BOSTIC — Mrs. Mary Pauline “Polly” Melton Rash, 74, of 5509 Whitesides Road, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at her home.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Big Level Baptist Church Cemetery in Mill Spring, with the Rev. Johnny Willis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen.
Rev. Billy Bass Sr.
LAKE JUNALUSKA - Rev. Billy Edward Bass Sr., 67, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Davis Medical Center in Statesville.
A native of Elmwood, he was born on May 26, 1932, the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. R.L. Bass. He attended Brevard College, where he played football the last year it was a sport there. He went to Wofford College, where he received a B.A. degree. He received a master's of divinity from Duke University. He was a minister in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, serving 42 years. His pastorates included Shelby, Oxford, Asheboro, Charlotte, Statesville, Wadesboro, Winston-Salem and Salisbury. His last appointment before retirement was District Superintendent of the Albemarle District.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Robin Denise Bass.
He is survived by his wife, of 44 years, Marjorie Singleton Bass; one son and daughter-in-law, Billy Edward Jr. and Krista Bass of Statesville; two daughters, Patricia Kay Bass of Charlotte and Katherine Leigh Bass Carr of Statesville; three grandsons, Derek Thomas Bass, Kyle Edward Bass and Zachary Simpson Carr; two sisters, Mary Lou Bigler of Seattle and Sara Tolbert of Greensboro; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at his home church, Lafayette Street United Methodist Church in Shelby with the Revs. Gervase C. Hitch and David Melton officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Mae Patterson
SHELBY - Mrs. Mae Elizabeth Revis Patterson, 82, of 401 N. Morgan St., formerly of 307 Gidney St., died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Rutherford County, she was born the daughter of the late George Richard and Liller Morrow Revis. She was co-owner of Patterson's Cleaners. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Willard Patterson; one brother, James R. Revis; and one sister, Vee Revis.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Arthur Willard Jr. and Virginia Patterson of Blacksburg, S.C.; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Gardner and Kenneth Wyatt of Shelby; one half sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Rockford Goode of Forest City; one granddaughter, Jessica Martin of Blacksburg; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Pat Correll and Allen Davis officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his step father, Kenneth Charles Swain; two brothers, Eboney Ross and Deondra Benjamin, both of Shelby; grandparents, Lisa Ross and Jack Tate; two aunts, Keshia Ross and Shereka Ross, both of Shelby; one godmother, Annette Swain of Shelby.

Robert Beam
BOILING SPRINGS - Mr. Robert Luther Beam, 71, of 233 Lawhon St., died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Rutherford County, he was born the son of the late Edley and Edna Robbins Beam. He was a retired textile worker, a Navy veteran and a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine Putnam Beam.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie Lu and Jimmy Mathis of Boiling Springs; three sisters, Margaret Sparks of Spindale, Mazel Rollins of Thomasville and Betty Tomblin of Asheville; two grandchildren, Pamela Henson and Jeffrey Mathis; one great-grandchild, Chelsie Mathis.
A graveside service will be today at 2 p.m. at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Ed Sessoms and Mr. Lansford Jolley officiating.

Mitch Bridges
DENVER, N.C. - Mr. Mitch P. Bridges, 45, of 4242 Lakeshore Road South, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Boiling Springs and formerly of Charlotte, he was born a son of the late Marvin C. and Daisy Pruette Bridges. He was a machine operator at Rexam. He was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jan Bridges.
He is survived by one sister, Kay Bridges of Shelby; one brother, Mike Bridges of Boiling Springs; one nephew and his wife, David and Lesia Bridges of Lexington, S.C.; and one sister-in-law and her husband, Alice B. and Charles McDaniel of Chapin, S.C.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Boiling Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Carroll Page officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.

Dr. Rowell Cloninger
SHELBY - Dr. Rowell C. Cloninger, 78, of Sterling House, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Claremont, he was the son of the late Edgar Vance and Fannie Estelle Connor Cloninger. He was a graduate of Claremont High School, the University of North Carolina and the University of Maryland Medical School. Throughout his medical school years, he was a member of the Naval ROTC. After graduating, he served two years of active duty. During the following year, he was awarded a surgical fellowship at Lahey Clinic in Boston. In 1951, he joined Dr. John C. Hamrick of Shelby for the practice of general surgery. Dr. Richard Bowling and Dr. James Potts joined them and their practice became Shelby Surgical Associates. He was a leader in the local medical profession and served more than once as chief of staff of Cleveland Memorial Hospital. He was a member and a leader at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, where he served as junior warden and senior warden for several terms. He was the team doctor for Shelby High School Golden Lions for many years. He was a loyal fan of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. He was proud that five of his children and two of his grandchildren graduated from the University of North Carolina.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Kenneth Lee Cloninger and Dr. Charles Edgar Cloninger; and two sisters, Louise Cloninger Cummings and Mary Eugenia Cloninger.
He is survived by two sons, Chip Cloninger of Shelby and Chuck Cloninger of Asheville; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Debi and Chris McDaniel, Beth and John Mayo, both of Shelby and Stephanie and Gary Stadler of Chapel Hill; and five granddaughters, Taylor McDaniel of Atlanta, Bradey McDaniel of Chapel Hill, Kaitlin Mayo, Marley Mayo and Natalie Mayo, all of Shelby.
A memorial service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer with the Rev. Gene McDowell officiating.
The family will receive friends this afternoon and this evening at the home of Chris and Debi McDaniel, 1800 Arbor Way Drive, Country Club Gardens, Shelby.

Sue Brooks
STANLEY - Mrs. Sue Lineberger Brooks, 66, of 110 Airport Road, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at her residence.
A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Lillie L. Lineberger. She was retired from Gaston County Dye Machine Company in Mount Holly, where she was a supervisor in the electronics division. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Stanley, where she was a member of the choir, a children's group teacher, an active member of the WMU and the tape ministry.
She is survived by her husband, Wilfred Brooks; one son, Boyce Brooks of Kansas City, Mo.; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Tim Hopkins of Mount Sterling, Ohio; one sister, Betty Faye Lineberger of Dallas; three brothers, Fred Lineberger, Larry Lineberger and Thomas Lineberger, all of Dallas; and two grandchildren, Kyra Hopkins and Erin Hopkins.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Stanley with Dr. Alfred Miller and the Rev. Charles High officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Gardens. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Ramsey, Bob Brown, Bob McGee, Miller Garrison, Tommy McClure and Red Poteat.

Rev. Gus Randolph
BURNSVILLE - The Rev. Gus W. Randolph, 86, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at the VA Medical Center in Asheville.
He was a World War II Navy veteran. He pastored Baptist churches in North Carolina and Michigan. He was a member of Bakers Creek Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday school superintendent and teacher.
He is survived by his wife, June King Randolph; two daughters, Daphne Bridges of Boiling Springs and Beatrice Stockton of Fairfield, Calif.; one brother, Chester Randolph of Hazel Park, Mich.; eight granddaughters; six great-grandsons; and one great-great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the chapel at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville with the Rev. Royce Ball officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday after the service at the funeral home.

Catherine Chapman
SPINDALE - Mrs. Catherine Blanton Chapman, 65, of 321 Wood Lane Drive, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Rutherford Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Claude C. and Mary Zennie Chatman Blanton. She was a member of Sunshine United Methodist Church in Bostic. She was retired from the textile industry, where she was a winder.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John S. Chapman.
She is survived by one daughter, Cathy Chapman Loukaitis of Bostic; two brothers, Bobby Blanton of Ellenboro and Willie Blanton of Bostic; one sister, Faye Chapman of Bostic and three grandchildren.

Dovie Davis
BOILING SPRINGS - Mrs. Dovie Martin Davis, 86, of Crawley Memorial Hospital nursing home, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Crawley Memorial.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late William and Hattie Horn Martin. She had been retired for 16 years from the Cleveland County School System, where she was a cafeteria worker. She was a member of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of Green Bethel Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Usher Board and the Senior Choir.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Davis.
She is survived by one foster son, Jimmy Hill; one foster daughter, Ann Jones; three nephews, Paul R. Phillips, Raymond Phillips and William Martin, all of Shelby; one niece, Sadie White of Los Angeles; and one sister-in-law, Jennie Martin of Shelby.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Green Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Wade Wallace officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.
