Nellie Smith
GROVER - Mrs. Nellie Camp Smith, 80, of 706 Cleveland Ave., died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Nathan A. and Iva Lee Bolin Camp. She was a winder at Minette Mills in Grover and at Park Yarn in Kings Mountain. She was a charter member of Bethany Baptist Church in Grover.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Smith Jr.
She is survived by a daughter and son - in - law, Phyllis Smith and Lane Dixon of Grover, and a number of nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held at Grover Cemetery, with J.D. Martin officiating.
The family will receive friends at "Grandma's House," 706 Cleveland Ave., Grover, tonight from 6 to 8.

Mary Tate
GROVER - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Tate, 81, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Northeast Medical Center in Concord.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Black Tate. She was a longtime member of Long Branch Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Lola Faye Moore Jones Lurch of Concord; three grandchildren, Charlotte Lurch of Bronx, N.Y., Michael Jones of Shelby and Victor Lurch of Kings Mountain; one sister, Mary Lockhart of Shelby; and a nephew, Travis Tate of Brentwood, N.Y.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Long Branch Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Dixon officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday at the church one hour before the service.

RUTHERFORDTON - Mrs. Hazel Harris Barnes, 73, of 179 Riceville Road, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Seacoast Medical Center in Little River, S.C.
She was a native of Rutherford County, a daughter of the late Willard and Janie Pearl Fox Harris. She retired from Cone Mills, Cliffside Plant. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Barnes.
She is survived by three daughters, Sandra Robbins of Forest City, Sara Spence of Rutherfordton and Susie Overwyk of Hickory; one brother, Jesse Harris of Mooresboro; eight grandchildren and four great - grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael Sepaugh officiating. Burial will be in Cliffside Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday at the church one hour before the service.

James Bridges
BOILING SPRINGS - Mr. James Irvin Bridges, 79, of 115 Woodhill Drive, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Morris and Lallage Brooks Bridges. He served with the Army in World War II in the European Theatre, earning four bronze stars. He retired as a dye house operator with Gaffney (S.C.) Manufacturing and Mauney Hosiery in Kings Mountain. He was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Millis Bridges and Perry Bridges, and two grandsons, Kirk Champion and Johnny Michael Barrett Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Green Bridges of the home; three sons and daughters - in - law, Thomas "Gene" and Marjorie Bridges and Larry and Wanda Bridges of Shelby and Brutus and Wanda Bridges of Boiling Springs; four daughters and sons - in - law, Linda Bridges and Johnny Barrett of Boiling Springs, Barbara Bridges and Alan Moxey of Snellville, Ga., Suzi Bridges and Marcus Martin of Lattimore and Denita and Derek Shaw of Bostic; two brothers, Kenneth Bridges of Mooresboro and Herman Bridges of Boiling Springs; four sisters, Aileen Crowe and Mary Lou Daves of Boiling Springs and Nora Greene and Martha Beason of Mooresboro; grandchildren, Brad Bridges and his fiancée, Amy Gregory, Chad and Keisha Bridges, Christie Barrett, Troy Barrett, Jennifer Barrett and her fiancé, Robert Francis, Kiley Champion, Mandy Bridges, Justin Bridges, Ashley Bridges, Michael Bridges, Melissa Bridges, Benjamin Martin, Katy Martin, Lee Bradley, Matt Bradley, Serena Bradley, Jancy Owens, Christie Hoyle, Barbara and Jason Townsend and Tiffany Hager; and five great - grandchildren, Macey Bridges, Shalyn Bradley, Desiree Hoyle, Caleb Owens and Hannah Owens.

SPINDALE - Ms. Rita Shelia Renee Whitesides, 35, of 904 Apartment D Ledbetter Road, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
A native of Rutherford County, she is survived by her father and stepmother, of Elijah and Jackie Whitesides and was the daughter of the late Reccie Byod Whitesides. A member of New Bethel Independent Church, she sang in the Bethelaries Mass Choir as an alto.
In addition to her father, she is survived by four brothers and a sister - in - law, Christopher Whitesides of Forest City, Columbus and Patsy Whitesides of Lake Lure and Victor Whitesides and Jousha Whitesides, both of Spindale; four sisters and two brothers - in - law, Shannon Whitesides of Bronx, N.Y., Karen Whitesides of Spindale, Debbie W. and Kevin Watkins of Forest City and Tina L. and Anthony Carson; and a grandmother, Lucillie Allen of Spindale.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at St. Paul AME Zion Church with the Rev. Paul Whiteside officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

LAKELAND, Fla. - Mr. Edward 'Ed' David Hawkins, 51, of 1515 King Ave., died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at the University Community Hospital in Tampa, Fla.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late James Boyd and Ida Maude Haney Hawkins. He was a route salesman for Standard Coffee Co.
He is survived by his wife, June Adams Hawkins of the home; one daughter, Shannon Hawkins of the home; one grandson, Draydan of the home; two brothers, Greg Hawkins of Cliffside and Bernie Hawkins of Forest City; a stepmother, Carrie Blanton Hawkins of Caroleen.

CASHIERS - Mr. Don B. Putnam, 64, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
A native of Shelby, he was the son of the late Spurgeon Britton and Maggie Lee Bridges Putnam. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was employed with Umeta Corp. of America, where he was a member of Society of Automotive Engineers. He was a member of Fallston Masonic Lodge No. 356, the 32nd Degree Scottish Rites and the Oasis Shrine Club. He was also active with the VFW in Glenville, the Department of Transportation Committee for Jackson County and Angel Flight.
He is survived by two daughters, Debbie Davidson of Florence, S.C., and Donna London of Jacksonville, Fla.; three brothers, Bobby Putnam, Bill Putnam and Gary Putnam, all of Shelby; and three grandchildren, Kirsten London, Tyler Davidson and Corey Davidson.

Hazel Brackett
DREXEL - Mrs. Hazel Hodge Brackett, 81, of Williams Road, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Hospice Shytle House in Valdese.
Born Oct. 19, 1919, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Vernie Mae Jolly Hodge. She began work at Broughton Hospital in 1950, where she later retired. She was a member of Drexel Memorial Baptist Church and a volunteer for Burke United Christian Ministries.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Vera Lois Hodge, Elizabeth Nadine Hodge and Sara Eolian Hodge; one son - in - law, John Michael Cline; and one nephew, Wayne Nelson.
She is survived by her husband, James V. Brackett; two daughters and one son - in - law, Yvonne Cline and Janice B. and Will Courtney, all of Drexel; one sister, Helen Hodge Sebastian of York, S.C.; a grandson, Michael Dylan Cline of Drexel; and a niece, Linda Diane Nelson of Rock Hill, S.C.

Everett Spurling Jr.
BETHESDA, Md. - Mr. Everett Gordon Spurling Jr., 77, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at a hospice in Gaithersburg, Md.
A native of Fallston, he was a retired architect and construction specifications writer. He was an active member of Chevy Chase Baptist Church for more than 40 years. He graduated from Mars Hill College and N.C. State University. He served in World War II in the Army Corps of Engineers as an aerial photo - topographer and draftsman. He practiced architecture in North Carolina, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. He was honored as a Fellow in both the American Institute of Architects and the Construction Specifications Institute. He served as president of the local chapter of the CSI, helped develop automated master specifications, taught classes at Catholic University and Montgomery College. He lectured frequently for professional organizations and won the prestigious Honorary Member award from the national CSI.
He published many articles on construction specifications. As a consultant, he worked on many large projects in the Washington area, including Canal Square, the Intelsat Building, Montgomery Junior College, the renovation of the Executive Office Building, the National Building Museum, the Madison building of the Library of Congress, the Torpedo Factory Building 3, the Embassy of the USSR in the United States, the U.S. Tax Court and the Phillip Hart Senate Office building.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret D. Spurling; two sons and a daughter - in - law, David S. Spurling of Ellicott City, Md., and Norman K. and Nancy Tresp Spurling of Alexandria, Va.; one daughter, Diana L. Spurling of Washington; one brother and one sister - in - law, Carroll L. and Joyce Spurling of Pismo Beach, Calif.; one brother - in - law, William Duckworth and his wife, Mary, of Asheville; four nephews and one niece.
