PEOPLES
Mrs. Beatrice B. Peoples, 93, of 2 N.E. 30th St., passed at an early hour Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a short illness. She was born in Kingstree, S.C. on Feb. 28, 1907, to the late Joseph V. and Emma Cooper Barr. She later relocated to Winston-Salem where she was employed with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., and retired after 40 years of service. She was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist where she was a member of the adult Sunday school class and the United Methodist Women Group, serving faithfully until her health failed. In the community she was a member of the Greenway Ideal Community Club. Mrs. Peoples was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Johnny Adams Peoples on April 1, 1969. She was also preceded in death by a sister; four brothers; and a half brother. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Pastor Donald Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. Surviving is a son, Joseph B. James; a daughter-in-law, Martha C. James both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four grandchildren, Maurice James of Raleigh, Miriam Heath, Melvin James and a very devoted granddaughter, Marilyn James all of Winston-Salem; two nephews, John Barr of Bronx, N.Y., and the Rev. Willie J. Barr, Florence, S.C.; four nieces, Annie James Reid of Brooklyn, Eliza Robinson of Camden, N.J., Mary Pressley of Washington, D.C., and Rose Mary West of Winston-Salem; and other nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, cousins, sisters-in-law, relatives and friends. Also surviving is a special friend, Lois Crosby, friends of the 30th Street and Greenway community along with her loving animals: her dog '`Rusty’‘ and her cat '`Smokey’‘. The family may be contacted and the cortege will assemble and leave from the residence at 1 p.m. Saturday. The family of Mrs. Beatrice Peoples wishes to thank Dr.’s. PERRY-LEATH
Mrs. Beverly Lynette Perry-Leath, 36, of 2713 Stable Hill Trail, Kernersville passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended period of illness. Born in Henderson Aug. 6, 1964, to Lewis Arch Perry and the late Louvenia Lewis Perry, she was educated in the public schools of Vance County. She held an AAS degree from Vance Granville Community College, was a graduate of Winston-Salem State University with a BA degree. She was enrolled in the graduate studies program of Appalachian State University, Mrs. Leath retired after 10 years of service to the City of Winston-Salem as an information systems analyst. She was of the Baptist faith having joined the Spring Street Baptist Church in Henderson as a child. She became a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. where she served as a member of the board of deaconess, the Sunday church school and the Inspirational Choir. She is survived by her husband, Robert Leath; a daughter, Samantha Leath; two sons, Christopher Leath and Joel Leath; her father, Lewis Arch Perry of Henderson; three sisters, Maxine Banks (Ellis) of Richmond, Va., Anita Perry of Raleigh and Kathryn Perry of California; four brothers, Cecil Perry (Judy) of Washington, D.C., Joel Perry (Cheryl) of Ohio, Ronald Perry (Janice) of Maryland and Kelvin Perry of Raleigh; her father-in-law, James A. Leath, Sr. of Burlington; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Warren (Jerry) and Susan Leath; two brothers-in-law, James Leath, Jr., all of Burlington and William Leath of Charlotte; 16 nieces, nine nephews and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. officiating. The family visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church. Interment will follow in the Ilong Baptist Church Cemetery in Kittrell. (Russell)

Mrs. Pansy Shaver Swing, 83, of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Swing was born in Winston-Salem on April 16, 1917, the daughter of Carlie Columbus and Eva Heitman Shaver. She was married to the late Hollis Cleo Swing. They were owners and operators of an electrical contracting company and were charter members of Buckrow Baptist Church in Hampton, Va.
Locally she attended Waughtown Baptist Church. Surviving are four sisters, Edna S. Temples and Vivian S. Rothrock of Winston-Salem, Evelyn S. John of Tamerack, Fla., and Rachel S. McKnight of Kernersville; and a number of nieces and nephews. Many friends will miss her. The family will receive friends at Vogler & Sons Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
WALL
RURAL HALL — Mrs. Oneda B. Wall, 68, died at Forsyth Medical Center on Tuesday Jan. 23, 2001, following a period of declining health. A native of Stokes County, she was born on May 26, 1932, to the late Curner '`C.B’‘ and Zenobia Simmons Boyles. Mrs. Wall was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She loved to play bingo with her friends at White Lake. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister and friend. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wall was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Billy Raye Wall of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie Bryan and husband Jeff of Germanton; two sons, Steve Wall and wife Janet and Stan Wall of Rural Hall; four grandchildren, Amber and Ashleigh Bryan and Brandon and Michael Wall; two sisters, Georgia '`Shortie’‘ Hall and husband Rupert and Beulah '`Boots’‘ Boles all of King; a special brother-in-law, T.A. Bennett of Rural Hall; a half brother, Ira Boyles and wife Mary Ann of Stanley; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Dean and the Rev. Randy Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. WHITAKER
HAMPTONVILLE — Clayton H. Whitaker, 65, of Hamptonville died Wednesday, Jan. 24 at Hoots Memorial Hospital. Mr. Whitaker was born July 7, 1935, in Yadkin County to Walter B. and Lelah Ladd Whitaker. He was a retired tobacco farmer and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Hubert James Whitaker and Mack Arthur Whitaker; and two sisters, Hester L. Whitaker and Minnie Wood. Surviving are a sister, Ola Cook of Hamptonville; three brothers, J. Roy Whitaker of Hamptonville, Samuel (Janet) Whitaker of Hamptonville and Jerry (Gail) Whitaker of Johnson City, Tenn.; three nephews; and four nieces. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville, by the Rev. Don Ball. Burial will follow in the Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at the funeral home.
WRAY
Beulah Gray Woods Wray, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully at her home Tuesday Jan. 23, 2001. Although she will be greatly missed, her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now with her Lord Jesus Christ. Mrs. Wray was born in Stokes County on May 27, 1918, to Emmet Lee and Virginia Shelton Woods. She attended Mayodan High School and played forward on the basketball team for three years, scoring 21 of 25 free throws in one memorable contest. In 1934, she married William Harold Wray, who preceded her in death in Oct. 1973. After 30 years of service, Mrs. Wray retired from P.H. Hanes Knitwear Co. in 1983. A highlight of her retirement years was traveling to visit her sister Maggie in Baltimore and her grandson, Billy in Virginia Beach. She also enjoyed local outings with special friends and family. Mrs. Wray was an active member of North Winston Church of God throughout much of her life, where she served faithfully in the nursery. She attributed all blessings in her life as gifts from God and was forever devoted to him. Mrs. Wray was preceded in death by her husband and a son, William Jack Wray, as well as seven siblings, Carrie Woods Morris, Nellie Woods Reid, Martha Woods Gatewood, Rosie Lee Woods, Levi Woods, Jim Bill Woods, and John Taft Woods. Surviving are a son, Gene Harold Wray (Mary) of Rural Hall; six grandchildren, Eunice Wray Monroe (Bill) of Palm Bay, Fla., William David Wray (Michelle) of Virginia Beach, Cindy Wray Hodnett (Dan) of Clemmons, Robin Wray Howell (Allen) of Mocksville, Dr. Kathy Wray Richardson (Samuel) of Greensboro and Michael Gene Wray of Rural Hall; eight great-grandchildren, Candace, Kara, Cody, Macy, Dakota, Delaney, Alexander and Elizabeth; two sisters, Maggie Woods Matthews and Bertie Woods Martin; and a dear niece and nephew, Lois and Steve Monk of Winston-Salem. To comply with Mrs. Wray’s wishes, there will be no formal visitation. A service for family, close friends and neighbors will be on Saturday Jan. 27, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. The Rev. Riley Puckett will officiate. Pallbearers will include three nephews, Alton and Steve Martin, and Dan Gatewood; two great-nephews, Steven C. Monk and Trenton Gatewood; and three grandsons-in-law. Private interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers will be welcomed or memorials may be made to the Billy Graham Association.
AMOS
WALNUT COVE — Mr. James Harold Amos, 64, of Walnut Cove, died Friday at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Amos was born in Stokes County May 13, 1936, to the late James Russell and Maggie Joyce Amos. He was a retired machine operator for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of Isom Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Aubrey Dillon Amos and Charlie Thomas Amos. Survivors include his wife, Betty Mabe Amos of the home; one son, Michael Amos of the home; one daughter, Kimberley Dawn Vogler and husband Josh of Pinnacle; one sister, Ruth Cook and husband Ervin of Sandy Ridge. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Isom Baptist Church. Rev. Chester Montgomery and Rev. Ralph Mitchell will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove. There will be no visitation at the home. MOREHEAD CITY — Christine King Bingham, 87, passed away Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Bingham taught for 35 years at the Stokes and Watauga County school systems. She was a graduate of Appalachian State University, a member of Pinnacle United Methodist Church and had received the Governor’s Certificate of Appreciation. Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca Bingham Mast of Morehead City; two sons, James Robert Bingham of Boone and William S. Bingham Jr. of Davidson; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sisters Lucille King Wall of Pinnacle and Alyne King Norman of Pilot Mountain. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Pinnacle United Methodist Church, Pinnacle. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home Saturday Jan. 27, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pinnacle United Methodist Church, P.O. Mrs. Viola Crews Davis, 95, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the Willowbrook Health Care Center in Yadkinville. She was born Dec. 29, 1905, in Forsyth County to Bessie L. Markland and James Brantley Crews. Mrs. Davis was of the Moravian faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Si Davis and a grandchild, Lisa Davis; three sisters and; a brother. Surviving are, two sons, James B. Davis (wife Carolyn) of Advance and John W. Davis (wife Nancy) of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Nancy D. Woosley (husband Tommy) of Hickory; a stepdaughter, Doris Yontz; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three step grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Stuart Zimmerman and Dr. Wayde Goodall officiating. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Saturday at the funeral home.
