McCRAY
Mrs. Mary A. Battle McCray, 70, of 319 E. 27th St. was a native and lifelong resident of Winston-Salem. She was born Dec. 25, 1929, to Judd and Beatrice Mitchell in Mount Airy. She was a faithful member of Mount Able Pentcostal Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Helen Marie Dodd. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband, William McCray; three daughters, Patricia Dodd, Savannah (Logan) Cofield and Elizabeth (Curtis) Tripp; two sons, George Dodd and Lloyd Dodd, all of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, John and Bill Mitchell; a sister, Elizabeth Martin; two sisters-in-law, Mammie Mitchell and Mary Mitchell, all of Siloam; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, from the Frances S. & Jerry C. Gilmore Memorial Chapel, where Bishop Burgess will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the chapel. The funeral cortege wil assemble and leave froem 4515 Baux Mountain Road. MOTSINGER
Mrs. Bessie Faye Hedgecock Motsinger, 85, of Motsinger Drive died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 8, 1915, in Davidson County, a daughter of of Arthur and Phoebe Weavil Hedgecock. Mrs. Motsinger grew up in the Abbotts Creek community, was a member of Abbotts Creek Baptist Church and graduated from Wallburg High School. She married Jonah Ray Motsinger in 1936 and moved to the Sedge Garden community. She became a member of Saint Delight Primitive Baptist Church. She retired from the Forsyth County school system after 20 years of service. Mrs. Motsinger was preceded in death by her husband in 1962, her parents, a sister, Mary Hedgecock, and a son-in-law, Charles Talley. She is survived by a daughter, Shelba Talley of Kernersville; two sons and daughters-in-law, J.R. and Kathy Motsinger and Terry and Ellen Motsinger of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Emma Lee Parnell, Blanche Sechrist (George) and Mildred Craven (Clay); three grandchildren, Amanda Motsinger, Sandra Weavil (Randy) and LuAnn Baker (Wesley); four great-grandchildren, Miranda Weavil, Jordan, and Jonathan and Jason Baker; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at Saint Delight Primitive Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Cain Funeral Home, Kernersville, and at other times at 270 Motsinger Drive. MYERS
Mr. Lester Myers Sr., 80, of 1080 Shalimar Drive passed away Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at the Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 26, 1920, in Pageland, S.C., to the late Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Myers and moved to Winston-Salem at an early age. He was a faithful member of the Antioch Baptist Church, serving on the deacon board, Sunday school and the Senior Choir. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 220, the Happy Hill Senior Citizens Club, the D. Everette Bible study class of Emmanuel Baptist Church and was a retired employee of AT&T. He leaves to cherish his wonderful memories a loving and devoted wife of 30 years, Mrs. Cassie Myers of the home; a loving son, Lester Myers Jr. of Winston-Salem; a devoted daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and James Mitchell Sr.; six loving grandchildren, Joseph (Bertha) Mitchell, Monticello Mitchell, LaCheryl Mitchell, LaRita (Rupert) Bell, Denita Mitchell and Catanza Mitchell; seven great-grandchildren; a goddaughter, Arneise Robinson; a devoted brother, Houston (Louise) Myers of Detroit, Mich.; two loving sisters, Mrs. Hattie Austin of New York and Mrs. Emelia Nivens of Charlotte; devoted friends, Charles and Tressie Springs, the Rev. and Mrs. Melvin Nellums, Mr. Willie Mouzon, Clifton and Dollie Hines, Frank Thomas, George Baldwin, the Antioch Baptist Church family; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, from the Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. J.L. Montgomery officiating. Interment will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. ROBERTSON
Mrs. Kathynel Blair Robertson, 57, of 635 W. 13th St. passed away Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was a native of Winston-Salem, born Oct. 29, 1943, the daughter of the late Moses and Velma Jones Blair, and spent many years in Gastonia. She was a member of the First Baptist Church (East Winston), where she played for the children and choral club choirs. She was a member of the Addie C. Morris Club and served with other organizations. She was employed with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools as a substitute teacher until her health began to decline. She is survived by her husband, William Robertson of Washington, D.C.; two children, Kimberly Robertson (Eugene Littlejohn) and Anthony Robertson, both of Winston-Salem; a sister, Miriam Booker (LaVaughn) of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Demetrius, Ciara and Brittany, all of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Vera Copeland of Washington, D.C.; a niece, OanJelete Booker and a nephew, Vaughn Booker, both of Charlotte and a host of other relatives and friends. Homegoing services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Wendell A. Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. SMITHERMAN
BANNER ELK -- Mr. Peter Franklin Smitherman, 67, of South Slope Circle died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at his residence. He was born Sept. 8, 1933, in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, to the late John and Mary Olive Smitherman. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served in the U.S. Navy. He was instrumental in preventing the Ninth Street connector from destroying Hanes Park and adjacent neighborhoods. As a founder of the West End Association, he reversed the decay of what is now a historic district. He continued to improve the West End by moving the Zevely house to its present location and by opening it as a restaurant in which he was owner and operator for a number of years. He was also responsible for converting a derelict gas station into a popular downtown meeting place called Johanna Shobers. He left a lasting impression as both businesses still thrive today. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed. At Pete's request, his ashes will be ''disposed of economically'' at his nemesis, the 14th fairway at Sugar Mountain Golf Club, Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at 3 p.m., one hour prior to ''cocktail hour. '' ''Take five, smoke 'em if you got 'em.'' Pete is survived by his son, Kirk Smitherman and wife Joanna, and their children, Maggie and Jeffrey of Zebulon; his stepson, Peter Dalton Fox and his son, Walter Dalton Fox of Winston-Salem; and his brothers, John Smitherman of Gainesville, Fla., and James Smitherman of Houston, Texas. THOMAS
Mr. Paul Allen Thomas, 50, of Greene Cross Court died Nov. 1, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County on April 4, 1950, to Paul Robert and Frances Roberta Maxey Thomas. Mr. Thomas was of the Baptist faith and a self-employed paint contractor. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict, and he received the silver star. Mr. Thomas is survived by his father, Paul R. Thomas of Winston-Salem; his fiancee , Judi Greene of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Shirley Wood and husband, Danny, of Kernersville; Becky Slate of Winston-Salem; and Nancy Byerly and husband, Dolan, of Winston-Salem; a brother, Charlie (Buster) Thomas and wife, Cindy, of Alabama; four nephews and two nieces. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Danny Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family would like for love offerings to be made to the family during their time of need.
TURNER
Mrs. Elizabeth Hine Turner, 85, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at Silas Creek Manor She was born Dec. 27, 1914, in Forsyth County to Eugene Hine Sr. and Gertrude Willard Hine. Mrs. Turner was a lifelong resident of the Friedland community and was a member and supporter of the local Salvation Army. Survivors include a daughter, Joanna Turner of Folly Beach, S.C.; a sister, Sallie Hine Watkins of Covington, Ga.; three nephews, B.H. Hine of Denver, Colo., Louis Hine of Dallas, Texas, and Wesley Hine of Memphis, Tenn.; four nieces, Rebecca H. Weavil, Charlotte H. Renigar, and Betsy H. Davis of Winston-Salem and Hilda H. Patterson of Raleigh; and many great nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. BASS
LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. -- Rev. Billy Edward Bass, Sr, 67, of Lake Junaluska, N.C., passed away October 31, 1999 at Davis Medical Center, Statesville. He was born to the late Rev. and Mrs. R.L. Bass on May 26, 1932 in Elmwood, N.C. He is a graduate of Shelby High School in 1950. He attended Brevard College where he played football in the last year it was a sport there. He then went to Wofford College where he received his B.A. degree. He received his Master of Divinity from Duke University. He was a much beloved minister in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, serving 42 years in active ministry. His pastorates included: Shelby, Oxford, Asheboro, Charlotte, Statesville, Wadesboro, Winston-Salem, and Salisbury. His last appointment before retirement was District Superintendent of the Albemarle District. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Marjorie Ann Singleton Bass of the home; his son and daughter-in-law, Billy Edward and Krista Bass, Jr. of Statesville; two daughters, Patricia Kay Bass of Charlotte and Katherine Leigh Bass Carr of Statesville; grandsons, Derek Thomas Bass, Kyle Edward Bass, and Zackary Simpson Carr; two sisters, Mary Lou Bigler of Seattle, Wash. and Sara Tolbert of Greensboro, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin Denise Bass. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, November 3, 1999 at his home church, Lafayette Street United Methodist Church in Shelby, N.C. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby. ANGIER -- Zela Mangum Blalock, 95, of Brookfield Retirement Center of Lillington, died Saturday, October 30, 1999. She was a member of the Angier Memorial United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Pierce Blalock and her son, Milton Cheek Blalock. She is survived by her daughters, Sylvia B. Elliott of Summerfield and Evelyn B. Walters and husband, Marvin L. Walters of Raleigh; son, Donald R. Blalock and wife, Ann P. Blalock of Colfax; a daughter-in-law, Ramona M. Blalock; seven grandchildren, Andy E. Blalock, George Elliott, Johnna Ruth Elliott, D. Flay Blalock, Doyle F. Blalock, Tanya W. Williams, and Teresa W. Adams; and six great-grandchildren, Andrea Blalock, Jennie Elliott, Alex Williams, Jeremy Williams, Colton Williams, and Jacquelyn Mann. Mr. Joseph Ross Bovender, Sr., 82, of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, October 31, 1999 at his home. He was born December 13, 1916 in Yadkin County to William R. and Percy Poindexter Bovender. Mr. Bovender was a member of Crestwood Baptist Church and retired from Smith Transfer Company January 1, 1977. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Iola Smith Bovender in 1957. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Barrett Bovender of the home; one son, Joseph Ross ''Buddy'' Bovender, Jr. and wife, Angela of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Joan Vreeland and husband, Dr. Walling D. Vreeland, Jr. of Mocksville and Kathie Sebastian and husband, David Sebastion of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Joseph R. ''Jody'' Bovender III, Christie Martin, Chad Sebastian, and Douglas Vreeland; five great-grandchildren; and a special friend and caregiver, Ramona Williams of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Parklawn Memorial Gardens by Rev. J. Marion Rector.
