PARKER
Mr. Henry Bonson Parker, 82, of Clemmons, passed from this life Jan. 16, 2001. He was born March 12, 1918, in Yadkin County to James S. and Sally Hutchens Parker. Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Durham Parker in July 2000. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara P. Lawson and husband, Terry and Shirley P. Griffin of Clemmons; three sons, Harold Parker and wife, Carol, Bobby Parker and wife, Angela and Charles Parker and wife, Dorothy of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a brother, Ivan Parker of Jonesville. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons by the Rev. James Bowen. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
PATTERSON
ADVANCE – John C. Paterson of Bermuda Run in Advance, formerly of English Hills in Hendersonville passed away Monday, Jan. 16, 2001, at his home. Born June 23, 1915, in Thorn Hill, Scotland to John and Jean Wiseman Paterson, he was a World War II veteran and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. An avid golfer, he had traveled extensively with his wife. While living in Hendersonville, Mr. Paterson created and organized two charity golf tournaments featuring PGA Tour Professionals. Tournament proceeds benefited Pardee Hospital. His beloved wife Mabel Vert Paterson preceded him in death in 1999. Surviving are two sons, John C. Paterson Jr. and wife Lynn of Winston-Salem and William Bruce Paterson and wife Margaret of Greenville, S.C.; two daughters, Jessie P. Weber of Winston-Salem and Elizabeth P. Anderson and husband Jim of Shalimar, Fla.; and 10 loving grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Arthur R. Paterson and Walter D. Paterson both living in Florida anda sister, Anne P. Dugdale of Eastham, Mass. A dear sister-in-law, Gertrude Vert Prioli of Swampscott, Mass. and a special friend, Ruby Cox Preston of Pinnacle also remain. The family will receive friends from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. SMITH
Mr. James B. '`Jay’‘ Smith Jr., 63, of 5700 Belle Ave., Winston-Salem passed away at his residence Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001. Mr. Smith was born Sept. 30, 1937, to the late James B. Smith Sr. and Opal Marshall Smith. Surviving are five sisters, Jayne Sydney Jones, Betty Lavon Newbury, Nancy Shumate, Barbara and Leon Settle and Shirley Graley; three brothers, Bobby (Donnie) Smith, Jackie (Sandra) Smith and Buster Smith; seven sons, James Joseph '`J.J.’‘ Smith, Tony Smith, Michael Smith, Robert Smith, Andrew '`A.J.’‘ Smith and Christen Smith; and two daughters, Faye Barber and Deborah Smith. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at the funeral home. SWAIN
SILER CITY – Jessie Motsinger Swain, 75 of 813 Woodland Drive, Siler City died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 N. Second Ave., Siler City by the Rev. Jim Wall. Burial will be held at Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City. Mrs. Swain was a native of Davidson County, a graduate of Campbell College and Wake Forest College. She taught elementary school for a short period after college and was a devoted wife and mother of three children. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors are her husband, Ray F. Swain of Siler City; a daughter, Annette Swain of Atlantic Beach; two sons, Frank E. Swain of Oriental and Steve Swain of Emerald Isle; a sister, Ruth M. Kitchens of Winston-Salem; three grandsons; 3 granddaughters and two great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home. TONSOR
Patrick James Tonsor, 66, of 118 Bramton Court, Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Jan. 16 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. A mass of Christian burial will be 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Our Lady of Mercy in Winston-Salem where he attended for 15 years. Father Jo Barry Angelini will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. He was born in Mitchell, Ill. Nov. 11, 1934, to Steven Tonsor Sr. and Rose Mary Schmidt Tonsor. He was retired from Owen’s Brockway where he worked for 35 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife, Betty Cairns Tonsor; two sons, Tom Tonsor and his wife Dinah of Winston-Salem and Tim Tonsor and his wife JoAnn of Trinity; three grandchildren, Tracey Tonsor and Brandi Tonsor of Winston-Salem and Alyssa Tonsor of Trinity; brothers Steven Tonsor Jr. of Michigan, Bernard Tonsor, Gerald Tonsor and Edward Tonsor all of Illinois; sisters Mary Jean Jarvis and Katherine Warden of Illinois; and a first cousin, Ray Maag of Illinois. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at 118 Bramton Court, Winston-Salem. BARNES
TRINITY — Mrs. Linda Clay Barnes, 50, a resident of 2921 Tall Cedar Lane, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Barnes was born March 11, 1950, in Marlboro County, S.C., a daughter of Charlie Franklin and Stella Billings Clay. Mrs. Barnes was employed as a telecommunicator in the communication department of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority. She was a professional hairdresser, having been associated with Kat’s Hair Salon in Sophia and the Hair Saloon of Archdale. She had previously worked at Rice Hosiery Line and was also a volunteer EMT with the High Point Rescue. She was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Franklin Clay, on Sept. 25, 1993. On March 22, 1970, she was married to Robert Barnes, who survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter, Kellie Y. Barnes of Greensboro; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark L. Barnes and Michelle W. Barnes of Thomasville; her mother, Mrs. Stella Clay of the home; a sister, Mrs. Janice '`Jan’‘ Hilton and her husband, Keith Hilton of Randleman; and four grandchildren, Courtland Kelley, Brook L. Barnes, Zachary L. Barnes and Abigail B. Barnes. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service officiated by the Rev. Dale Johnston and the Rev. J.R. Gossett. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 Friday night at the funeral home. PFAFFTOWN — Mrs. Ellen Merritt Burney died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at her home. She was born March 4, 1916, in Bibb County, Ga. to the late Robert Lee and Nannie Thomas Merritt. Ellen attended Young Harris College and was employed by the U.S. Government before her marriage in 1946 to Reford Bert Burney. Her husband preceded her in death in 1980. She is survived by a sister, Nancy Merritt Banks and husband Leveret of Gallatin, Tenn.; three daughters, Nancy Burney Douglass and Carol Burney Caddo of Pfafftown and Ellen Burney and husband Pepe Vazquez of Hueva, Spain; four grandchildren, Joyce Douglass Avy and husband Todd of Winston-Salem, Rafael Vazquez of Pfafftown and Elena and Jose Vazquez of Hueva, Spain; two great-grandchildren, Susannah and Christian Avy of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20 in the Angel Room at Calvary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. TOBACCOVILLE — Mr. Gary Keith Clayton, 44, died at his home Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001. A native of Forsyth County, he was born June 12, 1956, to John Gray and Martha Wrenn Clayton. Mr. Clayton was an avid hunter and a NASCAR fan. He worked for his father in the family business (John G. Clayton Well Drilling) as a driller. Mr. Clayton was preceded in death by his mother in 1977 and a brother, Charles Robert Clayton in 1987. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Susan '`Michelle’‘ Harris Clayton of the home; five children, Pamela Clayton of Kernersville, Gary Keith Clayton Jr. and wife Murlette of Pfafftown, Christopher Clayton of Walkertown and Robert Seth and Brandon Lee Clayton of the home; six grandchildren; his parents, John G. and Dorothy Clayton of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jimmy Clayton and wife Janet of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Karen C. Laney and husband Roger of Chipley, Fla., and Mary Jane Wood and husband Kelly of Clemmons; two stepbrothers, Duane Albert and wife Sandy of Clemmons and Tim Albert of Winston-Salem; a stepsister, Sherri A. Stewart and husband Barry of Durham; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Harris, the Rev. Calvin Mabry and the Rev. Randall Smith officiating. YADKINVILLE — Mrs. Ruby Nell Pinnix Cranfill, 71, died Tuesday, Jan. 16 at Forsyth Medical Hospital. Mrs. Cranfill was born Oct. 18, 1929, in Yadkin County to Banner and Rodemia Hutchins Pinnix. She was a homemaker and a member of Courtney Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Jed Cranfill of Yadkinville; three grandchildren, Josh Cranfill, Tara Cranfill and Jason Cranfill; three sisters, Marie (Ben) Wood of Hendersonville, Louise Poteate of Boonville and Faye Spillman of the Willowbrook Nursing Center, Yadkinville; and two brothers, Marshall (Florence) Pinnix of Kannapolis and Richard Pinnix of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Pattie Choplin. Burial will follow in the Yadkinville Cemetery. There will be no formal visitation. MOCKSVILLE — The Rev. Coy Isaiah Crowe, 96, formerly of Roseland St., Greensboro died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Autumn Care of Mocksville. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at the Community Evangelical Methodist Church located at 1275 Joe Moore Road, Thomasville with the Rev. Billy Carey officiating.
