Frances Vassey
SHELBY - Mrs. Frances Burkhalter Vassey, 71, of 3925 Vassey Road, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at her home.
A native of Orlando, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Peter P. Burkhalter and Ethel Burkhalter Cheatwood. She was a homemaker and a volunteer at the Senior Center.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred "Red" Vassey; one brother, Carl Burkhalter; and one sister, Melba Perry.
She is survived by two sons, Charles Milton Vassey of Mooresboro and Harold Lee Vassey of Lattimore; one daughter, Shelia Vassey Houser of Lincolnton, Ore.; ten grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be today at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park with the Revs. Broadus and Edith Heatherly officiating.
The family will be at the home of Charles Vassey, 230 N.C. Highway 120, Mooresboro.

"J.D." Oates Sr.
SHELBY - Mr. James "J.D." Oates Sr., 78, of 525 Antrum St., died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born on Aug. 25, 1921, the son of the late Henry and Susie Ann Patterson Oates. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Hope Well Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son, James Oates Jr. of Plainfield, N.J.; two daughters, Dianne Oates of Augusta and Ruby Oates of Newark; three sisters, Lena Oates Petty of Duquesne, Pa., Cleola Oates Hoyle of Shelby and Jennie Oates Hozier of Buffalo; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Samuel Raper officiating.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and other times at the home of a sister, Ms. Cleola Hoyle, 508 Bonney St., Shelby.

Alma Dwin Dockery
MORRISTOWN, Tenn.- Mrs. Alma Dwin Dockery, 88, died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Hospital.
A native of Morristown, she was the daughter of the late Tobe Frank and Mamie Goins Dwin.
She attended Morristown Normal & Industrial College in Morristown. A Cleveland County Head Start advocate, she was active in the Cleveland County Mental Health Association, a member of Durham United Methodist Church, Durham United Methodist Women, Shelby Negro Women's Club, the Book Club, and a charter member of the Bridgette Club and the Piedmont Chapter of the Links Incorporated of America. She also taught school in Cleveland County for a number of years.
She is survived by her husband, Carl J. Dockery of Shelby; three sons, Carl J. "Chloe'" Dockery of Shelby, Charles D. "Lea" Dockery of Davidson, and Paul E. "Gilda" Dockery of Charlotte; eight grandchildren, Carl Dockery III of Shelby, Rosanna Dockery of Greensboro, Frederick Dockery of Charleston, S.C., Natasha Dockery of Chapel Hill, Carmen Dockery of New York, Paula Dockery of Charlotte, Melanie Dockery of the Bahamas, and Joey Dockery of Charlotte; three great-grandchildren, Takeeley Dockery of Shelby, Carlile Dockery and Charles Evans Dockery, both of Charleston, S.C.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Durham United Methodist Church and a quiet hour will be held an hour before the service.

CHERRYVILLE - Mr. John Russell Eaker, 88, of 5665 Cohn Eaker Road, died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at Lincoln Medical Center.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Stien and Dr. Tom Rogers officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Mrs. Verlie Glasco Wellmon, 85, of Wesley Woods Retirement Community, died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at her residence.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late William and Renee Wright Glasco. She was retired from the Dover Mill Group and was a member of First Baptist Church of Shelby.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Theodore Wellmon; a son, Dicky Theodore Wellmon; three brothers, O.C. Glasco, Broadus Glasco, and Henry D. Glasco; and two sisters, Ora Crawley and Dovie Lennie Grigg.
She is survived by a son, William Jimmy Wellmon of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Patricia W. Hatcher of Starke, Fla.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Russell Fitts officiating.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at Stamey Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

SHELBY - Mr. Murry Clay Dear, 74, of 1241 Airport Road, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
A native of DeRidder, La., he was the son of the late Gus and Beaulah Dear. He was a retired Sergeant of the Air Force and served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Dear.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel White Dear of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, David and JoAn Dear of Shelby, Don and Jane Dear of Tega Cay, S.C., and Ronnie Dear of Shelby; three brothers, B.L. Dear and Roy Dear, both of DeRidder, La., and Arthur Dear of Louisville, Ky.; three sisters, Irene Cole of Pitkin, La., Earlene Hutchinson of Groves, Texas, and Sue McDonald of Kerrville, Texas; and four grandchildren, Christine Dear, Ashley Dear, Zachary Dear, and Megan Dear.
A graveside service with full military honors will be Thursday at 3:15 p.m. in the Elizabeth Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Terry Jordan officiating.

KINGSTOWN - Mr. Jack Matthew Jennings, 88, of 1509 Williamson Road, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at his home.
A native of Chesnee, S.C., he was the son of the late Martha Posey Jennings. He was employed at Brackett Construction Company as a carpenter for over thirty years.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maggie Finney Jennings; one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Eva Jennings of Kingstown; one daughter, Jessie Mae Alston of Philadelphia; one sister, Amanda Hoey of Shelby; two grandchildren, Joyce Hester of Philadelphia and Christopher Alston of Cherryville; two great-granddaughters, Jessica Jennings of Charlotte and Clarissa Jennings of Shelby; and one great-great granddaughter, McKayla Jennings of Shelby.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Pentecostal Apostolic Church of Christ with the Bishop W.A. Mitchell officiating.
Burial will follow at Bethlehem Temple Church Cemetery.

ELLENBORO - Mrs. Fannie Morehead Butler, 86, of 254 Edley Toney Road, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at Woodlands Nursing Center of Rutherfordton.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Minnie Johnson Morehead. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her paernts, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Walter Butler.
She is survived by one son, Clyde Butler of Hazelhurst, Ga.; three daughters, Marjorie Toney of Newton, Gail Walker of Chesnee, S.C., and Carol Davis of Ellenboro; one brother, John C. Morehead of Bostic; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Burial will follow at Walls Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Darwin "Doc" and Clara Wright Etters. She was retired from Bonnie Mills and a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Ralph Mitcham.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda M. and Charles Dover of Kings Mountain; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Charles R. and Stephanie Dover of Kings Mountain; three great-grandchildren, Karla, Jessie, and Robert, all of Kings Mountain.

Eugenia "Gene" Young
SHELBY - Mrs. Eugenia Lee "Gene" Harrill Young, 79, of 78 Fairview Farms, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born September 8, 1920 in Bostic, she was the daughter of the late G. Bryan and Judie Davis Harrill. She was a graduate of Cool Springs High School at the age of 15 and worked for the Rutherford County Department of Social Services until her marriage in 1941 to Lamar Lewis Young Sr. She was a member of Shelby Presbyterain Church, a sustaining member of the Junior Charity League, a supporter of the Friends of the Library, and a Master Swimmer. She was honored as the 1977 North Carolina Mother of the Year.
She is survived by her husband Lamar "Buddy" Young; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Dr. Lamar L. Jr. and Kay Young, William C. and Susan Young, Dr. D. Bryan and Jane Young, and Dr. Eugene F. Young, all of Shelby and Dr. Michael H. and Ann Young of Asheville; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Eugenia Lee and Michael F. Holman of Shelby and Judie Y. and Dr. Rick Davidson of Gainesville, Fla.; seven grandsons and one granddaugther-in-law, Dr. Brenton Lewis Young, Joseph Harand Young, William Davis Young and Glenn Sperling Young, all of Shelby, Michael Yaeger Young of Asheville, Sidney Alan Davidson of Gainesville, Fla. and Dr. Frank Kevin and Liz Young of Macon, Ga.; five granddaughters, Eugenia Lee Holman, McCall Elizabeth Holman and Nina Lewis Holman, all of Shelby, Rachael Ann Young of Asheville and Margaret Lee Davidson of Gainesville, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Joshua Ryan Young and Benjamin Reid Young, both of Shelby and Grace Cooper Young, Paul Garrett Young, and Adam Beauvais Young, all of Macon, Ga.; and a brother, William C. Harrill of Forest City.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church with Dr. Luke Harkey and the Rev. George Rolling officiating.
