Melton Kiser
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Melton Kiser, 89, of 108 Cleveland Ave., died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late William Wesley and Hennretta White Kiser. He retired as owner of Silver Villa in Kings Mountain.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Royce Kiser.
He is survived by his wife, Janet King Kiser of Kings Mountain; a son, Horace Kiser of Mocksville; a daughter and son - in - law, Amelia and Dan Whitesides of Shelby; two brothers, Wesley Kiser and Fred Kiser, both of Kings Mountain; special friends, Gail Garrett, Jack Stringfellow and Larry Stringfellow; nine grandchildren; nine great - grandchildren and four great - great - grandchildren.
The graveside service is today at 3 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery, with Dr. Paul Sorrells officiating.
The family will receive friends at Harris Funeral Home from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. before the service.

Duck Short
HENRIETTA - Mr. Donald Thomas "Duck" Short, 64, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
Born in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Pearlie Short Whisnant and widower of the late Peggy James Short. He was a Navy veteran and retired from PPG Industries.
He is survived by a brother and sister - in - law, Gerald and Diane Short of Henrietta; two stepdaughters, Sheila Jolley of Denver and Sylvia Bostic of Polkville; his fiancée, Ann Lovelace of Harris; a niece, Tanya Walker, and great - niece, Shala Walker, both of Henrietta.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Harris Baptist Church, with the Rev. George Whitmire officiating. Pallbearers will be Rex Shehan, Larry Arrowood, Jeffery Arrowood, Junior Arrowood, Wayne Jones, Danny McCraw and Jeff Frazier.
Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 to 9 at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen.
Sarah Dixon
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Sarah Robbins Dixon, 57, of 804 Borders Road, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Hospice of Wendover in Shelby.
A native of Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late Buford Adam and Annie Laura Troutman Robbins. She was a member of First Baptist Church and a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Stevan Newall Robbins.
She is survived by her husband, Mike Dixon Sr. of Shelby; a son, Mike Dixon Jr. of Gastonia; a grandson, James Michael Dixon III; three brothers, Ray Robbins of Union, S.C., David Robbins of Cheraw, S.C., and Adam Robbins of Lincolnton; and a sister, Marguerite Phillips of Clover, S.C.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday night at 7 at First Baptist Church Webb Chapel in Shelby, with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Ladies Parlor of the church.

Lucile Hughes
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Lucile Gaston Hughes, 94, formerly of Arlington Street, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at White Oak Manor Nursing Center, where she was a resident.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Forest City. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Tuesday in the church parlor one hour before the service.

Ralph Rains
THOMASVILLE - Mr. Ralph Leslie Rains, 75, of 327 N. Highway 109, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at his home.
Born July 18, 1925, in Davidson County, he was a son of the late Albert Leslie and Eula Ward Rains. He graduated with honors from High Point College and was an Army tank commander during World War II. He was vice president of Hall Printing in High Point. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and the R.L. Pope Bible Class. He belonged to the Thomasville Lion's Club, with a 48 - year perfect attendance record. He married Lorene Veach Rains on Aug. 30, 1947. She preceded him in death on Aug. 8, 1994. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul Rains.
Survivors include a daughter and son - in - law, Becky and Steve Hill of Shelby; a son and daughter - in - law, Scott L. and Judy Rains of Trinity; two grandchildren, Mrs. Thomas (Kristin) Hill Fletcher of Rock Hill, S.C., and Jonathan Wesley Hill of Raleigh.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville, with Dr. Kyles Y. Wallace and the Rev. Wilbur Jarrett officiating. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.

SHELBY - Mr. Robert Lee Hamrick, 65, of 2612 W. Dixon Blvd., died Friday, March 30, 2001, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Graham Washburn Sr. and Rosie Lee Thomas Hamrick.
He was a retired automobile dealer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Graham Hamrick Jr.; one stepgrandson, David Dain; one daughter, Martha Hamrick; and one son, Harold Dean Hamrick.
He is survived by three sons and daughters - in - law, Ricky and Sandy Hamrick and Buren and Beth Hamrick, all of Shelby; and Robert and Stella Hamrick of Marion; two stepsons, Ricky Messick and Keith Messick, both of Shelby; seven sisters and six brothers - in - law, Faye H. and Cletus Mullinax of Gaffney, S.C., Louise H. and Arnold Wray of Earl, Bessie H. and Bill Goins of Cherryville, Margaret H. and James Martin and Ellen H. Quinn, all of Rock Hill, S.C., Hildred H. and Bob Elliott of Polkville and Mildred H. and Rodney Williams of Charlotte; one brother and one sister - in - law, Arthur and Carolyn Hamrick of Polkville; seven grandchildren, Nicole Hamrick, Michelle Hamrick, Sherry McSwain and her husband, Todd, Kelly Hamrick, Travis Hamrick, Brad Hamrick and Bonnie Hamrick; three stepgrandchildren, Daniel Dain, Joseph Dain and Angel Poston; and one great - grandchild.

Willie J. Marable
FORT WASHINGTON, Md. - Mrs. Willie J. Marable died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Fort Washington Hospital.
She is survived by two daughters and one son - in - law, Barbara Marable and Sonja Marable - Robertson and Lawrence D. Robertson, all of Washington; one granddaughter, Yasmin J. Marable of Washington; three sisters and three brothers - in - law; and three brothers and four sisters - in - law; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ at 206 Sparrow Springs Road in Kings Mountain, with Dr. H. Lynn McDowell officiating.
The family will receive friends an hour before the funeral and at other times at the Holiday Inn Express at 100 Woodlake Parkway in Kings Mountain.

John Raymer
CINCINNATI - Mr. John Ashburn Raymer, 49, of the Hyde Park neighborhood, died Monday, March 26, 2001.
He was the son of Virginia J. Raymer and the late Dr. Jack L. Raymer.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Julia S. Lamb; and two aunts, Sarah Jenkins and Rachel Wilkerson.
He is survived by his wife, Gisele Loriot - Raymer; a daughter, Nathalie Raymer; a son, Jack Raymer; four sisters, Mary Burton Stamey, JoAnna McMurray, Lily Davenport and Margaret Davenport; three aunts, Peggy Ann Raymer, Ruth Raymer and Henrietta Raymer; a nephew, Scott Cottrell; his mother - in - law, Suzanne Loriot; in - laws, Bill Lamb, Genevieve and Remy Duqre, Gigi Loriot and Georges Loriot; a life - long friend, Victor McCord; and his cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Church in Hyde Park. Private burial will be Tuesday at Spring Grove Cemetery.

Dick Lackey Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. Norris Dixon "Dick" Lackey Jr., 68, of Patton Drive, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Norris Dixon Sr. and Louise Baley Lackey. He was a retired attorney who founded Lackey & Lackey Attorneys at Law. He retired from the business after 35 years. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1954 and the university's Law School in 1957. He served on the State Bar council for many years. He was a first lieutenant in the Army JAG Corps.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lou Hawley Lackey, and a sister, Elizabeth "Betsy" Lackey Williams.
He is survived by four sons and two daughters - in - law, Mark D. Lackey and Seth N. and Jennifer Lackey, all of Shelby, Miles M. Lackey of Washington and Kevin S. and Penny Lackey of Atlanta; a sister and brother - in - law, Lea Lackey - Zachmann and Timothy Zachmann of Winston - Salem; two grandchildren, Davis Lackey and Harris Lackey; and two nephews, Timothy Williams and Jonathan Williams.

LINCOLNTON - Mr. A.C. "Buddy" Parker, 70, of 917 East Catawba St., died Saturday, March 31, 2001.
Born June 9, 1930, in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Leo Worth "Bill" and Bessie Mae Hamrick Parker. He was an auto repairman for Withers Body Shop.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maebell Capps Parker.
He is survived by four sons, Ricky Parker and Tony Parker, both of Lincolnton, Dennis Parker of Gastonia and A.C. Parker Jr. of Kings Mountain; one daughter, Linda Parker Elliot of Catawba; two brothers, Clyde Parker of Shelby and Billy Parker of Polkville; five sisters, Beatrice Greene, Barbara Black and Shirley Edwards, all of Shelby, Jane Snipes of Fallston and Mary Rogers of Boiling Springs; eight grandchildren; and one great - grandchild.

Born Sept, 13, 1953, in Cleveland County, he was the son of Dr. Wallace Reid Carpenter Sr. of Rutherfordton and the late Dr. Betty McClure Carpenter. He was M.I.S. Director for Carmack Precision Cast Motors in Duncan, S.C. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his father - in - law, Benny Hamrick.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Sandy Hamrick Carpenter of the home; a daughter, Laura Elizabeth Carpenter of the home; a son, Wallace Reid Carpenter III of Boiling Springs; three nieces, Mary Lauren Marchman of Los Angeles and Allison Oates and Mary Oates, both of Rutherfordton; two sisters - in - law, Sharon Moran of Portsmouth, Va., and Candice Oates of Rutherfordton; a brother - in - law, Steve Oates of Rutherfordton; a mother - in - law, Frances Roberts of Forest City; and a father - in - law, Falsom Roberts of Forest City.
