Mr. John Gilbert Beck, 75, of Winston-Salem, died Thursday, September 30, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Beck was born December 24, 1923 in Asheboro, N.C. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and graduated from the Institute of Polygraph. Mr. Beck was a Polygraph Examiner and was a charter member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Betty Davis Beck of the home; two daughters, Johnnie (Harry) Leake of Rural Hall and Johanna (Roger) Sizemore of Yadkinville; a step-daughter, Sharon Carter and husband, Daryl of Winston-Salem; four step-sons, Steven (Cindy) Spear, Randall Spear, Bruce (Tammie) Spear, and Brian (Kristy) Spear all of Winston-Salem; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Byron Beck of Charleston, S.C.; a sister, Geraldine Polke of High Point; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek by Rev. Charles Martin. Entombment will follow in the Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday, October 1, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek. BETHEA
KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Florence Evon Crews Rothrock Bethea, age 59, of Kernersville died Friday, October 1, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. Evon was born in Forsyth Co. a daughter of the late James Clarence and Argie Osborne Crews and was a charter member of the Freedom Wesleyan Church where she served on the Board of Stewards at the church, a Sunday School Teacher, was a special singer and was a retiree of the Sara Lee Stock Co. with 29 years service. Surviving are her husband, Charles Bethea; a daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Mark Lorenz of Kernersville; two sons and daughters in law, Clarence and Lorraine Rothrock of Greensboro, Joe and Cynthia Rothrock of High Point; four brothers, Ronald Crews of King, Herman Crews and James Crews both of Salisbury, Kenneth Crews of Escondido, Calif.; three grandchildren, Grayson Crews Lorenz, Heather McAlister and Jennifer Kearns. Funeral service will be conducted Sunday 2:00 p.m. at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel in Kernersville by Rev. H.A. Lewis with burial to follow in the Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. BLAKE
Mrs. Edith Newsom Blake, 77, of 231 Shady Lane, Winston-Salem died Friday, October 1, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born September 2, 1922 in Forsyth County to Othor Paul and Maude Sowers Blake. Mrs. Blake was a member of New Eden Moravian Church and was retired from Western Electric. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Norris Blake and her brother, Maxwell E. Newsom. Survivors include one niece, Lenora Newsome McLamb of Winston-Salem; two great nieces, Jan Johnson of Lexington and Julie Beauchamp and husband, Kevin of Winston-Salem; one great nephew, Jon McLamb of Orlando, Florida; one great great niece, Jennifer Nicole Johnson of Lexington; and one sister-in-law, Louise J. Newsome of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens by Rev. Hal Cole and Rev. Jimmie L. Newsom. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel, Winston-Salem. Thomas Gales Bowen, Sr., went home to be with the Lord on September 18, 1999. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 3, 1999 at Olivet Moravian Church officiated by Chaplain Randy Hillman.

ADVANCE -- Mrs. Joan Diane Hammond, 56, of Advance, Possum Thicket, passed away Wednesday, September 29. She was born 4 October, 1942 in Long Island, N.Y. to the late Gerry and William Hopley. She was an employee of U.S. Airways TLC reservation center. Surviving are her loving husband, Mike Hammond, of the home, two daughters; Lisa Seeger and husband Robert, of Columbia, S.C., Kristen Thomas and husband Les of Miami, Fla.; one son, Eric Artom of Denver, Colo.; two grandchildren, Bianca Seeger and Sweet Pea; one brother, Larry Hopley and wife Elaine of Lewisville; one seester, Dale Roediger of Winston-Salem; five nieces, Morgan Hopley, Chrystal Pegram and husband David, Heidi Riddle and husband Nathan and their daughters Peyton and Parker, Starr Roediger, Trish Whelan and husband Nick; one nephew, Matthew Beckham; two brother-in-laws, Vic Hammond and wife Linda of Winston-Salem, Bill Trow and wife Mary of St. Paul, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Pat White and husband Wes of Radford, Va.; and very special friends, Rick Holder, Kathy Ferguson, and Judy Roffo. Joan will be lovingly missed by those that knew her. The love and caring she shared was something special and gladly given. MADISON -- Mrs. Margaret Collins Hawkins, 71, of 7329 Hwy 65, Belews Creek, died Thursday, September 30, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 3, 1999, at Delta United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Hawkins was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, was a homemaker, and was of the Presbyterian faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnson David Hawkins. Survivors include her son, Roger D. Hawkins of Belews Creek; her daughters, Leilani H. Jarrell of Burlington, and Barbara H. Wagoner of Charlotte; five grandchildren, and one great grandchild. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday, October 2, 1999, at Coloinal Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
HIRE
Mrs. Grace Alice Tesh Hire, 94, of Winston-Salem, died at Forsyth Medical Center on September 30, 1999. Mrs. Hire was born in Forsyth County to Emma Kiger and Edward Bloom Tesh on March 18, 1905. She spent her entire life in Forsyth County with the exception of two years spent in Columbia, S.C., in the twenties. She grew up in the Marvin United Methodist Church community and joined that church in her girlhood. She was an active member until she joined the Moravian Church in later years. She had been an active member of Christ Moravian Church, the Women's Fellowship, the Schwalbe Bible Class and the Senior Friends since 1955. She was the widow of Mr. David Nathaniel Hire. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Leon Daniels, Sr.; a grandson and his wife, Leon and Donna Daniels; two great grandchildren, Shannon D. McDonald of San Diego, C.A. and Brent Daniels of Winston-Salem; a step daughter, Mrs. Wiley (June) Stanford; three step grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Hazel F. Tesh. Mrs. Hire was the last survivor of the six children of Emma Kiger and Edward Bloom Tesh,her parents; one sister, Maude T. Crews; and four brothers, Ellis, Thomas, Walter, and Edward preceded her in death. Mrs. Hire was retired from the Hanes Corporation Knitwear Division after 40 years of service. Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 3, 1999 at 3:30 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Her Pastor, Rev. Wallace Elliott, and Dr. Sam Marx will conduct the service with burial to follow in the Moravian Graveyard. The family will be at the funeral home Saturday, October 2, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Schwalbe Bible Class, Christ Moravian Church, 919 W. Academy Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101-5103. Since May 1999, Mrs. Hire had been a resident at the Homestead Hills Facility. Mr. Robert Coyte Kinder, Jr., age 81, of 895 Troy Mill Rd., Hamptonville, N.C. died Thursday, September 30, 1999 at Iredell Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Kinder was born November 15, 1917. Surviving are his wife, Mina Hepler Kinder; two daughters, Katie K. Barker of Statesville and Roberta Sue K. Gobble of Mocksville; one brother, Ernest Kinder of Mt. Airy; 6 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 3, 1999 at Harmony United Methodist Church with Interment following in the Harmony Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday, at Harmony Methodist Church.
MILLER
Mrs. Veola Smith Miller, 86, of Mocksville, N.C. died Thursday, September 30, 1999 at her residence after a brief illness. She was born December 1, 1912 in Davie Co., N.C. to the late Rose Roberson Smith and the late Joseph L. Smith, Sr. She was educated in the Davie County Schools. She was a homemaker and a member of Franklin Baptist Church, and the Ladies Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Boone Miller, Sr. on January 8, 1977. Survivors include two sons, Daniel Boone Miller, Jr. of Salisbury, N.C., and Mathias S. Miller of Gainesville Ga.; one daughter, Gloria R. Miller of Mocksville, N.C.; two brothers, Sid Smith of Mocksville, N.C. and J.L. Smith, Jr. of Mocksville, N.C.; one sister, Beatrice S. Shaver of Salisbury, N.C.; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one step-grandchild, one step-great grandchild. Services will be on Saturday, October 2, 1999 at 4:00 p.m. at Summersett Memorial Chapel officiated by Rev. Gary Hoffman, First Baptist Church of Norwood, and Rev. Darrell Cox, Trinity Baptist Church, Mocksville, N.C. Interment will be at Rowan Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Davie County Library, 371 N. Main St., Mocksville, N.C. 27028.
MORRIS
Mr. H. Lester Morris, Sr. of 70 Park Blvd., Winston-Salem, died Thursday, September 30, 1999. He was born August 23, 1913 in Winston-Salem, N.C. to Francis William and Emma Shore Morris. Mr. Morris graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School, Class of 1931 and began his career at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in August, 1931, which lasted until his retirement 47 years later in December, 1978. He joined Home Moravian Church in 1934 where he served on the Board of Elders, Music Committee, and Church Choir. Mr. Morris was the Director of Home Moravian Church Band and was recognized in 1997 for 75 consecutive years of playing the Moravian Easter Band. He played in the Moravian Band for 77 years. He also played in the N.C. 26th Regimental Band and played for many years in the Salem Band. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Clara Byerly Click Morris of the home; a daughter, Ann Morris Moore and husband, Ben of Mission Viejo, Calif.; a son, H. Lester Morris, Jr. and wife, Gail of Clemmons, N.C.; Four grandchildren, H. Lester Morris, III of Charlotte, N.C., John E. Morris of Winston-Salem, N.C., Ben Moore IV of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Susan Moore Nelson and husband, Chad of San Clemente, Calif. Also surviving are two brothers, Charles Morris and wife, Bernice of Winston-Salem, and Paul Morris of The Blumenthal Home in Clemmons; and two nephews. His brother Rev. Dr. F. Hubert Morris preceded him in death. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 3, 1999 at Home Moravian Church by Rev. C. Scott Venable, III and Dr. D. Wayne Burkette. Burial will follow in God's Acre. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Vogler and sons Main Street Chapel is serving the Morris family.
