ENNICE -- Chester W. Maines, 74, passed away Sunday at his residence. He was born April 9, 1926, in the Vox community, Sparta , to James Arthur and Flora Patton Maines. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served in World War II and the Korean campaign. He was a medical administrative assistant in several veterans administration offices with 27 years of service including his military service. He was an avid gardener and farmer and mostly enjoyed his woodworking hobby. He was a member of Sparta Masonic Lodge 423, A.F.& A.M. Sparta. Surviving are his wife, Mary Mincey Maines of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Dewey Hoppers of Whitehead; a brother and sister-in-law, Silver E. and Mary Bryant Maines of Summerfield; a niece, Cheryl M. Hylton of Greensboro; and two nephews, David J. Maines of Greensboro and Steven Hoppers of Whitehead. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence, Va. , with the Rev. Fred E. Jennings officiating. Interment will be in Edwards-Maines Cemetery, Sparta. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service. Masonic rites will be conducted at the graveside by Sparta Masonic Lodge 423 A.F.& A.M. MELTON
HAYS -- Mr. R.L. Melton, 69, of Rock Creek Road died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at his home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christian Home Baptist Church , with the Rev. Ivan Dameron, the Rev. Larry Adams and the Rev. George Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Melton was born in Caldwell County March 3, 1931, to Boyden Clark and Lois Edna Walker Melton. He was a member of Christian Home Baptist Church and a deacon for 30 years. Mr. Melton served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict abroad the destroyer, USS Black. He went to work for Lowe's in November 1954 and subsequently retired in December 1985 after more than 30 years of service. He was very active in the Gideon International, Wilkes North Camp. Mr. Melton is survived by his wife of 47 years, Doris Wiles Melton of the home; two sons, Randy Lee Melton of Hays and Steven Eric Melton of Wilkesboro; a sister, Pauline Mendenhall of Walnut Cove; a brother, Ed Melton of Millers Creek; and five grandchildren, April Melton, Candice Melton and Amber Marsh all of Hays and Caroline Melton and Eric Melton both of Wilkesboro. KERNERSVILLE Mrs. Fannie Winters Osborne, 91, widow of Lee Osborne and a resident of Britthaven of Kernersville died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000. She was born on Nov. 22, 1909, in Forsyth County , a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Thomas Winters. Surviving are three daughters, Faye and husband Roy Manuel of Kernersville, Nancy and husband Carl Purvis and Betty Barrow of Oak Island; a son, Danny Osborne of Kernersville; two sisters, Amanda Mabe of Summerfield and Audrey Talley of Grafton, Va.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, Faye.

WALNUT COVE -- Mr. Carl Vance Perdue, 82, died Sunday at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born June 5, 1918, in Forsyth County to the late Robert and Recie Hooker Perdue. Mr. Perdue was retired from Burlington Ind. and was a member of Isom Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Leona Mabe Perdue of the home; a daughter, Janie Dodson of the home; a son, Carl Alan Perdue of Lantana, Fla.; two brothers, L.G. Perdue of Live Oak, Fla. , and William Perdue of Lexington, S.C.; a sister, Virginia Brendle of Live Oak, Fla.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Isom Baptist Church , with the Rev. Chester Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. SUMMERFIELD -- Mrs. Jane Young Sharpe, 50, of 1623 Witty Road died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at her home. The funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at New Lebanon Congregational Christian Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Sharpe was born in Forsyth County. She was a member of New Lebanon Congregational Christian Church and was a teacher with Rockingham County Middle School in Wentworth. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Walter Young and Margaret Wagner Young Jenkins and a son, Robert Fletcher Sharpe. Survivors include her husband, Robert ''Bobby'' Sharpe; a son, Benjamin Elisha Sharpe; and a daughter, Hannah Lourinda Sharpe all of the home; brother William Earl Young of Winston-Salem; and sisters Gloria Libes of Winston-Salem and Robin Sims of Oklahoma. Mrs. Adelaide McCuiston Shaw, 73, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, Oct. 2, 2000. She was born to the late John McCuiston and Jacquline Brinkley Feb. 25, 1927, in Wallburg. She married Joe Carroll Shaw on July 8, 1941 in Norfolk, Va. He preceded her in death in 1991. She is survived by two daughters, Lettie S. Fouts and her husband of High Point and Betty S. Carlson and her husband Fred of Kilmarnock, Va.; three granddaughters, Dawn Trotter of Winston-Salem, Tiffany Fisher of Deltaville, Va., and Danielle Fouts of High Point; a grandson, Joe Shawn Carlson of Kilmarnock, Va.; two great-grandsons, Jonathan Derk Trotter and Zachary Andrew Trotter; two foster children, Teresa Henry and Larry Kelly; a sister, Rebecca Taylor of Charlotte; and a brother, Carlton McCuiston of Arizona. The family would life to give special thanks to Dr. Chir apa Sinthusek, the staff of High Point Manor and the staff of The Oaks at Forsyth for all their exceptional care. Mr. Harvey F. Shepherd of 1100 Cleveland Ave. Apt. J. passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Aug. 9, 1924, in Forsyth County. He attended the local public schools and enjoyed fishing. He leaves to cherish his wife, Geraldine Caldwell Shepherd; two stepsons, Victor McKennly Taylor and Ralph Eugene Taylor Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Fay Samuel and Mrs. Marilyn Levon Thomas; a sister, Mrs. Irene Shelf; 14 grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Frances S. and Jerry C. Gilmore Memorial Chapel where Bishop Claude Thomas will officiate. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. SMITH
Arthur Sykes Smith , affectionately called ''Sykes'' by all who knew and loved him, departed this life Oct. 1, 2000 , at the Stokes-Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Danbury. A lifelong resident of Danbury, Sykes was the oldest child of the union of the late Jerry Benton and Mary Mitchell Smith. He was born July 5, 1923. Sykes was primarily educated in the Stokes County public schools. After serving in World War II in New Guinea, he returned home and completed his high -school education at Charles Drew High School in Madison. Sykes was a member of the Clark Memorial Presbyterian Church in Danbury. He was employed for 35 years with the Friddle and Shelton Construction Co. Among his hobbies were hunting, baseball and simply being a friend to everyone he met. No one was a stranger to Sykes. He will be remembered by loved ones and friends alike as ''The Man on the Courthouse Square.'' He had a smile and a wave for everyone who passed his way. He leaves with loving memories four sisters and two brothers, Mildred S. Hairston of Walnut Cove, John D. (Emily) Smith of Sandy Ridge, Bettie Ann Smith of Danbury, Nettie S. (Jarvis) Forrest of Pilot Mountain, Nancy S. (Jerry) Dodd of Walkertown and James Hampton Smith of Winston-Salem. Sykes was preceded in death by a brother, Jesse Monroe Smith. Sykes was the beloved uncle of six nieces, four nephews, two great-nieces and two great-nephews. A host of cousins and friends will also forever carry fond memories of Sykes. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Danbury Community Church , where Lay Pastor Jennie Hemrick will officiate. Burial will follow in Danbury Cemetery. WALNUT COVE -- Mrs. Ila Lawson Tuttle, 87, of Walnut Cove, died Sunday at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Tuttle was born June 26, 1913 in Stokes County to the late Thomas and Delzen Tuttle Lawson. She was a homemaker and a member of Willow Oak Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Tuttle, a daughter-in-law, Frances Tuttle, two brothers, Bill Lawson and R.J. Lawson and a sister, Irene Hill. Survivors include a daughter, Wanda and husband, Billy Joe Dunlap of Walnut Cove; a son, Reggie Tuttle of Germanton; two sisters, Geneva Aycock of Spartanburg and Inez Suleski and husband Russell of Walnut Cove; a brother, Hobart Lawson and wife, Evoline of Germanton; a grandchild, Vanda Kilpatrick; step-grandchildren, Sandy and husband Lee Jackson, Chris and Kolan Smith and Randy Wood and four step-great-grandchildren. READING, Pa. -- Vanessa D. Warren, 45, of 343 Windsor St . , Reading, Pa., passed away Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at the Reading Hospital. She was born in Winston-Salem Feb. 15, 1955, to Carrie Torrance Richardson and Willie James Nelson, both of Winston-Salem. She was employed as a food-service dietician at the Old Community General Hospital and was last employed with the Highlands in Wyomissing, Pa., and the Sterling Hotel in Reading, Pa. Vanessa is survived by her two sons, Tierre D. Warren of Ft. Campbell, Ky., and Benny A. Warren of Reading, Pa; three grandsons, Davevon Lewis, Christopher M. Warren and Jamon A. Warren; a granddaughter, Kiara M. Estright; three sisters, Belinda (Belton) Willis, Priscilla (Timothy) Holly and Tania (Willie) Patterson, all of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Sherwood Nelson of W. Columbia, S.C., Anthony Nelson of Harmony and Roger Nelson of Winston-Salem; three aunts; three uncles; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends; and two spiritual sisters, Ida Williams and Earline Bradley. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, from the Sanctuary on the Grace United Campus, 2920 Greenway Ave. where the Rev. F.O. Bass will officiate. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the the services from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at the sanctuary.
