FLEMING
Evangelist Maggie Theo Gillespie Fleming, 93, of 721 Hanes Avenue, passed away Friday, September 17, 1999 at Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home following a period of illness. She was a native of Woodleaf, N.C., born January 17, 1906 to the late Garfield and Charlotte Gillespie. She attended Rowan County schools, and was a retired employee of the Rowan County School System. She was a member of Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church in Woodleaf, N.C., and was the wife of the late Rev. Redmond Fleming. She leaves to mourn, one son, Hubert Fleming of Charlotte; one sister, Mrs. Ethel G. Martin; and one brother, James E. Gillespie, both of Winston-Salem; two nieces; five nephews; three great nieces; and three great nephews, all of Winston-Salem; and other relatives; and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, September 21, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church in Woodleaf, N.C., with interment in the church cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1:30-2:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the church. (RUSSELL)
HOLLER
Mrs. Helen Messer Holler, 94, of 1104 Newport St., died Sunday, September 19, 1999. She was born in Buncombe County on August 22, 1905 to William and Sophronia Elizabeth Gillespie Messer. She was of the Baptist faith and attended Woodland Baptist Church. Mrs. Holler was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Staley Holler, Sr.; two daughters, Wilda Mae Hobson and Margaret Smith; and three sons, Raymond Staley Holler, Jr., Billy Eugene Holler, and Barry Gilbert Holler. Surviving are five daughters, Patricia Cooke and Nancy Cooper, both of Winston-Salem, Carol Lewis of Davie, Fla., Linda Davis of Walkertown, and Judy Spencer of Lexington; one son, Randall Holler of Pfafftown; two beloved nieces, Billie Mae Varner of Wichita Falls, Kan. and Beulah Carson of Barnardsville, N.C.; 25 grandchildren; and 37 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, September 21, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by Rev. Zeno Groce. Burial will follow in Forbush Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 Monday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend.
JARVIS
Thomas R. Jarvis, Jr., M.D. died Saturday evening, September 18, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following several months of declining health. He was born in Elizabeth City, N.C. on October 28, 1920 to Thomas R. Jarvis, Sr. and Harriet Louise Ward Jarvis. Dr. Jarvis was a graduate of Wake Forest College and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. For 19 years, Dr. Jarvis practiced medicine in Galax, Va. He retired from the Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic in Winston-Salem as Chief of Staff in 1989, following 20 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Lelia Gray (Gay) Creech Jarvis, of the home; four sons, Thomas R. Jarvis, III and wife, Betty, of Vinton, Va., J. Wilson Jarvis and wife, Teresa, of Houston, Texas, David W. Jarvis and wife, Anne, of Hillsborough, and Randall G. Jarvis and wife, Cheryl, of Hillsborough; three grandchildren, Christopher Jarvis, Matthew Jarvis, and Sarah Jarvis; one great grandson, Jacob Davis; one brother, Hallet W. Jarvis and wife, Marie, of Durham. The memorial service will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103. McMILLIAN
MOORESVILLE -- Mrs. Gertrude Ebert ''Trudy'' McMillian, 79, formerly of 2711 Huntington Ct., died Friday, September 17, 1999 at the Brian Center in Mooresville. Mrs. McMillian was born April 29, 1920 in Ducktown, Tenn. to Zeb Vance and Georgia McCall Rykard. She was a retired employee of Davis Department Store, a member of Christ Moravian Church, and a member of Pinebrook Country Club. Mrs. McMillian was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Franklin ''Hump'' Ebert, in March, 1971; and her second husband, Tom McMillian, in October, 1990. Surviving are a sister, Myrtle Curry Wessman of Carolina Beach; two sons, David Ebert of Easley S.C. and Steve Ebert of Mooresville; a stepdaughter, Tamara Cooper of Winston-Salem; a stepson, Craig McMillian of Colorado; and nine grandchildren. The funeral will be held Wednesday, September 22 at 11:00 a.m. in Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Rev. Wallace Elliott and Rev. Judith Justice will officiate. Interment will follow in God's Acre. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. SHELTON
MARIETTA, Ga. -- Mr. Forrest Shelton, Jr., 79, of Marietta, Ga., formerly of Winston-Salem, died Saturday evening, September 18, 1999. Born May 13, 1920 in Tuskegee, Ala., Mr. Shelton attended Georgia Military Academy and Auburn University. During World War II, he was an instructor for the Tuskegee Airmen at Moton Field in Alabama and ''flew the hump'' in the China-Burma-India Theatre. A major in the Air Force Reserve, he was recalled to the service for two years during the Korean War. Mr. Shelton was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with two gold, oak leaf clusters, The Presidential Citation, and the Air Force Reserve Medal. He joined Piedmont Airlines in 1948 as one of the original pilots hired by Tom Davis. During his career, he flew many distinguished people, including Senator John F. Kennedy, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the Dahli Lama. He retired in 1980. Mr. Shelton was an avid fisherman and a member of the Quiet Birdmen Association. He operated ham radio station, W4EJF, for over 40 years. Mr. Shelton was married to Alyne Howard for 58 years. He is survived by his wife; two children, Forrest M. Shelton, III and Judy S. Foster; and two granddaughters, Kascy A. Foster and Kate A. Foster. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, September 21 at 2:00 p.m. in Tuskegee Cemetery. Visitation will also be Tuesday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at Corbitt's Funeral Home in Tuskegee. SHEPHERD
GREENSBORO -- Mr. Robert Harold (Slick) Shepherd, 95, of Greensboro, died Saturday, September 18, 1999 at Moses Cone Hospital. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 21, 1999 at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. A native of Winston-Salem, Mr. Shepherd was a member of St. Paul Presbyterian Church. Employed with the Greensboro News and Record for 34 years, he held several positions, including City Editor, for 12 years. He was one of the three founders of Fellowship Hall in Greensboro, and was first secretary and treasurer. In 1935, he covered the Session of Congress in Washington, D.C. as a newspaperman. He collaborated on the book, Dreams That Money Can Buy, covering the Reynolds case in Winston-Salem (Smith Reynolds, Libby Holman death). Mr. Shepherd won Senior Citizen of the Month for September, 1987. A graduate of Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, he had attended Webb College in Bell Buckle, Tenn. Mr. Shepherd was preceded in death by his wife, Olive Newel Shepherd. He is survived by his son, Robert Allen (Bobby) Shepherd, of the home. Mrs. LaDonna McGuire Taylor, 51, of 4675 Joe Shawn Road, Winston-Salem, formerly of Pocahontas, Va., died Saturday, September 18, 1999 at her home. She was born in Mercer County W. Va. on March 16, 1948 to the late Denny and Pauline Tucker McGuire. She was a member of Berean Baptist Church. Mrs. Taylor is survived by her husband, Roy Taylor, of the home; a son, Butch Taylor and wife, Christina; a daughter, Tammy Ballard and husband, Ronnie; and four grandchildren, Beth and Kayla Taylor and Taylor and Christopher Ballard, all of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are an uncle, Bobby McGuire of Squire, W. Va.; and a very special aunt, Goldie Siverson, of Tazewell, Va. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 21 at 2:00 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Chapel by Dr. Ron Baity. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. DANBURY -- The Lord called to rest, our beloved brother. Terry Davis Young, age 66, passed away early Sunday morning, September 19, 1999 at Patrick Community General Hospital in Stuart, Va. He was born April 24, 1933, son of the late, James Branscome Young, Sr. and Nancy Gilbert Young. Mr. Young was of Danbury, and had been a resident of Blue Ridge Nursing Center for six years. He joined Pleasant View Primitive Baptist Church in August of 1977, and was a faithful member as long as his health permitted. He had been cripple all of his life, in body, but the Lord blessed him with a wonderful mind and memory. He was loved by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, David Ithel Young ( September 23, 1924) and Robert Lloyd Young ( December 7, 1993) ; a niece, Diane Young Gilley ( January 25, 1994); and a brother-in-law, Dell M. Shelton ( October 24, 1982) . Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Isabell) Dodson and Mrs. Adelene Y. Shelton, both of Danbury; five brothers, J.B. (Lucille) Young, Jr. and Ray (Joyce) Young, both of Danbury, Curtis (Lena) Young of Stuart, Va., Winfred (Louise) Young of Lawsonville, and Clyde (Jo) Young of Trinity; one sister-in-law, Minnie R. Young of Walnut Cove; 16 nieces and nephews; 23 great nieces and nephews; and one great, great niece. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 21, 2:00 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel by Elder John Calhoun, Elder Walter Hodge, Elder Ked Stacy, and Elder Danny Smith. AYCOCK
WAKE FOREST -- Leila Holding Aycock of Wake Forest died at her home Saturday, September 18, 1999 after a period of declining health. A native of Wake Forest, Mrs. Aycock was the daughter of the late Thomas Elford and Minta Royall Holding, and was the youngest of their seven children. She was the wife of the late Benjamin Thompson Aycock, a merchant, postmaster, and former mayor of Wake Forest. Mrs. Aycock was a graduate of Meredith College and was active in many civic and comunity activities. She was a member of Wake Forest Baptist Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by her two children, Benjamin T. Aycock, Jr. and wife, Susan, of Wake Forest and Minta Aycock McNally and husband, Frank, of Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren, Frank H. McNally, Jr., Robert Holding Aycock, and Minta Catherine Holding McNally. Also surviving are a number of devoted nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 Sunday afternoon, September 19 at Wake Forest Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 122 East South Avenue. BAILEY
Mrs. Kate Conrad Bailey, 88, widow of Taft J. Bailey, died Friday morning, September 17, 1999 after a period of declining health. Mrs. Bailey was born in Winston-Salem on July 4, 1911 to the late Amos Oscoe Conrad and Minnie Brown Conrad. She was a longtime member of Olivet Moravian Church. Mrs. Bailey and her husband operated Bailey's Food Store and Kate's Kitchen Bakery in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Bailey also cared for children in her home. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989. Surviving are her daughters, Patsy Bailey Jent Calhoun and her husband, Ralph, of Winston-Salem and Katherine Bailey Loafman and her husband, Jerry, of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Lee Anne Jent Sykes and husband, Artie, of Winston-Salem, Ellen Jent Carter and husband, Nick, of Baltimore, Md., and Robert Taft Loafman and wife, Jamie, of Lewisville; and two great grandsons, Clay and Ben Sykes of Winston-Salem. The funeral will be conducted by Rev. Doug Rights at Olivet Moravian Church, Sunday, September 19 at 4:00 p.m. Mrs. Bailey will lie in state from 3:30 p.m. until service time.
