WELCOME -- Donna Virginia Leonard Gregory, 50, left her earthly abode and received the gift of eternal life from her Heavenly Father Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County on Dec. 25, 1949, to Fred Ovel and Ila Knouse Leonard. She graduated from North Davidson High School in 1968. She was a member of Center United Methodist Church in Welcome. She worked for the Bahnson Co. for 15 years. She resided at SunBridge Nursing Facility since 1992. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Fred Leonard. Surviving are her mother and father; a daughter, Michelle Gregory of Welcome; her aunts, Violet Knouse of Arcadia and Frances Leonard of Welcome; and her uncle, Dale Leonard of Welcome. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel , with the Rev. Larry Jent and the Rev. David Baity officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, in the Center United Methodist Church Cemetery, Welcome. HAIRE
HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Mr. Robert Thomas Haire, 78, a native of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at Vencor Hospital in Coral Gables, Fla. Known as Bob, he was the son of Clyde and Sidney Marion Haire and the brother of Benny Haire, who preceded him in death. He attended Winston-Salem city schools, graduating from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1941, where he was president of his senior class and active in varsity football and track. He was in the 8th Air Force s in World War II, serving in the European Theater. Following his tour of duty, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned his law degree. For years he was a legal contract administrator for Texas Instruments before entering private practice in Dallas. Upon returning to Winston-Salem in 1974, he was administrative assistant at the Salvation Army Community Treatment Center until his retirement in 1988 to Florida. Bob's loyalty to Reynolds High School and Big Band music of the '40s never diminished in that he underwrote the costs of bringing Big Bands to Winston-Salem with all the proceeds going to the restoration of Reynolds High School auditorium. Survivors include his former wife, Margaret Elizabeth Hege Haire of Raleigh; his daughter, Renee Haire; a son-in-law, Timothy Lynch; and their four children, all of Arlington, Va.; a son, Steve Haire of Homestead, Fla.; a brother, William Haire of Bellaire, Fla.; three nephews and a niece; and many friends in Winston-Salem, including Mary Thompson Reavis. A private memorial service will be held in Florida at a later date.
IBRAHAM
Mrs. Sue Abrams Ibraham, 87, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Walnut Cove Health Care Center. She was born July 4, 1913, in Carnegie, Pa., to Alex and Miriam Abrams. Mrs. Ibraham was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a Girl Scout leader. She was a life member of the United Methodist Women and the Martha Bell Tally Circle. Mrs. Ibraham was a substitute teacher for the Forsyth County Schools and retired from N.C. Baptist Hospital. She attended the University of Pittsburgh, where she met her beloved husband, Prince, who along with a daughter-in-law, Alice Ibraham; two brothers, Michael Abrams and Lou Abrams; two sisters, Anne Kirker and Betty Silverman, preceded her in death. Survivors include three sons, Bryce Ibraham, Jack Ibraham and Gerald Ibraham and wife Ann; four grandchildren, Dr. G. Jason Ibraham, Karen Rash, Jack Ibraham Jr. and Kathy Muldovan; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Abrams of Ohio; and a sister, Elizabeth Myer of Illinois. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Forsyth Memorial Park. LANKFORD
Mrs. Margaret Lankford, 76, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a period of declining health. A native of Stokes County, she was born April 12, 1924, to the late Basley W. and Laura Smith Welch. Mrs. Lankford was a faithful member of Woodland Baptist Church for 21 years and was a member of the Couples Sunday school class. She was retired from McCrory Corporation. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Hassel Jack Lankford of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Eugene Lankford and wife Brenda of Winston-Salem; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Lankford Silvers and husband Barry of Mount Holly; three grandchildren, Christina and Brian Lankford and Matthew Silvers; four sisters; two brothers; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at Woodland Baptist Church, with Pastor Tim Gammons and the Rev. R. Zeno Groce officiating. YADKINVILLE -- Mrs. Pauline Brown McCormick, 87, formerly of East Bend, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born in Yadkin County on Sept. 5, 1912, to the late Daniel Oliver Brown and Martha Alice Williams Brown. She was married to the late Charles Edward McCormick Sr. A homemaker, she loved flowers and needlepoint. Mrs. McCormick was a member of Union Cross Friends Church in Yadkinville. Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn M. Hall (R.T.) of Pfafftown; a son, Charles E. McCormick Jr. (Gladys) of East Bend; a sister, Lillian Williams of Yadkinville; a brother, Weldon ''Bill'' Brown of East Bend; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reavis Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Harold Salmons officiating. ADVANCE -- Mrs. Myrtle Myers Padgett, 91, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Dec. 17, 1908, in Forsyth County to William Sherman and Delia Hege Myers. Mrs. Padgett was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Faw Padgett. Surviving are a daughter, Becky Badgett of Advance; a grandson, Curtis Badgett and wife Jenny of Fredricksburg, Va.; and two sisters, Mabel Minor of Advance and Lucille Tinkler of Okemos, Mich. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Salem Cemetery with the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton officiating. Mr. Dan P. Pfaff, 68, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000. He is survived by his mother, Ethel Sapp Pfaff; his wife, Ellie Pfaff; two brothers, Jim (Pat) Pfaff and Jack (Peggy) Pfaff; two sisters, Dane Bryant and Mary Hill; and several nieces and nephews. DAVIDSON COUNTY -- Mr. Allen Troy Sealey, 76, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Sept. 25, 1923, in Dillon County, S.C., to Danny Emerson and Bertha Webster Sealey. Mr. Sealey was retired from Western Electric after 35 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. Mr. Sealey was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel. Surviving are his wife, Frances Brewer Sealey of the home; two daughters, Robin S. Moore and Kim S. Puckett both of Davidson County; a son, Chris Sealey of Stony Point; two stepsons, Steve Gentry of Winston-Salem and Roland Gentry of High Point; seven grandchildren, Adam, Jeremy, Jennifer, Traci, Kristen, Darren and Michael; a great-grandson, Brandon; three brothers, James Monroe Sealey of Rural Hall, Milton Sealey of Alexandria, La., and John Henry Sealey of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Dottie Browder of Winston-Salem and Gladys Henley of King; and a very special friend and neighbor, Jeff Varner. WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Lydia Call Shew, 94, of Antioch Church Road, the widow of George Shew, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at Villages of Wilkes Skilled Care. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Reavis and the Rev. Larry Lefler officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Shew was born in Wilkes County on July 22, 1906, to Hugh M. and Julia Curry Call. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. A son, Kenneth Shew; a granddaughter, Brenda Sue Prevette; and a great-grandson, Mitchell Calloway, preceded Mrs. Shew in death. She is survived by three daughters, Florence Shew Calloway of Ronda, Helen Shew Johnson of Statesville and Marie Shew Mathis of Wilkesboro; two sons, Claude Eugene Shew Sr. of Ronda and Bobby Lee Shew of Wilkesboro; a sister, Ennis Jarvis of Wilkesboro; two brothers, Clearance Call of Winston-Salem and Buel Call of Wilkesboro; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rosa Smith Sparks, 92, formerly of Broad Street in Winston-Salem, of 9865 N.C. 89 West in Westfield, left our earthly presence Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born Sept. 13, 1907 in Forsyth County to John Wesley and Susie Kinley Smith. Mrs. Sparks retired from Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co. in 1969 after 43 years of service. On Dec. 21, 1929, she married James Ernest Sparks, who preceded her in death on April 20, 1977. Also preceding her in death was an infant grandson, Donald Gray Mitchell Jr., three sisters, Lillie B. Henderson, Modean Goforth and Evelyn Smith, and a brother, Tom Smith. Survivors include a brother, Charlie Smith of King; two daughters and their husbands, Mildred and Don Mitchell of Westfield and Dorothy and Jim Godfrey of Harrison, Tenn.; three sons, James E. Sparks of Winston-Salem, William J. Sparks and wife Juanita of Pfafftown, and Robert W. Sparks and wife Peggy of King; 11 grandchildren, Sarah Danner, Sandra Lambert, Sharon Marshall, Linda Farmer, Donna Ensley, Billy and Tim Sparks, Greg and Kevin Sparks, Dale Long and Brenda Everhart, and 11 great-grandchildren.
