Lola Lawrence
LAWNDALE - Mrs. Lola Thompson Lawrence, 76, of 616 Belwood-Casar Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at her residence.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Clara Strong Thompson. She was retired from Carolina Solvent, Inc. She was a member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church and the Eastern Star Lodge No. 3 in Lawndale.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cotie Lawrence Sr.; and one son, Johnny Frank Lawrence Sr.
She is survived by four daughters, Joanne L. Sharpe of Shelby, Lorene Lawrence of Hickory, Shirley Lawrence and Thomasine Lawrence, both of Lawndale; six sons and three daughters-in-law, Cotie and Shirley Lawrence of Hickory, Eugene and Minnie Lawrence of Shelby, J. Reid Lawrence of Winston-Salem, Tommy and Contrenia Lawrence, Everette Lawrence and Larry Lawrence, all of Lawndale; 44 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Lawndale with Elder James Benton officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday 30 minutes before the service at the church.

Michael Phillips
SHELBY - Mr. Michael Wayne Phillips, 40, of 2057 Kendrick Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Fort Campbell, Ky., he was the son of Ruby Ballard McCombs of the home and the late Charles Edward Phillips. He was retired from Doran Mills.
He is survived by one daughter, Michelle Phillips of the home, and three brothers, William Phillips and Kenneth Phillips, both of Shelby, and Charles Phillips Jr. of the home.
A memorial service will be today at 2 p.m. at Midview Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Hope officiating.

Van "Dock" Green
LAWNDALE - Mr. Van "Dock" Green, 83, of 646 Sugar Hill Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Lincoln County, he was born on Sept. 3, 1916, the son of the late Harvey and Emma Hill Green. He was retired from Doran Mills. He was a member of Friendly Chapel Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran who served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Zeno Green, Harvey Green, Sam Green and Martin Green; and three sisters, Zennie Riley, Lillie Williams and Carrie Ward.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Willis Green; two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Jewell Green of Lawndale and Tim and Lisa Green of Crouse; four daughters and one son-in-law, Marie Green and Sherrill Martinez, both of Lawndale, Nellie and Glenn Williams of Shelby and Janie Tessener of Polkville; two brothers, Yates Green of Lawndale and Ray Canipe of Kings Mountain; one sister, Faye Stacey of Kings Mountain; nine grandchildren, Kevin Williams, Stevie Williams, Dusty Williams, Chad Bradley, Justin Green, Hunter Green, Keisha Martinez, Jada Martinez and Adam Martinez; and two great-grandchildren, Lauren Williams and Ashton Martinez.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Friendly Chapel Baptist Church with the Revs. Wade Boone and Norris Willis officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Stamey Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Glenn and Nellie Williams, 715 W. Zion Church Road, Shelby.
Max Holtzclaw
POLKVILLE - Mr. Max Lee Holtzclaw, 62, of 2514 Circle Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at the V.A. Medical Center in Asheville.
A native of Rutherford County, he was born on Nov. 14, 1937, the son of Mattie Ray Crowe Holtzclaw and the late Charles Nathaniel Holtzclaw. He was retired and disabled as the owner/operator of Holtzclaw Saw Mill. He was a member of Polkville Baptist Church. He was in the Army Infantry.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Peggie Ann Goforth Holtzclaw; one daughter, Jewell Ray Holtzclaw of Polkville; three brothers, A.C. Holtzclaw and Robert Holtzclaw, both of Rutherfordton and Clarence Holtzclaw of Maiden; and one sister, Dorothy Holtzclaw Gettys of Polkville.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Polkville Baptist Church with the Rev. Alton Martin officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Thomas Dellinger
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Thomas Franklin Dellinger, 76, of 303 E. Sixth St., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at 117 Preston Trail.
A native of Gaston County, he was born on Jan. 21, 1923, the son of the late Julies Clarence and Dona Sellers Dellinger. He was retired from Dixie Lumber Company in Cherryville, where he was a brick mason foreman. He was a member of Saint John's Lutheran Church in Cherryville. He was an Army veteran who served in World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie Carpenter Dellinger who died in November 1993.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Bea D. Rhoney of Kings Mountain; three brothers, J.C. Dellinger Jr., Lester Dellinger and Max Dellinger, all of Cherryville; and four sisters, Ruby Hubbard and Dot Blalock, both of Shelby and Kay Marx and Gail Peele, both of Lincolnton.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Saint John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Michael Collins officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery.

HENDERSONVILLE - Mrs. Thelma Patterson Smathers, 88, of 600 Carolina Village, formerly of Kings Mountain, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Carolina Village Health Care in Hendersonville.
She was the daughter of the late A. Hunter and Fairy Long Patterson. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain and was a homemaker. She attended State Teachers College in Fredricksburg, Va. She graduated from High Point College in High Point.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Smathers; and three sisters, Madge P. Warlick, Dorothy P. Etheridge and Gaily P. Shapiro.
She is survived by three nephews, John Warlick of Kings Mountain, Dr. Donn Freeman of Raleigh and Richard Etheridge of Plano, Texas.
A graveside service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Harrison Hinson officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday one hour before the service at Harris Funeral Home.

STANLEY - Mr. George Wilfred Brooks, 67, of 110 Airport Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late George E. and Aquilla Scruggs Brooks. He was an Army veteran, who served in the Korean War. He was retired from Talon Zipper Plant where he was a supervisor, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Stanley, where he was a deacon, a former Sunday school director and was active on many committees.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sue Lineberger Brooks; and four brothers, Floyd Brooks, Maynard Brooks, Palmer Brooks and Flay Brooks.
He is survived by one son, Boyce Brooks of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Tim Hopkins of Mount Sterling, Ohio; three brothers, C.J. Brooks of Crawfordsville, Ind., Dean Brooks of Gastonia and Dennis Brooks of Alta Vista, Va.; five sisters, Reba Tapy of Dallas, Irene Wane and Edith Hoffman, both of Shelby, Gladys Boroughs of Greensboro and Clara Lowe of Mount Holly; and two grandchildren, Kyra Hopkins and Erin Hopkins.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Stanley, with Dr. Alfred Miller and the Rev. Charles H. High officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Gardens. Pallbearers will be Bob McGee, Bob Brown, Red Poteat, Tommy McClure, Neb Hollis and Miller Garrison. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of First Baptist Church in Stanley.

SHELBY - Mr. Coleman Franklin Self, 82, of 205 Birdie Lane, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at his home.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Nelson G. and Docia May Wright Self. He retired as a self-employed contractor with Self Construction Co. and as a dairy farmer. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Doug Sharp Adult 8 Sunday School Class, whose members will serve as honorary pallbearers. He was a former member of the Master Sunday School Class at Elizabeth Baptist Church. He had served on the Shelby and Cleveland County zoning boards and on the water committee for Woodbridge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Laura Mae Borders Self.
He is survived by his second wife, Frances Kuykendall Self; a son, Ronald Coleman Self and his wife Dee of Shelby; a daughter, Kay Reynolds and her husband Richard of Shelby; a stepdaughter, Peggy Conlon and her husband Bob of Kings Mountain; two brothers, J.B. Self of Greensboro and Buford Lee Self of Shelby; three sisters, Louise Norman, Kathleen Wolfe and Mae Cabiness, all of Shelby; and grandchildren, Barry Self, Ron Self and Tracy Reynolds Montgomery and her husband Andy, all of Shelby.
