RUTHERFORDTON - Mrs. Ida Mae Culbertson Hartsell, 90, of Tipton's Home Care No. 4, formerly of Missouri Street, Spindale, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Willow Ridge Nursing Center.
The funeral will be Monday at 4 p.m. at Crowe's Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Forest City with the Revs. Mike Dawson and Brent Barker officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
Monnie Stewart
MORGANTON - Mrs. Monnie Waters Brackett Stewart, 85, of 2285 Arthur Stewart Dr., died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Grace Hospital.
Born on September 13, 1915, in Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Laura Turner and Robert Cohen Waters. She was retired from Broughton Hospital after working in the dietary Department for 22 years. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She was a resident of Burke County for 29 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Carmie Brackett, and two sisters, Willa Dean Waters Maddox and Dessie Melton Stewart.
She is survived by her hsuband, Arthur L. Stewart Sr. of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol Brackett and Larry Bottoms of Casar; a son and daughter-in-law, Mitchell and Kathryn Brackett of Morganton; a stepdaughter and her husband, Theola Stewart and Bobby L. Hall of Morganton; four stepsons and their wives, Jerry D. Stewart of Morganton, Lt. Col. Arthur L. "Lee" Jr. and Barbara Stewart, J. Kenneth and Edna Stewart of Savannah, Ga., and David A. and Carol Stewart of Fayetteville; three sisters, Vene Waters Warlick of Casar, Clara Waters Hefner of Conover and Sue Waters Johnson of Hickory; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert H. and Bess Waters of Casar, Bill and Thetis Waters of St. Augustine, Fla., Charles and Marilyn Waters of Drexel, Dewitt and Doris Water, James F. and Nancy Waters and Jessie G. and Pat Waters, all of Hickory; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Larry Cline and the Rev. Richard Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at
Casar United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Sossoman Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral.

BLACKSBURG, S.C. - Mr. Bennie Gail Whelchel Martin, 59, of 414 N. Mountain St., died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

Nelle Surratt
SHELBY - Mrs. Nelle Greene Surratt, 86, of Century Care of Shelby, formerly of Boiling Springs, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Emma Moore Greene. She was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church. She retired from The Snack Shop Family Restaurant in Boiling Springs.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray W. Surratt; two brothers, Hub Greene and G.C. Greene; and one sister, O.Z. Davis.
She is survived by two daughters, Bobby Frye and Martha Surratt, both of Boiling Springs; two grandchildren, Julie Saine and Lisa Gudgalis; and four great-grandchildren, Jessica Saine, Aaron Saine, McKenzie Gudgalis and Megan Gudgalis.
The funeral will be tonight at 7:15 at Boiling Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Dixon and Dr. Carroll Page officiating. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5:30 to 7 in the fellowship hall of Boiling Springs Baptist Church.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Hilda Tedder Greene, 49, of 104 Abby Way, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Cherokee, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Roy A. and Elizabeth Bryant Tedder. She was a 1970 graduate of Kings Mountain High School. She was employed for 13 years in the claims department of Wal-Mart in Shelby. She was a member of Landmark Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and had served on several committees. She was a former Girl Scout leader and a volunteer with the Children's Miracle Network.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert David Tedder.
She is survived by one son, Nicholas Brian Greene of North Carolina State University in Raleigh; one daughter and son-in-law, Christine Marie and Keith Costner of Shelby; one brother, Malcolm Eugene Tedder of Kings Mountain; one sister, Libby Wallace of Shelby; one grandchild, Logan Keith Costner; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Landmark Baptist Church with the Rev. Allen Davis officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service.

LENOIR - Mrs. Jesse Evelyn Broyhill Greer, 76, of Maehill Place, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at her home.
Born Nov. 12, 1924, in Wilkes County, she was the daughter of the late Issac Jefferson and Ada Bell Carlton Broyhill. She was a retired schoolteacher. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lenoir and a member of the Samaritan Sunday School class. She was a sister of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, Omicron Chapter. She taught 36 years in the Caldwell County Schools.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Greer.
She is survived by one son, Larry F. Greer of Shelby; one daughter, Frances G. Malcolm of Lenoir; two brothers, Lloyd Broyhill of Boomer and Vernon Broyhill of Taylorsville; two sisters, Arlee B. Andrews of Boomer and Naomi B. Triplett of Wilkesboro; and three grandchildren.
The funeral was Sunday at First Baptist Church of Lenoir with Dr. David Smith officiating. Burial was in Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

VALE - Mr. Johnny Edward Norman, 49, of 3627 Rhoney Farm Road, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Born Nov. 29, 1951, in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Clifford Auton and Della Ann Anthony Norman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Norman.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Caudle Norman of the home; four sons, Johnny 'Ed' Norman Jr. and Jimmy Ledford, both of Vale, Tim Ledford of Lincolnton and Tony Ledford of George Hildebran; two brothers, Tom Norman of Plateau and Roy Norman of Lincolnton; one sister, Rachel Cline of Vale; and five grandchildren, Della M'Caylynn Norman, Brittany Ledford, Brandon Ledford, Matthew Ledford and Allison Ledford.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Bass-Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Doub officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
Scott Cline, Mike Cline, Derrick Stallings, Keith Whitson, Anthony Cline, Brian Walker, Rusty Brendle and Tracy Wilson will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers are Brandon Norman, Jason Norman, Robbie Norman, Mickey Smith and William Smith.

A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Zeb Vance Sr. and Ollie Mae Jarrett Blanton. He was a retired salesman of A.V. Wray & 6 sons. He was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Houser Blanton; five brothers, Zeb Blanton Jr., Glenn Blanton, Charles Blanton, Carl Blanton and Dan Blanton; and four sisters, Beuna Hamrick, Ethel McMurry, Louise Hamrick and Thelma Blanton.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Lee and Pete Meyerson of Woodbury, Minn.; a brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Flo Blanton of Shelby; a sister, Beatrice Beam of Shelby; two grandsons, Robert Meyerson of Dayton, Ohio, and Charlie Meyerson of St. Paul, Minn.; six sisters-in-law, Joyce Blanton of Orangeburg, S.C., Aryls Blanton of Tulsa, Okla., Susie Blanton of Shelby, Frances H. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Sharon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robin Kingston officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Albert Leroy Williams, 57, of 405 Gantt St., died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
Born March 15, 1943, he was the son of Ardata Williams Sweat. He was a veteran of the Army. He was a member of Good Hope Presbyterian Church, where he served on the board of trustees. He was a supervisor for Firestone in Gastonia for many years.
In addition to his mother, he was survived by a brother, Nathaniel L. Sweat; a daughter, Bridgitt Adams; two sons, Alan Williams and Dennis McGill; three grandchildren; two nieces, Shreasia Sweat and Denesha Sweat; one great-niece, Angellica Sweat; one great-nephew, Ja'Quanous Sweat; a former wife, Helen Williams; special friends, Walt Jordan, Nancy Bell, and Billy Byers; and several relatives.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Good Hope Presbyterian Church with the Rev. State Alexander officiating. Burial will be at Mountain Rest Cemetery.

A native of McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Dollie Elliott Bryant. She was a homemaker and a member of Temple Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert W. Blanton; a daughter, Lavonda B. Powell; a stepson, Jim "Bones" Blanton; two brothers, Don Bryant and Devanny Bryant; and a sister, Stella Bingham.
She is survived by a daughter, Gail Laney of Boiling Springs; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Pat Blanton of Shelby and Carroll and Mildred Blanton of Shelby; one stepson and his wife, Bill and Elaine Blanton of Shelby; one stepdaughter, Alice Faye Hager of Shelby; a daughter-in-law, Dora Blanton of Shelby; a sister, Betty B. Born Aug. 26, 1919, in Hutchinson, Kan., she was the daughter of the late T. Bright and Helen Gardner Carrick. She was a retired operator from Southern Bell and was a member of Kilgo United Methodist Church in Charlotte.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gibbs Rector McSwain.
She is survived by a son, Tom McSwain of Shelby; a sister and a brother-in-law, Carolyn and Bill Willis of Shelby; and a niece, Julia Willis of Quincy, Mass.

A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was the son of the late Albert Leslie and Effie Mullanax Parker. He worked at Dicey Fabrics, where he was a supervisor.
He is survived by a girlfriend, Susan Blanton of Ellenboro; two stepdaughters, Becky Gaffney Bumgardner of Gaffney, S.C., and Sharon Dobbins of Spindale; a stepson, Rick Blanton of Caroleen; a brother, James Robert "Buster" Parker of Blacksburg, S.C.; a sister, Thelma P. Thomas of Gaffney; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel with the Revs. Cecil Lovelace and M.P. Hampton officiating.
