William Jackson
SHELBY - Mr. William Kendrick Jackson, 84, of 706 Annieline Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of York, S.C., he was the son of the late White and Edna Kendrick Jackson. He was a member of Dover Baptist Church. He was retired from Bost Bakery, where he was a sales supervisor.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Hughey Jackson; one son, Richard G. Jackson; and one grandson, Michael Jackson.
He is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, William S. and Loretta Jackson of Shelby, Danny H. and Reiko Jackson of Hampton, Va., and Karen Jackson of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Rachel Strickland of Shelby; a brother, David Jackson of Winter Haven, Fla.; four grandchildren, Chris Jackson, Bryan Jackson, Lisa Jackson and Kelly Upchurch; and six great-grandchildren, Ryan Jackson, Kyle Upchurch, Alex Mossburger, Anna Jackson Jada Upchurch and Mitchell Jackson.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Dover Baptist Church with the Rev. Phil Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family received friends Thursday from 6 to 7:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and will receive friends at other times at the home.

Randall Hewitt
SHELBY - Mr. C. Randall Hewitt, 68, of 1205 Ridgemont Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at his residence.
A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Claude Ruffin and Minnie Nancy Hicks Hewitt. He was a member of Cleveland Masonic Lodge No. 202. He was the owner/operator of Cleveland Pest Control.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Hewitt and Ford Hewitt; and one son, Steven Clarence Hewitt.
He is survived by his wife, Margie Lee McKinney Hewitt of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Patty Hewitt of Lincolnton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Maria and Everette Grigg of Waco and Susan and Stuart Davis of Shelby; one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Helen Hewitt of Asheville; six grandsons, Daniel Grigg, Michael Lovelace II, Taylor Hewitt, Tyler Hewitt, Blake Hewitt and Sammy Davis; three granddaughters, Amy Lovelace, Laura Grigg and Heather Davis; and two great-grandsons, Michael Lovelace III and Cody Lovelace.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Waco Baptist Church with the Revs. Neal Efird and Royce Ballew officiating. Burial will follow at Capernium Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

SHELBY - Mr. Theodore "Ted" McClain, 78, 820 Earl Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Edith Edwards
PLANO, TEXAS - Mrs. Edith Hughes Edwards, 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000.
A native of Rutherford County, she was born on May 20, 1913, the daughter of the late E.B. and Effie Hughes. She was married in 1932 to the late William David Edwards. From 1943 until 1996, she was a resident of Shelby. In 1996, she joined her son and his family in Rowlett, Texas. In 1997, she joined her son in a new home designed and built for her and the other family members in Plano. She was a licensed practical nurse and served many families in the Shelby area.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Jeffrey Neal Edwards, and two sisters, Georgia Raymer and Burene Dedmon.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne B. and Hazel Edwards of Plano; one grandson, Mikel Edwards and his wife, Allyson, of Singapore; and one great-grandson, Dylan Edwards of Singapore.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Rev. Gervase C. Hitch officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.

IRON STATION - Mrs. Almeta Smith Odom Tinsley, 74, 3864 Oakwood Circle, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Lincoln Medical Center.

SHELBY - Mrs. Ella Degree, 101, of 622 N. Post Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at her home.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Pink and Elmira Byrd Bell.
She was a former dietitian in the Shelby City Schools and a farmer.
She was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church and of the Order of The Eastern Star.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Monroe Degree; five daughters, Elmira Sweezy, Ida Degree, Ruby Degree, Ophelia Hartgrove and Eloise Hunt; two brothers, Necoda and Wade Bell; and one sister, Lillie Thompson.
She is survived by two sons, Wilbert Hartgrove and Gaither Hartgrove, both of Shelby; a daughter, Willie Hartgrove of the home; one brother and one sister-in-law, Pink Jr. and Zannie Bell; 24 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren and 70 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Long Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Dixon officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.

James Moore
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. James Edwin Moore, 85, of 309 Oak Grove Road, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late James Madison and Dovie Adams Moore. He was a retired farmer and a substitute rural mail carrier for 50 years. He was a former Cleveland County tax lister. He was a member of the Lions Club for 57 years. He was a member of Patterson Grove Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, where he was a member of the Hugh Falls Sunday school class and served as a deacon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Eva Moore Wilson; and one brother, J. Frank Moore.
He is survived by his wife, Velma Beam Moore of Kings Mountain; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Janice M. and Jesse Putnam of Bessemer City, Grace Phifer of Shelby, Jean and Ray Herndon and Nancy and David Smith, all of Kings Mountain; one brother, Joseph Moore of Sicklerville, N.J.; 10 grandchildren, Andy Putnam and his wife, Jane, Robby Putnam and his wife, Melissa, Mark Herndon and his wife, Debbie, Chris Herndon and his wife, Mary, Lesley Phifer, Michael Smith, Jennifer Smith, Emily Smith, Christopher Smith and Stephen Smith; and six great-grandchildren, Harrison Putnam, Nicholas Putnam, Rachel Putnam, Tyler Herndon, Lindsey Herndon and Claire Herndon.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Patterson Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Terry Bird and Richard Plyler officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

SHELBY - Mr. Franklin Smith Anthony, 71, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Lennis Hardin Gunnells and stepfather O.T. Gunnells.
He was a heavy equipment engineer. He was a member of Blessed Way Baptist Church in Lawndale. He was a Navy veteran, who served in World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Leona Mary Huffstetler Anthony; two sons, Adrian Anthony of Kings Mountain, Wayne Burton of Lake Greenwood, S.C.; one daughter, Deborah Donovan of Grover; a sister, Peggy Gunnells of Shelby; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one special family friend, Robert Gold.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Lutz-Austell Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Cook officiating. Burial will be at Cleveland Memorial Park.

SHELBY - Miss Edna Thelma McSwain, 82, of 401 N. Morgan Street, formerly of Fallston-Waco Road in Shelby, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Cleveland County, she is the daughter of the late Charlie Quinn and Bessie Lankford McSwain.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and its Morning Bible Study Group.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Dwight McSwain and Harlan McSwain, and two sisters, Annie Harrelson and Addie Bingham.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late John Morrow and Della Dover Blalock. She was a homemaker and a member of Westview Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Max William Bowen; one daughter-in-law, Ethel Hamrick Bowen; three brothers, Morris Blalock, Gordon Blalock and Hoyle Blalock; and three sisters, Ethel Bowen, Helen Cobb and Jeanette Padgette.
She is survived by one son, Forrest William Bowen of Escondido, Calif.; one daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Hazel Talent of Shelby; one sister, Marie Blalock Ruppe of Shelby; four grandchildren, Michael William Bowen, Yvonne Cook, Kathy Mistowski and Teresa Valigura; and nine great-grandchildren, Adam Bowen, Aaron Bowen, Cindie Cook, Pamela Cook, Jodi Mistowski, Jennell Mistowski, P.J. Mistowski, Jeff Byand and Jennifer Byand, all of Escondido.
