CATO
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Miss Beverly Ann Cato passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn. Miss Cato, a native of Winston-Salem, was born Aug. 8, 1949, to the late Bell G. Cato Sr. and Emma Ervin Cato. She graduated from Atkins High School in 1967. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Bell G. Cato Jr. and Mr. James Arthur Cato. She leaves to cherish her memories five brothers, George (Willie Ervin) Cato and David Cato of Winston-Salem, Bobby L. Cato (Sue) of Clinton, Md., Bernard E. Cato (Beverly) of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Preston L. Cato (Twanna) of Capital Heights, Md.; sisters Patricia E. Cato of Charlotte and Ciesta Cato of Anchorage, Alaska; and other relatives and friends. Family visitation and services will be held Wednesday evening, Jan. 17, 2001, from 7 to 9 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Son Funeral Home. The Rev. Bobby Cato, the Rev. Aldine Ingram and Elder Hylton Stone will officiate. Graveside services and interment will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18 in Evergreen Cemetery. Clark S. Brown & Son Funeral Home is in charge of services and arrangements.

CREED
MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Clayton Mitchell Creed, 60, of 414 Simpson Mill Road, Mount Airy, husband of Ruth East Creed, passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001 at his home. Mr. Creed was born in Surry County on Aug. 19, 1940, son of Clayton Roscoe Creed and Nellie Venable George. Mr. Creed was the owner and operator of Creed’s Garage and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Ruth East Creed of the home; two daughters and a son in-law, Tammy and Bobby ring of Pilot Mountain and Tonya Creed of King; a son, Tony Creed of Mount Airy; five grandchildren, Sean Creed, Brittney Creed, Brandy Tilley, Dakota Tilley and Dustin Tilley; his mother and stepfather, Nellie and Otis George of Mount Airy; his father and stepmother, Clayton and Rosemary Creed of Mount Airy; a half-sister and brother in-law, Cheryl and Richard Bowman of Mount Airy; a half brother and sister in-law, Michael and Vicky Creed of Mount Airy; and two sisters in-law Linda Creed Benge and Norma Creed, both of Mount Airy. Mr. Creed was preceded in death by two brothers, Rondal Creed and Ray Creed. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Bryant’s Chapel Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by Rev. Bill Faw, Rev. Larry Crouse, and Rev. Keith Foster, with burial in the Bryant’s Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at Bryant’s Chapel Baptist Church, where his body will remain until the funeral service. Moody’s funeral home of Mount Airy will be serving the Creed family.

FRYE
Mrs. Mae Caudle Frye, 89, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem. She was born Dec. 10, 1911, in Yadkinville to the late Rev. Tom Caudle and Rosetta Wooten Caudle. Mrs. Frye was a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church for over 65 years. She was one of the founding members of Five Points Senior Citizens. She was a nurse’s aide at Forsyth Medical Center for 10 years. Mrs. Frye loved flowers and educated her family and friends about them. She will be greatly missed by her friends at Meadowbrook Terrace to whom she devoted her time helping others. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Frank Frye and two grandchildren. Surviving are two sons, J.D. Frye and wife Becky of Winston-Salem and Charles Frye and wife Ginger of Raleigh and three daughters, Peggy Beckner and husband Gray and Wanda Gordon and husband Roger of Winston-Salem and Mary Alice Styers and husband Harold of Patrick Springs, Va. She was a devoted grandmother to 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Dwight Caudle and wife Cherry of Waynesville. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carmel Untied Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Ken Eller and the Rev. Bobby Holcomb officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and other times at the home of a daughter, Wanda Gordon, 4615 Paula Drive, Winston-Salem. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Meadowbrook Terrace for their care and kindness shown to them and to Mrs. Frye.

GLASS
BURLINGTON — Mr. George H. Glass, Jr., of 3916 Muhlenberg Court, Twin Lakes, Burlington, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001 at Twin Lakes Center after a lengthy illness. Mr. Glass was born in Guilford County, the son of the late George Harper Glass and the late Grace Moose Glass. He was a retired employee of Borden Chemical/Mystik Tape. Mr. Glass was a very active member of Front Street United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Study Breakfast Group. He was a graduate of N.C. State University, where he played varsity baseball and the trombone for the Wolfpack Marching Band. After graduation, he went on to be an active member of the Wolfpack Club. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, where he was stationed in the South Pacific and Australia. After leaving active duty, he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves for 29 years and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Survivors include his stepmother, Mrs. Irene Glass, of Greensboro; his wife, Mrs. Virginia Qurnell, of the home; sons George H. '`Pepper’‘ Glass III, of Tampa, Fla., and Gregory Gee Glass, of Welcome; a stepdaughter, Mary Lynn Qurnell of Washington, a stepson, Robert Qurnell, of Moultrie, Ga.; sisters Mrs. Margaret Clapp and Mrs. Mary King, both of Greensboro; a half-sister, Mrs. Julia Wright of Greensboro; half-brothers Bennett Glass of Monroe and Harry Glass of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren. Mr. Glass was preceded in death by his first wife, Eloise Blackwelder Glass. The funeral will be Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 at Front Street United Methodist Church, with the service conducted by Dr. William C. Simpson, pastor; Rev. Duke Lackey, associate pastor; and Dr. G. Robert McKenzie. Mr. Glass will be buried in Alamance Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Front Street United Methodist Church and its Men’s Bible Study Group, 136 S. Fisher St., Burlington, N.C. 27127. Rich & Thompson Funeral Service will be assisting the Glass family.

HARRIS
Mrs. Louise Harris, 77, of Winston-Salem, died Monday morning at The Brian Center. She was born in Winston-Salem June 20, 1923, to Brewster Allen Scales and Fannie Taylor Scales. Mrs. Harris worked for Hanes Knitting Co. for 33 years and retired from Thomasville Furniture Co. after 16 years. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon Harris in 1981. Surviving are two sisters, Barbara Edwards of Fayetteville and Lillie Scales of Winston-Salem; a niece, Sandra Scales Fogle and husband John of Winston-Salem; a great niece, Kathryn Whisnant of Fayetteville; two great nephews, Allen and Darren Fogle; and two very special friends, Bea Tucker and Patricia Beard, all of Winston-Salem. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel conducted by the Rev. B.A. Carroll. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Pleasant View Baptist Church, 1206 Pleasant View Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27015

HARTMAN
Mrs. Virginia Burckmyer Hartman of Brookridge Retirement Community, 1199 Hayes Forest Drive in Winston-Salem died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Cemetery, Lincolnton with the Rev. John Shields and the Rev. J. Barry Kramer officiating. Mrs. Hartman was born in Culpepper, Va., to the late Louise Virginia Grimsley and Henry Griggs Burckmyer. She lived in Beaufort, S.C. from 1911 to 1939. She attended St. Mary’s School in Raleigh from 1927 to 1928 and graduated from UNC-G in 1932. She was a retired elementary teacher, having taught in Gastonia, Winston-Salem and Lincolnton for a period of 18 years. In 1939 she married Augustus Kenneth Froneberger of Gastonia. After his service in World War II, she and her husband moved to Lincolnton where she lived from 1948 to 1989. While there, she was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and later the First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Froneberger died in January 1872. She remarried Carl Robert Hartman of Lincolnton in 1974. Mrs. Hartman was active in church, school, civic and social organizations all of her life. She moved to Brookridge Retirement Community in November of 1989. She took pride in her membership in the D.A.R. She was preceded in death by her infant brother, Henry Burckmyer and her sister, Margaret Lloyd Burckmyer. Surviving are her children, John Daniel Froneberger of Linconton, Dr. Margaret Froneberger Carter of Winston-Salem and L.T.C. Thomas Mellon Froneberger of Fayetteville; three grandchildrer, Anna Virginia Froneberger of Winston-Salem and Margaret Susan Froneberger of Fayetteville and Kenneth Russell Carter of Winston-Salem; three stepdaughters, Alice Jean Hartman Rudisill of Hartwell, Ga., Marguerite Hartman Czarnecki of Asheville and Ralphine Hartman Bost of Birmingham, Ala.; five stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 322 E. McBee St. Lincolnton, NC 28092; First Presbyterian Church, 114 W. Main St., Lincolnton, NC 28092; St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Winston-Salem, NC; or to Brookridge Retirement Community, Winston-Salem, NC.

HELTON
KERNERSVILLE — Mrs. Betty Lee Helton, 62, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Helton was born March 2, 1938, in Bell, Ky. a daughter of the late Herchel and Lula Peace Thacker. She was a member of the Eastern Star and president of the ladies V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are a son, James Michael Helton and wife Christle Smith of Louisburg; two daughters, Stephanie (Teddy) Bingham of Thomasville and Pam (Robert) Clinard of Kernersville; three brothers; and four grandchildren, David Michael Helton, James Michael Helton II and Daniel Clinard and Diamond Clinard. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel by Chaplain A. G. Parker. Entombment will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. The family will receive from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

HIGGINS
Mr. James H. Higgins, better known as '`Jimmy’‘, 70, of Britthaven Nursing Home, Wilkesboro died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Mr. Earl Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Higgins was born in Wilkes County, March 18, 1930, to Earlis and Lula Mae Longbottom Higgins. Mr. Higgins is survived by his mother, Ada B. Higgins of Salisbury and two sisters, Ella Mae Pierce of Trinity and Opal Miller of Rockwell. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.

HINES
Mrs. Qumillar King Hines, 66, of 2501 Peachtree St. passed away Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Mary Ellen King and Author Robert King. She was a member of the Steadfast Life Changing Ministries Inc., where she was the mother of the church and a member of the usher board. She was preceded in death by a son, Herman Hickman Jr. and two brothers, Garrie Gene King and Robert Coy King. She leaves to cherish her memory five daughters, Loretta Pope (Winfred), Hilda Hickman, Mary Hardee, Sandra Ingram (Aldine) and Priscilla Penn (Reco); three sons, Wade Brady, Fred Lindsay Jr. and Randall Lindsay; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vernamae France and Brenda Carroll (Paul); a brother, Shelley Charles King; and a host of great-aunts, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at the Upper Room Churches of God in Christ Jesus with Pastor Aldine Ingram Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. (Russell)

HUDSON
Mr. Hoston Woodrow (H.W.) Hudson, 80, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at his home. Mr. Hudson was born Jan. 3, 1921, in Surry County to John w. and Lethia Mickey Hudson. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Bible Baptist Church. After retirement, Mr. Hudson worked part-time with the Pander-Shipp Travel Agency. Surviving are his wife Beatrice Slack Hudson of the home; two step-daughters, Joni (Gary) Noble of Columbia, S.C., Jill Cline of Winston-Salem; three step grandchildren, Erin Cline, Shannon Brewer Noble and Scott Noble; a step great-granddaughter, Autumn Shea Brewer; a sister, Myrtle Hudson of Richmond, Va. and a niece, Barbara Jones of Richmond, Va. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Hanes Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Don Jones. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville, NC is in charge of arrangements.
