Verna Joyner
SHELBY - Mrs. Verna Elmore Joyner, 92, of 717 Ridgeview Drive, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Decatur and Tallulah Warlick Elmore. A homemaker, she was a member of Central United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women.
After graduating from Piedmont High School, she attended Greensboro College.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ira Elmore and Johnny Elmore; and two sisters, Mae Elmore Abernethy and Ethel Elmore Hartigan.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Carlos "Jack" Wilson Joyner; a daughter and son-in-law, Claudia Abernethy and Jim Lutz of Shelby; a brother, Bob Elmore of Shelby; two sisters, Anne E. Falls of Shelby and Ruth E. Balentine of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Lutz Bridges and her husband, Reid, of Shelby and Will Lutz and his wife, Julie, of Raleigh; and two great-grandchildren, Emily Bridges and Nancy Bridges.
The funeral is today at 2 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Carl Johnson and Dr. Joe Reeves officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery.
The family received friends Sunday afternoon. At other times, they are at the home, 717 Ridgeview Drive, Shelby.
Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 200 East Marion St., Shelby, N.C. 28150, or to the charity of the donor's choice..

Hester Bridges
CRAMERTON - Mrs. Hester Lee Bridges Bridges, 77, of 98 Sixth St., died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Born in Gaston County Aug. 5, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Sr. and Nannie Lou Adams Bridges. She retired as owner of Hester's Beauty Shop. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Floyd Bridges Sr.; four brothers, David Bridges, Eugene Bridges, Howard Bridges and Grover Bridges; and a sister, Inez Jarvis.
Survivors include a son, Herman "Buddy" Bridges and his wife, Shirley, of Cherryville; a daughter, Meritha Brown and her husband, Lloyd, of Cramerton; four sisters, Beatrice Parton and Irene Tennant of Cramerton, Zelma Hay of Cherryville and Billie Tessenar of Belmont; a brother, Jack Bridges of Cramerton; three grandchildren, Randy Brown and his wife, Nicole, of Belmont, Jayme Bridges of Charleston, S.C., and Trey Bridges of Shelby.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Riverside Baptist Church, with the Revs. Allan Lefler, Clarence Morris Sr. and Danny Jarvis officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be at Gaston Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia and at other times at the home.

William Guthrie
SHELBY - Mr. William Thomas Guthrie, 86, of 334 Grice St., died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late William Robert and Frances Melvina Russom Guthrie. He retired as a supervisor for J.P. Stevens Co., where he worked from 1946 to 1970. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He served in the Marines during World War II, was stationed in Hawaii and Japan and was discharged Jan. 14, 1946.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Mauney Guthrie; a daughter, Mary G. Smith; three sisters, Rosa Guthrie, Lillian G. Hines and Frances G. Blanton; and three brothers, Jesse J. Guthrie, Robert N. Guthrie and Oscar Guthrie.
He is survived by a daughter, Ruth Guthrie Champion, and her husband, Bill, of Shelby; a sister, Dola G. Hollifield of Merritt Island, Fla.; two grandsons, Philip T. Champion of Shelby and Steve Smith of Wellford, S.C.; two granddaughters and their husbands, Julie C. and Stan Lowery and Ellen C. and Butch Hendrick; three great-grandsons, Philip T. Champion Jr., Douglas Lowery and Doyle Hendrick; five great-granddaughters, Catherine Lowery, Jennifer Lowery, Jessica Lowery, Ashley Hendrick and Laura Hendrick, all of Shelby; and a great-nephew, Clifford E. Harrison Jr., serving with the U.S. Air Force in England.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dan Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services, and at other times at 930 Eastview St., Shelby.
Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 320 Old Boiling Springs Road, Shelby, N.C. 28152, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. David Gardner, 75, of 368 Mary's Grove Church Road, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.

Nancy Lutz
SHELBY - Mrs. Nancy Gray Coble Lutz, 84, of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at her home.
Born in Bessemer City, she was a daughter of the late Charles Columbus and Gladys Adelaide Gray Coble. She was a homemaker, a member of the Shelby Mothers Club and volunteered as a Pink Lady for Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for preschool children.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Coble Connor and Betty Coble Clark.
She is survived by her husband, John Franklin Lutz; a son and daughter-in-law, John F. Jr. and Katherine Lutz of Gaffney, S.C.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ann Gray and Charlie Harry III of Shelby, the Rev. Susan Allred and her husband, Herb, of Chapel Hill and Nancy "Gennie" and David Carpenter of Boiling Springs; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Robin Harry and Loyd "Kip" Smith, Scott Harry and his wife, Elizabeth Ellis, Benjamin Allred and his wife, Jennifer, Jason Allred, Jennifer Carpenter Christensen, David Carpenter III, Meredith Lutz, Alex Lutz and his wife, Michelle, Joshua Lutz and Haley Lutz; and nine great-grandchildren, Baxter Smith, Wesley Smith, Elizabeth Harry, Bishop Harry, Nanci Christensen, Nicholas Carpenter, Courtney Lutz, Kayla Lutz and Clayton Lutz.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Carl Johnson and Dr. Joe Reeves officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Charlie and Ann Harry, 149 Lakemont Drive, Shelby.

Lawrence Valentine
SHELBY - Mr. W. Lawrence Valentine, 80, of 907 Lake Drive, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Born in Causby, Tenn., he was a son of the late Daniel Henderson and Effie McKinney Valentine. He retired as a weaver with Shelby Mill and was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Camilla Wortman Valentine; a brother, Orie Valentine; and five sisters, Gertie Smith, Hazel Hale, Zola Starnes, Ressie Adams and Cleta Valentine.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Norman "Bud" and Madeleine Valentine of Kannapolis and Jack and Mary Hellen Starnes of Natchitoches, La.; a daughter and son-in-law, Vickie V. and Bob Jones of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Lonus E. and Janie Valentine of Shelby; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Lori and Jeff Barbour of Newton, Tammy and Eric West of Taylorsville, Melanie and David Adcock of Charlotte, Kimberly Jones and Bobbi Jones of Shelby, Jeff Starnes of Florida and Kelli Starnes of Natchitoches; and two great-grandchildren, Robert West of Taylorsville and Grant Adcock of Charlotte.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Lohr officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Cleveland Funeral Services and at other times at the home of Bob and Vickie Jones, 1302 Gilbert St., Shelby.

Vinnie Hardin
GROVER - Mrs. Vinnie Beam Hardin, 96, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Monroe and Mollie Browne Beam. She retired from Hardin Grocers and was a member of Mount Paran Baptist Church in Blacksburg, S.C.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vassuer J. Hardin, and a daughter, Betty Hardin Link.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Betty Hardin of Shelby and William and Catherine Hardin of Lincolnton; a daughter, Martha Sue Parker of Charlotte; a brother, Broadus Beam of Blacksburg; two sisters, Margaret Neely of Grover and Mary Lou Nichols of Shelby; seven grandchildren, James M. Hardin Jr., William B. Hardin, David J. Hardin, Barbara Gregory, Jacki Brown, W. Timothy Parker Jr. and Jeffrey A. Parker; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Grover Cemetery, with the Rev. Ron Getty officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain.

SHELBY - Mr. John "J.A." Hubbard, 85, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Pauline Dellinger
CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Pauline Yoder Tunmire Dellinger, 73, of 2761 Johnstown Road, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Lincoln County, she was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Beulah Ballard Yoder. She retired after 41 years of service with Carlton Yarn Mill, where she worked as a winder/spinner. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and a 1943 graduate of Lincolnton High School.
She is survived by her husband, C. Roy Dellinger of the home; a daughter, Julia Ann Neal of Cherryville; a granddaughter, Annie Neal of Cherryville; a brother, Robert "Bud" Yoder of Lincolnton; an uncle, Walter E. "Buck" Ballard of Lincolnton; a nephew, Dennis Yoder of Bessemer City; and a niece, Betty Scronce of Crouse.
The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with the Revs. Wayne Key and Kenneth Gibson officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Carpenter's Funeral Home.

Pauline Kale
SHELBY - Mrs. Pauline Bell Kale, 83, of 701 Royster Ave., died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Lakeview Living Center in Pineville.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was preceded in death by her parents, John Felix and Margaret Bernice Mintz Bell. She was retired from Shelby Mill and was a member of Second Baptist Church. She was a past president of Shelby Senior Citizens and a former Pink Lady at Cleveland Memorial Hospital.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Ted Warren Kale Sr.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ted Warren Jr. and Sheila Kale of Charlotte; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Dean Allen of Rock Hill, S.C.; a brother, Francis Bell of Roseburg, Ore.; five grandchildren, Dr. Jeff Allen of Atlanta, Sharon A. Templeton of York, S.C., Deborah Allen of Rock Hill, S.C., Lisa Dyan Kale of Monroe, and Christopher Lane Kale of Charlotte; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren Hunter, Easton Templeton and Colte Templeton.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Clay-Barnette Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Jirgal officiating.
Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Edward Lattimore
ELLENBORO - Mr. Edward "Ed" Lattimore, 81, of 297 Webb Church Road, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Margaret R. Pardee Memorial in Hendersonville.
A native of Gaffney, S.C., he was the son of the late Norton and Vada Ross Lattimore. He was a retired farmer and breeder. He was a member of Webb Church of Ellenboro.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lula Mae Hunt Lattimore; one son, Morgan Lattimore of Ellenboro; a daughter, Ms. Christine Lattimore of Ellenboro; a brother, Lester Lattimore of Newark, N.J.; a sister, Mrs. Rose Morgan of Morganton; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Webb Church in Ellenboro, with the Rev. Leroy Staley officiating. Burial will follow at Brooks Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday an hour before the service at the church.
Dockery's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John "J.A." Hubbard
SHELBY - Mr. John Ambrose "J.A." Hubbard, 85, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Noah and Docia Peeler Hubbard. He was a former president of Bowen and Hubbard Grading Co., a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, where he served on many committees and a former member of the V.F.W.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruby Dellinger Hubbard; a son and daughter-in-law, John Michael and Karen Hubbard of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and David Wray of Wilmington; two brothers, Robert Hubbard and Eugene Hubbard of Belwood; three sisters, Katherine Bowen of Shelby, Eunice Walters of Lothian, Md., and Tommie Sain of Lawndale; three grandchildren, Nicole Wray of Brigantine, N.J., Heather Wray Huberty and her husband, Paul, of Oxford, Pa., and Keely Wray Hesmer and her husband, Taylor, of Wilson; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Huberty and Haley Huberty of Oxford.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Lohr officiating. Burial will be at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Cherryville.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Rosia Martin
CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Rosia Earwood Martin, 84, formerly of Highway 182 North Brook, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Carolina Care Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late John Nailer and Mary Pailly Earwood. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Jackson Martin.
She is survived by nine sons, John W. Martin and Jerry W. Martin, both of Birmingham, Ala., Joe W. Martin, Frank E. Martin and Steve J. Martin, all of Cherryville, Harold Dean Martin of Stanley, David F. Martin of Hickory, Ronnie D. Martin of Crouse and Henry "Tom" Thomas Martin of North Brook; two daughters, Mary A. Champion and Dorothy Ann Carter, both of Shelby; a brother, Joe Earwood of Gastonia; three sisters, Ellen E. Jones of Shelby and Maudie Pace and Mattie Lee Ledford, both of Charlotte; 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, with the Revs. John Stein and Cecil Buff officiating. The body will be placed in the church a half hour before the service.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston.

Joe Riddle
FOREST CITY - Mr. Joe B. Riddle, 80, of Forest Hills Avenue, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at White Oak Nursing Center.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by The Padgett and King Mortuary.

Evelyn Hopper
FORT WORTH, Texas - Mrs. Evelyn Hopper, 74, formerly of Corpus Christi, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at her residence.
A native of Asheville, she was retired from Corpus Christi State National Bank, where she served as assistant vice-president.
She is survived by her husband, Charles M. Hopper of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles M. Jr. and Robin Hopper of Fort Worth, Texas, and David L. Hopper of Houston; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be today at 10 a.m. at Laurel Land Memorial Park.
Laurel Land Funeral Home of Fort Worth is in charge of arrangements.
