LANGSTON
PFAFFTOWN — Mr. Andrew McDonald Langston, 81, of 4385 Mashie Drive, died Monday, January 15, 2001 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Langston was born Aug. 11, 1919, in Johnston County to Osborne Bright and Ophelia Weaver Langston. He was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. In 1981, he retired from the Exxon Corp. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Inez L. Keen of Mt. Olive and Pearlie L. Adams of Angier. Mr. Langston is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Royal Langston, of the home; one daughter, Barbara L. Lesnik, of Winston-Salem; three sons: Andrew M. Langston, Jr. of Running Springs, Calif., Jerry C. Langston of Winston-Salem, and Richard L. Langston of Burgaw; three granddaughters: Mary Lesnik, Maureen Monroy and Karen L. Vaccarro; one grandson, Christopher Andrew Langston; and seven sisters: Laverna Britt of Raleigh, Marceline Parker of Atlanta, Velma Blackwood of Jacksonville, Fla., Alice Connolly of Jacksonville, N.C., Florine Williams and Patricia McPhail, both of Raleigh, and Jo Anne Bowling of Broadway. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with a brief visitation to follow. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church by Father Herbert Burke A private burial will follow. MASTIN
NORTH WILKESBORO — William Thomas '`Will’‘ Mastin, 86, of Monroe Road died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Britthaven of Wilkesboro. Mr. Mastin was born Dec. 9, 1914, in Wilkes County to Monroe P. and Bessie A. Myers Mastin. He was a member of Fishing Creek Arbor Baptist Church. Surviving are three sons, Ray Thomas Mastin and wife Vera of Kernersville, Clay William Mastin and wife Patsy of Millers Creek, and Jerry Dean Mastin of Wilkesboro; two daughters, Doris Lorene Bumgarner of North Wilkesboro and Mrs. Jerrell '`Dianne’‘ Laws of Purlear; two brothers, Lee Mastin and M.P. Mastin Jr. of North Wilkesboro; a sister, Fern Mastin of North Wilkesboro; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17 at Miller Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jason Whitley and the Rev. Ken Pardue officiating. Burial will be in the Fishing Creek Arbor Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro. PINNACLE — Mr. Solomon Alton '`Sam’‘ McGee of 1416 Perch Road passed away Sunday, Jan 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in Forsyth County, the son of the late Solomon Augustus and Ivy Mabel Bostic McGee. Mr. McGee was a self-employed painting contractor and the owner of Sam’s Curb Market in Ogburn Station. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Surviving are his wife, Linda Speaks McGee of the home; two daughters, Sandra McGee Hege of the home and Rose McGee Brown and husband, Randy of Linwood; a son, Gerald Alton McGee of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Samantha Hege and Michael Hege, Jr. of the home ad Darrell Ray McGee of Durham; a sister, Rachel Lloyd of Walnut Cove. Mr. McGee was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The McGee family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
MESSICK
Juanita Carlyse Conrad Messick, a Winston-Salem resident, wife of the late Ray Fearrington Messick and daughter of the late Nora and Edwin Conrad, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Oct. 26, 1915, in Forsyth County and graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School. She was a lifelong member of Calvary Moravian Church and had always adored gathering her large family together for the Christmas Love Feast as one of her wonderful family traditions. Her family was the light of her life and she was especially thrilled with the birth of each new baby. Survivors are one daughter, Sylvia Messick Gilley and husband James R.; four sons, Dale Carlyse Messick and wife Diane, Ralph Edwin Messick and wife Patricia, Larry Eugene Messick and Norma Messick, and William Penry Messick and wife Debby; grandchildren Michael Gilley and wife Donna, Elizabeth Gilley, Nita Gilley Dry and husband Todd Dry, Kevin Messick and wife Laura, Thomas Messick and wife Tina, Mark Messick, Amy Messick Paynter and husband Robert, Aaron Messick and Brent Messick, Alisa, Andrea and Andrew Messick, and Torrey and Ryan Rieser. Nita was also very proud of her adorable great-grandchildren Caroline Gilley, Gray and Mckenzie Gilley, Brandon and Chandler Dry, Holly and Jack Messick, Spencer and Grayson Messick, and Hannah and Robert Paynter. She is also survived by one devoted sister, Evelyn Conrad; and three brothers, Tom and a very devoted sister-in-law Pennie Conrad, James Conrad and wife Jackie, and Richard Conrad and wife Frankie. She was preceded in death by brothers Forrest Conrad and wife Nell, and Leo Conrad. Also deceased are sisters Hazel McLeod and husband Mac, Pauline West and husband Nat, Edrie McGhee and husband O.T. MYERS
ADVANCE — Mr. Tildren Ray Myers, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth after having been in declining health for at least seven years. He previously was a resident at Clare Bridge Assisted Living Residence from November 1997 until October 2000 when he became a resident at The Oaks. He was born in Advance to the late George Valentine and Lou Burton Myers on Oct. 22, 1919, the youngest of his siblings all of whom preceded him in death; Ollie Myers, Odell Myers, Annie Boger, Richard Myers, Sanford Myers, Will Myers, Sally Bodsford, Edd Myers, Mae Whicker and Robert Myers. He was educated at the Shady Grove School in Advance. As a young man, he was a member of Elbaville Methodist Church and sang in a quartet. He honorably served in the United States Army from July 29, 1940, until June 19, 1945, with Battery B, 78th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Armored Division, and from June 12, 1946, until July 27, 1949, with Company B, 1st Battalion, 350th Infantry Regiment. He rose to the rank of sergeant and while in the Army participated in the sport of boxing. While serving with the 2nd Armored Division in the early 1940s, he was under the command of the legendary Major General George Smith Patton Jr. He served overseas Oct. 16, 1942, until June 8, 1945, as a veteran of the following campaigns: Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland, all with the 2nd Armored Division. He was with the 2nd Armored Division when it made its famous night move of over 70 miles on ice and snow-covered roads to get in front of the Germans’ corresponding unit, the 2nd Panzer Division, and stopped the Germans’ deepest penetration in the famous Battle of the Bulge on Christmas Day, 1944. The 2nd Panzer Division was destroyed by the 2nd Armored Division that day and never fought again in World War II. This saved the port of Antwerp from being captured by the Germans. Following the war, he served in the American Army of Occupation in Italy. His decorations include the Distinguished Unit Badge, the American Defense Service Medal, two Good Conduct Medals, the EAMET Campaign Medal with five Bronze Service Stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He was employed with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. 1945-46 and 1949 until his retirement in 1981. He married Mattie Lois Laird Myers on Sept. 17, 1950, at Bethlehem Methodist Church in Advance. She preceded him in death on Jan. 6, 1994. They had three children who, along with their spouses, survive him: the Rev. (Judge) Jimmy Laird Myers of Advance, Thomas Ray Myers and wife Diane of Charlottesville, Va., and Marla Myers Foster and husband Shane of Advance. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Troy Wayne Taylor, a student at Pembroke University; Shanna Leigh Taylor of Advance; and Katherine Suzanne Myers and Carolyn Jean Myers of Charlottesville, Va.; and by 12 nephews and 8 nieces. His hobbies included hunting and gardening. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, and he was a life member of the Advance Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8719 and the 2nd Armored Division Association. He was a good man whose children never saw him mistreat or heard him say a cruel word to their mother, and he was constantly by her side during her battle with cancer. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ, spending his last days praising the Lord in song while lying in a nursing home bed. He loved his family, and he loved his country. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 321 Redland Road, Advance, conducted by the Revs. J. Mark Weekley and Donald Funderburk. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The interment in the church mausoleum will follow with military rites. The family will receive friends at Vogler’s Clemmons Funeral Chapel, Middlebrook Drive, 7-9 p.m. Monday and at other times at the home. PARDUE
LEXINGTON — Ms. Irene Pardue of Lexington, formerly of Knoxville, Tenn., passed away on Jan. 13, 2001, after a lengthy illness. Ms. Pardue was born Nov. 17, 1904, to the late Nell Duggan Pardue and the late T.W. Pardue. Her stepmother was the late Maggie M. Pardue. A half-sister, Bordie Belle Pardue Hartman, of Lexington and a half-brother, T.D. Pardue, of Fort Myers, Fla., survive her. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. Margaret Ezell of Knoxville, Tenn., a special cousin, also survives her. Special thanks go to loving caregivers Pam Hartman and Jane Ellis. A private graveside service was held at Mount Carmel Methodist Church on Ebert Street, Winston-Salem, Monday, Jan. 15, 2001. The Rev. Tom Shelton officiated. Arrangements are with Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Road, Winston-Salem; however, the family will not be holding visitation.

YADKINVILLE — Mrs. Rita Jackson Stanley, 70, died Monday morning, Jan. 15, 2001 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Sept. 6, 1930 in Guilford County to John Robert Jackson and Clevie Doris Jackson (Clark). Mrs. Stanley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Avery Stanley; a brother, Ronnie Eugene Clark, and a special friend Pauline Ashburn Burns. Surviving are a daughter, Sue Ann Perea and husband, Julian, of Yadkinville; a grandson, Timothy Lynn Stanley, of the home; a sister, Ruth Moore Wheeler, of Winston-Salem; a sister in-law, Linda Marshall Clark, of Summerfield; also nine loving nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A short funeral service will follow the visitation at 8:30 p.m.
STIGALL
Calvin Edd Stigall, 77, of Stigall Road, died Monday, January 15, 2001, at Forysth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County, May 31, 1923, the son of John and Maggie (Pettus) Stigall. Mr. Stigall operated his farm most of his life and has retired from the City of Winston-Salem as manager of the landscaping division. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Mock in 1988. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Emma Mae Stigall of the home; daughters, Wanda Sue Hill and Penny Cox; a son, John Stigall, all of Kernersville; sisters, Emma Jane Stigall and Minnie Katherine Stigall, both of Kernersville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. John C. Woods officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Ms. Dorothy Baynes Underwood, 73, of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born to the late Sydney Baynes and Florence Brame Baynes on July 11, 1927, in Winston-Salem. She was married to the late Robert L. Underwood for 32 years. He preceded her in death in February of 1989. She was a homemaker and a beautiful person who loved life. Everywhere she went she made a friend. Drawing, singing and playing the piano were a few of her favorite things. She attended Southside Baptist Church and was a charter member of Konnoak Hills Moravian Church. Her four children, Bobby Underwood, Linda Worley, Mark Underwood and Susan Underwood; one sister, Patricia Sheets; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive her. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Forsyth Memorial Park. The Rev. James Newsome Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Monday at Vogler’s Reynolda Road Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Claude Allen '`Whitey’‘ Watts, Jr., 82, of Charlotte lost his courageous battle with cancer Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001. Mr. Watts was born Jan. 5, 1919, in Forsyth County, a son of the late Claude Allen Watts, Sr. and Eula Shore Watts. He was a graduate of High Point University and has always been active in their alumni association. In 1997, the University honored him with a distinguished service award. During World War II, he served with the Marine Corps. In 1980, Mr. Watts retired from McLean Trucking Co. as district sales and operations manager. Until recently he was an avid golfer at the Carmel Country Club. As a longtime member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, he was also a member of their senior primetime group. Mr. Watts is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia M. Watts; his two daughters, Janice Kellen and her husband, Peter Kellen of Cary and Bonnie Winecoff and her husband, John Winecoff of Albemarle; his son, Kerry Watts and his wife, Laurie Watts of Charlotte; his brother, Donald Watts and his wife, Grace Watts of Pfafftown and five grandchildren, Michael, Kristin and David Kellen and Carrie and Amy Winecoff. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3115 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC with the Rev. Richard Newsome officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Harry and Bryant Co., 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC. Interment will be at Sharon Memorial Park.
