MOORESBORO - Mrs. Linara Hamrick Philbeck, 92, of 3453 Belaire Road, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000 at Cleveland Pines.
A native of Cleveland County, she was preceded in death by her parents, Arboth W. and Leah Jolley Hamrick. She was a homemaker and the oldest member of Sandy Run Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo E. Philbeck; a daughter, Colleen P. Bridges; a brother, Broadus F. Hamrick; a sister, Odenia H. Goforth; and a son-in-law, Zeb V. Daves.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ross and Madge Philbeck of Mooresboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Selma and G.G. (Tom) Bess of Mooresboro; a son-in-law, John Bridges of Mooresboro; a sister-in-law, Virginia Hamrick of Long Beach; four grandchildren, Ted M. Daves, Stan Philbeck, Bruce and Jackie Bridges, and Vance Bridges; three great-grandchildren, Alecia Daves Johnson, Andy Bridges and Callie Bridges; five sisters, Ola H. Blanton of Gastonia, Nellie H. Peeler of Forest City, Mildred H. Davis of Shelby, Lois H. Clark of Bently, Alberta, Canada, and Mable H. Whisnant of Newton.
The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. today at Sandy Run Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tim Hendrick officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family received friends Monday at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.

LINCOLNTON - Mr. Thomas "Tom" Proctor, 57, of 1585 Old Lake Road, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at his home.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Living Word Tabernacle, with the Rev. Tim Humes officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery.

William Whisnant
SHELBY - Mr. William Bernard Whisnant, 36, of 1810 Quail Run Drive, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at Britthaven of Morganton.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born May 25, 1963, the son of Annie Thurman Whisnant of Lawndale and the late William George (Bud) Whisnant. He was employed by Metrolina Plastics Inc. and a member of Palmer Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Denise Parks Whisnant; one son, LaQuintay Bernard Whisnant; one daughter, Alicia Neshea Whisnant, all of the home; three brothers, Larry Thurman of Lawndale, Bruce Whisnant and Tony Whisnant, both of Shelby; four sisters, Lois Woods of Polkville, Renee Watkins and Lora Thurman of Lawndale, and Chella Whisnant of Shelby; his mother-in-law, Virginia Parks of Lawndale; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The funeral will be at Palmer Grove Baptist Church on Wednesday at 2 pm. The family will observe quiet hours from 1 to 2 at the church. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery, with the Rev. J. L. Smith officiating.

Pearl Philbeck McKee Scruggs Costner
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Pearl Philbeck McKee Scruggs Costner, 90, formerly of Polkville and Rutherford County, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at the home of a daughter.
A native of Polk County, she was the second of twelve children of the late Claude and Dorcus Stockton Philbeck. She was a mother, homemaker and a member of Polkville Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lawerence McKee; her second husband, Lonzie Burton Scruggs; her third husband, Clete Costner; two sons, Harold Scruggs and C.B. Scruggs; and a step-son, the Rev. L.D. Scruggs.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lewis and Amanda Scruggs of Lawndale and Billy and Susie Scruggs of Grover; three daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Howard Sigmnon and Annie Sue and James Greene, all of Polkville, and Etta Mae and Brannon Turner of Caroleen; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Polkville Baptist Church with the Revs. Alton Martin and Glenn Walker officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Bessie Kate Cash Hamilton, 77, of 398 Seitz Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Crowe's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Alfred Mapp officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mountain View Baptist Church cemetery.

James 'Jim' Sills Sr.
SHELBY - Mr. James Robert "Jim" Sills Sr., 87, of 322-3 Patton Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Gaston County, he was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Ocie Falls Sills. He was retired from Dover Textiles and Baxter Corp. He was a member of Dover Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Coy Sills.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Dillard Sills, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, James R. Jr. and Judy Sills of Burlington; a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Jerry McClellan of Shelby; a granddaughter, Tami McClellan of Shelby; two grandsons, Phil McClellan Sr. of Shelby and Jeff Sills of Knoxville, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, Treka McClellan, Phillip McClellan and Morgan Sills; a brother, J.P. Sills of Kannapolis; and four sisters, Jeanette McCommons, Inell Sills and Ruby Brown, all of Kannapolis, and Mary Davis of Charlotte.

Floyd Cook
SHELBY - Mr. Floyd Eugene Cook, 69, of 505 Cherryville Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late S.J. "Junie" and Ruby Nix Cook. He was a retired warehouse foreman at Hoescht Celanese. He was an active member of Shelby Missionary Methodist Church, where he had served as steward, music director and Sunday school teacher.
He was a member of the 1945 National Champion American Legion Baseball team, whose members will serve as honorary pallbearers.
He was a volunteer with the Council on Aging as the co-director of Singing for Fun for almost 20 years and recently conducted a musical ministry in nursing homes throughout Cleveland, Lincoln, Gaston and Rutherford counties. He also served in the Army.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ambrose "Ham" Cook.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Cash Cook of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle Cook and Roger Gadd of Concord and Melia Cook and Patrick Lutz of Shelby; two step-daughters, Jeannie Renee Marks of Asheville and Andrea Nicole Wyatt of Crouse; a sister-in-law, Kitty Cook of Shelby; two aunts, Lola Blanton of Shelby and Mildred Pruitt of York, S.C.; six grandchildren, Blair, Hillary and Will Lutz and Ross, Madeline and Oliver Gadd; and two step-grandchildren, Casey and Preston Marks.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Shelby Missionary Methodist Church with the Revs. Alan Kniceley, Richard Prendergrast and Norman Jacobs officiating.

A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late L.C. and Carrie Lee Rhoades Debrew. She was a homemaker and a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd H. Anthony; a daughter, Hilda Aileen Anthony Wright; two brothers, James Debrew and Howard Debrew; and two sisters, Mae Debrew and Edith Hamrick.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Billie Sue and Carol Wright of Shelby and Carrie Ann and Carroll Propst of Dallas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Dean and Sarah Anthony and Boyd H. Jr. and Barbara Anthony, all of Shelby; 13 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 7:30 tonight at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Dr. James Richardson and the Rev. Stanley Webb officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Howard Peeler
LAWNDALE - Mr. Howard A. Peeler, 93, of 879 Oak-Grove-Clover Hill Church Road, died Thursday, Mar. 2, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late H.E. and Elsie Kennedy Peeler. He was a self-employed farmer and carpenter. He was a member of Casar Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Beulah Wilson Peeler, three sisters, Pearl Ivester, Oland Grigg and Georgia Lee Powell and two grandchildren, Susan and Ray Gamble.
He is survived by three daughter and sons-in-law, Dorothy "Dot" and W.C. Wehunt of Lincolnton, Pat and Bill Hastings of Lawndale and Shirley and David Gamble of Shelby; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Casar Baptist Church, with the Rev. Fred Mauney officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

MOORESBORO - Mrs. Sarah Emma Brock Fenescey, 96, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
A native of Sayer, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Sadie Mickel Brock. She was a homemaker, a lifetime member of Bartonville Grange, and attended Putnam Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel A. Fenescey, and her son, Roy James Fenescey.
She is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law, Aubrey C. and Ann Fenescey of Bonnell, Fla.; a daughter, Beverly Chloe Jackson of Mooresboro; 16 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lutz-Austell Chapel, with the Rev. Larry Morris officiating.
The body will be placed in the chapel 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will be in Windsor, N.Y. at a later date.
