The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Alan Sailors and Rusty Elliott officiating. Burial will follow at Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Shelby.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Mary Crump Slusher
MANASSAS, VA. - Mrs. Mary Crump Slusher, 69, of Manassas, Va., died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at her home.
A native of Macon, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Clarice Crump. She moved to Manassas in 1953. She was a member of Manassas Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Melvin H. "Pete" Slusher; one son and one daughter - in - law, Rick and Virginia Slusher of Manassas; two daughters and one son - in - law, Debra and Randy Dasher and Stephanie Slusher - Vale, all of Manassas; four sisters, Carolyn Reed of Milledgeville, Ga., Effie Jo Blizzard of Eatonton, Ga., Judy Franks of Shelby and Patsy Starley of Gray, Ga.; and four grandchildren, Jeremy Dasher, Jason Dasher, Alyssa Slusher and Greg Slusher; and one greatgrandson, Jarrid Dasher.
The funeral will be today at noon at Manassas Baptist Church with the Rev. Macon N. Pegram Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens.

SHELBY - Mr. Ernest Edward Panther, 70, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Century Care.
He was the son of the late Julius Columbus and Johnnie Black Panther.
He retired from Celanese as a machinist.
He is survived by his wife, Muriel Panther of Shelby; one son, Michael Ernest Panther of Harrisburg; one daughter and one son - in - law, Robin and Craig Ketner of Fort Mill, S.C.; and two grandsons, Brad Ketner and Kevin Ketner, both of Fort Mill.
The graveside service will be today at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park with the Rev. Dan Wallace officiating.

John Huss Sr.
LINCOLNTON - Mr. John "J.T." Theadore Huss Sr., 75, of 870 N.C. 27 West, died Sunday, May 20, 2001.
Born Dec. 3, 1925, in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Frank and Jessie Lackey Huss. He was a retired owner/operator of Exxon Service Stations and was a World War II Navy veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son and one sister, Alene Starr.
He is survived by his wife, Faye Huss of the home; four sons and four daughters - in - law, John T. Jr. and "Dodi" Huss of Jarrettsville, Md., Douglas F. and Gene Huss of Fort Mill, S.C., Gregg S. and Gwen Huss and Todd and "Laurie" Huss, all of Shelby, and Tommy Ray Sr. and Beverly Huss of Lincolnton; one stepdaughter, Brenda Knight of Catawba; eight grandchildren, Noah Huss, Sarah Huss, Jacob Huss, Christopher Huss, Eric Huss, Matt Huss, Tabatha Huss and Alex Huss; and one stepgrandson, Quinton Knight.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Warlick Funeral Home with the Revs. Gary Dittman and Larry Cooley officiating. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery.

Horace Johnson
MILWAUKEE - Mr. Horace Johnson, 70, of 601 N. 20 St., Apartment 301, formerly of Lawndale, died, Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Fredtert Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late John Henry and Sue Bell Johnson. He retired as a crane operator after 30 years. He was a former member of First Baptist Church in Lawndale. He served in the Army during the Korean War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Fred Johnson.
He is survived by one daughter, Anita Thomas of Atlanta; two sons, Harold Wayne Johnson and David Johnson, both from Hickory; two brothers, James Henry Johnson and Lee Arthur Johnson, both of Lawndale; three sisters, Mattie Bell Vinson, Lucy Ellen Vinson and Betty Ann Clark; and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Lawndale with the Rev. James L. Smith officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

ELLENBORO - Mr. Rodney James Brown, 55, of 176 Gunn Road, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at Mary Black Hospital in Spartanburg, S.C.
A native of Tasmania, Australia, he was the son of the late Samuel Neil Brown and Billie Nada Jane Greenwood of Tasmania, Australia.
He is survived by his wife, Joanna Padgett Brown of the home; a son, Philip Brown of Melbourne, Australia; a daughter, Rachel Rickards of Hobart, Australia; and a brother and sister - in - law, Robert and Susan Brown of Tasmania, Australia.
A memorial service will be held Thursday night at 7:30 at Ellenboro Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bill Troutman officiating.

A native of Manhattan Borough, N.Y., she was a retired sales lady of J.C. McNeely Co. where she worked for 20 years. She was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church.
She is preceeded in death by her parents Angelo and Amalia Masick Luvisa.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Early Hayes Duncan.
She is survived by her special friends and caregivers Lynn Carpenter and Betty Hedrick of Shelby.
A graveside service will be today at Cleveland Memorial Park at 2 p.m. with Dr. Luke Harkey officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.

SHELBY - Mrs. Eva Spikes Hoey, 64, of 2320 Mason St., died Wed., May 23, 2001, at Hospice of Wendover.
She was a native of Cleveland County and daughter of the late Henrietta Thurman Withrow.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Eula Kee Spikes and Mattie Mae Spikes; and a brother, Otis Kee Jr.
Survivors include her husband, Arthur Hoey; five children, Charles Key and his wife, Agnes, of Jackson, S.C., Linda Boykins and Lora Boykins of Queens, N.Y., Lamar Boykins and Patricia Boykins of Shelby; 11 grandchildren, one great - grandchild; two sisters, Sarah Spikes of Kingstown and Rosa Brown of Uniondale, N.Y.; six stepchildren; a brother, C.B. Boykins; nieces and nephews.

BOILING SPRINGS - Mrs. Irene "Rena" Elizabeth Beheler Spangler, 79, of 315 W. College Ave., died Wed., May 23, 2001, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
Born June 18, 1921, in Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Levi and Georgia Carter Beheler. She was a retired beautician from Modern Beauty Salon and member of Double Shoals Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hershal Eugene Spangler Sr.; a son, Hershal E. Spangler Jr., and a sister, Merrell B. McGinnis.
Survivors include three sons and daughters - in - law, Tim and Jane Spangler of Lincolnton, Steve and Martha Spangler and Dean and Debbie Spangler, all of Shelby; eight grandchildren and one great - grandchild.

Dr. John Smith
TOLEDO, Ohio - Dr. John Rodgers "Jon" Smith, 84, died Thursday, May 24, 2001.
Born in Tuskegee Institute, Ala., Smith was reared in Springfield, Ohio, where he attended grade and high schools. He returned to Alabama for college and graduated with honors in chemistry from Tuskegee Institute in 1937. Later he began his medical training at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., and earned his doctoral degree in 1944.
Dr. Smith began his career as a physician in Shelby. He also practiced in Richmond, Ind., before moving to Toledo. He had been a practicing physician in Toledo since 1966. His career spanned 47 years and he retired in 1992. He gave much of his time and talent to Cordelia Martin Health Center, where he served as medical director for many years.
During his life in Toledo, Smith was an active member of Third Baptist Church and Alpha Pi Psi Boule. He belonged to Omega Phi Psi Fraternity and served as the organization's long - term treasurer. He served on many local boards and committees, including the Advisory Board for Third Baptist Church, Lyman Liggins Senior Center and The Tennyson Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Woodford S. and Josie Smith, and a son, Dr. Jon A. Rashid of New York.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Greer Smith; a son, Dr. Craig S. Smith of Plymouth, Mich.; a daughter, Carol G. Smith of Stone Mountain, Ga.; a sister and brother - in - law, Woodia and Edward Pryce of Tuskegee Institute; six grandchildren, two great - grandchildren, two nephews, three nieces and a host of other family and close friends.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Third Baptist Church, with Dr. Langston C. Bannister officiating. Burial will be in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Dale Funeral Home Tuesday from 4 to 5 p.m., followed by a wake service from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Dale Chapel.
