HAIRSTON
Mr. Weldon Nathaniel Hairston, 84, of 113-15 34th Avenue, Corona, Queens, New York, passed away on Sunday, September 19, 1999 at the Coler Memorial Hospital, Roosevelt Island, New York following a period of illness. He was born November 3, 1914 in Winston-Salem, N.C. to the late Peter Burl Hairston and Maggie Brown Hairston. He was educated in the Winston-Salem City School System and graduated from Atkins High School, Class of 1932. He furthered his studies at the Midway Technical School of New York, successfully meeting the requirements for Tailoring and Pattern Design. He served in the United States Army. Weldon lived most of his adult life in Corona, New York where he retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He is also a brother of the Meridian Lodge, No.93, F.&A.M. of New York City. Weldon leaves to mourn his sister, Cleotis Wilkes; a favorite nephew-in-law, Eldridge Alston both of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Friday, September 24, 1999 at 1:30 p.m. from the Chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with Reverend James Acolatse officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1:00 until 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. (RUSSELL)

HALL
Michael L. Hall, passed away suddenly, September 19, 1999. He was born in Danville, Va. the son of Leonard S. Hall of Roswell, N.M. and the late Mildred Pattissal Hall. He was general manager of Alan Ferguson Associates. He is also survived by two brothers Rick and Steve Hall of Corpus Christi, Texas and his loving companion Shelby. He was a member of Metropolitan Community Church of Winston-Salem. Michael will be dearly missed by numerous friends whose lives he touched in many ways. Memorial services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of the Cumby Family Funeral Service, 1015 Eastchester Dr., High Point. Memorials may be directed to The William-DeLashmett Corssing, 2101 A Aileen Court, High Point, N.C. 27265.

KING
Mrs. Beatrice Gicking King, 74, of Salisbury, died Wednesday, September 22, 1999 at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury after a serious illness of ten days. She was born September 16, 1924 in Hazleton, Pa. to the late Beatrice Hale Gicking and the late Charles F. Gicking. Mrs. King was a 1943 graduate of Hazelton, Pa. High School. She attended Perry Business School and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. She was a veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Army. Mrs. King retired after 29 1/2 years with the Salisbury V.A Medical Center. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, was chaplain and an officer with the Salisbury Women of the Moose, a member of the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post & Auxillary, N.A.R.F.E., the treasurer with the local AARP, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, she was the co-founder of the Patient Helper's Club, and member of the Rowan Helping Ministries. She was also appointed to the Rowan County Adult Care Community Advisory Committee. Her husband, Everette King preceded her in death November 3, 1991. Surviving are three sons, Arthur Edward King of Winston-Salem, Anderson Eugene King of Lexington, and Charles Everette King of Salisbury; two daughters, Beatrice King Goodnight of Salisbury and Beth King Bost of Rockwell, N.C.; one sister, Miriam Macek of Great Falls, Va.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 25, 1999 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Salisbury, N.C. conducted by Rev. Virginia Herring. Burial will be in the Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury, N.C. with military rites conducted by the Rowan Co. Veterans Council. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, September 24, 1999 at Lyerly Funeral Home, 515 S. Main St., Salisbury, N.C. and family other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 131 West Council St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

LAING
KERNERSVILLE -- Mr. Luther Raymond Laing, Jr., 66, of 6355 Baux Mt. Rd., Winston-Salem, died Thursday, September 23, 1999, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Baltimore County, Maryland a son of the late Luther R. Laing, Sr. and Margaret McCormick Laing. Mr. Laing was a member of the Oscar Joyner VFW Post #5352 and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Survivors are his wife, Frances Anita Maxcy Laing of the home; three daughters, Lora McMichael of Stokesdale, Teresa Lea Stafford of Kernersville, and Shelia Kay Gordon of Kernersville; five grandchildren, Todd, Chuck, and Chris McMichael, Jeffery Stafford, and Tyler Gordon; and his mother-in-law, Gladys Copley of Martinsville, Va. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 25, 1999 at the Hayworth-Miller-Chapel by Father Joseph Tustin. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory, Walkertown. The family will receive friends Friday 7-9 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home, Kernersville. Memorials may be directed to The Oscar Joyner VFW Post 5352, P.O. LEMONS
BURLINGTON -- Carrine V. Lemons of Burlington, N.C. passed away Tuesday, September 21, 1999. A mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, full of love for The Heavenly Father and her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, great grandson, Jordan, and her husband, Talmadge Hughes Lemons. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Jim Welch of Lewisville; two granddaughters, Leia Hamlyn and husband David of Randleman, N.C. and Kendra Mobley and husband, Joe, of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; three great granddaughters, Chelsea, Emma, and Victoria; a special niece, Malinda Mansfield of Burlington. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 25, 1999 at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory in Kernersville, N.C. The family requests no flowers. MCMANUS
MOORESVILLE -- Mrs. Christine Barber McManus, 74, of Dickens court, Mooresville, formerly of Wilkes County, widow of William Emerson McManus, died Thursday, September 23, 1999 at her home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11:00 at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Steve Snipes officiating. Graveside services will be held Saturday, 4:00 at Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Charlotte. Mrs. McManus was born in York County, S.C., December 23, 1924 to Osmond and Jane Sims Hamilton Barber. Mrs. McManus was a long time member of the Piedmont Kennel Club of Charlotte. She was also a member of the American Shetland Sheepdog Association. Mrs. McManus and her husband bred, raised, and showed Shelties for many years. Mrs. McManus was a member of the Humane Society. She was a member and officer of Rendezvous Mountain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. McManus is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Mary Vilinda) Smith of Mooresville and two grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro from 7:00 until 9:00 Friday night. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Crossnore School, P.O. PAINTER
HARMONY -- Mr. James Alton Painter, 61, of 1324 Tabor Rd., died Thursday morning at Davis Community Hospital. Born October 13, 1937 in Rowan County he was a son of the late William A. Painter and Edith Allen Painter. He was a retired construction superintendent and loved farming and raising cattle. Survivors include his wife, the former Patricia York; two sons, David L. Painter of Harmony and John J. Duchinski of Statesville; four daughters, Mrs. Kelly P. Livengood of Harmony, Mrs. Linda D. Shrum of Yadkinville, Mrs. Susan D. Smyth of Statesville, and Mrs. Patricia D. Holland of Olin, N.C.; and four grandsons, David A. Painter, Dylan Smyth, Timothy Painter, and Michael Blansett. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Norma Lankford, Mrs. Mary Lynn Swazy, and Mrs. Carol Hallyburton all of Cleveland, N.C. Funeral services are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at Reavis Funeral Home of Harmony Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service . Rev. James E. Cloer will officiate. The family will assemble at the residence of the deceased. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Macedonia United Methodist Church Cemetery with full Military Rites accorded at the service by Hiddenite V.F.W. Post #10,000. PEAY
MADISON -- Mrs. Mary Tuttle Peay, 80, of 266 Smothers Road, died Wednesday, September 22, 1999, at her home. The funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 24, 1999 at Comer's Chapel Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Peay was born on November 24, 1918 to Thomas Wade and Lula Paris Tuttle. She was a member of Comer's Chapel Baptist Church and was a retired secretary from Burlington Industries. Survivors include her husband, Robert C. Peay, Sr. of the home; son, Bob Peay and wife, Sylvia of Boone, N.C.; daughter, Kathy P. Amos and husband, Ronald of Madison; four grandchildren, Mary Katherine Amos of Greensboro, Wayne Amos Of Madison; special and dear friend, Kathy P. Everette of Madison; brothers, Tom Tuttle of Madison, Ronald Tuttle of Florida, and Bobby Tuttle of Hendersonville; her sisters, Margie T. Duncan of Ridgeway, Va. and Katherine T. England of Morganton, N.C. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, P.O. Box 281, Wentworth, N.C. 27375.

PENDRY
HAYS -- Mr. William Virgil ''Bill'' Pendry, 88, of Airport Road, Hays, widower of Lora Bell Shumate Pendry, died Thursday, September 23, 1999 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be held Saturday 11:00 a.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church with the Rev. Julius Blevins officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial will be in Round Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Pendry was born September 11, 1911 in Wilkes County to Grover Cleveland and Fannie Ballard Pendry. He was retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Odd Fellows. He is survived by one son, Phil Pendry of Randleman; two sisters, Dovie Brown and Rosalie Prevette both of Hays; one brother, Edward Pendry of Hays; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Friday night from 6:30-8:30. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain View Baptist Church, c/o Hettie Sebastian, 1109 Little Mountain Church Road, North Wilkesboro, N.C. 28659.

RAU
Mrs. Pauline (Polly) Highfill Rau, 96, of 3481 York Road, died Tuesday, September 21, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Rau was a native of Siloam Springs, Arkansas where she was born May 14, 1903 to C. Dona and Lou Ellen Rodgers Highfill. She was a graduate of Kansas State Teachers College and taught in the public schools of Kansas for five years. She was married on July 20, 1928 to Mr. Irving Julius Rau of Chicago, Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Rau moved to Winston-Salem in 1946 with the first group of Western Electric families. Mr. Rau preceded his wife in death in 1961. Mrs. Rau had been a member of First Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, the White Shrine and had loved and supported the arts in the Winston-Salem area for many years. Mrs. Rau was also preceded in death by a son, Ronald Charles Rau. She is survived by two daughters, Rodgeryn (Mrs. Victor I. Flow, Jr.), and Paula (Mrs. James R. Parks); and a daughter-in-law, Linda V. Rau of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Donald E. Flow, Ralph A. Flow, Marie F. Arcuri, Kristin B. Davies, Julia P. (Jill) Baucom, Ronald C. Rau, Jr., Julie R. Brad, Karen R. Kahn, David L. Rau and Michael E. Rau; two step-grandchildren, Mark B. and Merrill B. Vanoy and twenty-two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a dear companion of twenty-one years, Mrs. Flora Flow. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 24, 1999 at First Presbyterian Church by Dr. Jeff White. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Vogler's Reynolda Road Chapel. Memorials may be made to The Polly Rau Memorial Fund, % First Presbyterian Church, 300 North Cherry Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
