Julius Smith
HICKORY - Mr. Julius Pinckney Smith, 88, of Daytona Beach, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at Halifax Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a retired agent from Equitable Life Insurance Co. He attended the University of Georgia, and was a member of Hickory Lions Club. He was an avid golfer and former member of the Lake Hickory Country Club. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, H. Dixion and Pearl Weathers Smith; his wife, Susan Elizabeth Chappel Smith; and two brothers, Ned Smith and Dixion Smith Jr.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan Chappell Smith Tarlton of Hickory; a sister, Pearl Smith Wells of Statesville; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral is Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, with the Revs. John Ferree and Thad Lineberger officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends following the service.

Jeanette Marable
SHELBY - Ms. Jeanette Banner Marable, 50, of 223 Lee St., died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
A native of Cleveland County, she was retired from White Oak Manor, where she was a nurse's aide. She was a member of Hopper's Chapel Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Maggie Watson Banner; and two brothers, Harry Banner Jr. and Nathaniel Banner.
She is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Barry Marable, Scott and Denise Marable, and Jimmy Marable, all of Shelby; a daughter, Tandra Marable of Shelby; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Boyce Watson, Elmer Banner, and Robert L. and Jeanette Banner of Shelby; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Shelly B. Wright, Mary B. and Bobby Marable, all of Shelby, and Dorothy B. Rhodes of Glen Alpine; and five grandchildren, Jeremy Marable, Antionette Marable, Laturie Marable, Tovarous Marable and Michael Marable.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Hopper's Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. A.A. Ponder officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends Monday for 30 minutes before the service at the church.

SHELBY - Mr. James Dean Myers of 1209 Maple Springs Church Road died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Jonnie Bridges
SHELBY - Mrs. Jonnie Bridges, 84, of 1362 Ellis Ferry Road, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at her residence.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Brantley and Lula Rollins Harris. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, where she served in the nursery for 40 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Bridges; two sisters, Nell Bailey and Clarice Crawley; and one brother, Charles Harris.
She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Ronnie Kale, Jackie and Eddie McSwain and Libby and Ford Glenn, all of Shelby; one sister, Louise Harrill of Charlotte; four granddaughters and two husbands, Sharon and Shaun Bradshaw of Greensboro, Dawn and Tom Durante of Loganville, Ga., Tiffany Kale and her fiancee, Brad Piercy, both of Shelby, and Kiley Glenn of Shelby; four grandsons and two wives, Ryan and Leslie Kale and Jonathan and Lisa Kale, both of Shelby, David McSwain and Wade Glenn, both of Shelby; two great-granddaughters, Brantleigh Bradshaw of Greensboro and Taylor Kale of Shelby; and two great-grandsons, Graham Bradshaw of Greensboro and Cody Kale of Shelby.
A memorial service will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Jim Richardson and the Rev. Clyde Buckner officiating. Burial will follow Wednesday at 2 p.m. before the memorial service.
The family will receive friends Wednesday after the memorial service at the church. Family headquarters will be at the home of Libby and Glenn Ford, 1362 Ellis Ferry Road, Shelby.

William Ingram
BOILING SPRINGS - Mr. William T. Ingram, 86, of 323 Dellwood Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late William Thomas and Sarah Ramsey Ingram. He was retired from McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft. He was a highly decorated veteran of World War II. He was former commander of Cliffside American Legion Post and a former constable of High Shoals Township in Rutherford County. He was a member of Boiling Springs Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jewel Davis Ingram of the home; two sons, Bill David Ingram of Union Mills and Gene Ingram of Indianola, Iowa; one daughter, Patsy Ingram Dothard of Jacksonville, Ala.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Boiling Springs Methodist Church with the Revs. Sheila Ferrell and Charlie Gibbons officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside.
Johnnie Perkins
SHELBY - Mr. Johnnie Wesley Perkins, 66, of 2015 Melrose Drive, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Robert Slotkin
CHERRYVILLE - Dr. Robert Irving Slotkin, 66, of 127 Windy Hill Drive, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., he was the son of the late Nathaniel and Lillian Rosenheim Slotkin. He was a retired pediatrician for Slotkin & Dudley Pediatrics in Charlotte. Later he worked as a pediatrician for Gaston County Health Department. He graduated from Purdue University and from the University of Virginia Medical School. He was an Army veteran who served in the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia "Trish" Beckham Slotkin; one son, Matthew Slotkin of Charlotte; two daughters, Tracy Slotkin of New York City and Leslie Riggs of Charlotte; and two grandchildren, Wyatt Riggs and Sage Riggs.
A private memorial service will be held later.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

SHELBY - James Dean Myers, infant son of Dean and Brandy Myers, of 1209 Maple Springs Church Road, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by four great-grandparents, O.C. and Thelma Wilson, Earl Myers and John Soyars.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Dannie and Helen Biddix of Shelby; paternal grandparents, Randy and Linda Myers of Shelby; four uncles, D.J. Biddix, Anthony Wilson and Michael Myers, all of Shelby, and Gerald Myers of Easley, S.C.; and three great-grandparents, Pauline Biddix of Kings Mountain, Garland Motley and Pencie Soyars, both of Danville, Va.
A graveside service will be today at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park with the Rev. Stan Webb officiating.
The family will receive friends today from 12:30 until 1:30 at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Ernest Guinn, 76, of 119 Gold Mine School Road, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.

Curtis Gaffney
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Curtis V. Gaffney, 77, of 305 Waco Road, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Great Falls, S.C., he was the son of the late Lloyd Victor and Elizabeth Curtis Gaffney. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, and he was a member of the Senior Golf Club Association of Cleveland County. He served two terms as city councilman. He was a Mason, a member of the American Legion and the Kiwanis Club. He was a Marine veteran, who served in World War II. He participated in action at Guadalcanal, Rendova, New Georgia and Guam. He was retired owner of Gaffney Barber Shop in Kings Mountain.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Helene Hardin Gaffney; and one sister, Irene Medlin.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Ellen Gaffney and Mike and Roxanna Gaffney, all of Kings Mountain; two daughters and one son-in-law, Susan and Steve Hicks and Pattie Capps, all of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Beatrice Lisciandro of James Town, N.Y. and Kathleen Peters of Bethlehem, Pa.; and seven grandchildren, Sabra Nantkes and her husband, Jeff, Lindsey, Hunter, Lauren and Laura Ashley Gaffney, Deshon Hicks and Lisa Pace.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Patterson Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Terry Bird and Michael Peters officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Rest Cemetery with full military honors.

Lillie Mae Pullen
LAWNDALE - Mrs. Lillie Mae Brown Pullen, 91, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999.
A native of Roanoke Rapids, she was born on June 28, 1908, the daughter of the late Samuel and Manisa Brown. She attended Carter's Chapel Baptist Church while growing up. Later she joined Lawndale First Baptist Church, where she was a member for more than 50 years. She taught Sunday school at Lawndale First Baptist Church and sang in the Senior Choir. She attended Henderson Institute and graduated from Winston-Salem Normal College, now, Winston-Salem State University. She began her teaching career in Warren County. She taught at Douglas High School for many years and retired while teaching at Fallston Elementary School. Four of her children became teachers. She was active in many organizations, including the North Carolina Teachers Association, the Mission Circle, the Winston-Salem Alumni Association and the Girl Scouts.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Frank Pullen, who died in 1995.
She is survived by six children, Franklin Pullen of Shelby, Shirley Smith of Upper Marlboro, Md., Gaynell Barber of LaPuente, Calif., Benjamin Pullen of Tampa, Fla., Delores Williamson of Greensboro, Eleanor Hortense Jamison of Durham; three sons-in-law; two daughters-in-law; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister; one brother; five sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Lawndale First Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Houze officiating.
The family will receive friends Thursday one hour before the service at the church.

BOSTIC - Ms. Betty Louise Bostic Guffey, 62, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Dorothy Sims, 76, of 130 Chapperal St., died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at her residence.
She was the daughter of the late Cliff and Laura Jo Francis Logan.
She is survived by her husband, L.G. Sims of the home; two daughters, Camillicem S. Hams of Federick, Md. and Joann Taylor of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two brothers, Charles Brown of Hyattsville, Md. and Dan Jolley of Cleveland County; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at New Bethel A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. Leroy Staley officiating.

SHELBY - Ms. Margaret Van Hovel Farrell, 83, formerly of Fifth Street, Lyndhurst, N.J. and Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby.
A native of Passaic, N.J., she was the daughter of the late John and Martha Machinow Van Hovel. She was the library assistant at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, N.J., and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William John Farrell Jr.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William John III and Ruth Farrell; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan Farrell and Fred Wasner and Patricia Farrell and Al Taranto; five grandchildren, Fred Wasner and his wife, Joanne, Robbie Wasner and his wife, Debbie, Al Taranto III and his wife, Rosalia, Susie Taranto Hartness, and her husband, David and Patti Taranto; and five great-grandchildren, Cindy Wasner, Matt Wasner, Lisa Wasner, Michelle Wasner and Jonathan Hartness.
The funeral mass will be Friday at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Lyndhurst, N.J. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
