MILLER
Mrs. Marado Voria Nichols Miller, 95, formerly of Wilkesboro, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Miller was born in Ashe County to McClellan and Adinah Spears Nichols. One of eight children, she was predeceased by three sisters, Kiter (Shober) Phillips, Vado (Shafter) Phillips and Eulalah (Dallas) Phillips and four brothers, Morris (Maie) Nichols, Vaughn Nichols, Norwood (Nell) Nichols and Waldon ''Ronnie'' (Mozelle) Nichols. Mrs. Miller was also preceded in death by her husband, Ordan R. Miller, who passed away in 1984. Surviving are two sons, Athel Dustin (Catherine) Miller and Maynard Lee (Clara) Miller, both of Wilkesboro; two daughters, Mrs. Joyce Miller Chewning, the widow of Ralph Chewning, and Mrs. Joyce (Bobby) Davis, both of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Forsyth Memorial Park.
MILLS
PINNACLE -- Mr. William ''Bill'' Waller Mills, 82, of Pinnacle died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at his home. He was born April 28, 1917, in Patrick County, Va., to Will and Mary Waller Mills. He graduated from Redbank High School and then entered the Navy where he was a gunners mate serving in World War II. Mr. Mills was a member of Friends Union Church where he was currently serving as an Elder. He was a dedicated member of Pinnacle V.F.W. Post No. 9729 and served as quarter master for 37 years. He was a present member of Pilot Mountain V.F.W. Post No. 9436. Mr. Mills was a retired farmer and retired from Wake Forest University Maintenance Dept. after 30 years. Surviving is his wife, Clara Lawson Mills of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Frances Mills Tuttle and husband, Wayne, of King, Carolyn Mills Edwards and husband, Boyden, of Pinnacle, Kathy Mills Bottoms and husband, J.D., of Pilot Mountain and Judy Mills Holmes and husband, Timmy, of Pinnacle; seven grandchildren, Lisa Tuttle, Regina Tuttle, Cherie Bottoms Reynolds, Rodney Bottoms, Shawn Bottoms, Brandi Holmes and John Holmes; two great-grandchildren, Mitchell Dorsett and Patience Reynolds; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Hope Mills Batemen of Pilot Mountain, Lena Mills Cook of Winston-Salem, Mary Mills Taylor of Mount Airy and Alice Mills Johnson and husband, Delmer, of Mount Airy; and one brother, Jack, and wife, Jencey, of Asheville. Mr. Mills was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Mills Johnson, and one brother, Ed Mills. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Friends Union Church by Frank Huffman, pastor. Burial will be at Friends Union Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. and at other times at the Mills home. MONTGOMERY
WHITSETT, N.C. -- Robert ''Bob'' G. Montgomery, 76, of 717 N.C. 61, Whitsett, N.C., died Jan. 29, 2000, at 3 p.m. after a brief illness at Wake Forrest University-Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C. He was born in Guilford County to the late Lacy Edgar and Mary Ethel Bason Montgomery. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Tim Stevens, Pastor of Whitsett Baptist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park. Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Gladys ''Sue'' Lemonds Montgomery of the home; three sons, Dr. Ronald L. Montgomery of Swan Quarter, N.C., Steven L. Montgomery of Charlotte, formerly of Winston-Salem and Mark L. Montgomery of Burlington; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Virginia Wagoner of Browns Summit. Mr. Montgomery will remain at Lowe Funeral Home through the service. SECREST
MOUNT AIRY -- Mr. James Monroe Secrest, 83, of 127 Lovill Circle, Mount Airy, husband of Ethel Meadows Secrest, died on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Secrest was born in Surry County on July 27, 1916, son of the late Charlie Matt and Vinnie Mathis Secrest. He was a truck driver for Hennis Freight Lines and later retired as a truck driver from Petroleum Transport. He was retired part owner of Surry Well Drilling and was a member of Midway Baptist Church. Surviving is his wife, Ethel Meadows Secrest of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Iva and Floyd Thompson of Carlisle, Pa.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Barbara W. Secrest of Mount Airy and Hugh and Faye G. Secrest of Dobson; seven grandchildren and spouses, Ricky Secrest of Mount Airy, Vicki and Larry Dowell of Mount Airy, Shannon and Michael Tolbert of Mount Airy, Sherri and Brandon Spurlin of Mount Airy, Marty and Lynn Secrest of Dobson, Phillip Thompson of Carlisle, Pa., and Brandon Thompson of Fort Myer, Va.; eight great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Thelma Kay of Mooresville, Evelene and Miller Hudson of Rural Hall and Carrine and Everett Dixon of King; a brother and sister-in-law, Harless and Margaret Secrest of King; a special niece and husband, Patti and Steve White of Tobaccoville; a special nephew and wife, Eugene and Wilma Secrest of Randleman; and several other nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Secrest was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Brenda Secrest, and five sisters, Sarah Lovill, Hattie Lovill, Lendy Anderson, Bernice Secrest and Gladys Secrest. The funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Junior Easter, Rev. Larry Phillips and Rev. Harold Parker with burial in Midway Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service.

Mr. Elbert J. Short, 54, of 4266 Indiana Ave. (Hines Family Care) passed away Jan. 29, 2000, at Baptist Hospital. He will be funeralized on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Beasley's Chapel. The quiet hour will be at 1:30 p.m. at the chapel prior to the service . Burial will be immediately following the service at Evergreen Cemetery. GREENSBORO -- Mr. Franklin ''Buddy'' Slayton Sr., 59, of 2503 McKnight Mill Rd. died on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at his residence. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Saint's Delight Primitive Baptist Church in Kernersville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Slayton was the son of the late W.L. and Myrtle Slayton. He was also predeceased by one brother, Billy Slayton, and sisters, Frances Perdue and Marie Cassell. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Mary H. Slayton of the home; sons, Franklin ''Buddy'' Slayton Jr. and wife, Darlene of McLeansville, William L. Slayton of the home and Alan Dean Slayton and wife, Carol of Bealeton, Va.; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Wilkerson and husband, Brian, of McLeansville; a five grandchildren. WESTFIELD -- Mrs. Lela Adams Smith, 83, of 3424 Hwy. 66 North, Westfield, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Smith was born June 22, 1916, in Stokes County to John Thomas and Mary Collins Adams. She was a homemaker, a farmer and a member of the Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Arthur D. Smith of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, David Thomas Smith and wife, Angela, of Lawsonville; one grandson, Doug T. Smith and wife, Emily, of Winston-Salem; one great-grandson, Justin Thomas Smith; one sister, Rena Wright of Westfield; three half-sisters, Louis Ward of Walnut Cove, Betty Alley and Barbara Jean Manring, both of Danbury; and two half-brothers, Gaylon Adams of Westfield an Roy Adams of King. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Cox; three half-sisters, Marie Joyce, Hessie Mae Southern and Erselle McHone and two brothers, Troy Adams and James Pee Wee Adams. Mrs. Virginia Harper Tesh, 81, of Chadbourne Dr., Winston-Salem died at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home late Saturday night, Jan. 29, 2000, after an extended illness. She was born July 1, 1918, in Clemmons to Andrew Blaine Harper ''Dock'' and Mary Elizabeth Harper. Mrs. Tesh graduated from Lewisville High School and attended Draughon Business College. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in 1979 after many years of dedicated service. Mrs. Tesh was a charter member of South Fork Church of Christ and South Stokes Church of Christ. She also was a very devoted Sunday School Teacher at South Fork and South Stokes. She last attended church at Warners Chapel Church of Christ in Clemmons as long as her health permitted. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Chapel in Clemmons by C.W. Bradley of Memphis, Tenn., the former charter minister at South Fork Church of Christ. Entombment will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory mausoleum in Clemmons. Mrs. Tesh was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Ralph Tesh, in 1993; a sister, Grace H. Grose; and two brothers, Paul W. Harper and John B. Harper. Surviving is a son, Robert ''Bob'' Tesh and wife, Manchel, of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Carolyn T. Rajacich and husband, Joseph, of Clemmons; grandchildren, Steve Tesh of Winston-Salem, Sancy T. Stewart and husband, Chris, of Lewisville, Rodney Tesh and wife, Kathryn, of Hickory, Alex Rajacich and wife, Alison, of Santa Fe, N.M., and Andrew B. Rajacich of Wilmington; one great-grandson, Brady Tesh of Hickory; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Brewer of Clemmons and Mrs. Helen Isaacs of Winston-Salem; and two brothers, L. Marion Harper (Mary) of Clemmons and A.B. Harper (Margaret) of Lewisville. Several nieces and nephews as well as a special grandniece, Laurel McKinnon, and a grandnephew, Drew McKinnon, also survive. TURNER
Mr. Sam Whitfield Turner, 82, of 2800 Robinhood Road passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Turner was born in Littleton, a son of Samuel Whitfield and Mollie Johnston Turner. He graduated from Kuling American School in China. After two years at Wake Forest College, he transferred to and graduated from N.C. State College in 1940 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Mr. Turner worked with the federal Resettlement Administration. He was the first engineer to work on the project that became Fort Stewart, G a. Later he worked as a civil-service engineer at the Fort Monmouth Signal Laboratory in New Jersey. During World War II, Mr. Turner served as an ordnance officer in the Navy. After the war, he returned to Winston-Salem and, with help from his father-in-law Reuben Wall, founded Wall-Turner Co. to sell heating systems. Soon after 1957, Mr. Turner founded Air Conditioning Supply Co. in Myrtle Beach, S.C., which later became ACS Mechanic al Contractors. Mr. Turner was a member of First Baptist Church, taught in the intermediate department, served as a deacon and was chairman of the house and grounds committee. He was a member of Kiwanis Club of Winston-Salem and served on the alumni board of directors of N.C. State University. In addition, he served on the N.C. State Board of Refrigeration Contractors under governors Scott, Holshauser and Hunt. His favorite pastimes included quoting poetry and playing tennis. He described the ''good times'' as time spent with his family on their boat around Sandy Island, S.C. Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Johnston Turner. Surviving are his wife, Theresa Wall Turner; a daughter, Theresa Star Turner; three sons, Sam Whitfield Turner III (Anne) of Hendersonville, Jonathan Reuben Wall Turner (Beverly) of Winston-Salem and Christopher Thomas Turner (Pink) of Winston-Salem; one brother, Thomas Miles Turner (June) of Sarasota, Fla.; six grandchildren, H. Scott Turner, Anita T. Suttles, Jonathan D. Turner, M. Clay Turner, Elizabeth (Libby) Turner and Ann Sheppard Turner; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Whitney Suttles. The family wishes to thank First Baptist Church and Hospice for their wonderful love and care during his long illness. A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 2 , at 11 a.m. by Dr. David Hughes and Rev. Henry Stokes at First Baptist Church, West Fifth Street. MADISON -- Faye Maryless Webster, 96, of 401 Ped Rd., Madison, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of Eden United Methodist Church where she was a former church pianist, Sunday school teacher and member of the Administrative Board. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pleasant Richard and Maryless Simpson Webster; sister, Maude Webster, Octola Saccoman and Elinor Busick; and brothers, Paul, James and John Webster. Surviving are two nieces and two nephews, Paul R. Webster and wife, Anne, of Winston-Salem, Richard Soccoman and wife, Lynn, of Irvine, Calif., Joeanne and Grady Shelton of Madison and Ann Slattery and husband, Robert, of Ramsey, N.J.
