LEXINGTON (North Davidson County) — Mr. Mac Arthur England, 58, of 232 Terrace Drive died Jan. 26, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended illness. He was born March 18, 1942, in Forsyth County to the late George Dewey and Pansy Ramsey England. Until his illness, he was employed by Salem Logistics Inc. and formerly by McLean Trucking Co. for nearly 20 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Stanleyville. Mr. England is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Wall England of 22 years; a daughter, Sherry Kimel and husband, Timmy, of Tobaccoville; two stepdaughters, Wendi Shutt and husband Pete, of Winston-Salem and Tara Wilson of Lexington; a grandchild, Sammy Kimel, two stepgrandchildren, Blake and Mackenzie Shutt; four sisters, Priscilla Clinard of Winston-Salem, Pansy Harvey and Fay Hendrix of Rural Hall and Edith Helms of York, S.C.; three brothers, Terry England of King, James England of Weaverville, N.C. and Ken England of Nashville, Tenn. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28 at First Baptist Church of Stanleyville with the Rev. Jonathan Rogers and the Rev. Robert Thurston officiating. EVERHART
Carl Burnis Everhart, 93, formerly of U.S. Highway 52, Winston-Salem died at 5:20 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28 at Faith Missionary Alliance Church by the Rev. Michael Gates, the Rev. Don Lyerly and the Rev. Albert Smith. Burial will be in Forest Hill Memorial Park. He was born Oct. 17, 1907, in Davidson County to James E. Everhart and Louvina Latham Everhart. He married Lettie Sharpe Everhart on Feb. 10, 1933, who survives. He was retired from the U.S. Civil Service Customs Office in Winston-Salem. He attended Catawba College. Mr. Everhart was a charter member of Faith Missionary Alliance Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and a trustee. He was a member of the Sunshine Senior Citizens Club and served as president for many years. He was preceded in death by five brothers, James E. '`June’‘ Everhart Jr., Fred Everhart, Pat Everhart, Walter Everhart and Ward Everhart and five sisters, Mamie Estelle Everhart Koontz, Mary Everhart Hinkle, Lois Everhart Newsome, Zell Everhart Sowers and Addie Mae Everhart Leonard. Surviving are his wife, Lettie Sharpe Everhart of the Homestead in Winston-Salem; sisters-in-law Mrs. Frances (Ward) Everhart of Lexington, Mrs. Lillie (Pat) Everhart of Siler City and Mrs. Ruth (June) Everhart of Charlotte; and nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel. GILLEY
Mr. William H. Gilley of Brighton Gardens, Winston-Salem, went to his rest Jan. 24, 2001, at the age of 87. Mr. Gilley was born March 1, 1913, in Virginia to Mary and William Houston Gilley. Mr. Gilley was formerly the sole owner and operator of Gilley Fuel Oil Co. in Winston-Salem for 40 years, serving the Forsyth City/County schools, Wake Forest University, the Winston-Salem downtown area as well as Winston-Salem residential. He was also involved in real estate and investments with Bartram Investment Properties. Surviving William H. Gilley are his wife, Delsie Brinkley Gilley of Winston-Salem; his son, James R. Gilley and wife Sylvia Gilley of Dallas, Texas; his daughter, Linda Gilley Cox of Winston-Salem; his grandchildren, Michael Gilley and wife Donna Gilley of Winston-Salem, Beth Gilley of Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Nita Ann Dry and husband Todd Dry of Singer Island, Fla., Mrs. Michelle Winifred Larking and husband Ken Larking of Hickory, Mrs. Elizabeth Anne Daum and husband Shiloh Daum of Chapel Hill, and Trent W. Cox of Raleigh; five great-grandchildren, Caroline Gilley of Dallas, Texas, Brandon Dry and Chandler Dry of Singer Island, Fla., and Gray Gilley and Mackenzie Gilley of Winston-Salem; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Gilley was a long-standing, active member of Northwest Baptist Church where he had many caring Christian friends. He was a loving husband and a wonderful father and grandfather and was dearly loved by his family. He was a gentle man who always greeted you with a smile. He took great pride and joy in children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by Pastor Eugene Brinkley and the Rev. Randy McKinney of Northwest Baptist Church. Mrs. Margaret Mendenhall Hartman, 82, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was born Nov. 4, 1918, in Davidson County to Austin Franklin and Ida Olivia Foltz Mendenhall. Mrs. Hartman was a lifelong member of Friedberg Moravian Church. She worked at Bowman Gray School of Medicine and Thalheimers for several years and the Youth Center for 12 years before retiring. She was the widow of Fred E. Hartman who died in 1953. Surviving are a daughter, Olivia J. Brewer and husband James of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Kathleen D. Brewer; and two sisters, Rachel M. Thompson of Winston-Salem and JoAnn M. Hocutt of Knightsdale. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Friedberg Moravian Church Graveyard with the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. LAKE CITY S.C. — Virgil Tyrone Holder, 60, of Johnsonville Highway died early Thursday morning, Jan. 25, 2001, in a Lake City hospital after a brief illness. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Maple Grove United Methodist Church in Mount Airy. Mr. Holder was born in Surry County a son of Harland Virgil Holder and the late Betty Beatrice Hodges Holder. He attended Appalachian State University in Boone and the National Business College in Roanoke, Va. He was a member of Johnsonville Economic Development Committee, the Economic Development Board of Florence County, S.C., the board of Anderson Brothers State Bank of Mullins, the Round Peak Lodge #168 A.F.M., the York Rite Bodies, the Shrine Temple and the Old Johnsonville United Methodist Church. He was founder and former owner of Pine Ridge Hardware Inc. in Mount Airy and Pee Dee Hardware in Johnsonville. Surviving are his wife, Mary Lynn Moore Holder of the home; his father on Mount Airy; three daughters, Sanda Lynn McFadyen of Garner, Susan Michelle Holder and Mary Elizabeth Holder of Johnsonville; a son, Daniel Sheppard Holder of the home; two grandchildren, Cameron Layne Holder and Brandon Heath Holder of Johnsonville; a sister, Nelda Gray Goings of Mount Airy; a brother, Tony Miles Holder of Lowgap; and also of the family and a business associate, Henry Linkous of Johnsonville. SILOAM — Mrs. Julia Lucinda Estep Johnson, 90, passed away Jan. 24, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Johnson was born May 11, 1910, in Wilkes County to David Brian Estep and Sarah Jeanette Marlow Estep. She was married to James Edgar Johnson, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Siloam Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Virginia J. Peele and Mrs. Agnes (Frank) Carlyle of Siloam, Mrs. Avanell (Olin) Poindexter of Elkin, Miss Mozelle Johnson and Mrs. Audrey (John) Scott of Siloam; a daughter-in-law, Kaye Johnson of Lenoir; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Hubert '`Johnny’‘ Johnson. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Siloam Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Faw. Mrs. Mary Fowler Johnson, 88, of Arbor Acres died in her home Jan. 23, 2001. Mrs. Johnson was born Dec. 25, 1912, in Pilot Mountain to the late Mr. Oscar Thomas (O. T.) Fowler Sr. and Mrs. Daisy Ashburn Fowler. Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Greensboro College and the New York School of Interior Design. She was a prominent interior designer and owned her own business, Mary Johnson, Design Consultant. In her early years, she worked for WSJS Radio as one to the narrators for the Children’s Story Hour and loved volunteering her time to the Little Theater. Mary was a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and examples of her creative ability and elegant style can be found in many fine homes and business throughout the southeast. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist, Winston-Salem Symphony Guild, Twin City Club, past president of NC Medical Auxiliary and was active in the restoration of R.J. Reynolds Auditorium. When Mary was not designing interiors, traveling the world or visiting with her grandchildren, she could be found sculpting a piece of clay. She was the wife of the late Dr. Paul W. Johnson and mother-in-law to the late CDR John C. Scull U.S.N. Surviving are her daughters, Daca Thomas and Maripaul Scull Cosper and their husbands, Ray and Jim; four grandchildren, Lindsay Thomas, Rian Thomas, John Scull and Jim Cosper; two brothers, O.F. Fowler and O.T. Fowler Jr.; and four sisters, Irene Gambill, Mabel Jones, Margaret Macklin and Ruth Lindsay. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at Centenary United Methodist. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery. LEXINGTON — Marcella Conrad Kennedy, 79, of Lexington, died Friday Jan. 26, 2001, at 12:55 p.m. in Lexington Health Care. Mrs. Kennedy was born in Davidson County on Feb. 7, 1921, to Adam Efrid Conrad and Ada Byerly Conrad. She was a former employee of Kayby Mills in Thomasville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Foy Kennedy Sr in 1993. Survivors are son Foy Kennedy of Lexington; daughter Linda Blakley and husband Rev. Ronald Blakley of Trinity; grandchildren Angela and Kevin Blakley; brothers John Conrad, Paul Conrad, Clyde Conrad, Carl Conrad and Cromer Conrad of Lexington; and sister Betty Roberts of Lexington. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church where she was a member. The burial will be at Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery. ELKIN — Mr. Bruce Renegar Key, 52, of 1657 Poplar Springs Road died Thursday evening, Jan. 25, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bessie’s Chapel Baptist Church by Rev. Ralph Grose. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Mr. Key was born in Surry Co. March 18, 1948, to Sam L. and Audrey Renegar Key. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Bessie’s Chapel Baptist Church. Mr. Key was former disc jocky for radio stations WAIR in Winston-Salem and WGAU in Atlanta and was formerly employed by Phillips Van Heusen in Jonesville. He was preceded in death by his father, Sam L. Key and two sisters, Wanda and Becky Key. Surviving are his mother, Audrey R. Key of the home. The family suggests that any memorials be made to Bessie’s Chapel Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.
LOVILL
Nora Lucy Graybeal Lovill, daughter of William Baxter and Maggie Austin Graybeal, passed away Jan. 24, 2001. Ms. Lovill, who was 107 years old, was the widow of W.R. Lovill of Boone. Her children are Peggy Lovill Andrade and the late Robert Lovill. Her surviving siblings are Pearl G. Farthing, Grace G. Rauhof and Frank Graybeal. Ms. Lovill also had four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was a loving, devoted, loyal family matriarch who will be sorely missed.
