WARD
Mrs. Grace Edith Yarborough Ward, 97, former resident of 105 Cornell Drive, High Point died Jan. 15, 2001, at 2:15 p.m. at the GrayBrier Nursing and Retirement Center. She was born Jan. 30, 1903, in Davidson County, a daughter of the late Alphaus Aaron and Barbara Frances Beall Wheeler Yarborough. A resident of High Point most of her life, Mrs. Ward was a homemaker and was a charter member of Hilliard Memorial Baptist Church where she was the pianist for many years and was also a member of the Worldwide Adult Sunday school class. She was married to William (Roby) Ward who preceded her in death in February 1972. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, June Bivins and two grandchildren, Gary Bivins and Cathy Bivins Johnson. Surviving is a daughter, Evelyn Ward Hutchens of Winston-Salem; two sons, Wendell R. Ward and wife, Jackie of Thomasville and Ronald W. Ward and wife, Glenda of Archdale; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hilliard Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. John Allard and the Rev. Ray Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale and at other times at the home of Ronald Ward, 204 Rivermeade Drive, Archdale. Pallbearers will be Tommy Ward, Heath Ward, Henry Hutchens, Jack Yarborough, Dean Maxwell, Scott Hutchins, Keith Bivins and Gary O’Neal. BERRIER
Mrs. Elzie Pitts Berrier, 106, of Midway School Road died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, in Britthaven of Davidson Nursing Center. She was born Jan. 11, 1895, in Davidson County the daughter of the late George Ransome Pitts and Julia Livengood Pitts. Mrs. Berrier was a homemaker and a member of Canaan United Methodist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher, a member of the Emma Clodfelter Sunday school class and was lay person of the year. She was married to Harvey Phillip Berrier who preceded her in death June 29, 1965. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Gray; and two sons, Ray E. Berrier and G. Everett Berrier. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Maude Hartman, Mrs. Florence Warden and Mrs. Violet Nichols all of Winston-Salem; five sons, J. Clyde Berrier, H. Paul Berrier, Clay P. Berrier and John P. Berrier all of Winston-Salem and Dr. Floyd L. Berrier of Huntersville; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Canaan United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wade Childers and the Rev. Lee Strange officiating. The interment will be in the church cemetery. SANDY RIDGE — Mrs. Mary Bennett Griffin, 82, formerly of Sandy Ridge died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Oak Summitt Nursing Home in Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Delta United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Griffin was born in Davie County. She was a former employee of Burlington Industries Inc. and Macfield Inc. and was a member of Delta United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Griffin; parents Joseph A. and Myrtle Carter Bennett; a daughter, Tina M. Griffin; and a son, Clarence Griffin Jr. Survivors include her sons, Douglas Griffin and wife Phyllis of Patrick Springs, Va. and Tony Griffin of Madison; daughters Nancy G. Spencer and Judy G. Stanley and husband Doug of Sandy Ridge; brothers David and Fletcher Riggs of Martinsville, Va. and Wayne Riggs of Stoneville; sisters Thelma Newman and Elsie Cahill of Martinsville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Brenda '`Dianne’‘ P. Kirk, 53, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Aug. 30, 1947, in Danville, Va. to Otis Wayne and Thelma Neely Pressley. Mrs. Kirk was a member of Abundant Grace Tabernacle. She was preceded in death by her foster mother, Ann Wallace. Surviving are her loving husband, William G. Kirk of the home; two sons, John Clayton Jackson of Carolina Beach and Douglas Ryan Buckner of the home; four stepchildren; 16 grandchildren; three sisters; and two brothers. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Mike Jefferson officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
MACEMORE
HAMPTONVILLE — Ms. Nellie Jane Macemore, 95, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Yadkin Heritage Care. Mrs. Macemore was born Sept. 15, 1905, in Yadkin County to John William and Rosa Lee Cook Macemore. She was a homemaker and a member of Swaims Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Erma Macemore Combs; and four brothers, Dee Watson Macemore, Charlie Lester Macemore, Henderson Winfield Macemore and Walter Clarence Macemore. Surviving are two sisters, Esther Macemore Shutt and Lula Macemore Evans of Hamptonville and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19 at Swaims Baptist Church by the Rev. Isaac Hicks. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. KERNERSVILLE — Mr. Robert '`Bud’‘ Welsh McIlnay, 78, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born June 16, 1922, in Omaha, Neb. to Grant and Ethel Welsh McIlnay. Mr. McIlnay was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline McIlnay; his son-in-law, Marvin Schulze; and two grandsons, David Schulze and Brent Weber. Survivors include a daughter, Kay Schulze of College Station, Texas; three grandchildren, Pam Mead and husband Craig of Toledo, Ohio, Vicki Weber and husband J. D. of Clemmons and bob Schulze and wife Lynn of College Station, Texas; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. A service and the burial will take place in Custar, Ohio. MILLS
Mr. John L. Mills, 78, a retired technician with 42 years service at the National Institute of Standard & Technology died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Claire Bridge of Winston-Salem. Until recently, Mr. Mills lived in Rockville, Md. He was born in Washington, D.C. where he attended Woodrow Wilson High School and later Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa. Rm. Mills was a member and a deacon at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church. His activities included camping, square dancing, woodworking and spectator sports. He is survived by his wife, Jennie R. Mills of Rockville; two children, Barbara A. Ramsey of Houston, Texas and Janet L. (Dr. Beverly) Jones of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; and a brother, Shirley N. Mills of Moorestown, N.J. A memorial service for Mr. Mills will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in the chapel of Centenary United Methodist Church. Mr. Derrict Cortez Moore, 42, of 730 Ferrell Court, Apartment 24 passed Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 15, 1958, in Winston-Salem the son of the late Yvonne C. Moore and Cornell '`Pete’‘ LeGrand. He was a graduate of East Forsyth High School, served in the U.S. Armed Forces and was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church. He leaves to cherish his memories, his fiancée, Ms. Shirley Quattlebaum and her daughter, Kertrilla; his beloved grandmother, Mrs. Eula M. Matthews; his father, Cornell '`Pete’‘ LeGrand; his sisters and brother, Debbie Thomas (Bryant) Valjean Moore and Bernard Moore (Beverlon); two nieces and two nephews; a loved nephew, Lamar Moore all of Winston-Salem; his uncles and aunts, Col. Bobby L. Moore (Geraldine) of Georgia, Robert Moore (Shirley) and Bernard Moore (Lynn), Loleane M. Williams (Bob, a faithful uncle) and Shirley Blackburn; close cousins are MST Ronnie Moore (Kim) of Texas, Nathan '`Rick’‘ Williams (Lisa), Bobby L. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at First United Methodist Church where he was a member. The Rev. John Ferree and the Rev. Jill Alventosa-Brown. Burial will be in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Surviving are his wife, Delineva '`Denny’‘ Motsinger Myers of the home; sons James Brooks Myers and wife Carol of Lexington, David Barry Myers and wife Elaine of Hickory and John Douglas Myers of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and sisters Hazel Myers Nance and Eva Myers Haltom of Thomasville and Rose Myers Dietz of Hickory. Mr. F. Charles Nichols II of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 1, 1956, in Wilson County to Floyd C. and Aldaree Fulghum Nichols. Mr. Nichols was formerly employed by Southern Bell. Surviving are his parents of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Carroll Nichols and wife Selah of Pfafftown and Will Nichols of Winston-Salem; two nieces, Kristen and Katlen Nichols of Pfafftown; and his paternal grandmother, Essie Nichols of Pfafftown. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Rick Speas. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park.
