Lawrence Brown
LAWNDALE - Mr. Lawrence Phillip Brown, 67, of 261 Casar-Belwood Road, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital.
Born Nov. 9, 1932, in Iredell County, he was a son of the late Rodney Lee and Mamie Lillian Spann Brown. He was a retired knitting mechanic.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Peeler Brown of Lawndale,; and two sisters, Dorothy Speece of Union Grove and Mary Brown of Statesville.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ernest W. Speagle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

RUTHERFORDTON - Mrs. Lena Abernathy Alley, 94, of 141 Napa Drive, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at her home.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Temple Church in Spindale, with the Revs. Bill Alley, Jay Price and Joe Terry officiating. Burial will follow in Rutherfordton City Cemetery.

Alda Lookadoo
SHELBY - Mrs. Alda McSwain Lookadoo, 89, of 362 Webb Farm Road, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
Born in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Billy and Ella Mae Bridges McSwain. She was former owner of Lucky's Grill in Swainsville and a retired nursing aide for Cleveland Memorial Hospital. She was a life member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and a member of the Pleasanters, the City Park Senior Group and the Cleveland County Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Lookadoo; two brothers, Loy McSwain and Fay McSwain; a grandson, George Thomas Humphries; and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Lookadoo.
She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Emmett Lookadoo of Miami, Fla., Albert and Barbara Lookadoo and Bruce and Bonnie Lookadoo, all of Shelby; three daughters and sons-in-law, Janice L. and Bill Humphries of Shelby, Lynn L. and David Morrison of Mooresboro and Judy L. and Michael Mauney of Lattimore; 12 grandchildren, Christina H. Hayes, Melinda L. Jones, Ginger L. Peeler, Lori Morrison, Donna M. Hawk, Kim M. Canipe, Brand E. Lookadoo, Brad A. Lookadoo, Traci Lookadoo, Chrystal Gunn, Tina M. Thomas and Derek M. Mauney; and 21 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, with the Revs. Terry Cagle and Andy Oliver officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Evelyn S. Patterson, 85, of 5841 Amity Springs Drive, formerly of Shelby, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
Born July 6, 1914, in York County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late John Henry Sipe and Florence Whitener Sipe. She retired from Lily Mill Co. and was a member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Patterson.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Tony Rayfield of Mooresboro; a sister, Madeline S. Kinlaw of Charlotte; grandchildren, Christy Hollifield and her husband, Rene, Ricky Rudisill and his wife, Susan, and Kathy Bradley; six great-grandsons; a great-granddaughter; a stepgreat-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be tonight at 7 in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gervase Hitch and Rene Hollifield officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home after the service and at other times at the home of her daughter, 232 E. Church St., Mooresboro.

SHELBY - Mr. Beauford Alexander Parker, 77, of 1553 Hilltop Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born on Dec. 23, 1922, the son of the late Vinia Parker Queen. He retired as a truck driver with Carolina Freight after 22 years of service. He was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary T. Hoyle Parker of Shelby; one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Carol Parker of Shelby; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Connie Hoyle and Kenneth and Denise Hoyle, all of Shelby; one brother and sister-in-law, Garland and Hilda Queen of Gaffney, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be tonight at 7:30 in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ron Seigman officiating. Family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at the funeral home. Burial will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Pisgah Baptist Church cemetery.

Velta Langins
SHELBY - Mrs. Velta Ilsters Langins, 74, died on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Hospice at Wendover Heights.
A native of Riga, Latvia, she began studying piano at five years of age. She graduated from the Riga Conservatory of Music, wanting to launch her career as a concert pianist. Her career was interrupted by World War II when she became a slave laborer in a German paper mill in 1944. After the war, she, her mother, the late Lilija Kemmler Ilsters, and her sister were placed in a camp for displaced persons. She gave concerts at the conservatory in Riga, in the camps for displaced persons in Europe, and on the General Stuart, enroute to America in 1949.
She was brought to America in 1949 by the Ascension Lutheran Church of Shelby, where she became the church organist in 1953, a position she held for 43 years. Over the years, she gave concerts and taught piano. In 1993, the members of Ascension Lutheran Church honored Mrs. Langins for her service as organist.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ringolds "Jake" Langins.
She is survived by one sister, Skidret Ilsters Borgeil of Chicago.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church, 300 N. Lafayette St., with the Rev. David Lohr officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.

FUQUAY-VARINA - Mrs. Olivia Goode Heafner, 96, of Windsor Point Nursing Home, formerly of Shelby, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at her residence.
A native of Nebo, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Charles Plato and Rhoda Lillian Webber Goode. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Edwin Heafner.
She is survived by two sons, James Patrick Heafner of Holly Springs and Edwin Zacheus Heafner of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren, Anne Harrison, Emily Dorminey, John Heafner, Mary Farris and Elizabeth Malloy; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary Dorminey, Jack Dorminey and Logan Harrison.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, with Dr. Delores Queen officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday at the cemetery after the graveside service.
