RUTHERFORDTON - Ms. Carrie Bell Smith, 79, of 403 N. Ridge Crest St., died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at her home.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at St. John AME Zion Church in Rutherfordton with the Rev. Jackie Doggett officiating. Burial will be in Rutherford County Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Evelyn Machen
ASHEVILLE - Mrs. Evelyn McMicken Machen, 87, of 60 Buffalo St., died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Mountain Area Hospice in Asheville.
A native of Asheville, she was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Genie Walker McMickens. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church. She was retired from the Econolodge Motel. She was formerly employed at the Battery Park Hotel for a number of years and Oteen V.A. Hospital, where she was a dietician aid for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Machen Sr.; a son, Harold Machen Jr.; two brothers, Wilbert McMickens and Thomas J. McMickens Jr.; and one sister, Pauline McMickens Long.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Parthenia M. and Johnny Hemphill of Asheville and Mamie Jean Machen of the home; a daughter-in-law, Anna Laura Machen of Silver Spring, Md.; two sisters-in-law, Ruth M. King of Asheville and Lucille McMickens of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren, Shawn Hallums, Johnetta Hardy, Leslie Hennessee and Kenneth Brenell, all of Asheville, Quinton Machen and Dwight Machen, both of Silver Spring, Lynette Alexander of Atlanta, JoAnn Hall of Durham, and Johnny Hemphill Jr. of Washington, D.C.; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a friend and family member, Virginia Bozeman; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church with the Rev. R.J. Young officiating.
Viewing will be at Ray and Allen Funeral Services, 127 McDowell St., Asheville, on Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. and one before the service on Monday at the church.
Burial will be at Violet Hill Cemetery.

Donald Goins
CASAR - Mr. Donald Ray Goins, 53, of 146 Corinth Church Road, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Omaha, Neb., he was the son of Edith Goins of Diagonal, Iowa, and the late Lloyd Goins. He was a crop adjuster for the federal government. He was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan, and he loved country music, dancing and his many friends and neighbors.
In addition to his father, he was preceeded in death by his wife, June Ann Goins.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Darin Goins of Murray, Iowa; four stepsons, Robert England of Casar, Jerry England of Bagley, Iowa, Dennis Egland of Fort Worth, Texas, and Terry England of Wellman, Iowa; two stepdaughters, Carol Kinder of Hatfield, Mo., and Tammy Samo of Villisca, Iowa; one brother, Jim Goins of Diagonal; three sisters, Shirley Jones of Joplin, Mo., Linda Vanpelt of Urbandale, Iowa, and Betty Greenlee of Pleasantville, Iowa; two half brothers, Lloyd Goins of Axtell, Kan., and Bill Goins of Topeka, Kan.; 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home with the Revs. Thomas Irvin and Lloyd Hunt officiating. The burial will be at a later date in Clearfield Cemetery, Clearfield, Iowa.
The family will receive friends for an hour and a half before the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Robert England, 135 Golden Valley Road, Casar.

Mary Moore
BOILING SPRINGS - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Jones Moore, 88, of 1230 S. College Ave., died Friday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
A native of Wadesboro, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin C. and Rita Flake Jones. She was a retired registered nurse and former director of nursing at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. She was a graduate of Shelby Hospital School of Nursing, and she furthered her studies at the University of Virgina. She was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church.
She was preceeded in death by her husband, Dr. E.V. Moore.
She is survived by one son, Dr. Holland Victor Moore and his wife, Jane, of Augusta, Ga., and two grandchildren, John Holland Moore and Emily Elizabeth Moore of Augusta.
The funeral will Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with Dr. Carroll Page officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends for an hour before the service at the funeral home.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Aneita Montgomery Champion, 50, of 2048 Pleasant Grove Church Road, Shelby, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Boyd Montgomery and Mildred McGinnis Ledford. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Kings Mountain.
She is survived by her husband, Allen Champion of Cherryville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Amy Sanders of Casar and Shannon and Anna Sanders of Earl; a brother, Robby Montgomery and his wife, Wanda, of Kings Mountain; a sister, Linda Clark of Shelby; four grandchildren, Aaron Sanders, Ryan Arrowood, Brook Arrowood and Chance Sanders; two nieces, Robin Carlton and Haley Montgomery; two great nieces, Brandy Carlton and Jessica Whitesides; and a great nephew, Tyrell Carlton.
A graveside service will be today at 4 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain.
Visitation will be today from 2 to 3:30 at the home of his brother, Robby Montgomery, 312 Maner Road, Kings Mountain.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Louise C. Kilber, 87, of White Oak Manor, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at her residence.

Bernice Hoffman
TAYLORSVILLE - Mrs. Bernice Dagenhart Hoffman, 76, of 539 Third St., died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Valley Nursing Center.
A native of Alexander County, she was the daughter of Jesse Leroy and Kello Bowman Dagenhart. She was a retired sander with Hickory Chair Co., and she was a member of Carpenters Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hoffman; two brothers, J.C. Dagenhart and Eugene Dagenhart; and two sisters, Thelma Dagenhart and Coleen Dagenhart.
She is survived by four brothers, Levi Dagenhart of Taylorsville and Hayes Dagenhart, Conley Dagenhart and Henkle Dagenhart, all of Conover.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Welch officiating. Burial will follow in the Carpenters Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends an hour before the service and at other times at the home of Hayes and Arcola Dagenhart, 5842 St. Peter's Church Road, Conover.
Miles Baker
SHELBY - Mr. Miles Baker, 88, of White Oak Manor, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at his residence.
A native of Cleveland County, he was retired from Neisler Yarn Mills Division of Massachusetts Mohair Plush Co., where he was manager of four mills and a sales manager. He was a member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church, where he served as leader of the Methodist Youth Fellowship and as a Sunday school teacher. He was a Scout leader for 15 years and a member of the Masons and Shriners for 50 years. He served the city of Shelby for 24 years as a councilman and was appointed to the U.S. Department of Commerce Regional Export Expansion Council.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Crawford and Arzie Lankford Baker; a daughter, Janet Gayle Baker Ferris; a granddaughter, Tracy Elaine Johnson, and three brothers, Onnie Baker, Bud Baker and Junior Baker.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Laura Baker of the home; a daughter, Amanda B. Johnson of Sarasota, Fla.; two grandsons and their wives, Charles A. Jr. and Beth Johnson of Atlanta and David Ted and Lisa Johnson of Sarasota; two granddaughters, April Falk of Sarasota and Carrie Ann Kale and her husband, Greg, of Boone; a great-granddaughter, Katherine Elise Kale of Boone; two sisters, Elizabeth Yelton and Ossie Mae Gantt; and a brother-in-law, Clyde Lee Williams of Shelby.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Lafayette Street Methodist Church with the Rev. Gervase Hitch officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Mattie Earl Moore Neal, 93, of White Oak Manor, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Capps Memorial Missionary Methodist Church with the Revs. Bobby Holtsclaw, Kelley Jones and Jerry Lail officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Cherryville.

James Leftwich
SHELBY - Mr. James Columbus Leftwich, 83, of White Oak Manor, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Carroll County, Va., he was the son of the late Rebecca Bolen and the Rev. Marcus Edward Leftwich. He served in the Air Force for 20 years and was a member of First Baptist Church in Shelby.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Gladys (Judy) Blanton Leftwich.
He is survived by his sisters, Mrs. Jean Hamrick of Charlotte and Mrs. Addie Clark of Mount Holly, and two nieces, Mrs. Jean Childers of Belmont and Mrs. Rebecca Van Dyke of Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service.

William Wright Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. William A. "Bill" Wright Jr., 60, of 716 Liveoak St., died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at his home.
A native of Washington, D.C., he was the son of William A. Wright Sr. of the home and the late Parlee Liptrap Wright. He was a retired civilian clerk for the Navy. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Shelby.
In addition to his father, he is survived by one sister, Teresa Round of Lawndale.
The funeral will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Glencarlin Road Baptist Church with the Rev. Gregory Loewer officiating. Burial will be at National Memorial Park in Falls Church, Va.

A native of Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of the late William Leroy and Mary Rebecca Anthony Campbell. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn Johnson of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Glenn Jr. and Lisa Johnson of Shelby; one daughter and one son-in-law, Rhonda and James Alley Jr. of Polkville; one niece, Stacy Campbell of Shelby; and nine grandchildren, Alicia Keeter, Ricky Keeter, Emily Johnson, Christina Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Hannah Alley, Faith Alley, William Campbell and Brittany Campbell.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at House of Prayer with the Revs. Doug James and Robert Mote officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

SHELBY - Mrs. Amanda Posey "Sandy" Hoey, 93, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Union County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Martha Posey Jennings. She was a member of Eskridge Grove Baptist for more than 70 years, where she was a former member of the Spiritual Choir and the Mary Wilson Missionary Group.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, John "Buddah" Hoey; three sons, J.B. Hoey, Clyde Hoey and C.J. Hoey; and three sisters; and four brothers.
She is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Marnita Hoey of the home and Selma Brewton and Ethel H. and Ben Dawkins, all of Shelby; five sons and seven daughters-in-law, Earl Hoey of Charlotte, Arthur and Eva Hoey, Anthony and Christine Hoey, John Emmitt and Maeola Hoey, Helen Hoey, Mary Hoey and Sarah Hoey, all of Shelby, and James and Margaret Hoey of Lattimore; two sisters-in-law, Maggie Jennings of Shelby and Lizzie Tate of Gaffney, S.C.; 40 grandchildren; 80 great-grandchildren; 35 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Eskridge Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Strickland Maddox and F.R. Giles officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
