Helen Zink
GREENSBORO - Mrs. Helen Whitener Zink, 87, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital.
A native of South Carolina, she grew up in Shelby, and spent most of her adult life in Greensboro. For the last six years, she has been a resident of Friends Homes West in Greensboro. She was a home economics teacher and counselor at Proximity and Jackson Junior High Schools. She organized and sponsored the National Junior High Honor Society in both schools. She retired in 1974 and was a lifetime member of the N.C. Education Association. She was a member of Glenwood United Methodist Church, where she was a choir director of the young people's and the chancel choirs for 25 years. She was active in numerous committees and the Bill Zink Sunday School class. She was a charter member of the Glenwood Lady Lions, which was organized in 1954, and was voted Lioness of the Year in 1972. She received the Senior Citizen of the Year award for her work at the Crawford Center, Out-Our-Way Garden Club and the Urban Ministry soup kitchen. She served on various committees at Friends Homes West, including helping to develop the Eden project, allowing communal pets in the health care facility.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W.P. Zink; two sisters, Mildred Auman and Louise Hube; and one brother, Fred Whitener.
She is survived by one sister, Elsie Peeler of Shelby; two brothers-in-law, the Rev. James Auman of Greensboro and W.K. Hube Sr. of Raleigh; many nieces, nephews and their families; and her adopted family, Carol and Ben Parke of Greensboro and their daughters, Donna and Amy, and their respective families.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Chapel. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mel-Eden Burch
SHELBY - Mrs. Mel-Eden Allen Burch, 72, formerly of North Morgan Street, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at White Oak Manor in Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Jones and Zula Thomas Humphries Allen. She was retired from M&J Financial and was a member of First Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Grayson Burch, and one brother, Gene A. Allen.
She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Cynthia Burch and Terry Austin of Lenoir and Pamela K. Burch of Shelby; two brothers, Paul A. Allen and John B. Allen, both of Shelby; one sister, Mrs. Roy P. (Corrine) Wilson of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Ashley Champion Greene, Travis G. Champion, Lori Nicole Galloway and Nathan T. Galloway; and two great-grandchildren, Morgan Greene and Madison Greene.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Glenn Davenport officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Ashley Greene, 1013 Cumberland Drive, Shelby.

Marjorie Dixon
HENRIETTA - Mrs. Marjorie Spears Dixon, 74, of 377 Spears Drive, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Essie Dobbins Spears. She was retired from Fieldcrest Mills and was a member of Goode's Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by seven sons, Gene Dixon of the home, Steve Dixon and Pat Dixon of Caroleen, Wayne Dixon and George Dixon of Cliffside, Robert Dixon of Forest City and Calvin Dixon of Mooresboro; two daughters, Dianne Willis of Ellenboro and Brenda Lister of Forest City; one brother, Luther Spears of Henrietta; one sister, Daisy Earls of Henrietta; 23 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside, with the Revs. Steve Hardin and Russell Sellers officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
Robert "Bobby" Bradbury Sr.
ELLENBORO - Mr. Robert "Bobby" Bradbury Sr., 64, of 256 Bradbury Road, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Wednesday at noon at Victory Baptist Church with the Revs. Lee Cosby, B.W. Leach and Jack Pennington officiating. Burial will follow at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.

Leona Neal
SHELBY - Mrs. Leona Smith Neal, 70, of 3017 Longwood Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Thurman H. and Dollie Bridges Smith. She was vice president of Cleveland Poultry Farms from 1973 until 1989 and vice president of Number Three Egg Producers from 1975 until 1995. She was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir and the Friendship Sunday School class, a district mission society representative, Peace Coordinator, a parsonage committee member for a number of years and a past Circle chairperson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Michael Neal.
She is survived by her husband, Tommy Neal of the home; two daughters, Christine Neal Cline of Jacksonville and Patty Neal Dorian of Durham; one granddaughter, Kacy Nichole Cline of Arrapahoe; and two brothers, Milfred Smith of Santa Ana, Calif., and Kenneth Smith of Kings Mountain.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Sharon United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Gary Ferrell and Billy Joe Parker officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Virginia Willis
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Mrs. Virginia Burton Willis, 81, of Lakeshore Heartland Nursing Center in Nashville, formerly of Shelby, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Summitt Medical Center in Nashville.
A native of York County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Floyd Leslie and Bessie Farris Burton. She was retired from Southern Bell after 30 years of service as a telephone operator. She was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church and the Pioneer Workers of America.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Leslie Burton.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Wanda Willis and Norman Tenenbaum of Nashville; one granddaughter, Caroline Burton Tenenbaum of Nashville; two sisters, Ruby Kathryn Keesee of Havie de Grace, Md., and Elizabeth Lee "Betty" Ellis of Greenville, Tenn.; four nephews; and three nieces.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at the chapel at Cleveland Funeral Services with the Rev. George Rolling officiating. Burial will follow Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Cleveland Funeral Services following the funeral service.

Lee Sanders
SHELBY - Mrs. Lee Rebecca Scott Sanders of 224 Chestnut St., died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Home.
A native of Morganton, she was the daughter of the late Will and Ruth Ann Powell Scott. She was a homemaker and a deaconess.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert Sanders.
She is survived by a sister, Zula Renfro of Pineville, S.C.; three daughters, Lillie M. Wilson of the home, Angeline Gaines of Shelby and Jennie Rivers of Gastonia and two sons, Jonah Sanders and Melvin Sanders, both of Shelby.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Voice of Hope S.D.A. with Elder Justin Reid officiating. Burial will be at Webb Memorial.
The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. Sunday at Voice of Hope S.D.A., and other times at the home of Lillie Wilson at 224 Chestnut St., Shelby.

Ted Borders
SHELBY - Mr. Ted Ray Borders, 63, of 821 E. Main St., died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at his residence.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late John Osborne and Ruth Hunt Borders. He was a self-employed brick mason and a member of Christopher Road Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in Germany and the United States.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Deaton Bridges of the home; three daughters and one son-in-law, Angie and Leonard Langworthy of Lawndale and Dana Borders and Loni Clark, both of the home; three sons and one daughter-in-law, David and Kim Borders of Charlotte and Daniel and Johnny, both of the home; one stepson, Danny Clark of Shelby; one sister and brother-in-law, Marlene and Haskell Bell of Shelby; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2:30 at Christopher Road Baptist Church, with the Rev. Thomas Jake Gales officiating. The body will be placed in the church from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the church, and at other times at the home.

Aarlivia Early
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Aarlivia Smith Early, 87, of 510 Landwood Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Jimmy and Lindy Smith. She retired from Douglas International Airport in 1977 and was a member and mother of The Greater Mount Zion F.B.H. Church in Charlotte.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Willie Early, and one son, Leroy Early.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-laws, the Rev. Eugene Sr. and Willie Mae Early of Shelby, and Joe and Helen Early of Charlotte; five daughters and four sons-in-laws, Ella Evans of Patterson, N.J., Margie Parks, Louise and Carlos Evertez, Shirley and Sam Smith and Janet and Chris Phronebarger, all of Charlotte; one sister, Nerva Jane Brown of Shelby; 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grand children; 47 great-great-grandchildren and five great-great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at The Greater Mount Zion F.B.H. Church in Charlotte, with the Rev. Lester Powell officiating. Burial will follow at York Memorial Park in Charlotte.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Ethel McMurry
SHELBY - Mrs. Ethel Blanton McMurry, 98, of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Zeb V. and Ollie Jarrett Blanton Sr. She was retired from Ora Mill Co. She was the oldest member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and a member of W.M.U., Ruth Sunday School class, Joy Group and a Bible study group.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J.P. McMurry Sr.; three sons, Palmer McMurry Jr., Harrill McMurry and Tom McMurry; and one daughter, Murriel Bridges.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Keever Lovelace of Shelby; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Vonnie McMurry of Polk City, Fla.; three brothers, W. Howard Blanton, Zeb V. Blanton Jr. and Gene Blanton, all of Shelby; one sister, Beatrice B. Beam of Shelby; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ken Pruitt and Dr. Paul Sorrells officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
