HODGES
The Rev. Samuel Luther Hodges Sr., 77, of 2401 Greenway Ave. passed away Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at his residence. He was born May 23, 1923, to David Jackson Hodges and Easter Townsend Hodges in Bennettsville. He was a graduate of Winston-Salem State University, Piedmont College and Shaw Divinity School. He was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and New Hope Baptist Church. Rev. Hodges pastored Forbush Baptist Church in Yadkinville from 1962 to 1966, Shiloh Baptist Church in Mount Airy from 1962 to 1966, New Hope Baptist Church in Winston-Salem from 1969 to 1991 and served as Associate Pastor of St. Stephen's Missionary Baptist until his death. Pastor Hodges was affiliated with numerous civic organizations, Rowan Baptist Association, Ministers Conference of Winston-Salem, Shaw University Alumni Association, Greenway Ideal Community Club, president of Neighborhood Watch and Prince Hall Lodge Bivouac #503. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Mrs. Jessie Marie Hodges; sons Samuel L. Hodges Jr. and Win (Evangelist Minnie) Hodges of Winston-Salem; daughter Mrs. Corty Leak of Winston-Salem; sisters Mrs. Lillie Mae (William) Smith of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Mozella Edie of High Point and Geogella (Fred) Malloy of Bennettsville, S.C.; grandchildren Sakeya Hodges, Jamaka Leak, Jamarr Hodges, Brittney Hodges, Mae Floyd, Lynn M. Floyd, Travish Floyd and Demar M. Floyd; godbrother the Rev. Lester (Rosa) Sellers of Greensboro; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at St. Stephen's Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph R. Samuels officiating. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. HUNTER
EAST BEND -- Mr. Thomas Franklin ''Tommy'' Hunter Sr., 86, of 2633 Flinthill Road died Tuesday morning, Oct. 3, 2000. Mr. Hunter was born in Yadkin County May 21, 1914, to John Thomas and Ella Jester Hunter. He was a retired farmer. Surviving are his wife, Eliza Hutchens Hunter of the home; three daughters, Hazel (Jerry) Scott of Ararat, Mary Cranfill and Brenda Fowler both of East Bend; a son, Thomas Franklin (Bettie) Hunter Jr. of East Bend; a sister, Ruth Blakely of East Bend; a brother, Luther ''Pete'' Hunter of East Bend; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at the Stony Knoll United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Ottis Hurst and the Rev. Jody Bullard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend.
LACKEY
BURLINGTON -- Mrs. Peggy Ann Gray Carter Lackey, 63, of 1641 Robinhood Drive died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at her home. She was born in Winston-Salem to Mary Dhu Anderson Carter and Ralph R. Carter. Mrs. Lackey was a homemaker, member of Trinity Moravian Church in Winston-Salem and associate member of First Presbyterian Church in Burlington , where she was a member of the Women of the Church. She was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, former board of directors and member of Alamance County Historical Museum and member of the East Carolina Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. She was preceded in death by her mother. Surviving are her husband, Mr. Mack Lackey of the home; a son, Mr. Gray Lackey of the home; and her father and stepmother, Mr. Ralph R. Carter and Mrs. Addie Carter of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at First Presbyterian Church in Burlington. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at God's Acre in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington and other times at the home. MCCULLOUGH
DURHAM -- Mrs. Mary Katherine Johnston McCollough died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at the Hillcrest Convalescent Center. She was born Aug. 13, 1911, in Marion, Va. , to the late William E. and Georgia Copenhaver Johnston. She graduated from Marion Junior College in 1930 and Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1932. In 1933, she married the Rev. Henry A. McCullough, a Lutheran pastor who served churches in Chattanooga, Tenn., Columbia, S.C., Newberry, S.C. , and Lincolnton. Katherine was very active in parish life, especially in youth ministry and women's organizations. She also enjoyed participating in community groups, such as the Daughters of the American Revolution and garden, music and literary clubs. In 1993, she and her husband moved to Durham from Newberry S.C. Her husband; two brothers; a sister; and two grandchildren preceded her in death. Surviving are her sons, William and wife Jeanette of Raleigh , and David and wife Carroll of Winston-Salem and her daughter, Katherine Trexler of Durham. In addition, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survived her. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Durham. MICHAEL
NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Pearl Cook Michael, 90, of Boone Trail, widow of George Leonard Michael died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Welcome Home Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph E. Owens and the Rev. Carl Elledge officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30. Entombment will be in the Welcome Home Baptist Church Mausoleum. Mrs. Michael was born in Watauga County on Aug. 16, 1910, to Leonard and Ella Van Dyke Cook. She was the last surviving member of Welcome Home Baptist Church. Mrs. Michael is survived by several nieces and nephews. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Carl L. Murray of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at his residence. Carl was born June 15, 1946, to the late Dorothy Murray Salley and the late Foster Jordan. He was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, was educated in the Forsyth County school system and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are a stepfather, Mr. Joseph G. Salley Sr.; four brothers, Joseph G. Salley Jr. (wife Peggy) and Alvin V. Murray of Winston-Salem, Charles D. Salley (wife Parcilla) of Petersburg, Va., and Christopher T. Salley of Vacaville, Calif.; four sisters, Tanya S. Johnson, Charissa D. Salley, Melanie D. Salley and Deidris S. Reynolds, all of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Memorial services will be 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at the File-Goodwin Center at Mount Zion Baptist Church.

NORTH WILKESBORO -- Bryan Rodriguez, 13, of Windy Ridge Road died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at his home. A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at Baptist Home Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Hollar officiating. Inurnment will be at Scenic Memorials Gardens. Bryan was born Dec. 31, 1986, in Wilkes County to Roberto V. and Donna Hall Rodriguez. In 1996, he played in the Babe Ruth Rookie Tournament and in 1997 he played baseball for the Twins. In 1999, he played football for the Mulberry Yellow Jackets and basketball for the Mulberry Mustangs. He is survived by his parents of the home; a sister, Amy D. Jacobo of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two brothers, Daniel L. Rodriguez and Amos M. Rodriguez both of the home; and his grandparents, Daisy Hall and Don and Belma Jennings all of North Wilkesboro and Modesto and Guadalupe Rodriguez of Mexico. HAYS -- Mr. Bobby Wayne Salmon, 62, of Sawyer Road died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Pentecostal Church of the Living God, Highway 16, with the Rev. Roy Wyatt and the Rev. Michael Brown officiating. Burial will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens. Mr. Salmon was born in Lee County July 13, 1938, to Arthur and Geneva McNeil Salmon. He was a member of Pentecostal Church of the Living God. Surviving are his wife, Linda Boswell Salmon of the home; a daughter, Lisa Ann Salmon of Hays; three sons, Wayne Ray Salmon and William Arthur Salmon both of Hays and John Paul Salmon of Sparta; a sister, Betty Venable of Sanford; a brother, Wallace Salmon of Sanford; and five grandchildren. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from noon to 1:30 prior to the service.

Mr. Jean Roosevelt Thomas, 99, of 4512 Thomas Road, East Bend, passed away Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000 , at his residence after a period of illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of East Bend was a faithful member of Benbow Chapel AME Zion Church where he served in many capacities . He was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Williams Thomas. He is survived by three sons, James F. (Lottie) Thomas, Franklin M. (Laura) Thomas, all of East Bend and Willis (Adeline) Thomas of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Benbow Chapel AME Zion Church in East Bend with the Rev. Louis Hunter officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mr. George Alex Witherspoon, 86, of 2101 Gerald St. passed away Oct. 1, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Lancaster, S.C., on Dec. 10, 1913, to the late William Alex Witherspoon and Sarah Gaither Witherspoon. He was a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Laymen League and was a retired plasterer. He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 65 years, Lillie McConnell Witherspoon of the home; two sons, William C. Witherspoon and Stanley V. Witherspoon, both of the home; a foster daughter, Elizabeth Burgess of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Witherspoon of New York, N.Y.; a loving and devoted niece, Annette Wells and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday from Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Church, Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
