Mildred Morrison
SHELBY - Mrs. Mildred Sweezy Morrison, 79, of 1629 Barbee Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born May 22, 1921, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Zunnie Deadaro Brackett Sweezy. She was retired from Cleveland Mills after 35 years service and was a member of Lawndale United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Fred Owen Morrison; two brothers, Roy F. Sweezy and Clyde W. Sweezy and a sister, Evelyn S. Skinner.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Delores and Charles Wagley of Lawndale, Jane and Dean Wright of Shelby and Jean Morrison of Hickory; two sisters-in-law, Jessie Sweezy of Shelby and Elizabeth Sweezy of Charlotte; three grandsons, Jamey Hawkins and his wife, Lynn, Steve Minnix and his wife, Heather, and Lee Hawkins and his fiancée, Laurel Beecher; one granddaughter, Amy Hamilton and her husband, Charles; six great-grandchildren, Natalie Hamilton, Ben Hamilton, Jaye Hawkins, Josh Hawkins, Brianna Hawkins and Madeline Hawkins; and special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Jones of Rutherfordton, Dorothy Lee of Lawndale, and Dr. Surendra Sidhu of Shelby.
The funeral was Thursday night at Stamey Funeral Home with the Rev. Ben Davis and Fred Towery officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family received friends Thursday at Stamey Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Life Enrichment Center, 1270 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

Dean Henson
EASLEY, S.C. - Mr. J. Dean Henson, 68, of 104 E. Croydon Court, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Saint Francis Hospital.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late L.H. and Nora Ford Henson. He was a former truck driver with J.P. Stevens and P.Y.A. Monarch. Dean enjoyed music and was active in gospel music ministries for many years. He led music at Pendleton Street Baptist Church and Cedar Rock Baptist Church, where he was a member.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Humphries Henson, of the home; one daughter, Kathy Henson of Easley; one son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Jean Henson of Charlotte; and two granddaughters, Ellen Henson and Jillian Henson, both of Charlotte.
The funeral will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at the chapel of Dillard Memorial Funeral Home with the Revs. Bobby Goodwin, Bobby Caldwell and Douglas Humphries officiating. Burial will follow in Robinson Memorial Gardens.
Honorary escorts will be the men's Sunday School Class of Cedar Rock Baptist Church and truck driver friends from P.Y.A. Monarch and J.P. Stevens.
The family will receive friends two hours before the service and at other times at the home. The body will be at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Rocky Bottom Camp of the Blind, 123 Hancock Road, Sunset, SC 29685.

Diane Shelton
FOREST CITY - Ms. Diane Shelton, 31, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Elizabeth House in Hendersonville.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Thompson Brothers Funeral Home.

Bruno J. Raco
SHELBY - Mr. Bruno Joseph Raco, 93, of 3003 Courtland Drive, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Reggio Calabria, Italy, he was the son of the late Giuseppi and Mariantonia Armeni Raco. He was a retired assistant chief quality control officer and statistical analyst for Defense Clothing and Supply Co. of Philadelphia. He was a past president of Italian-American Club of Pennsauken, N.J., and was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Maple Shade, N.J.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Calciano Raco; a brother Dominic; and a granddaughter, Debbie Hurst and her husband, Wayne.
He is survived by one son and one daughter-in-law, Joseph D. and Emma Raco of Paradise, Calif.; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Loy White of Shelby; one sister, Lee Miller of Sea Isle City, N.J.; one sister-in-law, Marie Raco of Ventnor, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Joseph D. Raco Jr. and wife Ellen of California, John Raco of California, Billy White, Joe White and Jeff White, all of the home, Linda Seabrook and husband Reese of Texas, and David Raco-Hurst of California; and one great-grandchild, Christine Raco of California.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer with the Rev. Gene McDowell officiating. Burial will be Thursday, Feb. 1 at Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson, N.J.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Preston Cross Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. Preston Lamar Cross Jr., 40, of 1110 Spann St., died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center.
He was born April 17, 1960, the son of Mary Louise Cross of Lawndale and the late Preston Lamar Cross Sr. He was employed by Universal Manufactory of Grover.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, E.H. and Mary L. Downs.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Linda Byers Cross of Lincolnton; one daughter, Deitia Banks of Shelby; two sons, Antwan Dawkins of Kings Mountain and Michael Dewayne Byers of Morganton; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Anthony and Altheia P. Cross of Lawndale, Melvin Cross of Lawndale, Carl Lee Cross of London, England; one granddaughter; three grandsons; and other relatives.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. B.D. Houze officiating.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and at other times at 209 New Hope Road, Lawndale.
Genesis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SHELBY - Mrs. Dorothy Mullinax White, 58, of 321 Washburn Switch Road, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at her home.

SHELBY - Mrs. Rebecca Hughes Hardin, 92, of White Oak Manor, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at White Oak Manor.

David Wimbush Sr.
LAWNDALE - Mr. David Lee Wimbush Sr., 77, of 2873 Selkirk Road, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Dorothy White
SHELBY - Mrs. Dorothy Mae Mullinax White, 58, of 321 Washburn Switch Road, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at her home.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Jesse James and Flossie Jane Humphries Mullinax. She retired from Dover Textile Group, where she was a spinner for 20 years. She was a Baptist.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Ray "Bruno" White; and a daughter, Brenda Ann White.
She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Melinda and Glenn Drake and Patricia Byer and her fiance, Pete, all of Shelby; one son and one daughter-in-law, Jesse and Marie Bowen of Shelby; three stepsons, Jackie Bowen of Shelby, Eddie Bowen of Barnswell, S.C., and Everette Bowen; eight grandchildren, Christopher Drake, Crystal Drake, Brian Painter, Lee Lee Bowen, Christina Bowen, Jenifer Bowen, Marcus Bowen and Lance Owens; seven brothers, Joe Mullinax of Grover, Arthur Mullinax, John Bolin and William Bolin, all of Shelby, John Henry Mullinax of Cherokee Falls, S.C., and James Bolin and Walter Bolin, both of Chesnee, S.C.; and three sisters, Frances Upchurch of Gaffney, S.C., Betty Peeler of Shelby and Louise Self of Blacksburg, S.C.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services with the Rev. Billy Bowen officiating. Burial will be in the Faith Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at 321 Washburn Switch Road in Shelby.

J. Frank Wells Sr.
HENRIETTA - Mr. J. Frank Wells Sr. of Henrietta died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen.

Paul Jones
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mr. Paul William Jones, 88, of 104 Ashmore Drive, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A graveside service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Bell officiating. The family will receive friends after the service and at other times at the home.
White-Columns Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Cynthia Brooks
SHELBY - Mrs. Cynthia Diane Brooks, 37, of 513 Oakland Drive, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, Lucrecia T. Brooks at 302 Lineberger St., Shelby.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Genesis Funeral Services.

Charles Evans
FOREST CITY - Mr. Charles W. Evans, 72, of 482 Womack Lake Road, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home with the Revs. Richard Prendergrast and Ronnie Robbins officiating.
Burial will be in the Caroleen-Henrietta Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Rosa Wilkie
SPINDALE - Ms. Rosa L. Wilkie, 94, of 805 Miller St., died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Saint Paul A.M.E. Zion Church in Forest City with the Rev. Mildred Twitty officiating. The body will be placed in the church an hour before the service.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Thompson Brothers Funeral Home, Forest City, is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Burns
ELLENBORO - Mr. Kenneth Levi Burns, 65, of Ellenboro, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Lincoln County Hospital.
A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Clarence L. and Nannie Mae Helton Burns. He retired from Duke Power Co. after 25 years of service. He served in the Army for 10 years.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Street Burns; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenny and Beverly Burns of Ellenboro and David and Ginger Burns of Shelby; one brother, James Burns of Ellenboro; one sister, Martha Freeman of Ellenboro; and a special friend, Charcoal Burns.
The funeral was held Sunday at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rob Philbeck officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
The family received friends Saturday at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside.

Winston Shull
SHELBY - Mrs. Winston Smith Shull, 69, of 1310 Wesson Road, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Ellijay, Ga., she was born May 17, 1931, the daughter of the late Dr. Robert Winston Smith and Mary Elsie Moye Smith Birdsall. She worked with Cleveland County Health Department as a medical technician and was a member of Central United Methodist Church, serving on the altar guild, in the church choir and as a life member of United Methodist Women. She was a graduate of Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga., and the University of North Carolina in 1951. She taught needlepoint through Cleveland Community College, served on the board of directors of the Cleveland County Fair Association, was former chief registrar for Shelby Precinct No. 7 and a former member of the Cleveland County Board of Elections.
She is survived by her husband, George Henderson Shull; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Bryan and Beth McCulloch Shull of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sara Shull and Glenn Mertes of Charlotte and Marywinn and Dicky Amaya of Shelby; and nine grandchildren and their spouses, Christine Mertes Salmon and her husband Ron of Milwaukee, Mary Mertes Williams and her husband Eric and Brittany Mertes, all of Charlotte, Anna Carole Mertes of Raleigh and Evan Amaya, Cora Amaya, Isabel Amaya, Wes Shull and Will Shull, all of Shelby.
The memorial service is today at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, with Dr. Joe Reeves officiating. Burial will be at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family received friends Sunday at the home of her daughter, Marywinn Amaya.

Myrtle Dover
SHELBY - Mrs. Myrtle Hoppes Dover, 97, of White Oak Manor in Shelby, formerly of 116 Palmer St., died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at her residence.
Born Jan. 7, 1904, in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late Noah and Pantha Smith Hoppes. She was a homemaker and a member of Zoar Baptist Church, where she was the oldest member of the congregation and had worked in the nursery for more than 40 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Graham Dover, and three brothers, Fred Hoppes, Carl Hoppes and Warner Hoppes.
She is survived by a brother, Arnold Hoppes of Drexel; a sister, Maude Davidson of Shelby; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Zoar Baptist Church, with Dr. Marvin Gobble officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of her niece, Donie Dec, 823 East Marion St., Apartment 2, Shelby.

MayBelle Lane
UNION MILLS - Mrs. MayBelle Davis Lane, 79, of 5208 U.S. Highway 64, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at her home.
Born in Rutherford County June 13, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Helon and Hester Heaton Davis. She was a homemaker and a furniture factory worker. She was a member of Cane Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Carl Lane of Union Mills; a son, Monty Lane of Boiling Springs; a daughter, Brenda Sigmon of Conover; a brother, J.B. Davis, and sister Mary Lee Lane, both of Union Mills; and five grandchildren, Daniel Dimsdale of Rutherfordton, James Dimsdale and Lindsey Lane of Boiling Springs, Scott Lane of Morganton and Kaylah Sigmon of Conover.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Cane Creek Baptist Church, with the Revs. Earl Waters and Lance Scarlet and evangelist John Hutchins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Crowe's Funeral Chapel.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be made to Cane Creek Baptist Church, 151 Cane Creek Mountain Road, Union Mills, NC 28167.
