LATTIMORE - Mrs. Mattie Lee Ray, 91, of Lattimore, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Chive and Cara Bridges. She was a homemaker and a member of Double Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carol Ray; and a brother, Claude Bridges.
She is survived by a sister, Ailene Lipscomb of Melbourne, Fla.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Double Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Eddie Brackett officiating.

CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Velma Greene Day, 85, of 418 Old Post Road, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

SHELBY - Mr. Buren Lawrence Weaver, 78, of Shelby, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Julius Vernon and Vernie Hunt Weaver. He was retired from Dover Textiles - J&C Dyeing, where he was a maintenance manager. He was a World War II Air Force veteran. He was a member of Hoey Memorial Methodist Church, where he served on the Nominating and Personnel Committee, the Work Area on Nurture, the Outreach Committee and the Administrative Council.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maud Mauney Weaver; a brother, William Durant Weaver; and two sisters, Ruby Weaver Gasky and Aileen Weaver Payne.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence Edwin and Jacque Weaver of Denver; a daughter, Peggy Joyce Weaver of Charlotte; four brothers, Julius Buford Weaver, J.V. Weaver Jr. and James Edwin Weaver, all of Shelby, and Harold E. "Pete" Weaver of Casar; two sisters, Veronica Weaver McNeely of Connelly Springs and Betty Weaver Lutz of Belwood; three grandchildren, Matthew Jason Weaver of Spartanburg, S.C., Jeffrey Lawson Weaver and Laura Ashlynn Weaver, both of Denver; and a special niece, Misty Weaver McNeely of Polkville.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Hoey Memorial Methodist Church, with the Rev. Billy Towery officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.

FOREST CITY - Mr. Lewis Reid Hardin, 85, of 184 Sedgefield Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at his home.
The funeral will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Padgett and King Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Andrews officiating. Burial will follow in Cool Springs Cemetery.

Gerald D. Tucker
HICKORY - Mr. Gerald D. Tucker, 67, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at his home.
Born Nov. 12, 1932, he was the son of the late Grady A. and Ila Hinson Tucker.
He retired in November 1994 as a civil engineer with the N.C. Department of Transportation. He served with the Army in the Korean Conflict, was a former scoutmaster with Troop 290 in Shelby and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Hickory.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Barrett Tucker; three sons, Rick Tucker of Atlanta, Rodney Tucker of Liberty, Tenn., and Mark Tucker of Hickory; one sister, Claudine Hathcock of Locust; and one grandchild, Cora Lynn Tucker.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, with Pastor Charles Kyker and the Rev. Dana McKim officiating. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Dub Beaver, Jack Boyles, Dean Bridges, Charles Gettys, Greg McLaughlin, Keith Sain, Dan Whitesides, Gene Wilson and Gerald Witherspoon.

FOREST CITY - Mr. Charles Edgar Lewis, 78, of 156 Doggett Road, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Rutherford County, son of the late William Guy and Iree Green Lewis. He retired from AGI in Forest City, was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Dobbins Lewis of the home; four sons, William A. Lewis and Barry D. Lewis of Forest City, Robert C. Lewis of Ellenboro and David G. Lewis of Summerville, S.C.; one sister, Lois Lewis Brown of Pickens, S.C.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, with the Revs. Jeff Springer and Marvin Green officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Rudolph Cole, 73, of 424 Belvedere Circle, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.

FALLSTON - Mr. Ernest Cecil Wright, 71, of 203 Charolais Drive, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Ernest Doc and Della Sweezy Wright. He was the retired owner-operator of Wright's Jewelry Store in Fallston and a Nationwide Insurance agent for 40 years. He was a graduate of Fallston High School. He was a lifetime member of Friendship United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men and held numerous offices over his lifetime. He was a charter member of Fallston Community Volunteer Fire Department, where he was both fire chief and chairman of the board of directors. He was a lifetime member of the N.C. Association of Fire Chiefs and a charter member of the board of directors of Upper Cleveland County Rescue. He was a member of Fallston Masonic Lodge No. 356 and a former member of Fallston Lions Club. He was a member of the Upper Cleveland Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Cleveland County Board of Adjustment. An avid square dancer, he was a member of the Wagon Wheelers Western Square Dance Club and an organizer of the Carolina Fun Dancers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey Wright and Loy Wright, and one sister, Vatha Fullerton.
He is survived by his wife, Ethelee Smith Wright of the home; one son, Neil Wright of New York City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Tommy Bess and Suzanne and Jimmy Lee, all of Fallston; five granddaughters, Wyndee Bess, Angie Bess, Jaimee Lee, Jennifer Lee and Hayley Wright; and one grandson, Kyle Wright.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eddie Ingram officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park.

A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Samuel and Cora Lee Wilkerson Lowery. He was a retired construction worker. He was a Baptist.
He is survived by one son, Joe Lowery of Sandy Mush; three daughters, Dianne Hoppes of Forest City, Becky Owens of Greenville, S.C., and Paulette Harris of Ellenboro; two brothers, Dewitt Lowery of Bostic and G.B. "Whitey" Lowery of Ellenboro; four sisters, Louise Swink and Bertie Spratt, both of Ellenboro, Ruth Bailey and Doris Henson, both of Forest City; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A native of Rutherford County, she was born Jan. 11, 1930, the daughter of the late John Jasper and Laura Guffey Butler. She was retired from Pee Dee Hosiery of Mount Gilead, where she was a seamstress. She was a member of Mount Moriah United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Pierce White; two brothers, Canie Butler and Eugene Butler; and two sisters, Lonie Hudson and Zonnie Smith.
She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Ricky White of Casar and Ronnie and Terecia White of Troy; seven sisters, Erma Sue White, Jeannette Turner and Mildred McNeilly, all of Casar, Fannie Hoyle of Bostic, Pauline McCurry and Shirley Philbeck, both of Polkville, and Maude Ruppe of Forest City; and one grandson, Ritchie Parsons of Troy.

A native of Cleveland County, she was a former owner of Statesville Avenue Grocery Store. She was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church and of Hymn Choir No. 1.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Beverly and Victor White and Brenda Burris, all of Charlotte; a stepson, Willie Huskey of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Vernice and S.S. Howell of Waco; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Jean Williams of Shelby; an uncle, Leroy Collins of Charlotte; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Baptist Church in Charlotte. Burial will follow at Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens in Charlotte.
