Thomas "B" Smith Sr.
SHELBY - Mr. Thomas B. "B" Smith Sr., 78, of 271 J.E. Randall Road, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born on January 20, 1921, the son of the late David Jackson and Rachel Ledford Smith. He was retired from Doran Mills Buffalo Plant. He was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church where he served as a lay person. He was an Army veteran who served in World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Retha Carter Smith; one granddaughter, Jaclyn M. Smith; five brothers, Guy Smith, Clyde Smith, David Smith Jr., Fred Smith and Donald Smith; and five sisters, Cynthia Emory, Goldie Wright, Mae Brady, Hattie Smith and Zulie Hipps.
He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Linda Smith, Carter and Judy Smith, Marshall and Cynthia Smith and Derrell and Amy Smith, all of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Robert Glover and Kathy and Steve Simpson, all of Shelby; one brother, Hubert Smith of Lawndale; one sister, Blanche Maida of Kings Mountain; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the chapel at Stamey Funeral Home with the Revs. Bill Lee and Bill Pheagin officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at the funeral home and other times at the home of Robert and Judy Glover, 358 Crow Road, Shelby.
Memorials may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church Children's Fund, 110 Pine Grove Church Road, Shelby, N.C. 28152.

Mary "Willie" Bridges
SHELBY - Mrs. Mary "Willie" Marie Campbell Mathis Bridges, 81, of 3756 W. Dixon Blvd., died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at her residence.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late George and Sarah Fortenberry Campbell. She was retired from Shelby Convalescent where she worked as a CNA. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Arthur Mathis Sr.; one son, Arthur Mathis Jr.; one daughter, Anderson Davis; one granddaughter, Wanda Davis; one grandson, Michael Davis; one son-in-law, Earl Davis; one sister, Hazel Foster; and five brothers, Guy Campbell, Everette Campbell, Dave Campbell, John Campbell and Grady Campbell.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Mary Mathis of Ellenboro; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joann Davis and Billy Davis, both of Lattimore, and Martha and John Fredell of Shelby; eight grandchildren, Bobby Mathis, Barbara and Freddie Bryant and Anita and Don Ledford, all of Boiling Springs; Danny and Susan Davis of Toluca; Lisa and Randy Cogdell, Ricky Davis, Shenan and Andrew McSwain and John Fredell Jr. and his fiancee Brandy Cogdell, all of Lattimore; and eight great-grandchildren, Barry Bryant of Boiling Springs; Danny Ross Davis of Toluca; Mindy Cogdell, Daniel Davis, Melania Cogdell, Tyler Fredell McSwain and Catelyn McSwain, all of Lattimore; and Tyler Petty.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church with the Revs. Terry Cagle and David A. Jones and Mr. Walter Mathis and Mr. Andrew McSwain officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The body will be taken to the home of Martha and John Fredell in Shelby today at 2 p.m. for viewing.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 3756 W. Dixon Blvd., Shelby.
Cleveland Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Carrie Mae Canipe
SHELBY - Ms. Carrie Mae Whitaker Canipe, 98, of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.

SHELBY - Mr. Ernest H. Scruggs, 72, of 2009 Maple Springs Church Road, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

George Williams
SHELBY - Mr. George Williams, 83, of 1712 Wendover Drive, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Century Care of Shelby.

Mary Louise Howard
MOORESBORO - Mrs. Mary Louise Howard, 82, of 3557 Campfield Church Road, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at Rutherford Hospital.
A native of Manti, Utah, she was the daughter of the late Louis Earl and Bertha Hazel Dawson Christensen. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She authored the book "Myth of Evolution."
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Leroy Thomas, and two sons, John Sherwood Thomas and Julius Bernard "Bernie" Thomas.
She is survived by her husband, Elmo Cleveland Howard of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Sandra "Sandy" Longley Thomas of the home; two sisters, Myrna Redd of Logan, Utah, and Vonda Porter of Sunnyvale, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services and other times at the residence.

Elizabeth Allen
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Mrs. Elizabeth Moody Allen, 91, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1999, at her residence.
A native of Waynesville, she was the daughter of the late Charles Rector and Elizabeth Liner Moody. She graduated from Western Carolina University. She retired from the High Point City Schools in 1972 after 30 years of teaching. She was a member of Emerywood Baptist Church where she was a life Deacon. She was married on August 15, 1931.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W. Lawson Allen, who died on June 1, 1991.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Louise A. and Jim Blackwelder and Billie A. and Don Brewer; one sister, Evelyn McHan; three grandchildren, Jodi B. Stegall and her husband, Chris, Don Brewer Jr. and Tyler Brewer; one adopted grandson, Danny Gray; one great-grandchild, Samantha Stegall; many nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be today at 2 p.m. at Emerywood Baptist Church with Dr. James E. Baucom officiating. Burial will follow Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Greenhill Cemetery in Waynesville.
The family will receive friends at the church after the service.

Larry Petri
SHELBY - Mr. Larry Lee Petri, 35, of 2948 Old Cliffside Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999.
A native of Gary, Ind., he was the son of Vivian Stokes Petri of Gary and the late William Lester Petri. He was a supervisor at Plastic Oddities.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dennis Petri.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Michelle Hoppes of the home; one son, Jason Lee Petri of the home; one daughter, Nikcole Michelle Petri of the home; six brothers and one sister-in-law, Allen Petri of South Haven, Ind., Billy Petri of Michigan City, Ind., Ronnie Petri, Jerry Petri and Rick Petri, all of Gary, Ind., and Mark and Kelly Petri of Lake Village, Ind.; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Sharon and Andy Hunter of Lake Station, Ind., and Grace and Mike Iwan of Gary, Ind., three sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law, Jean Petri and Richard Hopple of Cherryville, Jackie and Johnny McDaniel of Lattimore, Jennifer and Kevin Bishop and Frank Hoppes Jr., all of Shelby; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Carolyn and Frank Hoppes of Boiling Springs; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the chapel at Cleveland Funeral Services. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.

Helen Childers
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Helen Skinner Childers, 88, of Eden Gardens, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late James W. and Eula Simpson Skinner. She was a charter member of Temple Baptist Church. She was an honorary charter member of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary of Kings Mountain Hospital. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W.A. Childers.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James A. "Jim" and Pat Childers and William H. "Bill" and Jeanette Childers, all of Kings Mountain; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Solan Moss, Helen and Don McAbee and Mary and Gary Hambright, all of Kings Mountain; one brother, Kenneth Skinner of Gaffney, S.C.; two sisters, Betty Clary of Gaffney, S.C., and Emma Rhinehart of Merritt Island, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Haynes officiating. Entombment will follow at Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home and other times at the home of the son, James Childers, 206 Maner Road, Kings Mountain.

Carrie Canipe
SHELBY - Mrs. Carrie Mae Whitaker Canipe, 98, of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, formerly of Rt. 1, Ellenboro, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Johnathan and Ida Mae Blanton Whitaker. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Big Springs Baptist Church where she was a former choir member. She is a former member of the Home Extension Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bert Canipe; two sons, Raymond Canipe and Charles Canipe; and one brother, Charles Whitaker.
She is survived by two sons and four daughters-in-law, Walter and Estelle Canipe and John and Jean Canipe, all of Shelby, Evelyn Canipe of Ellenboro and Helen Canipe of Raleigh; one daughter and son-in-law, Mae Dean and Howard Smith of Shelby; two sisters, Velma Hampton of Spindale and Gussie Bolton of Kings Mountain; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2:00 at Big Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. H. Lawton Neely and Phil Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Walter "Bud" Collier
ELLENBORO - Mr. Walter Earl "Bud" Collier, 56, of 230 Seaboard Road, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Trenton, N.J., he was the son of Katie Lou Greene Collier of Ellenboro and the late John Earl Collier. He was a truck driver for Conway Southern Express. He was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church where he was a deacon.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Carol McCann Collier; two sons, Bud Collier Jr. of Bostic and Bryan Collier of Ellenboro; two daughters, Lisa Collier and Shelley Collier, both of Ellenboro; two brothers, Kevin Collier of Ellenboro and Steve Collier of Union, N.J.; two sisters, Liz "Sis" Blanton of Ellenboro and Joyce Collier of Union, N.J.; one grandson, Patrick Caleb Collier of Ellenboro; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church with the Revs. Paul White Jr. and Tom Elkins and Dr. Robert Toney officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
