SCOTTY CROCKER II
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Scotty Wayne Crocker II, 15, of 181 Crown Court, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
He was the son of Annette and Scotty Wayne Crocker I.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by four brothers James Adams and Javis Adams, both of Kings Mountain, Johnta Mintz of Gastonia and Jevon Collins of Cherwan, S.C.; one sister Lennay Collins of Cherwan; and one daughter T'nasia Crocker of Ohio.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Vestibule AME Zion Church in Kings Mountain, with the Rev. Clarence Wright officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Marie Towery
VALDESE - Mrs. Marie Chapman Towery, 79, of College Pines Nursing Center, formerly of Connelly Springs, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at the nursing center.
A native of Burke County, she was born on Sept. 6, 1920. She was a member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Sarah Lail Chapman; her husband, Otis Lee Towery; one son Alvin Towery; three brothers Lester Chapman, James Chapman and John Chapman; and one sister Minnie Chapman Smith.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law Bobby Olon and Charlene Towery of Lawndale; one daughter and son-in-law Mozelle Towery and John Shimpock of Connelly Springs; two brothers Earl Chapman and Parksie Chapman, both of Connelly Springs; three grandchildren, Michelle Towery, Brian Towery and Marisa Harmon and her husband, Steve; two great-grandchildren Nicole Harmon and Alex Harmon.
The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. at Mount Gilead Baptist Church, with the Revs. Keith Fulbright and Billy Mace officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family received friends Saturday at Sossoman Funeral Home and other times at the home of John and Mozelle Shimpock, 3969 Mount Gilead Church Road, Connelly Springs.

SHELBY - Mr. John Wayne Newton, 59, of 5309 Spring Lane, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

ELLENBORO - Mr. Gene Thomas Toney, 59, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.

"Bill" Pearson
SHELBY - Mr. William "Bill" Rudolph Pearson, 83, of 505 Davis Road, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Watauga County, he was retired after 17 years as a salesman at Sears & Roebuck Co., and was a Sunday school teacher at East Shelby Church of God.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Reeves and Maggie Alice Greene Pearson; and one brother James Pearson.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Inez Higgins Pearson; three sons and two daughters-in-law Mike Pearson of Los Angeles, Bill and Betty Pearson of Raleigh and Jimmy and Maxine Pearson of Fort Washington, Md.; six daughters and five sons-in-law Gail and LaMorris Lail, Janice and Bobby Parker, Karen and Dean Ruppe and Teresa Pearson, all of Shelby, Priscilla and Randy Ware of Brandford, Fla. and Drs. Linda and Denny Nalty of Columbia, S.C.; one sister Dorothy Lutz of Chester, S.C.; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Rose Hill Memorial Park, with the Rev. Bobby Callaham officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday from 1 to 2:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

SHELBY - Preston Thomas Oliver, infant son of Tyrone and Courtney Oliver, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
He is survived by maternal grandparents Cathy and Thomas Rempson of Shelby; great-grandparents Catherine and Tommy Lawing of Charlotte; uncles and aunts, Joe and Rachel Rempson of Charlotte, Eddie Rempson and Shelley Ledford of Shelby; great-uncles and aunts, Dianne and Tommy Lawing Jr. of Charlotte, Nanette and Bob Lawing of Charlotte, JoLynne and Mark Passante of Sanford; cousins Avery Rempson of Charlotte, Ashley Lawing and Wes Lawing of Charlotte, Tripp Lawing of Boca Raton, Fla., Silver Jones and Eric Jones of Sanford. Frances Bettis
SHELBY - Mrs. Frances Blanton Bettis, 79, of 2071 Fallston Road, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
Born in Gaston County Feb. 20, 1921, she was the daughter of Moseline Beam Blanton of Shelby and the late Eura Blanton. She was a homemaker and a private sitter. She belonged to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class at Pleasant Grove.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Austell "Jack" Bettis Jr.; a brother, Cloy Blanton; and a son-in-law, Reid Daves.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Austell III and Brenda Bettis and Jack Stanley Bettis both of Shelby; a daughter, Lynn B. Daves of Lawndale; three brothers, Bill Blanton of Fallston, and Roland Blanton and Scott Blanton both of Shelby; four sisters, Dot Vance, Jeanette Ellis, Edris Melton and Margaret Greene all of Shelby; five grandchildren, Tonya Daves, Linda Byrd, Belinda Guy, Brian Bettis and Reida Daves; and two great-grandchildren, Dillon Daves and Lydia Byrd.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. Russell Fitts and Ed Sessom officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Mrs. Selma Lee Elizabeth McEntire Ransom, formerly of Rutherford County, died Monday, April 17, 2000 at her home.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Doggett Grove A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. James Staley officiating.

Arlen Beaver
SHELBY - Mr. Arlen Albert Beaver, 63, of 2160 Weatherford Drive, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at the VA Hospital in Asheville.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born on March 22, 1937 the son of the late Roscoe Oscar and Lena Eloise King Beaver. He was a retired self-employed truck driver. He attended the World Wide Church of God in Charlotte, attended Cleveland Technical Institute and was a graduate of Gardner-Webb College. He served in the Air Force.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Jean Parker Beaver.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard Beaver and Douglas and Tonia Beaver, all of Polkville; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Richard Page of Polkville; three grandchildren, Lindsey Page, Christopher Page and Benjamin Beaver; and a cousin, Donna Darlene Mayhew of Lawndale.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Alton Martin officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park.

SHELBY - Mr. Columbus Franklin "Sam" Church, 76, of 2118 S. Lafayette St., died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at his home.
A native of Georgia, he was the son of the late Clyde and Allie Fields Church. He was retired from Cleveland Community College as housekeeping supervisor. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Queen Church of the home. They celebrated their 57th Wedding Anniversary on Monday, April 24, 2000.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Franklin and Dianne Church of Readyville, Tenn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Jimmy McEntyre and Brenda and Larry Harrison, all of Shelby; two brothers, Enoch Church of Marion and Robert Church of Ellenboro; one sister, Lucille Church of Forest City; six grandchildren, Dana Hobbs, Lisa Cantrell, Jessica McEntyre, Kimberly Pearson, Jeff McEntyre and Brad Pearson; and four great-grandchildren, Dwain Hobbs, Justin McEntyre, Kaetryn Cantrell and Gracie Pearson.

Alpha Absher
WACO - Mrs. Alpha Mae Carpenter Absher, 77, of Cherryville Highway, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Century Care of Cherryville.
Born Aug. 7, 1923 in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Clyde and Docie Laura Wilson Carpenter. She was the retired owner and operator of Alpha Beauty Shop where she worked for 35 years. She was a member of Waco Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, the Tel class and the Ruth class.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Clayton Absher who died in 1980.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Larry and Kathleen Mary Absher of Waco; and three grandchildren, George Absher and Elizabeth Absher, both of Waco, and Jesse Absher of Camp LeJeune.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Waco Baptist Church with the Rev. Royce Ballew officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at Capernaum Cemetery.
