BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Mrs. Lucille Scott Grant, of 2091 A Pacific St., formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Brooklyn. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Frank R. Bell Funeral Home. Mrs. Grant is survived by two brothers, Wendell Scott of Augusta, Ga., and Irvin Scott of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Evelyn Beatty of Durham, and Edith (Ben) Roseboro of Winston-Salem; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Frank R. Bell Funeral Home, 536 Sterling Place, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11238 is in charge of services for Mrs. Lucille Scott Grant.

LEXINGTON — Mrs. Lillie Sowers Hill, 102, of 6313 Ridge Road died Jan. 25, 2001, at her home in Midway. She was born Nov. 30, 1898, in Davidson County, the daughter of John and Mary Brinkley Sowers. She was a homemaker and the oldest member of Midway United Methodist Church and was an active member as long as health permitted. She was married to Elmer Cletus Hill who preceded her in death Nov. 27, 1980. Mrs. Hill was also preceded in death by a son, Ray Hill, on March 2000. Surviving are two sons, Glenn Hill and wife Virginia and Bruce Hill and wife Peggy; two daughters, Edna Snyder and husband Jack and Mary Tesh and husband John; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Opal Hutchens, Odessa Lothridge and Pat Williams, who assisted in her care over the years. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Midway United Methodist Church with the Revs. Harry Sellers and Hollis Youngblood officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and at other times at their respective homes. JOHNSON
KING — Mr. Clyde M. Johnson, 80, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, after being in declining health for several years. He was born Aug. 13, 1920, in Stokes County to Zephra Oliver and Minnie Meadows Johnson. Clyde served with the U.S. Army during World War II, was a retired farmer and had also been employed by Pinkerton Security. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Cleo Redding and Maxie Ferguson, and four brothers, Dowell, Denson, Carlis and Moir Johnson. Mr. Johnson is survived by a special brother-in-law, Elmore Redding of Germanton, and a sister-in-law, Jean Johnson of Pfafftown. He was a member of Quaker Gap Baptist Church, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, with Dr. James Baldwin and the Rev. Gerald Jones officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial with military rites by the American Legion Post 290 of King will follow in the church cemetery. SILOAM — Mrs. Julia Lucinda Estep Johnson, 90, passed away Jan. 24, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Johnson was born May 11, 1910, in Wilkes County to David Brian Estep and Sarah Jeanette Marlow Estep. She was married to James Edgar Johnson, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Siloam Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Virginia J. Peele and Mrs. Agnes (Frank) Carlyle of Siloam, Mrs. Agnes (Olin) Poindexter of Elkin, Miss Mozelle Johnson and Mrs. Audrey (John) Scott of Siloam; a daughter-in-law, Kaye Johnson of Lenoir; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Hubert '`Johnny’‘ Johnson. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Siloam Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Faw. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and family at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, and other times at Mrs. Johnson’s daughter, Virginia Peele, Hogans Creek Road, Siloam. Mrs. Mary Fowler Johnson, 88, of Arbor Acres died in her home Jan. 23, 2001. Mrs. Johnson was born Dec. 25, 1912, in Pilot Mountain to the late Mr. Oscar Thomas (O. T.) Fowler Sr. and Mrs. Daisy Ashburn Fowler. Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Greensboro College and the New York School of Interior Design. She was a prominent interior designer and owned her own business, Mary Johnson, Design Consultant. In her early years, she worked for WSJS Radio as one to the narrators for the Children’s Story Hour and loved volunteering her time to the Little Theatre. Mary was a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and examples of her creative ability and elegant style can be found in many fine homes and business throughout the southeast. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist, Winston-Salem Symphony Guild, Twin City Club, past president of N.C. Medical Auxiliary and was active in the restoration of R.J. Reynolds Auditorium. When Mary was not designing interiors, traveling the world or visiting with her grandchildren, she could be found sculpting a piece of clay. She was the wife of the late Dr. Paul W. Johnson and mother-in-law to the late CDR John C. Scull U.S.N. Surviving are her daughters, Daca Thomas and Maripaul Scull Cosper and their husbands, Ray and Jim; four grandchildren, Lindsay Thomas, Rian Thomas, John Scull and Jim Cosper; two brothers, O.F. Fowler and O.T. Fowler Jr.; and four sisters, Irene Gambill, Mabel Jones, Margaret Macklin and Ruth Lindsay. The family will receive friends from 7t o 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26 at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at Centenary United Methodist. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery. WALNUT COVE — Mrs. Francis Miller Jones, 94, formerly of Ashe County, died Thursday morning, Jan. 25, 2001, at Walnut Cove Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral service. Mrs. Jones was born in Ashe County on March 9, 1906, to Ben Caudle Miller and Katie Alma Eller Miller. She was a schoolteacher. Her husband, Lee Scott Jones, preceded her in death. Nora Lucy Graybeal Lovill, daughter of William Baxter and Maggie Austin Graybeal, passed away Jan. 24, 2001. Ms. Lovill, who was 107 years old, was the widow of W.R. Lovill of Boone. Her children are Peggy Lovill Andrade and the late Robert Lovill. Her surviving siblings are Pearl G. Farthing, Grace G. Rauhof and Frank Graybeal. Ms. Lovill also had four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was a loving, devoted, loyal family matriarch who will be sorely missed.

EAST BEND — Mrs. Blanche P. Matthews, 84, of 3228 Smithtown Road died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at her home. She was born in Yadkin County on Aug. 13, 1916, to Calvin Enos and Laura Ann Mathis Pilcher. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked at several local restaurants and delivered meals in the East Bend community. Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Matthews; a sister; and two brothers. Surviving are her children, Mrs. Virgie (Dee) Callahan of Pfafftown, Dr. Linda McKay of Windsor, Ontario; Calvin Matthews of Charlotte, Dottie (Jerry) Cornelius, Keith (Sherry) Matthews of East Bend and Mark (Melinda) Matthews of Greensboro; a sister, Mrs. Lillian Reich of Lewisville; and eight grandchildren, DeAnn Sibert, Johnanna McKay, Haley Cornelius, Reid Matthews, a very special granddaughter, Amanda Matthews, Matthew Cornelius, Alice Matthews and Laura Matthews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by the Rev. Sarah Kalish. The body will lie in state from 2 to 2:30. Burial will follow in the Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday evening at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hazel Carter Moser, 87, of State Road died Thursday afternoon Jan. 25, 2001 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. John Attaway and the Rev. Bency Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. Moser was born in Surry County July 5, 1913, to Rufus J. and Alice Hanes Carter. She was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert O. Moser and a son, Steven Moser. Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn (Doug) Norris of State Road; a son, Paul (Mary) Moser of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Scott Norris of State Road and Steven Norris of Winston-Salem; a sister, Marie Nixon of Elkin. The family wishes to thank the staff at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center for the loving care that our mother received. Mrs. Willie Lee Steaple Noble, 84, of 600 Pitts St. passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at her residence following a period of illness. She was a native of Abbeyville, S.C. born Dec. 7, 1916, the daughter of the late John and Janie Wilson Steaple. She was a charter member of the Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church, where she was a missionary and a member of the senior choir. She was a retired employee of Wake Forest University and was a member of the Happy Hill Gardens Community Club. She was preceded in death by both husbands, Boyd Lee Archie Sr. and John Willie Noble. She is survived by two sons, Boyd (Juanita) Archie of Winston-Salem and Bobby Ray (Brenda) Noble of Bremerton, Wash.; six grandchildren, a devoted granddaughter, Cynthia A. Coles, Calvin Drummond and Carmen Myers, Cedric Archie all of Winston-Salem and Charlie Noble and Tiffany Noble of Bremerton; six great-grandchildren, including a dear great-grandson, John Coles; a sister-in-law, Alzie Steaple of Washington, Ga.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church with the Rev. W.M. Purvis officiating. Interment will be in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
