of Kings Mountain; two sons, Lee Baldonado of Hickory and Kenneth Baldonado of Charlotte; one daughter, Shelby Baldonado of Kings Mountain; one brother, Ricky Hensley of Gastonia; and a grandmother, Ruby Hughes of Forest City.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church with Dr. Ralph Wallace officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain and at other times at the home of Ray and Joyce Howell, 310 N. Cansler St. in King's Mountain.

SHELBY - Mrs. Mae Ogle Childers, 97, of 112 Palmer St., died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
No service will be held. Arrangements are by Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Lucille Key
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Lucille Lawrence Key, 99, of White Oak Manor, formerly of Peter Key Road in Lawndale, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at her home.
A native Putnam County, Ga., she was born Nov. 8, 1901, a daughter of the late Berry Allen and Vinnie Lawrence. She was a member of Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Lodge No. 3.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Key; one sister, Mary E. Key; and two brothers, Johnny Lawrence Sr. and Grady Lawrence Sr.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Pearl Lawrence of Lawndale; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder John Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service and at other times at the home place of the late Cotie and Lola Lawrence, 616 Casar-Belwood Road in Lawndale.
Dockery's Home of Funerals Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Rosie Wilkie
SPINDALE - Ms. Rose Lee Wilkie, 93, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Thompson Brothers Funeral Home in Forest City.
