Martha McSwain
CONCORD - Ms. Martha Wood McSwain, 85, of Concord Nursing Center, formerly of 313 N. Franklin St., China Grove, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at Concord Nursing Center.
A native of Pelham, S.C., she was born on June 15, 1914, the daughter of the late Mabel Steading and Thomas Henry Wood. She was educated in the South Carolina school system. She was retired from China Grove Mills where she worked in the inspecting department. She was a member of First Baptist Church in China Grove, where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School class and a member of the Oasis Senior Citizens Group.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Worth McSwain, who died on Nov. 17, 1970.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Ronald W. and Betsy McSwain of Ahoskie; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Mac Lancaster of Lawndale and Emily and Barry Wicker of Concord; three grandchildren, Chris Lancaster, Kevin Lancaster and Esther Wakefield; four great-grandchildren, Martha Lee Lancaster, Hunter Lancaster, Andrew Lancaster and Elijah Wakefield; and two sisters, Mary Hedgpath of Chester, S.C. and Bet Parnell of Concord.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in China Grove with the Rev. David Phelps officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 2:45 p.m. before the service at the church.

Charles Lindsay Sr.
HICKORY - Mr. Charles Reid Lindsey Sr., 79, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Burke County, he was born on Sept. 18, 1920, the son of the late Cyrus Perry and Texie Evelyn Hoyle Lindsay. He was retired owner/operator of Lindsay Hosiery. He was a member of Catawba Valley Hosiery Association. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in World War II in Alaska.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy L. and Ron Waldron and Mary L. and David Rachui, all of Mooresville; three sons and daughters-in-law, William J. and Ruth Lindsay and Robert E. Sr. and Linda Lindsay, all of Hickory, and Reid Jr. and Beth Lindsay of Shelby; two sisters, Dorothy L. Dixon of Hickory and Margaret L. Vinay of High Point; two brothers, Jack A. Lindsay of Hickory and Harold J. Lindsay of Hildebran; ten grandchildren, Sharon Macaluso, Cheryl Hunsberger, Tara Pannell, Genia Huffman, Robert Lindsay Jr., Karen Scheld, Brian Waldron, Charles Reid Lindsay III, Megan Lindsay and Laura Beth Lindsay; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the chapel at Catawba Funeral Home with Taylor Wood, Al Goff and Charlie Kerr officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Robert Lindsay Jr., Brian Waldron, Charles Lindsay III, Gary Macaluso, Karl Hunsberger, Don Pannell and John Scheld.

Jon "Mike" Champion
SHELBY - Mr. Jon Michael "Mike" Champion, 57, of 3650 W. Dixon Blvd., died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born the son of Gladys Bland Champion of Shelby and the late W.H. "Dub" Champion. He was a self employed real estate agent. He was a member of Westview Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Elaine Blanton Champion; one son and daughter-in-law, Jon Christopher and Kathy Champion of Savannah, Ga.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Robert Wright of Charlotte and Rebecca and Lee Johnson of Shelby; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Joy and Bob Ramsey of Asheville and Sue and Charles Camp of Shelby; and five grandchildren, Christian Davis, Jon Lawton Champion, Jonathan Tyler Green, William Christopher Green and Keilee Rhiannon Wright.
A graveside service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery with the Revs. Phil Bailey, Jimmy Greene and Dr. James Richardson officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5:30 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and other times at the home of Gladys Champion, 500 Charles Road, Shelby.

Jessie Davis
SHELBY - Mrs. Jessie Lee Dobbins Davis, 80, of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Rutherford County, she was born on Jan. 1, 1919, the daughter of the late Fletcher Lee and Lanner Evelyn Hawkins Dobbins. She was a homemaker and a member of New Bethel Church of the Nazarene and the Willing Workers Sunday school class.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Wesley "Jim" Davis; and three brothers, Jack Dobbins, Ernest Dobbins and Gerald Dobbins.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and the Rev. Dean Lavender of Morganton and Lydia and Don Bingham of Shelby; one brother, John Dobbins of Forest City; five sisters, Margaret Early and Betty Holtzclaw, both of Ellenboro, and Laura Tesseneer, Christine Wilkerson and Anna Mae Morrow, all of Forest City; two granddaughters and their husbands, Kim and Kevin Ford and Wendy and John Panther, all of Shelby; and two great-grandchildren, Joshua Ford and Haley Ford.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at New Bethel Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Reed Jones officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.

Virginia Russell
NEW LONDON - Ms. Virginia Tucker Russell, 84, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Wesley Nursing Center in Charlotte.
A native of Gainesville, Ga., she was born on Dec. 27, 1914, the daughter of the late Harry Richardson and Frances Aurelia Tucker. She had lived in New London for 40 years. She graduated from Brenau College and taught in the Georgia public schools for seven years. In 1992 she and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Bernard C. Russell, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. She was a homemaker and a leader in the Cub Scouts, the Girl Scouts and the New London United Methodist Church, as a Sunday school teacher and as president of the United Methodist Women.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Rosa Linda Russell Talbert of Shelby and Adele Russell Fitzgerald of Kannapolis; two sons, Edwin Lewis Russell of Shelby, Ala. and Dr. Samuel Stephen Russell of Huntsville; four grandchildren, Daniel Russell Talbert and Joy Linda Talbert, both of Shelby, and Robert Terry Fitzgerald and Thomas Russell Fitzgerald, both of Kannapolis; one sister, Mrs. Sue Blackstock of Thomaston, Ga.; and one cousin, Mrs. Jimmie Nell Sours of Gainesville.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at New London United Methodist Church with the Revs. Pat Jenkins and Gervase Hitch officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday after the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

ELLENBORO - Johnathan Taylor Bracebridge, infant son of Billy and Crystal Bracebridge of 607 Stroud Road, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville.
He was preceded in death by one paternal great-grandparent, Johnny Blanton; and one maternal grandparent, Ricky Sentell.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by paternal grandparents, Kathy and Larry McFarland of Ellenboro; three paternal great-grandparents, Lucy Blanton of Ellenboro and Plato and Aileen McFarland of Casar; one maternal grandparent, Kathy Sentell of Shelby; four maternal great-grandparents, Betty and David Carter of Polkville and Mary and Ryan Sentell of Cherryville.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Hazel C. Washington, 74, of 218 Orr Terrace, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Kings Mountain Hospital.

Joseph "Joe" Brooks
DETROIT, Mich. - Mr. Joseph Franklin "Joe" Brooks, 72, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999.
A native of Hollie, he was born on May 20, 1927, the son of the late Aurthor and Bertha Hayden Brooks. He attended Graham Town High School where he played basketball. He was an Army veteran who served under the 304th Army Air Force Base Unit until Dec. 23, 1946. He married Roberta Proctor on Dec. 25, 1951. He moved to Detroit in 1953. He was employed by Chevrolet and Cadillac. He retired from Cadillac after 30 years of service. He received many awards and nominations for his service. He never missed a day of work while employed at Cadillac. He was a sports fan. He attended Mount Zion Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Gertrude Brooks; and one brother, Sam.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, three with spouses, Franklin and Diane, Jeffrey and Lona, Alford, and Barbara and Bob; eight grandchildren, Gene, Jefferey, Angela, Matthew, Leon, Joann, Jordan and Brandon; two great-grandchildren, Erykah and Daigon; two brothers, Thurman William and Franklin; two sisters, Catherine Montgomery and Mary Smart; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The funeral was today at 11 a.m. at the chapel at Harold D. Murdock Funeral Home, 8033 Puritan, Detroit, Mich. with Pastor Belden officiating.

Lillie "Day" Champion
SHELBY - Mrs. Lillie "Day" Turner Champion, 92, of 2914 Lake Drive, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was born on Feb. 3, 1907, the daughter of the late D.S. and Sarah Alice Greenhill Turner. She was retired from Double Shoals Cotton Mill. She was a member of Double Shoals United Methodist Church for more than 70 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Harley Jones Turner, Carl Turner and Lorne Turner; and one sister, Lottie Towery.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Ruth Champion of Gastonia and Delmar and Irene Champion of Jacksonville, Fla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Harlen Peeler of Shelby; one brother, Wilber Turner of Cherryville; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at her home church, Double Shoals United Methodist Church with the Rev. James D. Reep officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park in Boiling Springs.

SPINDALE - Mr. Claude Carroll "Bim" Carpenter, 76, of 415 Tennessee St., died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Rutherford County, he was born on April 11, 1923, the son of the late John Carroll and Pearl Weast Carpenter. He was a member of Spindale Presbyterian Church. He was an Army veteran, who served in World War II. He was retired from Firestone Mills in Gastonia.
He is survived by one sister, Kathleen Irvin of Shelby; two nephews, David Norris of Forest City and Steve Norris of Winston-Salem; and one brother-in-law, Robert Irvin of Shelby.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Spindale Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Forest City.
