Max Whisnant
LAWNDALE - Mr. Max Whisnant, 78, of 1338 Union Church Road, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Bruce and Nettie Warlick Whisnant.
He was a retired carpenter and was a member of Polkville United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army WWII receiving a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters, a Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, an American Theatric Ribbon, a World War Victory Medal and was wounded at Marshall Island and at Sipan.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by four brothers, Foch Whisnant, Dave Whisnant, Boyd Whisnant and Dewey Whisnant and four sisters, Kathleen Bridges, Mary Sue Johnson, Goldie Friant and Dorcas Cornwell.
He is survived by one brothers, Albert Whisnant of Polkville and three sisters, Mrs. Clevie Spangler of Lawndale, Mrs. Fern Willis of Belwood and Mrs. Margaret Queen of Polkville.
A graveside service with full military honors will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Polkville United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Owenby officiating. The body will be placed at the grave site 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family will receive friends after the service.

ELLENBORO - Mr. Martin Burtwell Hamrick, 61, of 930 Tiney Road, died Friday, March 17, 2000, at his home.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Masters officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Ora Singleton
SHELBY - Mrs. Ora Grigg Singleton, 88, of 1647 Mooresboro Road, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late George Hillard and Bessie Mae Philbeck Grigg. She was retired from Lily Mill Company after 35 years of service. She was a member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, E.J. Singleton; a brother, Paul Grigg; and a sister, Dorcas McKee.
She is survived by her sisters, Corene Greene of Shelby and Ruth McKee of Lawndale; a niece and her husband, Joan and Hal Grigg of Shelby; a nephew and his wife, Dayne and Dot Grigg of Shelby; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Rehobeth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mary Carnes officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5:30 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Joan and Hal Grigg, 3508 Red Sun Road, Shelby.

RUTHERFORDTON - Mr. Kenny Dean McMurry, 26, of 107 Grace St., died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at his home.

Roosevelt Hill Sr.
SHELBY - Mr. Theodore Roosevelt Hill Sr., 65, of 1332 Frederick Street, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Eliza Nickels Hill. He was a member of Lawndale First Baptist Church, where he served on the kitchen committee. He was retired from the Chrysler Corp. after 34 years of service. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union and the Welcome Star Masonic Lodge No. 78.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Christopher Hill, James Hill, Jeff Hill Jr., and Johnny Hill; and four sisters, Eula, Beatrice, Willie and Kathleen.
He is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Ann Gingles of Shelby, Harriet and Edwin Green of Washington, Ind., Pamela and Terry Spearman of Humboldt, Tenn. and Rhonda and Edward Johnson of Evansville, Ind.; three sons and a daughter-in-law, James Weaver of Norcrosse, Ga., Eddie and Beatrice Houi and Theodore Hill Jr., all of Rockford, Ill.; four sisters, Luella Hill of Cleveland, Ohio, Mildred Spann, Elois Williams and Christine Haynes, all of Shelby; a cousin, Issac Hill; 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Lawndale First Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy D. Houze officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

CHERRYVILLE - Miss Virginia "Nell" Whitworth, 88, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at Century Care Nursing Home.
A native of Cleveland County, she was one of the oldest members of Waco Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, W.C. and Prue Harrelson Whitworth; brothers Boyd Whitworth, Otis Whitworth and Max Whitworth; sisters Blanche W. Bess, Melba W. Eades, Neva W. Jenks, and Mildred W. Bost.
A graveside service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Capernaum Cemetery in Waco, with the Rev. Royce Ballew officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Lee Houser; parents, Troy and Essie Proctor Lackey; brother Hillard Lackey; and sister Altha Lansing.

Isaiah Deck
SHELBY - Mr. Isaiah Haggi Deck, 73, of 502 Monroe St., died Friday, March 17, 2000, at Howard University Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
A native of Union Mills, he was born on Jan. 14, 1927, the son of the late William Benjamin and Alice Crews Deck. He retired from Southern Bell after 20 years of service. He was also employed as a property clerk with the New York Police Department. He was a member of Ryburn Memorial Presbyterian Church and Pride of the West, No. 193 Masonic Lodge, United Supreme Council 33 degree of Prince Hall Lodge and Shiloh Lodge No. 4 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a private in the Army and a World War II veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bernetha Johnson Deck; two brothers, Hezakiah Deck and David W. Deck; and one sister, Ophelia Evans.
He is survived by one son, William B. Deck of Greenville, S.C.; three daughters, Alice Deck of Urbana, Ill., Barbara Deck of Suitland, Md., and Ava Davis of Pelzer, S.C.; one brother, James Deck of Lakewood, N.J.; two sisters, Essie Twitty of Union Mills and Mary King of Bronx, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Ryburn Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert Meachem officiating. The body may be viewed starting Tuesday at noon at Enloe's Mortuary. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Cemetery.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Mrs. Betty Jean Camp Wood, 75, of Eastside Community, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at her son's residence.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late D. G. and Lillie Hopper Camp. She was employed with United Way as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Spartanburg.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude W. Camp.
She is survived by one son, the Rev. Mike Wood of Cowpens, S.C.; one daughter, Gena Lynn Grigg of Spartanburg; two sisters, Joan Ellis and Helen Joy Long, both of Shelby; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Lanford-Pollard Funeral Home in Spartanburg with the Revs. Gerald Burnette and Mike Wood officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park in Shelby.
