Vellis Wright
LINCOLNTON - Mr. Vellis Hicks Wright, 87, of 1844 Vellis Wright Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Lincoln Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born on Jan. 19, 1912, the son of the late David Franklin and Suzanna Jane Wright. He was a retired self-employed farmer. He was a member of Bess Chapel United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence Wright, Marshall Wright and Ellis Wright.
He is survived by his wife, Elva Houser Wright; one son and daughter-in-law, Lewis and Martha Wright of Lincolnton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Jack Huss of Valdese and Carleen and Buster Gilbert of Lincolnton; one brother, Forrest Wright of Vale; one sister, Faye Richards of Fallston; five grandchildren, Ronald Gilbert and Derek Wright, both of Lincolnton, Doris Lynch of Denver, Lynn Mosteller of Lawrence, Kan. and Brent Huss of Greensboro; and one great-grandchild, Paul Lynch.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church with the Revs. John Stein and George Williams officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Esther Bradshaw, 57, of 317 Chestnut St., died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
A memorial service will be today at 7 p.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel with Bradley Ellis officiating.

John McSwain
SHELBY - Mr. John D. McSwain,74, of 5425 Canterbury Road, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late John Lawson and Ida Black McSwain. He was retired from P.P.G. He was a member of Shelby Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was a Marine veteran, who served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He received a Purple Heart.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary Eskridge McSwain; one brother, Bonnie McSwain; and one sister, Vivian Davidson.
He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Arnold and Gertrude McSwain of Shelby; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Dessie Warren and Jane and Russell Gilreath, all of Shelby and Clarene and Rubin Whitfield of Garner.
The funeral was today at 11 a.m. at the chapel at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with Brother Lawrence Walton officiating. Burial followed at Double Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends today one hour before the service at the funeral home.

BOSTIC - Mr. Woodrow W. Bostic, 85, of 160 Walker Mill Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at White Oak Manor Nursing Home.

RUTHERFORDTON - Miss Rachel Ida Hill, 87, of White Oak Manor, Rutherfordton, formerly of Cliffside, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late William G. and Rosa Mayse Hill. She was retired from Cone Mill, Cliffside Plant. She was a member of Cliffside Baptist Church. She cared for her mother for many years. She supported her church, family and friends.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Edward Wiggins
SHELBY - Mr. Edward Yates Wiggins, 80, of 708 Walker Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at the V.A. Medical Center in Asheville.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Elzie Anzie and Austrillia Putnam Wiggins. He was retired from Bost Bakery and Ora Mill. He was a member of the D.A.V. He was an Army veteran who served in World War II. He was a tank destroyer crewman and took part in the following battles: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Eamet Campaign Medal with five Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal and a Purple Heart.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jossie Lee Hamby.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Allen Wiggins of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Donna Green Wiggins of Shelby; two sisters, Elvaree Pillois of West Virginia and Annie Bell Womack of Morganton; one granddaughter and her husband, Laura Wiggins and Shan Ford of Kings Mountain; one grandson, Jacob E. Wiggins of Shelby; and one great-granddaughter, Savannah Lynn Ford of Kings Mountain.
A graveside service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Sandy Run Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. R.W. Davis officiating.

A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Elijah and Mary Greene Daves. She was retired from Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was a Baptist.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Coy Dover Lankford.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Kibby "Casey" and Jane Daves of Spartanburg, S.C.; three sisters, Billie D. Jenks, Alice J. Daves and Jewel E. Greene, all of Shelby; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Patterson Ledford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry P. and Carol Ledford of Shelby and Ben T. and Sheena Ledford of Satellite Beach, Fla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Sue Ledford and William D. Lutz of Shelby; seven grandchildren, Stephen Ledford of Satellite Beach, Glenn Ledford of Washington, D.C., Gregg Lutz, Patrick Lutz and Terry Ledford, all of Shelby, Susan Arthur of Boiling Springs and Carol Ann Cornatzer of Charlotte; and ten great-grandchildren.

SHELBY - Mr. Clarence S. "Doc" Nolan Jr., 73, of 115 Dellinger Road, Apt. 101, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Clarence S. Sr. and Greathel Borders Nolan. He was the retired owner/operator of The Convenience Store. He was a Baptist.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Hilda Gibson Nolan.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Vickey Kay and Ron Calabrese of Shelby; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven Wayne and Heather Nolan of Prince Edward Island, Canada, and Clifton Eric and Lori J. Nolan of Double Shoals; his mother-in-law, Maude Davidson of Shelby; six grandchildren, Devin Miles Nolan, Remmington Colt Nolan, Steven Calabrese, Jessica Nolan, Joshua Nolan and Taylor Nolan; and three sisters, Emily J. FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Mr. John Earl "J.B." Brown Jr., 44, of 7025 Okeechobee Road, formerly of Shelby, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Bennettsville, S.C., he was the son of John Earl Sr. and Charlotte Ann Costner Brown of Shelby. He was the night manager of the Treasure Coast Inn and a member of Dover Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by one brother, George Michael Brown.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Alayne Petty Brown of Surfside Beach, S.C.; one son, Jonathan Michael Brown of Surfside Beach; one daughter, Jade Carson Brown of Surfside Beach; one stepdaughter, Amber Petty of Surfside Beach; one sister, Robin Brown Braddy of Shelby; and one niece, Madison Braddy of Shelby.
