KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Tommy "Shorty" Bowen, 69, of 202 Jim Patterson Road, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.
A native of Cleveland County, he was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Mary Clary Bowen; and his second wife, Agness Fredell Bowen.
He was a Baptist, a member of the National Guard and retired from Bost Bakery in 1992.
He is survived by his first wife, Eva Swafford Bowen of Shelby; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Dianne Bowen of Lattimore; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and the Rev. David Waldrop of Lawndale; a stepdaughter, Patsy Moses Foster of Kings Mountain; a stepson, Boyce William Moses of California; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Rev. David Waldrop officiating. Entombment will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Odies Stinchcomb
SHELBY - Mr. Odies Clarence "Pop" Stinchcomb, 73, of 700 W. Warren St., died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at White Oak Manor of Shelby.
A native of Griffin, Ga., he was a son of the late William Calvin and Alice Pirkle Stinch-comb.
He retired from the textile field as a research and development mechanic. He was in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He attended New Bethel Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Inez Blanton.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Sisk Stinchcomb of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kim and Cindi Stinchcomb of Kings Mountain, Dan and Marilyn Stinchcomb of Palatka, Fla., and Scott Stinchcomb of Shelby; three brothers, Curtis Stinchcomb of Griffin, Ga., and Fred Stinchcomb and Jimmy Stinchcomb, both of Fallston; four sisters, Willie Mae Hicks of Shelby, Evelyn Hannon of Kings Mountain, Naomi Wright of Lawndale and Shirley Ann Boggus of Sherill Ford; four grandchildren, Kimberly Stinchcomb, Ashley Stinchcomb, both of Kings Mountain, and Michael Stinchcomb and Melissa Stiner, both of Palatka; and one great-grandchild, Shelby Marie Stiner of Palatka.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at New Bethel Church of the Nazarene with the Revs. Reed Jones, Robert Andress and Don McSwain officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.

SHELBY - Kyle Ray Martin, 3 months old, of 415 Mauney Lane, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2001, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born Oct. 25, 2000, a son of Jay and Nancy Martin.
He was preceded in death by his great-great-grandparents, John and Dovie Mode.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Tommy and Angie Tate of Shelby and Dean and Bonnie Martin of Kings Mountain; four uncles, Ryan Mayes of Cherryville, Charlie Mayes of Shelby, and Chris Martin and Nathan Martin, both of Kings Mountain; great-grandparents, Joe and JoAnne Whisnant, Melvin and Beverly Johnson, Gene Brown and Bernard and Rosanne Fitzgerald, all of Shelby.
A graveside service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Calvin Morrison officiating.

CHERRYVILLE - Ms. Frances Leona Baxter, 73, of Carolina Care Cottages, 111 Harrilson Road, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Lincoln County, she was born Sept. 1, 1927, a daughter of the late Ben Frank and Neva Hoyle Baxter. She worked in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and retired as an instructor with Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte. She was a member of Bess Chapel United Methodist Church in Cherryville.
She is survived by one nephew, Brent Baxter and his wife, Lisa, of Hickory; two nieces, Annette Brown Eaker and her husband, Blair, of Cherryville, and Amanda Baxter Carr and her husband, Curtis, of Richmond,Va.; two great-nieces; three great-nephews; one brother and one sister-in-law, Larry and Phyllis Baxter of Cherryville; and one sister, Norma Baxter Brown of Cherryville.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Stein officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Willie Welsby
SHELBY - Mr. Willie B. Welsby, 78, of 820 Colonial Manor Apartment 4D, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born on April 15, 1922, in Aggie-ville, Ga., he was a son of the late George and Ester Sparks Welsby. He attended Palmer Grove School and was a member of Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church.
He was retired from Ville Furniture Co. for 13 years.
He served in the military.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Lee Welsby; and a stepson, Roy Ramseur.
He is survived by his wife, Angianette Price Welsby; two stepsons and a stepdaughter-in-law, Cal Ramseur Jr. of Charlotte and Otis F. and Ruth Ramseur of Havelock; three stepdaughters and a stepson-in-law, Linda Ramseur Williams, Nora Ramseur Steed and Frances Ramseur and Charles Dewitt, all of Charlotte; three sisters, Rosie Lee Cady of San Antiono, Fla., Bessie Pearson of Day City, Fla., and Classie M. Thomas of Harrisburg, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Mary Welsby of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church in Shelby with the Rev. E.J. Parson officiating.
Burial will be at Webb Memorial Lawns.

SHELBY - Mr. Aaron Harold Gill, 65, of 1222 White Ave., died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Walter and Marie Byers Gill. He was a retired employee of Hoechst Celanese, where he worked for 35 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Lillie "Dee" Coleman Gill; and two brothers, William Otis Gill and Raymond Ted Gill.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters - in - law, Harold Lee and Carol Gill of Fayetteville, Deannie Aaron and Jennie Gill and Jackie Franklin, all of Shelby; one brother, Thurman Gill of Shelby; one sister, Roberta Gill of Shelby; seven grandchildren, Antwan M. Gill, Tyson D. Gill, Harold L. Gill Jr., Candane Duncan, Steven E. Curry, Shelby N. Curry and Samantha D. Curry; and a special friend, Eloise Guest.
The funeral will be Thursday at noon at New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. A.A. Ponder officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

John Clark
SHELBY - Mr. John T. Clark, 95, of 383 Preyer St., died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Jones County, Ga., he was a son of the late Lewis and Annie Bell Clark. He worked as a cook at Buffalo Fish Camp for 30 years and also farmed. He retired 22 years ago. He was a member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Lawndale and the NAACP.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Ophelia Vinson Clark; two sons, Harry Clark and Richard Clark; two daughters, Bula Clark and Ruby Clark Webber; two brothers Richard Clark and Sam Clark; five sisters, Patience Clark, Georgia Lawrence, Ella Mae Odoms, Mollie Grimes and Jessie Maddox.
He is survived by two daughters, Laurene Clark and Eula Clark Logan, both of Shelby; a brother, Leroy Vinson Sr. of Lawndale; two sisters - in - law, Massie V. Williams of Shelby and Alvester Vinson of Lawndale; two daughters - in - law, Kathryn M. Clark and Bernice W. Clark of Shelby; an aunt, Pearl Coates Lawrence of Lawndale; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great - grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church with Elder James Benton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Allen Smith
GASTONIA - Mr. Allen Al Smith, 50, of 1935 Oak Hollow Road, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001.
A native of Spartanburg County, S.C., he was the son of Rosemary Ferguson Smith of Spartanburg and the late Daniel David Smith. He was a member of the Mount Hebron Greater Baptist Church of Gastonia, where he was a member of the Mass Choir and served as a Sunday school teacher. He was a graduate of South Carolina State University with a bachelor of arts degree. He was a supervisor with Copeland Corp. of Shelby.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Brenda Smith Smith of the home; two daughters, Tracie Laurelle Smith of Dallas, N.C., and Sabrina Renae Smith of the home; two brothers, David Smith and Vincent Smith, both of Spartanburg; one sister, Patricia Smith of Spartanburg; and four grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by seven brothers, John Whittenburg, Josh Whittenburg, Walter Whittenburg, Dewey Whittenburg, Arthur Whittenburg, George Whittenburg and Lewis Whittenburg; and three sisters, Louvinia Woods, Josie Whittenburg, and Etta W. Gentry.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Selonia Whittenburg of Gaffney; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George S. Roberson; a daughter, Sylvia Roberson Allen; a sister, Inez Jolley; and two brothers, Raleigh Biggerstaff and G.C. Fisher.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ronald David "Butch" and Joyce Roberson of Shelby, and Richard S. "Dickey" Roberson of Bowling Green, Ky.; a sister, Margie Phillips of Hickory; two brothers, Jack Biggerstaff or Greenville, S.C., and Buzzy Biggerstaff of Boiling Springs; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 14 great- great-grandchildren.
