PARKER
Mr. Henry Bonson Parker, 82, of Clemmons, passed from this life Jan. 16, 2001. He was born March 12, 1918, in Yadkin County to James S. and Sally Hutchens Parker. Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Durham Parker in July 2000. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara P. Lawson and husband Terry, and Shirley P. Griffin of Clemmons; three sons, Harold Parker and wife Carol, Bobby Parker and wife Angela and Charles Parker and wife Dorothy of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a brother, Ivan Parker of Jonesville. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons by the Rev. James Bowen. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel is serving the family.
PATERSON
ADVANCE – John C. Paterson of Bermuda Run in Advance, formerly of English Hills in Hendersonville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at his home. Born June 23, 1915, in Thorn Hill, Scotland, to John and Jean Wiseman Paterson, he was a World War II veteran and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. An avid golfer, he had traveled extensively with his wife. While living in Hendersonville, Mr. Paterson created and organized two charity golf tournaments featuring PGA Tour professionals. Tournament proceeds benefited Pardee Hospital. His beloved wife, Mabel Vert Paterson, preceded him in death in 1999. Surviving are two sons, John C. Paterson Jr. and wife Lynn of Winston-Salem, and William Bruce Paterson and wife Margaret of Greenville, S.C.; two daughters, Jessie P. Weber of Winston-Salem and Elizabeth P. Anderson and husband Jim of Shalimar, Fla.; and 10 loving grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Arthur R. Paterson and Walter D. Paterson, both living in Florida, and a sister, Anne P. Dugdale of Eastham, Mass. A dear sister-in-law, Gertrude Vert Prioli of Swampscott, Mass., and a special friend, Ruby Cox Preston of Pinnacle, also remain. The family will receive friends from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jack Yarbrough officiating. PHILLIPS
After a long and courageous battle with ALS, Gary Dale Phillips departed this life peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, to live eternally with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Mr. Phillips was born April 29, 1960, in Forsyth County to Thurmond and Weta Key Phillips. He owned his own body shop on Waughtown Street and was a member of Open Door Baptist Church. Surviving are his loving and devoted wife, Tammy Sapp Phillips of the home; his parents of Winston-Salem; a very devoted mother- and father-in-law, Robert and Ruby Sapp of Winston-Salem; eight nieces and nephews; and a brother, Ronnie Phillips and wife Tammy of Lexington. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Richard Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. SIMPSON
CLEMMONS — Gary Wilson Simpson, 64, of 1401 Ashfield Court, beloved patriarch of our family, departed this life and joined his heavenly family on Jan. 17, 2001. He was born October 26, 1936, in Sharon, Tenn., to Hiram Wilson and Brooksie Gaylord Simpson. Gary moved to Chicago at an early age and was a gifted artist who attended the Chicago Art Institute and the Memphis Academy of Art. He retired as Art Director from AT&T Reynolda Road after 39 years and joined the Winston-Salem Journal as creative services art manager six years ago. He served in the Army Reserves for six years. Gary’s many and varied interests included several years of body-building and weight-lifting competitions, in which he was honored with many winning titles including Mr. North Carolina, Mr. South Carolina and Mr. Tarheel. He was a servant of Jesus Christ and served lifelong through his church, First Presbyterian, as a deacon, church and Sawtooth greeter, Samaritan Inn volunteer, Habitat builder, youth club table leader and many other activities. One of his deepest wishes was that his friends and co-workers would attend the Sawtooth services which touched him so deeply. Gary’s gift of a magnetic personality and unconditional love leaves a legacy we pray will be continued by all the lives he touched over the years. Pass it forward! He was preceded in death by a son, Ryan Thomas Simpson, whom Gary is now joyfully united with. He leaves to cherish the many happy memories his wife, Susan Walters Simpson of the home; his children, Regi Elizabeth Simpson, Ian Thomas Simpson, and Jovanna Lynn Kimbrel; granddaughter Lauren Elise Kimbrel; a brother, Phillip Bryant Simpson and wife Linda of Charlotte; a sister, Pamela Simpson Minter and husband Buddy of Hilton Head, S.C.; nephews Sterling, Shaun and Brad; nieces Adair and Brooke; and a great-niece, Reilly. He is also survived by a multitude of friends and co-workers whom he also loved and cherished. A celebration of his life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Russ Ritchel and Dr. Jeff White officiating. SPENCER
NAPERVILLE, Ill. — C. Weston Spencer, 80 died Jan. 13, 2001. He was the beloved father of three, including Mike (Kristi Vaughn) Spencer of Kernersville; and grandfather of nine, including Ryley Hinshaw. He was a 1943 graduate of North Central College in Naperville and a football coach for 26 years with only two losing seasons. He was inducted into Illinois High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1985. His son, Mike, Wake Forest class of 1972, played under his father and was one of four Naperville athletes to play at Wake Forest. God saw that you were getting tired and a cure was not meant to be. So he put his arms around you and whispered come unto me. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands laid to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us that he only takes the best. Mother Mary Brown Stuckey of 795 Eighth St., Apt. 5 passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after a period of illness. She was born in Darlington County, S.C., to the late Joshua Pompey and Viola McCuthen Pompey. She attended the Darlington County, S.C. public schools. After moving to Winston-Salem many years ago, she worked over 35 years for Winston-Leaf Tobacco Co. and at Piedmont Leaf Tobacco Co. She was a member of Grace United Community Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Stuckey and Willie Stuckey. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mary Thrash (Herman) and Mrs. Shelby B. Young, both of Winston-Salem; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Price and Mrs. Elizabeth Wingate, both of Timmonsville, S.C.; a brother, Charlie Pompey of Timmonsville, S.C.; a daughter-in-law, Sarah Stuckey of Winston-Salem; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Grace United Community Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph C. Parks officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at Evergreen Cemetery. KING — Mr. James Alexander Tackett, 65, of Puckett Road, Westfield died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001. He was born Nov. 25, 1935, in Taswell County, Va. to William Columbus and Lydia Ethel McGuire Tackett. He was retired from Dixie Chipboard in Rural Hall. Preceding him in death was his wife, Ruby Mae Myers Tackett and a brother, Paul Tackett. Surviving are two sons, Vernon James (Brenda) Tackett of Westfield and Allen Tackett of Pinnacle; three sisters, Betty Childress of Shoals, Mary Williams of Westfield and Ruby Young of Rural Hall; three brothers, Herbert Tackett of Walnut Cove, Billy Joe Tackett of King and Buddy Tackett of Siloam; five grandchildren, Alice Butcher, Vernon James Tackett Jr., Ruby Tackett, Rebecca Hawks and Joe Tackett; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Tackett and Monica Hawks. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Slate Funeral Home in King with the Rev. Tommy Holder officiating. Burial will follow in the First Baptist Church of King Cemetery. GERMANTON - Mr. Robert Guy Adams, loving husband and devoted father and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 19, 2001. Mr. Adams was born in Surry County on Dec. 20, 1931, the son of Bosey Isom and Sally Maude Webster Adams. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stanleyville and had served in various capacities throughout out his church life. He was employed at R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 30 years, in the trucking department as a driver and as a supervisor. Mr. Adams is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mrs. Nancy Adams of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Cindy Adams of Rural Hall and Tony and Marcia Adams of Germanton; four grandchildren, Misty, Molly, Kelli and Christina; a sister, Carolyn Martin; and a brother, Glenn Adams. A sister, Magdalene Moorefield and a brother, Ray Adams, preceded Mr. Adams in death. Mr. Adams will be taken to the First Baptist Church of Stanleyville at 4:30 p.m. Sunday where funeral services will be conducted at 7 Sunday evening in the church Sanctuary by the Rev. Jonathan Rogers. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday in the church cemetery. Mrs. Nancy Whitaker Ansley, 63, of 2240 Sunderland Road, N. 66 died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Nov. 8, 1937, in Scotland County to the late Leonard Aaron and Minnie Miller Whitaker. Mrs. Ansley was a member of First Assembly of God. She is survived by her husband, Jack H. Ansley of the home; three sons; Douglas B. Ansley and wife Maryann of Louisburg, Kenneth B. Ansley and wife Janice of Lexington and Keith H. Ansley of Dobson; a daughter, Jacqueline A. Wilkins of Belews Creek; five grandchildren, Melissa Ansley, Lauren Wilkins, Matthew Ansley Michele Hundley and April Earles; and two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Morgan Earles; five brothers, Hervey, Gene, Bill, Ray and Mike Whitaker; and three sisters, JoAnna Parkhurst, Jeanette Collins and Tina Foster.
