Mr. Samuel Hunter Henderson, 83, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 23, 2001, at Segraves Nursing Care Center in Jefferson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel, by the Rev. Rex Hall and the Rev. Ken Blevins. Burial will follow in the Corinth Cemetery in Mouth of Wilson, Va. Mr. Henderson was born in Grayson County on March 35, 1917, to Charlie and Daisy Ruth Tucker Henderson. He was an agricultural farmer. He is survived by his wife, Waive Price Henderson of the home; a son, Sam Henderson, of Grassy Creek; two daughters, Nancy Anders of Bermuda Run and Jackie Pennington, of Independence, Va.; a son-in-law, Scott Anders, of Bermuda Run; six grandchildren, Anthony Joe Anders of Greensboro, Sterling Anders and Desiree Anders both of Winston-Salem, Heather Griffis of Asheville, Jacqueline Pennington of Lexington and Kimberly Pennington of Winston-Salem; and a great-grandson, Tyler Sage Griffis of Asheville. HUTCHENS
YADKINVILLE — Mr. Locksley Samuel '`Shorty’‘ Hutchens, 61, died today at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. The son of the late Samuel and Lola Sprinkle Hutchens, he was born in Yadkin County July 29, 1939. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mrs. Rose Marie Hutchens; a daughter, Kim Hutchens Driver both of the home; a stepson, Randy Macemore of Hamptonville; a stepdaughter, Chandroa Macemore of Hamptonville; and a goddaughter, Kimberly Hunter of Yadkinville. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. He was a retired long haul driver for I.M.C. Trucking Co. He attended Church of Christ in Shacktown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at Reavis Funeral Home, Yadkinville Chapel, W. Main St., Yadkinville. The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral chapel with the Rev. Vernon Brown and Brother Leslie Chamberlin officiating. Burial will follow in Yadkin Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Mary Fowler Johnson, 88, of Arbor Acres died in her home Jan. 23, 2001. Mrs. Johnson was born Dec. 25, 1912, in Pilot Mountain to the late Mr. Oscar Thomas (O. T.) Fowler Sr. and Mrs. Daisy Ashburn Fowler. Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Greensboro College and the New York School of Interior Design. She was a prominent interior designer and owned her own business, Mary Johnson, Design Consultant. In her early years, she worked for WSJS Radio as one to the narrators for the Children’s Story Hour and loved volunteering her time to the Little Theater. Mary was a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and examples of her creative ability and elegant style can be found in many fine homes and business throughout the southeast. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist, Winston-Salem Symphony Guild, Twin City Club, past president of NC Medical Auxiliary and was active in the restoration of R.J. Reynolds Auditorium. When Mary was not designing interiors, traveling the world or visiting with her grandchildren, she could be found sculpting a piece of clay. She was the wife of the late Dr. Paul W. Johnson and mother-in-law to the late CDR John C. Scull U.S.N. Surviving are her daughters, Daca Thomas and Maripaul Scull Cosper and their husbands, Ray and Jim; four grandchildren, Lindsay Thomas, Rian Thomas, John Scull and Jim Cosper; two brothers, O.F. Fowler and O.T. Fowler Jr.; and four sisters, Irene Gambill, Mabel Jones, Margaret Macklin and Ruth Lindsay. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26 at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at Centenary United Methodist. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery. KIRCHNER
Mrs. Olivia Bradford Welch Kirchner of Winston-Salem died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Ellisville, Miss., May 4, 1916, to the late Timothy Daniel Welch and Leonora Perry Estes Welch. Mrs. Kirchner was preceded in death by her husband of 24 years, Marcellus Clement Kirchner, and one sister, Phredonia Estes Welch. Survivors include her son, Marcellus, and his wife, Theresa, of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, Richard Noel Welch, and his wife, Yolande, of Memphis, Tenn.; one sister, Mrs. Frances Rogers Welch Guthrie of Memphis, Tenn.; five nephews, William Bradford Guthrie, and his wife, Sandy, of Cordova, Tenn., Edmund Louis Kirchner, and his wife, Pat, of Memphis, Tenn., William Michael Kirchner, and his wife, Clara, of Bartlett, Tenn., Timothy Ransom Welch, and his wife, Cyndi, of Apex, and Daniel Richard Welch, and his wife, Nancy, of Mineola, N.Y.; four nieces; Mary Evelyn Kirchner Mulrooney, and her husband, Al, of Collierville, Tenn., Linda Kirchner Honnoll, of Memphis, Tenn., Anna Kirchner Guiabo, of Hayward, Calif., and Kathleen Noel Welch Campbell and her husband, John, of Sanibel Island, Fla., and several great-nephews and great-nieces. Mrs. Kirchner graduated from Memphis State University. She worked for the Department of the Navy, the Veterans Administration, and retired from the staff of Wake Forest University. She was an avid gardener and bridge player, a member of the Piedmont Club, and a devoted parishioner of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. She also was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Woman’s Club of Winston-Salem, the Thursday Morning Music Club, the St. Theresa’s Guild, and the Winston-Salem Garden Study Club. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, with the Rev. Herbert Burke officiating. Interment will be Friday, Jan. 26, at Calvary Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn., with departure to the cemetery at 1 p.m. from Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Kirchner’s memory to St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 225 Springdale Ave., Winston-Salem, 27104. YADKINVILLE — Mrs. Margaret Roberts Lewis, 61, died Tuesday, Jan. 23 at Forsyth medical Center. Mrs. Lewis was born March 17, 1939, in Yadkin Co. to Sam and Dora Ireland Roberts. She was a very loving and caring person who worked part-time at Helping Hands, after retiring from UNIFI Corp. Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her mother and father; a sister: Lucy R. Beard and a brother; Harold S. Roberts. Surviving are a daughter, Glenda Cleary (J.R. Johnson) of Hamptonville; two sons;, Jasper Wagoner and Dale Wagoner (Tammy Kilby) all of Hamptonville; a grandson, Jeffery Wagoner of Hamptonville; two sisters, Edith R. Brown of Thomasville; Pansy R. Nichols of Jonesville; and two brothers, Glen S. Roberts and Lester M. Roberts of Jonesville. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26 at Gentry Family Funeral Chapel, Yadkinville, by the Rev. Jerry Sizemore and the Rev. Gary Litchfield. Mr. Victor Gary Lowe Sr., 39, of 4506 Tise Ave. departed this earthly life Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center to enter into eternity with Almighty God. He was born April 27, 1961, to Hilda Jones Lowe and the late Howard Edward Lowe Sr. in Winston-Salem. He was employed with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system. He leaves to cherish his devoted wife, Toni M. Lowe; two sons, Victor Gary Lowe Jr. and Paul Joseph Lowe; his mother, Hilda J. Lowe; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Willie P. Martin; two brothers, Howard Edward Lowe Jr. of Charlotte and Miles Dexter Lowe of Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters, Josetta (Rex) Timberlake and Minetta (Thurmond) Werts of Winston-Salem; four nieces; five nephews; and many uncles, aunts, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Walkertown with the Rev. I.L. Anthony officiating. Interment will be in Gardens of Memory, Walkertown. McILWAIN
Waverly Dix McIlwain of 901 Bethesda Road died Jan. 20, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 16, 1919, in Walker Springs, Ala. to the late Waverly Willard Coleman and Zettie McIlwain. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, W.L. Dix and Homer McIlwain and a son, William Floyd Dix. She was a kindergarten teacher. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Freeman Chapel with the Rev. DeJuan Walley officiating. Burial was held in the Waynesboro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials were made to First Baptist Church Family Life Center Fund in Waynesboro, Miss. Mrs. McIlwain was a member of First Baptist Church in Waynesboro, Miss. and was under the watchcare of Knollwood Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Fortnightly Club and a former executive secretary for the Wayne County Division of the American Red Cross for about 30 years. She owned and operated Mrs. Dix’s Kindergarten for 20 years. Mrs. McIlwain is survived by a daughter and her husband, Barbara Dix McWhorter and Dr. Mike McWhorter of Winston-Salem; step-sons, Homer Ellis McIlwain and wife, Mattie McIlwain of Waynesboro, Miss., Julius McIlwain and wife, Roxie McIlwain of New Orleans, La. and daughter-in-law, Genevieve Dix of Memphis, Tenn.; grandchildren, Waverly McWhorter (Bud) Henderson, Helen McWhorter (Charlie) Kennedy, Michael Dix McWhorter, Ellis (Terry) McIlwain, Monty McIlwain, Homer Lynn McIlwain, Randall (Elizabeth) McIlwain, and Rachael McIlwain and great-grandchildren, Sydney Henderson, Ashley Henderson and Hope McIlwain.

Mr. Tommy Lee Messer, 56, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Messer was born Aug. 6, 1944, in Forsyth County, a son of the late George W. and Annie Clark Messer. He was employed with Carr Freight and attended Crestview Baptist Church. On Nov. 11, 1987, he married Mrs. Carolyn Richardson who survives him of the home. In addition he is survived by a daughter, Dawn Bledsoe Myers and husband, David of Winston-Salem; a son, Allen Messer of Lexington; three grandchildren, Zachary Myers, Lance McLaurin and Tiffany Messer; a brother, Jimmy G. Messer of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Margaret Saintsing of Thomasville, Thelma Jean Tamplin of King and Beulah Bradley of Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Frances Mechum, Georgia A. Henley and Myrtle Rick and two brothers, Frank C. Messer and George W. Messer. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Crestview Baptist Church with the Rev. Ottis Hurst officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the hour of service. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home. J.C. MYERS
Nancy Ann Ijames Myers passed away Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at her home on the farm in Union Grove where she lived with her husband of 48 years, Homer C. Myers Jr. She was born Sept. 9, 1930, to Denton and Nancy Dennis Ijames. She grew up in Davie County along with her sisters, Letty Ijames Hinshaw of Boonville and Betty Ijames George of Westfield and her brother, Dennis Ijames of Mocksville. She was a 1947 graduate of Mocksville High School in Davie County. She graduated from Mars Hill College and the University of NC at Greensboro with a bachelor’s degree in home economics. She received her master’s degree from NC State University in adult education with a minor in housing. Nancy retired in 1985 after 32 years as an Iredell County home economics extension agent. She was honored by her peers with a State and National Distinguished Service Award for her expertise in assisting families improve life skills. Nancy and H.C.’s children are Barry C. Myers and wife Maryjane, Tony G. Myers, Frances M. Cantrell and husband Marvin and Mary M. Barbour and husband Erskine. They have 12 grandchildren. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church and Union Grove’s Extension Homemakers Club. Nancy’s home was always open, and her table always spread with food for any and all who stopped in. Nan Nan was a devoted, caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to so many people. The family would like to thank Northern Hospice of Surry County for their assistance in allowing us to keep Nancy at home during this brief illness. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dennis J. Shaw and the Rev. Eugene Burris. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour and interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Friday evening at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home and other times at the residence at 3432 Buck Shoals Road, Union Grove.
