Vera Eskridge
SHELBY - Mrs. Vera Lattimore Eskridge, 94, of 1101 Fallston Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late M.P. and Azelia Lattimore. She was a retired sales manager for Bon Marche and a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Letha Saunders prayer group.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert L. Eskridge.
She is survived by two sisters, Madge Baber and Glennie Blanton and her husband, Marshall, all of Shelby, and many nephews and nieces.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Webb Chapel at First Baptist Church with Dr. Robert Canoy and the Rev. Glenn Davenport officiating. The body will be placed in the chapel 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and other times at the home of Marshall and Glennie Blanton, 702 W. Sumter St., Shelby.

GASTONIA - Miss Jamie Lynn Camp, 17, of 240 Welch Avenue, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church in Gastonia with the Revs. Don Mott , Roy Barbee and David Stewart officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 at the church.

Lillian Gleaves
SHELBY - Mrs. Lillian Gleaves, 91, of 210 Buffalo St., died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999.
Born Aug. 2, 1908, in Wilmington, she was the daughter of the late John and Carrie Dorsey.
She became a Christian at an early age and was a faithful member of Durham United Methodist Church. She was an educator, retired from Upchurch High School in Raeford.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cornelius "Benjamin" Gleaves.
Survivors include a niece, two great-nephews, two great-nieces, nine great-great-nephews, eight great-great-nieces and many other relatives.
The funeral will be today at 1 p.m. at Durham United Methodist Church, with Pastor Roger Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends today at the church 30 minutes before the service.

Ethel Whitworth
HICKORY - Mrs. Ethel Ussery Whitworth, 92, of 1411 3rd St., Place S.W., died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at her residence.
A native of Jones County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Will and Sallie Myrick Sharp. She was a member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Whitworth.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Mildred Ussery of Gaffney, S.C. and Grover and Eva Ussery of Lawndale; three daughters, Mrs. Zella Gaideer of Detroit, Mrs. Eloise Fambrough and Essie Johnson, both of Hickory; 34 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church with Elder James Benton officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour before the service at the church.

SHELBY - Mrs. Majel Stewart Allen, 81, formerly of Sheriff Allen Road, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Edward Jason and Carrie Angela McDaniel Stewart. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a former teacher in the nursery department.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sheriff J. Haywood Allen; and two sisters, Vivian Biltcliff and Bertie Thompson.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Haywood Jr. and Rhonda Allen of Shelby; two daughters and one son-in-law, Kathryn Allen Monroe and Jonanna Allen and James Robbs, all of Shelby; one sister, Mrs. Jesse (Willie Sue) Palmer of Kings Mountain; three grandchildren, Keely Monroe Londre and her husband, Dr. Brad Londre, Holly Robbs and Jennifer Allen, all of Shelby.
A graveside service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park with Dr. Robert Canoy officiating.

Glenn Lane
RUTHERFORDTON - Mr. Glenn Lane, 93, of 440 Ed Thompson Road, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, at Woodlands Nursing Center.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Burgin and Alice Foster Lane. He was a member of Cane Creek Baptist Church. He worked in a textile mill in the slashing room.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Ensley Lane; two sons, Dale Garth Lane and Bill Lane Sr.; and one daughter-in-law, Winnie Lane.
He is survived by one son, Norris Lane of Union Mills; one brother, Oakie Lane of Rutherfordton; five grandchildren, Patsy Cook and Dale Lane, both of Rutherfordton, Dr. Bill Lane of Temple, Texas, Scott Lane of Statesville and Todd Lane of Greensboro; one daughter-in-law, Madge Lane of Shelby; 11 great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Cane Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Lance Scarlett and Earl Waters officiating. Burial will follow at Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Bonnie Weiler
CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Bonnie Joyce Weiler, 61, of 124 Harbor Point Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Birmingham, Ala., she was the daughter of Evelyn Wilson Simmons of Miami, Fla. and the late Lewis Kalif. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church in Shelby.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Machael F. Weiler of the home; two sons, Carl Lee of Pimbrook, Fla. and Michael Lee of Wilmington; three daughters, Laurie Vincent of Hollywood, Fla., Michele Carrin of Boiling Springs and Tammy Alford of Defuniak Spring, Fla.; one brother, Lewis Kalif Jr. of Gainesville, Fla.; one sister, Barbara Villalba of Miami; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday 2 p.m. at Buffalo Baptist Church with the Rev. Max Turner officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

June Rhyne Herndon
KINGS MOUNTAIN - June Rhyne Herndon died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia. June was a native of Gaston, Co. N.C., daughter of the late Miles Hoffman and the late Rubye Dent Rhyne. She was a graduate of Gastonia High School and Belmont Abbey College. She did post graduate studies at UNC Chapel Hill and the University of California/Los Angeles, Calif. and Oxford University. She received her Master's Degree at UNC. She was formerly a faculty member in the English Department at Sacred Heart College. She was an active member for many years at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, Gastonia. June will be remembered as a drum majorette in high school, a pianist, an English professor, a tennis fan and player, a devout member of Saint Mark's Church, a loyal friend, and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Surviving are husband, William M. Herndon, Kings Mountain; son, H. Spears Mullen Jr. and Alyce and their children Catharine and Peter, Raleigh; daughter, Julia Hart and husband Lewis Hart Jr., their son, Lewis Hart III of Chappaqua, N.Y.; son, Patrick M. Mullen and wife, Deborah, and their son McKay, Gastonia; step son, Dr. William M. Herndon Jr. and wife, Bobbie and their sons, Alexander and Andrew, Charlotte; step-daughter, Virginia Herndon-Baker and husband, Charles R. Baker and their children, Garth and Charlotte, Portland, Ore.; step sons Robert Herndon of Kings Mountain and David Herndon of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Patricia Thomas, Chapel Hill; brother-in-law, J.E. Herndon Jr. and wife Patricia of Kings Mountain.
A memorial service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, 258 W. Franklin Blvd. in Gastonia with the Rev. Dr. Michael C.D. McDaniel, retired Bishop of the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and the Rev. Norman Hull-Ryde, deacon officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service in the Parish Hall, at the church, and other times at the Herndon home.

Rush Mintz
SHELBY - Mr. Rush Shull Mintz, of 330 Gold St., died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at the V.A. Hospital in Asheville.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born on Jan. 18, 1919, the son of the late William Drayton and Edith McCraw Mintz. He was a retired salesman from Keeter Ford Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Shelby, and was an Air Force veteran who served in World War II. He was a prisoner of war with the Germans.
He is survived by his wife, Mary McDaniel Mintz of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Donna Mintz of Jamestown; one daughter and son-in-law, Charlie and Robin M. Magness of Boiling Springs; three grandchildren, Holly Mintz, Josh Mintz and Rebecca Mintz, all of Jamestown; and three sisters, Ernestine Toney of Ellenboro, and Frances Walker and Eloise Martin, both of Shelby.

John Putnam
GROVER - Mr. John Sims Putnam, 63, of 1050 Cleveland Avenue, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born on Feb. 23, 1936, the son of Arville Sims and Jane Anthony Putnam. He was retired from Shoco Distributors, Putnam Distributors and Foote Mineral Company. He was a member of Second Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Limestone College, where he earned a degree in Business Administration. He was a retired Chief Petty Officer from the Navy. He served in the Vietnam War and was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.
He is survived by his wife, Susie Setsuko Putnam of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Annette Putnam of North Augusta, S.C., and Thomas and Terri Putnam of Grover; three grandsons, Bryce Putnam, Blake Putnam and Clayton Taylor; and one sister and brother-in-law, Diana and John Halyak of Charleston, S.C.

Hilliard Black
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Hilliard Black, 88, of 517 Rhodes Avenue, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Harley Black and Annie Ware Black Self. He was a former employee of Margrace Mill in Kings Mountain. He retired from Foote Mineral Company in Kings Mountain. He was a lifetime member of Central United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain, and he was a charter member and former president of the Methodist Men. He was former assistant treasurer at Central United Methodist Church and served as usher for more than 50 years. He led singing at White Oak Manor for approximately 20 years. He was a kind and devoted man to his friends and his church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary McCaslin Black of Kings Mountain; one son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Pat Black of Lexington; one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Harold Jackson of Spartanburg, S.C.; one sister, Aileen Gibson of Kings Mountain; five grandchildren, Alicia King and her husband, Stefan, of Woodstock, Ga., Ashlie Mazurowski and her husband, Pete, and Alison Jackson, both of Spartanburg, Stephanie Black and Trey Black, both of Lexington; and one great-grandchild, Lauren King.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church with the Revs. Harrison Hinson and Robert Little officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Rest Cemetery.
